Deteriorating law and order situation worries residents

Leaders of different political parties paid tributes to Rajesh Kumar Bittu, who was murdered a few days ago in Dera Bassi.

While paying tributes, leaders criticised the state government and the police administration for deteriorating law and order in the state. They said common man in Punjab was not feeling safe because some criminal elements, with a safety cover of state government, were terrorising people.

Congress leader Manpreet Kaur Dolly said the state government and police administration had failed in saving common people from criminal elements. She demanded a proper inquiry in Rajesh Kumar Bittu murder case and said all accused should be exposed before public and punished.

4 months on, UP migrant missing 

Dera Bassi, February 24
A resident of Dera Bassi, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, was missing from past four months. Sources said Wahid Ali (45) belongs to Rodan village, Badau district of Uttar Pradesh.
The police has registered a case in this regard. — OC

Youth festival begins at Punjabi varsity

Fanfare, ecstasy, glamour and splash of colours marked the beginning of the 6th South Asian Universities Youth Festival (SAUFEST) that got underway in the Punjabi University’s Guru Tegh Bahadur hall here today.

Being organised by the university’s Department of Youth Welfare in association with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), this happens to be first-of-its-kind mega event being organised by the Punjabi University on its campus in which more than 250 youths from 40 universities, hailing from six countries would be vying for top honours in the five-day event.

Speakers during the inaugural session advocated the cause of tabulating a ‘cultural policy’ to promote the unique cultural diversities among the SAARC nations with its shine and prowess carving out a special niche among the countries in the world.

Football tournament from February 28

Fatehgarh Sahib, February 24
The District Football Association (DFA), Fatehgarh Sahib, will organise senior state football championship, slated to be held from February 28 to March 3. The decision in this regard was taken in the meeting of the DFA held under the presidentship of senior SAD (B) leader Rajesh Pal Singh Lalli.

Amarjit Singh Kohli, secretary, DFA said the championship would be organised at ITI, Bassi Pathana. He said teams from all the districts of the state would participate in the state championship and state team would be selected to participate in the national championship. He said the DFA would make all arrangements for comfort boarding and lodging of the players.

St Stephen’s log win

Chandigarh, February 24
St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, beat St John’s School, Sector 26, by eight wickets in the first semifinal of the 2nd Sardar Bhagwant Singh Memorial Cricket Tournament today.

Batting first, St John’s School posted a modest total of 176 runs in 30 overs with Pawan (55 runs) and Mehul (37 runs) scoring most of the runs. Pranjay (23 runs) and Gurmannat (24 runs) were the other main scorers for the team.

From the bowling side, Akshay claimed four for 28 while Udit and Vishwas claimed two wickets each.

In reply, the winning side achieved the target in 17.3 overs. Udit scored a brilliant knock of unbeaten 111 runs. Karan Aggarwal (35 runs) and Saksham(33 runs) were the other main scorers. From the bowling side, Tejas claimed one wicket for 18 while Mehul took two for 21 runs.

Golf coaching programme from March 15

Panchkula, February 24
The Panchkula Golf Club will conduct the first long term EGTF Golf Coaching Programme, from March 15 to May 12. The programme is specifically designed for beginners and will be conducted by EGTF certified coach Ajay Gujral.

The golf programme will have a total of 18 coaching days and will be conducted twice a week (every Friday 4 to 5pm and Sunday 10 to 11am), for children, men and women of all ages. The members as well as non-members can enroll themselves after contacting Ajay Gujral (9814356013). Basics, including safety, etiquette, rules of Golf, grip, aim, alignment, stance, posture, hitting, chipping, putting, long irons and short irons, will be taught during the coaching camp.

City team announced for carrom championship

Chandigarh, February 24
The Chandigarh Carrom Assoication has selected teams of both boys and girls to participate in the 42nd Senior National and Inter-State Carrom Championship, to be organised at Akola (Maharashtra), from February 26 to March 3. The championship will be organised under the patronage of All India Carrom Federation and will be hosted by the Vidharbha Carrom Association.

Teams-

Men-Gagandeep Singh, Mohd. Talib, Shaquib Hussain and Raj Kumar, Umeed Ali;Women-Farheen and Tuba; Managers-Dewan Singh Aithani and Surinder Kaur; All India Panel Umpire- Abhinandan.
