57-year-old electrocuted in Dera Bassi

Dera Bassi, February 23
An electricity department employee was killed and another was injured after they were electrocuted while were repairing a fault on line at Chaundheri village on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as 57-year-old Deedar Singh, a resident of Jastna Khurd village.

The other employee who was injured has been identified as Jasbeer Singh. Jasbeer has been admitted to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, and his condition is stated to be stable.

SDO Electricity Department, Lalru, said the incident occurred when the wires touched Deedar due to winds while the employees were repairing the fault. He said both the employees were busy in the repairing of wires on the Jagan tube line near Chaundheri village at 12 noon.

The incident came to limelight when some people working in the nearby fields noticed them around 1 pm.

The body of Deedar had been sent to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for the postmortem examination.

Yadavindra Public School celebrated its 64th Annual Academic day, here. On this occasion, Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur was the chief guest at the function.

The venue was shifted from school premises to the Harpal Tiwana Centre for Performing Arts, due to inclement weather. The function started with Preneet lighting the lamp. Thereafter, the School Principal SV Kumar delivered his speech and school students presented the school annual report.

Starting the probe in the recent brawl that took place on the greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club last Saturday, the three-member committee recorded statements of both the parties allegedly involved in the incident.

The committee chaired by Lt-Gen KS Mann, and comprising of SMS Sandhu and JS Rathi, recorded statements of former international athlete Milkha Singh, former captain of the Golf Club SS Laihal and Congress MLA from Punjab Randeep Singh Nabha.

A source said the committee also recorded statements of caddies who were present at the time of incident.

Confirming he had recorded his statement before the committee, Milkha Singh said: “I still stand on my words that it was entirely Vijay Singh Sandhu’s mistake. We had asked him very calmly to give us a pass, but he started the brawl. I am very disappointed and disheartened that this incident would remain a black spot on the game. I have kept the truth in front of the committee members.”

On February 16, high drama was witnessed at the Gold Club when Milkha Singh along with three others, including Nabha, Laihal and former Punjab Chief Secretary RS Mann, engaged in a scuffle with Lieutenant Colonel Vijay Singh Sandhu (retired). Both the parties had filed police complaints against each other.

Judge snubs accused for chewing gum in courtroom

One of the main accused in the Jyoti murder case, Dharampal, faced the ire of the judge when he was seen chewing a gum during the court proceedings here today. The judge snubbed him saying, “Herogiri bahar chhodke aaya karo (leave your brazenness outside the courtroom).”

During one of the previous hearings, Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary, the main accused in the case, was also snubbed by the judge when he had kept his hand on the judge’s dais.

It was after the video conferencing did not work today due to some technical glitch that all the accused in the case were produced before the court, where their judicial custody was further extended.

The accused, Chaudhary, his nephews Gurmeet and Dharmpal, Paramjeet, driver Tilak Raj and SIM card dealer Ashish, were about to leave when the judge saw Dharampal chewing a gum in a brazen manner.

Meanwhile, Gurmeet has moved an application for the execution of the general power of attorney in his brother’s name. The case would come up for hearing on February 27.

Judge counsels jeweller, wife to reconcile

The divorce case involving Akhil Jain, owner of Nikkamal and Baburam jewellers, who was recently arrested for beating up his wife Pooja Jain, was today heard by the court of District and Session’s Judge during a lok adalat.

Pooja had filed for divorce after the incident. During the hearing, Judge SK Aggarwal asked the couple to consider the future of their children before taking any decision.

The arguments went on between Pooja and Akhil for long, with Pooja accusing her husband for disassociating her from the family and also the property rights. Akhil, on the other hand, said Pooja had been hurting him since past many days while showing his injury marks. “These injuries are self inflicted. I did not do anything,” said Pooja.

The judge, however, counselled the two to stay together for three days. He also suggested Pooja not to call the PCR number and avoid the involvement of the police in matters that could be resolved amicably.

Various other matrimonial disputes were taken up and disposed of during the lok adalat today. Chief Judicial Magistrate Rajnish K Sharma and Session Judge Aggarwal also counselled an NRI woman who filed a case against her husband for "using their wedlock for procuring permanent residency" in Canada.

Another matrimonial dispute, dating back to September 2012, was settled at the CJM court with the couple deciding to live together.

In all, 3,850 cases under different categories were disposed of today. A compensation of Rs 10.03 lakh was awarded in the motor vehicles accident cases.

In the execution petitions, an amount of Rs 32 lakh was disbursed to petitioners. Traffic challans worth Rs 12,41,500 were realised.

During the lok adalat, the special CBI court also disposed of a case, dating back to 2004, wherein six persons were accused of sending people abroad using fake documents in 2004. Acting on 106 complaints and challans presented by the CBI, a case was registered against PC Bhardwaj, the protector of immigrants, and five other agents who helped in procuring visas for applicants. All the accused were acquitted today.

1 acquitted in murder case

The local court today acquitted a murder accused, Inderjit, in a case of murder. Inderjit was accused of murdering Subash in year 2011. Subash’s body was found at Sector 21 in Panchkula.

It was after no circumstantial evidence was found that the court acquitted the accused.

14-yr-old girl commits suicide in Mohali

Mohali, February 23
A 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself with a plastic rope at her residence in Badhmajra Colony.

On the complaint of the victim’s mother, Kushma Devi, the police has booked three persons, including two woman of the same locality. They have been identified as Pancham, Raj Dulari and Kamlesh. The victim’s mother in her complaint said that Pancham used to stalk her daughter.

The police has registered a case under the Sections 306, and 34 of the IPC at the Balongi Police Station.

Families clash at dhaba

Chandigarh, February 23
Members of two families clashed outside Pal dhaba here in Sector 28 on late Saturday late evening, here. The police said that a man and his wife were sitting in their car, outside the eatery, when a BMW car came there. The door of one of the cars hit the other car, which led to the arguments between both the parties which turned into a fight in which one of the car occupants got injured and was taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. No case was registered till the fling of the report.

3 booked for rape

The UT police has booked three persons, including a Mohali-based doctor in a case of rape and subsequent abortion of a minor girl. The police has registered a case against Vicky, his mother (residents of Sector 39) and a Mohali-based doctor. Sources said Vicky had befriended the victim (14) and raped her around five months ago. In connivance with his mother, Vicky took the victim to a Mohali doctor and got the abortion done without her victim’s consent. — TNS

46 take part in golf tourney

Chandigarh, February 23
The Chandigarh Health and Wellness Association (CHAWA) organised the 2nd Beat Pro-Charity Golf Tournament at the Chandigarh Golf Club today.

Due to bad weather, an indoor competition was held. As many as 46 golfers participated in the competition.—TNS
