Missing lawyer found dead

Ropar, March 2
The body of local lawyer, who was reported missing since February 17, has been recovered from the canal near Shambhu barrier in Rajpura, here this evening. The deceased Satwinder Singh (27) was a resident of Badi Haveli locality (ward no 1) of town.

The victim's car was traced near canal at Pathreri Jattan village, here on Feb 18. Following which, the police had registered a case of kidnapping against unidentified accused.

The Ropar SSP Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti said, Satwinder got married two months ago in December. On February 14, he along with his wife went to meet his in-laws at Rajpura. On February 17, he left Rajpura to meet one of his friends at Chandigarh. Later, he informed his wife telling her that after meeting his friend he was about to leave for Rajpura.

However, he did not reach Rajpura. Neither his wife nor his parents at Ropar were aware of his whereabouts.

Though police scrutinised his call details and questioned many people including three women during last two weeks, no clue regarding his disappearance could be found.

However, today around 6 pm a body was found in the canal at Kapuri village near Shambhu barrier in Patiala district. When family me bers were taken to the spot they identified it as Satwinder's body, said SSP.

Man gets 18-month jail in bribe case

Chandigarh, March 2
A local court today sentenced a 50-year-old man to 18-month imprisonment in a corruption case dated 2009. The accused, Shanti Dass, had demanded a sum of Rs 1 lakh from a suspended head constable, Mohinder Singh, on the pretext of reinstating him.

Shanti had told Mohinder that he had a direct link with the IG," said a police official.

The court of District and Sessions Judge, SK Aggarwal, has also slapped a fine of Rs 4,000 on Dass.

Before being caught red-handed by the Vigilance sleuths, Dass was reportedly at the office of DSP (east) in Sector 26.

The cellphone details of the accused pointed towards his links with several police officers, said an official. Dass is learnt to be a taxi driver. He is also learnt to have headed the Ambedkar Welfare Council.

On the complaint of Mahinder, the Vigilance Bureau had laid a trap, where Shanti was caught red-handed receiving a bribe of Rs 10,000.

Shanti was learnt to have visited the office of DSP PK Dhawan ahead of the trap. Recording his statement in the court, the DSP claimed that before being arrested, Shanti had come to his office to discuss some issue according to police officers.

extortion case
P’kula DPRO summoned by court

The Panchkula District Public Relations Officer Vinod Kashyap has been summoned by the court, in a criminal case after he was accused of extorting Rs 8,800 from a minor by forcibly taking him to the ATM and withdrawing the same. Kashyap, who is a government servant has been asked to appear on May 1.

It was today when the case had come up for hearing before the judge Amit Verma, the court found it fit to summon Kashyap. A CCTV footage, which is with the Chandigarh Tribune has also been submitted in the court, showing how the victim was being taken forcibly to the ATM.

It was in March 2011, when the victim was sitting with his friend in the cricket ground, Sector 5, Panchkula, and watching a cricket match, being played by other kids. The kids hit the ball and it smashed the windscreen of a car. The driver came out of the car with another person. It was further stated that the kids who had actually hit the ball fled but the victim was caught along with few other kids.

Though the kids said that they were just watching cricket, the driver dragged them to the mini-secretariat Sector 1, Panchkula, where Vinod Kashyap came and started beating one of the kids. Later Kashyap also snatched Rs 500 and two ATM cards.

According to the complaint, Kashyap along with his driver and another person forcibly took the victim to the ATM counter of State Bank of India (SBI) Sector 10, Panchkula. Kashyap asked his driver to withdraw the amount, who withdrew Rs 4300, using that ATM. However, the DPRO said that the amount was not enough and when the victim said that he did not have money, the DPRO started beating him. Fearing threat to life, the victim took DPRO to a house, where he worked, Sector 4, Panchkula. On victim's request, the resident woman paid Rs 4,000 as per the DPRO’s demand.

The victim also stated that on the way, he was threatened to be eliminated and to be implicated in false cases, if he approached the police. The resident who had paid the amount and seen the DPRO thrashing the child approached a social worker. Thereafter, the victim approached the Human Social Justice Panel and An application was moved by the Counsel Manbir Singh Rathi in this concern.

MURDER CASE
Accused sent to judicial custody

Panchkula, March 2
The two accused, identified as Deva and Vikas, alias Bhaand, who were arrested by the Panchkula Police, admitted that in a fit of rage they bruttaly stabbed Ravi to death at the Kisan Mandi, Sector 5, Panchkula.

The two accused were produced in the court today and were sent in five day police remand. However, the main accused Pradeep is still at large. A 28-year-old man, Ravi was killed while his brother Aneesh was seriously injured in a fight over just Rs 10, among seven youths on Thursday night.

Yesterday the relatives of the victim had jammed the road separating Sector 5 and Sector 6 alleging no arrests by the police. It was after Commissioner of Police(CP) Rajbir Deswal and Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashwin Shenvi, pacified the agitators assuring arrests within 24 hours that the road was cleared.

A case under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 5 police station.

Motorcycle's tyre stolen

Chandigarh, March 2
Striking right under the nose of the Chandigarh Police, two thieves disguising as police personnel, stole the rear tyre of a Yamaha motorcycle in Sector 15, in the wee hours this morning. The incident was however recorded in the CCTV camera, installed outside the home, in which the accused were seen unscrewing the wheel with the help of tools at around 2 am.

The complainant, Anil Thakur , who runs a beauty parlor, alleged the involvement of policemen in this act but due to the unclear footage, the faces were difficult to be recognise. “We came to know about this in the morning. It seems like police personnels are striking the theft. We were shocked to see this and we attached the copy of footage along withthe complaint” said Anil Thakur. On the other hand, the police is still going through the CCTV footage and investigating the matter. — TNS

Thefts on the rise in city

Chandigarh, March 2
The police has arrested Narender, a resident of Dhanas, for stealing a bicycle of Ajay Kumar, a resident of Dhanas. A case has been registered. Sidharth Bansal, a resident of Sector 45, reported to the police that someone had stolen his motorcycle from the parking lot of Sector 22 on March 1.

A case has been registered.

Kaushal Kamboj, a resident of Panchkula, alleged that someone had stolen his auto from the Sector 26 Grain Market. A case has been registered.

The police has booked Gurwinder Singh, a resident of Ambala, in an eve-teasing case. Ravi, a resident of Ramdarbar, said Joginder, Ajay, Anil, Ashoki, Paramjit and Suraj fled after damaging his car at the ISBT-43 on March 1. A case has been registered.

Sarupi Devi, a resident of Sector 43, reported to the police that twp youths snatched her gold chain. A case has been registered.

Three held with 4.15-kg charas

Chandigarh, March 2
The police arrested three persons and recovered 4.15 kg of charas from their possession yesterday. The three have been identified as Rom Singh, Sohan Singh and Sandeep Kumar.

Rom Singh and Sohan Singh hail from Kullu while Sandeep Kumar is a resident of Sector 19, Chandigarh. The trio was produced in the court which sent them to judicial custody.

73-yr-old killed

A 73-year old man died after a Maruti car driver pushed him following a scuffle at Sector 26 this evening. The victim, Krishan Lal, was with his grandson Bhupesh Gupta.

He was rushed to GMSH-16, where he was declared brought dead. The car driver fled the scene.

Man booked for rape bid

The police has booked Ram Bhadur (36), a resident of Badheri village, in an attempt to rape case today.

The accused reportedly raped a three-year-old girl on the pretext of offering her food.

The girl's mother, who was looking for her, reached the accused's house and caught him red-handed.
