History revisited
Director Harry Baweja has taken a leaf out of Sikh history and come up with a 3-D stereoscopic war film Char Sahibzade
Amarjot Kaur

Sawa lakh naal ik ladawa, tabi Gobind Singh naam kahawa...
The profound history of Sikhs has witnessed a million shades; it bled red during the sacrifices made by the Gurus to preserve the sanctity of its identity and today, its million more shades came splashing on the curtain raiser trailer of Harry Baweja-directed, Char Sahibzade, at the Confederation of Indian Industry, Sector 32, on Saturday.

“It has taken over three long years of research before I came up with a photo-realistic animation film on the subject that encompasses a wide historical and religious backdrop,” says Baweja while adding, “The most important part of the film is undeniably the story of four sons of Guru Gobind Singh, who sacrificed their lives for the sake of religion. However, I didn’t want any actor to essay the role of the Sahibzades. So, we used animation instead.”

While waxing eloquent about the techniques used during the making of the film, Baweja shares, “I would shuttle between Amritsar and Mumbai to visit the SGPC members, who sought to reason each fact in accordance with the religious records of the same. We have paid attention to the detailing of each frame and as there are 24 frames in one second, we have cut every frame to perfection.”

The movie is due for release next winter and has been produced by Pammi Bajwa. Also, Prasad Ajgaonkaz, while talking about the technology involved in the film says, “This is a 3-D stereoscopic war film and is perhaps the first-of-its-kind to be made in the world. We have made an attempt to cultivate photo-realistic film so that people don’t end up thinking that this is a cartoon film. We are trying to make it look as real as possible.”

The trailer of the film does look promising and features the story of four sons of Guru Gobind Singh, including Ajit Singh, Jhujar Singh, Fateh Singh and Zorawar Singh and how they fought the battle against the Mughals on December 21 and 26, 1705. Also, the dramatic expertise with which the tale of four Sahibzades was presented during the trailer was truly distinguishable.

Dance with a message
Kathak dancer Divya Dikshit is all for the importance of a guru in life…
Mona

Divya Dikshit

Following Osho and learning Kathak rather happened to Divya Dikshit. It was her grandmother who introduced her to Osho and Divya is fortunate to have actually heard and seen him. Kathak came to her as a hobby class and stayed on.

And on Sunday evening, Divya, at the Osho Film Festival being held at Bal Bhawan-23, is all set to bring both of them together. Guru Purnima is a concept that probably the young generation is oblivious to, she rues. The closest they come to is Teacher’s Day. “A teacher might be the closest word to Guru in English, but the latter is way more than the former,” says Divya.

She has especially choreographed a show on Guru, which will be followed by a pure dance piece and conclude with an episode from Buddha’s life.

Kathak is close to Divya’s heart for it lets her explore her inner self while still remaining within the tradition “I also feel that this is one of the classical dance forms that’s closest to ordinary life. And, its sheer energy is magical.” Divya, a double postgraduate, dabbled in the corporate world before she actually found her calling. “I owe this to my Guru and extremely supportive family,” she adds.

A lecturer, Divya is on a sabbatical for a year and fully devoting herself to dance, which has won her much appreciation. Having spent 15 years under her Guru Yogini Gandhi, her learning continues. “Being a defence personnel’s wife, I am always on the move; my performances make me do that even more.”

Divya follows dance for the sheer passion; while materialistic pursuits take a backseat. Although she loves to teach, a swarming school full of students is not what she dreams of.

“To follow one’s own individual path while making meditation part of it is how I interpret Osho and it’s been hugely fulfilling,” she says.

Osho Film Festival will have screening of his movies, including a short biography to begin with, starting at 4:30 pm.

Classy notes
Pt Jasraj is all set to regale the audiences with his deep, soulful voice

Maestro Magic: Pt. Jasraj

Noted classical singer Pt. Jasraj will perform in Chandigarh on February 12 at the Tagore Theatre, Sector-18, as part of the Basant Festival celebrated by Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi. Pandit Jasraj’s achievements can hardly be ove-emphasised. He has carved out his monumental global following, without depriving his domestic admirers. He has single-handedly paved the way for Indian vocal classical music to resonate across the world.

