60-year-old found dead in Kalka
Kalka, February 14 Sources said the body was recovered from a drainage after some passersby noticed it floating on water. A police team headed by Kalka Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Krishan Kumar Hooda rushed to the spot and sent the body to the Kalka Central Health Centre (CHC) for postmortem. The deceased has been identified as Subhash Gautam of Jharmajri village in Himachal Pradesh. Sanjiv Gautam, the son of the deceased, said his father had gone to attend some marriage function in Shahpur village on February 6 and was missing since. A report has been lodged at Madhanwala police post in this regard. Investigations are on, the police said. |
Two get seven-year jail
Chandigarh, February 14 The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on Govind and Vikram, alias Bunty. Govind has also been convicted in a case under various Sections of the Arms Act and sentenced to a two-year imprisonment in the case. The incident was reported in July, 2010, at Sector 20 when Govind and Vikram opened fire at a team of the Haryana Police which was chasing them. The incident had occurred in broad daylight when a police team from Ambala was trailing three accused who were on the run after killing an undertrial in March that year. Beat constables of the Chandigarh Police along with the Haryana Police had managed to apprehend one of the accused, Govind, after an exchange of fire for half an hour while the other two escaped in a Verna car. No one was injured even as over a dozen rounds were fired into the air. The UT Police had booked them in a case of attempt to murder and had arrested Vikram later on. Rakesh could not be arrested. The three were booked by the Ambala police for murdering a gangster, Rakesh, alias Bobby, in the district courts complex in Ambala on March 3, 2010. Bobby, an undertrial in a murder case and involved in a gang war, was shot dead as he was being taken for hearing to the Ambala court. The Haryana Police had booked Govind, Vikram, alias Bunty, and Rakesh for the murder. The three who have been on the run since then were also involved in the double murder of Bobby's sister Ritu and her friend Ramesh in September 2009. On July 3, 2010, the Special Investigating Team of the Ambala police received a tip-off that the three were to come to meet someone at the Sector 32 hospital. A team comprising 12 Haryana police personnel was dispatched to Chandigarh to arrest the dreaded accused. The three accused had alighted from their Verna car at the Sector 32 hospital when one of the accused, Rakesh, saw the trailing policemen and fired into the air to escape. Seeing them fire, the police also retaliated. While Vikram and Rakesh succeeded to get into their car, Govind started running. With the police personnel chasing him, he fired another seven to eight rounds at the police. The cross-firing continued for some time as Govind ran towards the Sector 20/30 light point. Two Chandigarh police constables, who were on a patrolling duty, apprehended Govind near a park in Sector 20. A country-made pistol and six live cartridges were recovered from Govind. |

11 imprisoned for drunk driving
Chandigarh, February 14 The 11 offenders, who had come to the court to get their challans cleared and get their impounded vehicles released, were made to stand in the court for the entire day as punishment. The traffic police had challaned these offenders and impounded their vehicles after the the alcohol content in their blood was found much above the prescribed limit of 30 mg/100ml. A fine between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000 was also imposed on them. The offenders, convicted under Sections of the Motor Vehicle Act, were confined to the courtroom for more than eight hours. They have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Sector 20, Nirmaljeet Singh, a resident of Mundi Khrarar, Gurcharan Singh, an Ambala resident, Desraj Singh, a city resident, Pyara Singh, a resident of Sector 38, Purshottam Khanna, a resident of Sector 39, Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Sector 38, Jatinder Katial, a resident of Khuda Lahora, Pankaj Kumar, a resident of Sector 23, Harkamal Singh, a resident of Zirakpur, and Santosh Sharma, a resident of Landran. They were challaned in the jurisdiction of the Sector 17 police station. The prescribed norm under the Motor Vehicle Act is 30 mg per 100 ml. The alcohol content in the blood of Gurpreet Singh was 178 mg against the prescribed limit of 30 mg. Alcohol content in the blood of Rakesh Kumar was 230 mg, Jatinder Katial's alcohol content was 240 mg while Santosh Sharma's was found to be 284 mg. What the law says?
As per Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act, anybody found driving or attempting to drive a vehicle above the permissible limit of alcohol in the blood (30mg/100 ml) faces imprisonment up to six months or a fine of
Rs 2,000 or both. |

Constable assaulted
Chandigarh, February 14 The police has booked the youths, identified as Tejbir SIngh, the son of a Delhi-based judge, and Abhishek Gill, the son of a UT police head constable. The case has been registered at the Sector 19 police station. The incident took place when constable Anuj was on duty at a park in Sector 20 in the afternoon. Constable Anuj noticed the youths standing in the park in front of the school. When the constable asked the youths the reason for standing outside the school, they allegedly thrashed him and he sustained minor injuries. The police arrested Tejinder Singh while Abhishek fled. A case has been registered. |

Two bodies found on railway track in Ind Area
Chandigarh, February 14 Kumar said his body was hit by a train while he was crossing the track. The victim’s identity was ascertained with the help of a card recovered from his body. He said investigations were on in this regard. Both the bodies were noticed by some passersby who informed the police, the RPF said. — TNS |

Kabaddi MEET from Feb 26
Chandigarh, February 14 The national level Circle Kabaddi meet will witness teams from Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharastra, Vidharba, Pondicherry, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chandigarh vieing for the title. As many as 500 athletes are expected to participate in the championship. It will be a knock-out tournament. It was also revealed that the Kabaddi World Cup would be held in October, this year and the city would hold two important matches of the championship. DAV-A emerge victorious in handball tourney
Chandigarh, February 14 Manavpreet Singh Bawa scored 8 goals while Sunil Kumar and Sachin scored 7 goals each, for the winning team, along with Narinder (5 goals) and Manoj (4 goals), who were the other main scorers. For the losing side Aman (8 goals), Abhimanyu (6 goals) and Sanjay Khampa (6 goals) could help only in reducing the margin. In the match for the third place, the Coaching Centre, Sector 19 beat Coaching Centre, Sector 42 by 25-24 . In the women's category, the team of Coaching Centre DAV, Sector 8 beat Coaching Centre, Sector 23 by 18 -17 to win the title .
