Ceaseless wonder
Hopping around the world exhibiting at prestigious museums, biennales and galleries Mithu Sen is forever in search of a new vocabulary
Nonika Singh

Predictability is certainly not one of Mithu Sen's virtues. The bohemian artist who loves to provoke, shock and seduce her viewers is as art writer Girish Shahane puts it "quite a contrarian." In other words a bundle of surprises. So, for her show in New York while all through the making of her works she invites strangers to her studio, on the opening day she does a vanishing trick only to connect with them personally at a later level.

And the woman who calls her artwork her children whom she likes to give a home is now through her Free Mithu project willing to barter her works for a letter of love from anybody and everybody. And the idealistic and romantic at heart who uses her hair, blood and has even mastered the technique to make teeth, draws the attention of the world to concerns not quite pretty or romantic.

Constantly engaged with issues of identity the girl who as a child was acutely conscious of her dark complexion she challenges the known notions of beauty and also sexuality. Explicit sexual imagery anyway is her constant tool to invite viewers into her world to bare open a realm of taboo issues like homosexuality. Unwanted, marginalised consciously appear on her art-scape as she engages with the grotesque and lends it a beauty of her own yardstick.

Living life on her terms minus all kinds of baggage she not only pushes the boundaries of art with her ever evolving vocabulary but also questions her own art practice. So not too long ago in a sound work titled Me Too she made a confession about the eternal artistic dilemma and anxiety of repeating one's style. More recently at the India Art Fair she prevailed upon the gallery to give her a whole wall on which she wrote simply artist — unknown, medium — life. If this was her tribute to unsung artists with Free Mithu she not only liberates herself from the forces of market but in a way viewers too from the set perceptions of art.

To educate viewers, she feels is the responsibility of artists. And while Indian museums may not be ready for the kind of works she did for a show in Japan, based on their subculture of porno comics, the Indian viewer certainly is. Ceaseless in her endeavour to surprise them, life for Mithu is like a relay race in which she has to play her part. Of an artist who might wear her "I don't care" attitude up her sleeve but remains one who truly cares, of one who might turn our gaze to ugly concerns often brushed under the carpet but one whose heart is full of love.

And it's this love that reaches out and makes one of the members of the audience after her riveting lecture at the National Art Week organised by the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi want to hug her. That's the power of her work that people embrace without any reservations.

Mithu speak

Much of my work is autobiographical but it could be as much your story as mine.
I follow the Buddhist philosophy of attachment and detachment.
Teasing the viewers is very important for only then you get the right response.
I know I am skilled but I don't care to repeat myself for that can be very limiting.
I believe in my brand of feminism which is certainly not against men.
Beauty is confidence and self love.
Space is very important for me.

True talent
Bhartanatyam has the ability to click with the crowd, believes Savita Sastry, in Chandigarh with her latest solo show Yudh: Three Perspectives, One Truth
Mona

Savita Sastry
all grace: Savita Sastry

Connecting to the young while also retaining the bond the old share with Bharatnatyam is what Savita Sastry is striving for and she has been fairly successful in her endeavour.

In Chandigarh, with her latest solo dance production Yudh: Three Perspectives, One Truth that premiered earlier this month in Mumbai, Savita gets talking.

"I am all for retaining the purity of the dance form while addressing contemporary issues," says Savita, shining every bit in a bright sari with the jewellery in place. A neuroscientist who could finally make dance her forte, Savita is all for using contemporary narrative to engage viewers.

Yudh, as always, comes from her husband AK Srikanth's stable, a story he thought of when he was just a twelve-year old. Story of a child who is kidnapped echoes strongly today and weaves in three perspectives — that of human, Satan and God within. "I always dance on Sri's stories and he writes only for me," she says.

While her dance presents Sri's creation in a totally different language — that of dance, music, choreography, light and sound, costumes — each aspect is minutely taken care of. "I borrow a lot from cinematic language," confesses this danseuse whose first inspiration was Hema Malini on screen. Bharatnatyam started at the age of five, but her parents insisted that dance should only come third — next to academics followed by music (that comes naturally for she is a Tamil). Even today, dance is not just a viable career option, finances being an issue. Savita has managed to break that barrier and in fact with her Sai Sri Arts production is aiming to promote young creative talent, not only by supporting them financially but also by sharing the platform.

Yudh has opened up to a great response in Mumbai and Hyderabad, right after Soul Cages connected with audiences in different parts of the world. And this husband-wife duo is already at their next production One by X, which is a story of a woman caught in two entirely opposite worlds.

