Four get 10-yr jail in dowry death case
Ambala, March 15 The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of them. The persons who are convicted include Raj Kumar (husband), Shana Ram (father-in-law), Prakasho Devi (mother-in-law) and Rori Devi (sister-in-law). According to prosecution, the deceased, Aasha Devi, a resident of Gharonda, was married to Raj Kumar, a resident of Saha village close to Ambala Cantonment, on November 20, 2003. Her husband and other in-laws used to harass the deceased for dowry. On October 7, 2011, Mahender Kumar, father of the deceased, received an information from Saha that her daughter had died. Later, on the complaint of Mahender, a case of dowry death was registered against Raj Kumar and other three members of his family. |

3 drug peddlers arrested
Fatehgarh Sahib, March 15 SSP HS Mann said the campaign initiated against drug peddlers had been intensified in the district. He said the CIA Staff, Mandi Gobindgarh, had arrested one Salim Khan, a resident of Ramgarh in Amloh, and recovered 12 grams of smack from his possession. Similarly, during a naka at the Ambey Majra Bus Stand, the police signalled a car to stop for checking, but the driver tried to flee. After some chase, he was overpowered and during the search of his car, the police recovered 15 kg of poppy husk. Those arrested have been identified as Jagdeep Singh alias Deep, a resident of Police Station Payal in Ludhiana, and Harphool Kumar, a resident of Payal village. — OC |

Woman dies in road mishap
Ambala, March 15 She was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital at Ambala City where doctors declared her brought dead. According to information, Lakhvinder, who was riding pillion on the motorcycle with her son, was on the way to Sarhind. A speedy tanker hit them near Jandli bridge. Lakhvinder was injured seriously, while her son escaped unhurt. The driver of the tanker fled from the spot but was later arrested. A case has been registered. 2 women killed in accident
Panchkula: Two women were killed after they were hit by a speeding car, while they were crossing the road, near the Chandi Mandir Toll Plaza yesterday night. The victims, Phoolwati and Sridevi, residents of Railway Colony, Chandi Mandir, were rushed to

Chandigarh: A motorcyclist died after being hit by a rashly driven truck in the Industrial Area yesterday night. The victim, Deepak, was a resident of Sector 29-B, Chandigarh. The mishap took place near Railway Bridge, Colony No. 4. Deepak, who worked with a private firm,
was immediately rushed to the GMCH-32 where doctors declared him brought dead. The police has registered a case of rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence under Sections 279, 304-A of the IPC. The case is under investigation. |
Doon MLA’s plea to attend Budget session rejected
Panchkula, March 15 The court rejected his plea after the police had filed in its reply that they did not want to take any risk and it was not feasible for them to keep Chaudhary there for so many days. Chaudhary, the main accused in Jyoti murder case, had expressed his desire to join the Budget session by filing an application in the court on March 12. The police in its reply said though the decision lies with the court, it was not feasible for them to either commute daily for the Budget session or to keep him there for a month. Chaudhary, in his application, had stated that being the MLA from the Doon Constituency, Himachal Pradesh, he might be permitted to join the Budget session from March 12 to April 9. |

Mohali, March 15 The non-availability of the spectators to cheer the teams remains a cause of worry for the host and in order to invite people, the association has decided to provide the tickets on per day basis. According to new rates, the tickets for the AC lounge will be available at Rs 1,200 per day, terrace block at Rs 600 per day and chair block at Rs 100 per day (season tickets). The tickets would be available at only two branches including the Central Bank of India, Sector 70, Mohali, and Central Bank of India, Sector 32, Chandigarh. Earlier, the tickets were available in categories the AC lounge-Rs 4,000 (season ticket), enclosure level-II Rs 5,000 (season ticket), pavilion terrace Rs 2,500 (season ticket), VIP block Rs 750 (season ticket), chair block-Rs 250 (season ticket) and student ticket-Rs 150 (season ticket). Earlier, to lure young budding cricket players, the authorities had provided the match tickets to the local cricket academies on special rates. But even that step failed to provide audiences for the match. “The PCA has kept new rates of tickets keeping in mind the audience’s interest. The tickets will be without hospitality,” stated GS Walia, honorary joint secretary PCA. Bhajji’s fans disappointed Harbhajan Singh, who is just five wickets away from completing 100 wickets against Australia, was kept out of the playing squad for the third test. He was expected to play on his home ground. But his absence left the fans disappointed. “We were expecting to see him in action, here at the PCA Stadium. It is his home ground and he needs a good bunch of wickets to make sure his place in future,” said Ravinder Singh. Weekend rush The PCA stadium is expected to receive a good fall ahead of weekend. Saturday and Sundays will allow the players of various junior academies to watch their favorite stars in action. |