Born in a family of outstanding musicians of over four generations, Pandit Jasraj is blessed with a soulful and sonorous voice, which traverses masterfully over all four-and-a-half octaves. His vocals are characterised by a harmonious blend of the classic and opulent elements projecting traditional music as an intense spiritual expression, at once chaste and yet densely coloured. This gives his music a unique and sublime emotional quality, reaching out to the very soul of the listener.

In this festival, celebrated every year on the fifth day of the month of Magha in Vikrami Calendar, he will be seen celebrating one of the most popular festivals with his unique recital.

Kamal Tiwari, chairman of the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, says the event will celebrate the importance of festivals in our Indian music tradition. In Indian classical music tradition, Basant is one of the most important raga in the old raga-ragani system. In the present day system, Basant is known as Raga of Purvi Thata. The compositions in this raga appear in Holy Shri Guru Granth Sahib. Even contemporary artists of miniature paintings and other visual forms are creating raga ragani works in their chosen art forms.

“Yellow being colour of Basant, we will appreciate if listeners could come wearing something in yellow,” he adds. Entry by invitation only after 6.30 pm on February 12. — TNS

Miniature magic

Sandeep Kaur Walia Photo: Manoj Mahajan

Miniatures by Sandeep Kaur Walia and graphics by Kaumudi Prajapati adorn Punjab Kala Bhavan's walls in sector 16 Chandigarh. An HR executive with a software company, Sandeep's love for colours comes from her father and grandfather. Miniature painting caught her attention during her college days. The present exhibition has a variety of subjects from Hindu gods, goddesses to Sikh gurus and rural life. Attention to detail matters here so when you look at the women figures, be their eyes or jewellery, you will find distinct beauty in each of them!

Episodes from history come alive in some of her frames that show Guru Nanak Dev with Bala and Mardana, undergoing training as a young disciple and when he preached the pandits. The borders are kept in tandem with the theme. The ones depicting rural scenes have phulkari on them. Some of the frames have rural and urban juxtaposed, like in Basant, where women are wearing traditional attires, but a young boy is in a t-shirt. Other paintings like Pushtani Haveli, Nanak Mel, Tanga Lahori captures varied experiences that Sandeep has gone through in life. As for her, "I am happy polishing my art," says the girl.

Woman power

Kaumudi Prajapati's 20 graphics celebrate womanhood and her impressions of her home state Goa. Mainly dry points, graphics with non- acidic techniques, some etchings, her works celebrate human figures and natural symbols like islands, clouds, trees, flowers, waves and more. Women empowerment is the theme close to Kaumudi's heart. "Being a woman I feel comfortable working on it," she says. Relationships between humans, with nature and different groups also figure in her work. "Being a daughter, wife, professional, we are constantly addressing relationships which I find intriguing," she says!

Ancient wisdom, modern twist
If you want to know how Madonna looks the way she does, here is a clue— Ashtang Vinyasa,
a form of yoga that offers complete rejuvenation
Mona

Yoga is our ancient wisdom, which has been valued and popularised in the West. Well, now Tricity residents have access to Ashtang Vinyasa, a form of yoga that keeps Madonna fit, in a hip and happening way!

Synchronising breath with progressive series of postures, this form of yoga is said to offer physical, psychological, metals and spiritual benefits. Kavaljeet Kaur, who has been teaching yoga for last six years, feels sad that our ancient wisdom that has celebs in the West going crazy about it, has still not cut any ice with the young. So she and Dilshet Sukhija, director Hotel Icon have launched YogCafe in style.

An hourly class of yoga in the morning followed by sattvic breakfast and added benefit of spa therapy, this programme is aimed at holistic growth. The programme is open for in-house guests as well as walk-ins.

Says Dilsher, “Most of the clientele are from the corporate sector, people leading a competitive lifestyle full on stress. It’s our effort to get back to the roots.”