Savita carries on with her endeavour to connect with the young, "All I ask for is one hour and I am certain that I will be able to hold your attention for that time," she says. With one of her YouTube videos having garnered 1.5 million hits, she might have made that point already!

(Yudh will be staged on Saturday at the Tagore Theatre from 7 pm onwards)

Couture getting hot!

Models showcase designer collections.
bridal design: Models showcase designer collections.

When it comes to haute couture...two words come to mind--classy and fabulous. A designer wear lends grace and accentuates style. What is more fulfilling then garnering your 'adaah' under one roof with the manifold collections of various designers? Here, at Adaah Couture-8, Chandigarh witnesses the comprehensive collection of a range of designers, offering magnificent Indian wear from lehengas to elegant sarees and the dainty Anarkalis.

Renowned designers of the country, Tarun Tahiliani, JJ Valaya, Rohit Bal, Sabyasachi, Varun bahl, Mandira Wirk, Suneet Varma , Gaurav gupta, Rimple and Harpreet Narula put forth their coveted work that is impressively unique and aesthetically appealing.

"We have an exquisite bridal collection from the top most designers that caters to the fashion conscious populace. The store highlights the latest trends in the fashion circuit and aims at enhancing the glam quotient," says Ankit Gupta, managing director, Adaah Couture.

What all to look forward to? If you are on the lookout for the stunning Anarkalis, Rohit Bal is an appropriate option with the splendid 'gheras'. Sabyasachi, known for his ethereal saree collection, offers a wonderful drape, made with matka silk fabric .You can explore the signature style of the acclaimed designers and make the fancy apparel a part of your wardrobe. Heavy embroidery and embellishments are in demand when it comes to weddings and JJ Valaya's work is exemplary with the intensive embroidery with details. If you want that chic look, opt for Mandira Wirk's perfect cocktail evening kurta set. Also you can team up your attire with ethnic hand painted fine quality clutches, visually delightful handbags and wallets by Fluke Design Company, available in the store.

"If you want the outfit customised, we will make arrangements to suit your likings and thereby connect you directly with the designers," says Saurabh Sharma, general manager.

The couture store has conceived the idea of a special salon area that is a kind of 'private preview section' for a client. It has a platform illuminated with lights to showcase the dress for a would-be-bride so that she can see the final result. "Bridal wears and finest trousseau can be tried and thus the ensembles can be suited accordingly to fulfill their couture desires," adds Sharma.

The magnificent garments are available for Rs.1to 8 lakhs for lehengas, Rs 30,000-80,000 for suits and Rs 75,000 and above for sarees.

Brand new
Brands have always been popular. And when the youngsters take to them in a big way, the sky is the limit…
Tanya Malhotra

A Gucci handbag for ladies while an Armani tee for the gentlemen is a given in today's world, where international brands have become a household name and youngsters have taken a strong liking for them. Even the middle class is in the thick of things!

From clothes to make-up to accessories to footwear, brand awareness amid the youth in Chandigarh has sure hit the roof! "I mostly love brands for their fresh designs. I particularly like polo shirts as they look slick, which lends a sharp yet trendy look," says Gaurav Malik, student, Law Department, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh. "The best of brands always come up with something new, which is really exciting," he adds. Ishita Madaan, former PU student, says, "For me Prada is pride, I feel more confident with my Versace glares and my Chanel handbag. Everything I own has its little tag. I shop locally as well as internationally".

While some worship the name, others like the uniqueness; it's quite refreshing to know that quality remains the main ingredient. "I bought denims from Tommy Hilfiger four years ago and they're still as good as new. I love brands especially for footwear; the quality is worth the price." says Shantanu, a MNC employee.

Fashion is and will always be there; the trends keep changing and that's the beauty of it all. "I can't live a day without my Lancome day cream, I go all the way to New Delhi twice a year to stock up," says Akriti, housewife.

Online operations

"Online shopping is definitely fast, easy and safe. The brands are cheaper than the showrooms. A working woman can wish for nothing more," says Nidhi Rana, career consultant.

Showroom stoppage

"I can literally live in a showroom! Shopping in a mall is like a spa for shopaholics. I am not too fond of online shopping but I do indulge in it, if needs be," says Srishti Singh, Khalsa college student in Chandigarh.

