Strike: Lawyers should not turn lawbreakers

The recent strike by lawyers has once again brought them in news for wrong reasons. It was shameful act as the law keepers turned themselves into lawbreakers. The lawyers need to be more disciplined and maintain dignity of their designation. What example will they display for their juniors if they themselves exhibit such unruly behaviour? This lawlessness and indiscipline call for strict rules and regulations stating code of conduct. The ones violating the rules should be suspended and fined suitably. To serve the purpose, counselling classes should be conducted to remind them of their duties so that such incidents do not occur in future. Every problem has a solution and they should have adopted a peaceful manner to display their demands. Being public servants, the common man should be their priority.

Vineet Kapoor, Panchkula

Litigants should not be made to suffer

It is not for the first time that the lawyers in the city have gone on strike. The rules for performing the duties are framed by the rule making authorities and the subordinates are simply to implement these rules. As a matter of fact, it becomes obvious that rule/lawmakers themselves play a key role in the simultaneous brutalisation and emasculation of India’s police force. While implementing the rule/laws, there is a greater need to exercise restraint that the police personnel, especially at the lower level need to have a change in their colonial mind set. Though we all have sympathies with the lawyers, who have allegedly been insulted, but not at the cost of the litigants, as in the past it has become a routine affair to observe strike even on a slightest pretext by the lawyers fraternity little knowing that large number of cases are pending in various courts and how much expenditure costs the exchequer for one day’s absence. With this aim in view, even the Apex Court had curtailed the conventional summer vacations .It is proved beyond any iota of truth that on the one hand there is a lengthy and cumbersome procedure of our judicial delivery system and on the other lawyers want to go on strike.

SK Khosla, Chandigarh

Condemnable act

The recent strike by lawyers to get their demands fulfilled was condemnable. They should have opted for some peaceful method. Common man suffered a lot in their strike. The public servants should not forget their duty and their sole duty is to serve the public. The lawyers have to be much more disciplined and responsible towards the duties assigned to them. There should be a certain code of conduct and the ones violating the norms must be suitably fined or punished. Training sessions must be held at regular intervals to remind them about their duties and responsibilities.

Dr Shruti Kapoor, Chandigarh

Ugly situation could have been avoided

It is sad that the fight between the lawyers and the police had taken an ugly turn in the city. It is also shameful that a small incident has taken the form of a wild fire. Had the Advocate General in question shown his smart card as his ID proof to the policeman at the gate before entering the High Court premises, as was the norm, such an ugly situation would not have taken place at all. The public in the form of litigants must not be harassed and fleeced by the lawyers and the police together as was done in the recent strike by the lawyers.

RK Kapoor, Chandigarh

Lawyers should learn to obey rules

The trade unions resort to strike and disrupt normal functioning of the work that causes in numerable difficulties and inconvenience to the general public. No sane person would approve the conduct of the lawyers who brought thousands of the litigants to face the music. This kind of action must be condemned and deplored and the lawyer community should first learn to obey the sanctity of the rules rather than displaying their might over a trivial matter.

Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 17
A new fan of the team India has arrived in town. Everyone knows Sudhir Gautam (the bald man with Sachin’s name and upper body painted in tricolour) and Babu (the man with Dhoni’s name on his back and face painted in tri-colour) but here comes a new entry in this club, 10-year-old Shabad Singh, alias ‘Adarsh’.

The Class V student of a local school was livewire of the terrace block of the PCA Stadium, Mohali, during the ongoing third test match between India and Australia for Border-Gavaskar trophy, here. His presence enthralled the gathering and he has been watching the match from the past three days.

Named as ‘Chotta Bhim’, he was cheering from team India, from the pavilion end. In his efforts, he is leaving no stone unturned, from flurrying the national flag to hooting at peak and from clapping loud to blowing the conch.

“I am in love with the game since 2006 and haven’t missed a single match held here in Mohali. My favorite players are Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, MS Dhoni. And Shikhar Dhawan is a new edition to my star list. I am a die-hard fan of the game and will go anywhere to cheer my team,” said Adarsh.

Even the telecasters of the match could not stop them to conduct a live interview with him during the lunch break. “He is a great enthusiast of the game. In future, if he opts to plays cricket with same zeal and confidence, he could surely become a successful player,” said a spectator, in stands.

Busy in cheering the Indian side, he refused to comment on opting cricket, as his future-career.

When he slapped an Australian fan

The 10-year-old, full of energy, Adrash, reportedly slapped an Australian team supporter after the latter allegedly abused him. The incident left the police to take action as he and his other two pals were shifted to members-block chairs from terrace-block. “An Australian fan abused us and he just slapped him slightly. After that gesture, the police personnel shifted us to stands of members block,” said Sudhir, Sachin’s fan.

Pretty faces

On the third day of the ongoing match, the TV crew set up at the PCA Stadium, Mohali, found some pretty faces for the small-screen spectators. Although the stadium was not fully equipped with the spectators but last night’s dream debut by Shikhar Dhawan, attracted ample number of eves to witness the day. “I just came to watch Shikhar Dhawan but he was dismissed early. He is a new face of cricket in his very debut, so I came to watch him,” said a spectator, Anjana Kapur.

Early dismissal of Sachin, Dhawan

The early dismissal of last day’s hero Shikhar Dhawan and a short innings of Sachin Tendulkar made the local crowd to sit back home. Shikhar Dhawan added only 2 runs in his 187 runs total while Sachin scored 37 runs. “Earlier, Dhawan gifted his wicket and before lunch Sachin got dismissed, so there was no use to going to the stadium and watch the match,” said Aulakh Singh.

Police vehicles spotted with tinted glasses

Cars of Punjab police personnel, with tinted glasses, outside the PCA Stadium, are turning out to be a perfect example of law breakers. Even the CCTV van, deployed outside one of the gates, is among the vehicles with black filming windowpanes. An Alto car (near gate No. 11), Scorpio police-gypsy and a white color Tata Sumo (near gate No. 1) were seen with tinted glasses. “The police personnel coming from other districts are he one who own these cars, with tinted glasses,” said a police personal, seeking anonymity.