First foray

What about the first impression? Says Suparva Gautam, psychology student from PU, "I'd rather date a person with brains than brands." "Men are instantly attracted to women who present themselves well, brands or no brands," adds Inderpal Singh, MBA student.

Deep focus
Three young photographers Idris Ahmed, Mathew Kurien and Angad B Sodhi, have opened a whole new world through their clicks…
Manpriya Singh

They all picked up the camera at various points of time in their life and haven't put it down since! Meet Idris Ahmed, Mathew Kurien and Angad B Sodhi, the three young photographers, with varied backgrounds and equally varied perspectives on the world in which they roam.

Living the Dream, a group photography exhibition, lives up to its name and brings together travel works from Jerusalem, New Zealand, Amritsar, Rajasthan, Greece, Chandigarh. It's an exciting world of travel photography and the possibilities and places are endless. "I went backpacking to New Zealand for two months. That place is a photographer's dream. I must have taken as many as 10,000 photographs at that place. The landscapes are endless; it is picture perfect," shares Angad B. Sodhi, a former journalist and travel writer, while pointing to the sheep against breathtaking background in sepia mode. It's been four years since quitting the full-time job and making the transition from an amateur to a professional photographer; a blend that, perhaps, brings in the best of both the worlds in his works.

Mathew Kurien chose to put up only his London works, while exhibiting first time in the city. "I thought people here can associate with London and moreover, it's a place that hits you from a design point of view," shares the design manager with Dorling Kindersley. While his works remain heavily influenced by basic graphic design, subjects and inspiration remain impromptu. "You just go to a place and I know this is the picture."

Idris Ahmed quit his job and took the plunge to pursue his passion. His life has been on the move and en route, cutting across times and clicking from Colombo to the Kumbh Mela, from Jerusalem to Leh, is there anything unexplored as yet? "I would love to travel and click Turkey someday. I can relate to the Sufism that exists there. As a travel photographer, it is very important to connect with your subject."

He adds, "I have been to Chandigarh before but this is for the first time that this exhibition is happening." His eleven works either bring in the rush of colours, for instance the series Holi in Braj, or the dynamism of monochromes.

Coming up is a workshop on travel photography and currently the mugs with the works of the artists are up for those who want a bit of different worlds in their life!

first-day-first show
An emotional journey

Kai Po Che!

Raj Kumar Yadav in Kai Po Che
Raj Kumar Yadav in Kai Po Che

Kai Po Che is based on Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life and is directed by Abhishek Kapoor. While Sushant Singh Rajput, Raj Kumar Yadav and Amit Sadh star as the three main protagonists, Amrita Puri plays the female lead. Set in the early 2000, best friends, Ishaan, Omi and Govind, start a business that could be their ticket to fame and riches. In a country where cricket is a religion, they hit upon a plan to start a training academy that could produce India's next sport superstars. What follows is the greatest adventure of their lives, as they attempt to navigate the big hurdles in the path of fulfilling their dreams.

Good show

Well, I really liked the movie but somehow, I feel that the protagonist should not have died. It was an emotional journey though friendship and all that come along with it. I really loved the movie.

Virender Singh, student at NIIT

Emotional quotient

The movie was very emotional and the storyline just sets the mood for the same. In fact, it threw light on the religion and politics that stems from its sheer existence. This film will go a long way in changing the perception of people.

Jatin, student at CCET

Zila Ghaziabad

Sanjay Dutt in Zila Ghaziabad
Sanjay Dutt in Zila Ghaziabad

Zila Ghaziabad is a Bollywood political action thriller directed by Anand Kumar. It is presented by Bharat Shah and Mohammed Fasih. The film features Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Vivek Oberoi, Minissha Lamba and Ravi Kishan in lead roles among others.

Stale tale

The storyline is very predictable. Also, the film has poor action sequences, acting and screenplay. In one of the action sequences, Sanjay Dutt hangs in the air and shoots the goons, while goons stay still in the air. It was very disappointing and unreal.

Mehak, student, Panjab University

Dull fare

Sanjay Dutt as a cop is dull and so are his one-liners. There was much buzz about him being a brutal cop, but his characterization is not crafted to support that. In the beginning, Vivek Oberoi looked promising but he ended up giving unreal smile for his expressions. However, Arshad Warsi as a short-tempered goon is a delight.

Status—single

It is said that you are single until you are married. So, here is a list of single hotties...

Anushka Sharma: The whole world is still guessing about her relationship with Ranveer Singh. She is tight-lipped about her budding romance with Arjun Kapoor as well. We have a feeling she will continue declaring her single status for a long time to come.

Priyanka Chopra: She will never come clean about her romance with a senior superstar and her family is even recommending boys for her! So, the 30-year-old hottie is single and busy with her career. Her mother will find a good husband for her.

Katrina Kaif: She never spoke publicly about her romance with Salman Khan and has been tightlipped about Ranbir Kapoor as well. She has said herself that she will only talk about her relationship when it reaches the marriage stage. So Katrina is single.

Kangna Ranuat: She has been fairly vocal about her relationships. The Aditya Panscholi fiasco is common knowledge, as is the short-lived romance with Adhyayan Suman. She is busy with film commitments, so she is not seeking to date or get married at the moment.

Shahid Kapoor: Out of this entire list, he is perfectly single and ready to mingle. He is busy shooting at the moment and has not even been linked seriously to anyone post his break up with Priyanka Chopra as Nargis was just a rumoured fling. We wish him luck.

Madhur gifts Gutka to Karan

It is already out that Karan Johar has been signed by Dharma Productions for one of its upcoming ventures that is to be directed by Punit Malhotra who had earlier directed I Hate Luv Storys.

But there was a small impediment; the film's title Gutka was registered under the name of Madhur Bhandarkar. It was only after producer Karan Johar spoke to Bhandarkar regarding the same, the former readily transferred the title on his name. With the glitch out, Johar is all set to start pre-production of the film that would be a two-hero project.

So, Akshay will star in the film with Emraan Hashmi. This will be the first time that Akshay Kumar would pair up with Emraan Hashmi. Interestingly, Emraan is also to play the main lead in the joint venture of Johar and Ekta Kapoor.

(L-R) Madhur Bhandarkar & Karan JoharOf late, Johar in his zest to maximize the activities of his banner is all set to produce nine big films in the ensuing couple of years that include Hasee To Phasee starring Siddharth Malhotra and Parineeti, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein with Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, Dostana 2 with Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and his joint venture with Ekta Kapoor starring Emraan Hashmi and Kareena Kapoor which will be directed by him.

Punjabi MC goes to Bollywood

One of the world's biggest music producers, the man behind worldwide smash hit Mundian Te Bach Ke… Panjabi MC scores his first original track especially for Bollywood. Haaay! has been composed and sung by him, and also features voice of Manak-E.

Set on the Panjab University campus, the video of the song replicates the popular gehri route feel that's unique to Chandigarh. The video drips of signature local flavour with guys doing insane stunts on everything, including bikes, cycles, cycle rickshaws and even tractors. With local pehelwans, b-boying dancers and more making their way into the visuals.

Punjabi MCPanjabi MC quotes "It was a fantastic experience to score for Yash Raj Films, one of Bollywood's biggest studios. The song Haaay! came to me with a very clear brief. Given that the story is set in Chandigarh, scoring Punjabi music is like second nature to me. Also, somewhere deep down, every boy loves his gaddi, and that's exactly what this song is all about, loving your gaddi and your kudi."

The Mere Dad Ki Maruti music album features some of the biggest names in Punjabi music. Dig this… Mika, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Diljit Dosanjh, Panjabi MC besides others. Get ready for an outrageous comedy set against the backdrop of a loud Punjabi wedding.

Sonali loves kids

Sonali Bendre, who has become a staple on television these days as she's been judging kids on various reality shows, is now ready to judge once again. She will be seen in India's Best Dramebaaz, judging the acting skills of kids. She tells us what keeps her going.

You seem to have become an expert at judging shows for kids. Is it a satisfying feeling?

Yes, it is. The kind of talent we have seen so far is overwhelming…they're such cute kids and talk so much, especially when they speak about their parents; their innocence is adorable and will appeal to absolutely everybody.

Sonali BendreWhy did you choose this show?

The concept is unique and Zee has always been a frontrunner as far as reality shows are concerned. It's my first time on Zee TV and the show presents a win-win situation for me. I just love kids. I'm glad that India's Best Dramebaaz provides an atmosphere that puts children at ease, allows them to come into their own and be themselves.

What have you not liked on such shows?

Kids never feel the pinch of failure or rejection, but it's their parents who make them feel the same. That isn't fair.

Would you let your son participate in such a show?

Maybe if he was inclined towards acting.

How are you finding the co-judges Anurag Basu and Vivek Oberoi?

Both are fun-loving and interesting. We are all getting along really well.

no kidding: Sonali Bendre