Together this duo with chefs have prepared a special sattvik menu that has apple cinnamon halva, yogi porridge, vegetable mint parantha, spinach roti, aloe vera, amla juice, date milk, oatmeal pancakes and fruit salad with apple syrup.

“When one goes to places like Rishikesh, with Ganga flowing on one side, one is totally relaxed. We can achieve this too provided we follow the four pillars of yoga,” says Kavaljeet. Yoga stresses on right achara, vichara, ahara and vihara. Achara is the discipline with self, vichara his behaviour with the outside world. Ahara is the food and vihara recreation. “Now the city folks need not run to Dharamshala or Rishikesh each time they want to purify ones body and mind,” offers this spirited yoga follower.

“As a boutique hotel, we are committed to provide the finest and novel experiences to city folks, Yogcafe seems to be just what is ready to take off,” says Dilsher.

You can walk in a yoga class for Rs 300 or shell out Rs 3,000 monthly for yoga. At Rs 4,500 you get access to classes, two sattvic breakfast meals and two spa treatments. The spa treatments are also on offer to in-house guests who get the treatment right in the room that gets converted to a spa parlour on asking!

Go the distance
Running is an experience. An

Tom Hanks didn't have a reason, one fine day he decided to run, so he ran and ran in the Hollywood blockbuster Forrest Gump. Rahul Verghese probably shares the similar uninspiring (as he calls) reason to run. "It didn't start as a passion; no medical need. I bought a treadmill to beat the dark winter nights of Chicago. Six months later I realised I could run five kilometres, which is not a big deal today. It felt good; a great accomplishment. So, I decided to run in the Chicago Marathon. I bought a book 100 days to your marathon and followed it like a bible," says Rahul, who for a minute would 'run short' of words to describe what he felt like when he crossed the finish line. "I felt I could do anything now. Marathon is now part of my DNA," adds the man who has forty-five marathons to his credit now.

d when we talk of a marathon, the experience gets all the more exciting…
Jasmine Singh

in the Race:  Dr Jaspreet Batth;

I want to run…with wind in my hair and sand at my feet, the animal song by Savage Garden plays softly and then picks up pace in the relaxed quarters of the mind. Steps gain momentum like a soldier who is all prepared; what to do, where to charge, he knows it all. Something just tells the lungs they better be doing a good job and the message is unanimously spread to the entire body. The marathon runner is all set for the experience. The marathon runner is about to enter into a new world, a space, a different life…and we are standing right at the finish line to ask them how it feels. Run a mile along with the marathon runners of the region and discover why they feel that if you want to run, run a mile, but if you want to experience a different life, run a marathon!

And I began running….

It is not the competition, it is camaraderie; it is the spirit and it is what they take from it is what defines marathon for some.

Gagandeep Singh, general manager, Park Plaza-17 again didn't have a rhyme or reason to start running a marathon. He was twenty-two when he started. "I had no idea how to spend my extra time when I was in London. I am early riser, so I started running in the snowy mornings and one day I saw myself crossing the finish line for the London marathon," excitement in his voice says it was a big deal for him. "I have run two half marathons in Gurgaon, London marathon and aiming at a full marathon this year."

Gagandeep Singh Photo: Manoj Mahajan

Keep at it

Running is now like breathing for the 'serious' marathon runners. But you don't decide to run a mile one fine morning. Gagandeep shares his experience. "To run a marathon you have to start preparing at least forty-five days in advance. I divide my days accordingly. I do at least four days of ten kilometres a week, one day of twenty kilometres and then two days of complete rest with no running. I do yoga and stretching exercises, but no aggression," explains Gagandeep, who follows a '10 is to 1' formula while running marathon. "I run for ten kilometres and then stop for a minute, which prepares me for the run again."

It has everything

People have made best friends on marathons as Rahul puts it. Some have discovered themselves in a new perspective.

"It is like brushing my teeth; it energises my day, keeps me in a positive frame of mind and I get to meet similar people with that frame of mind," says Rahul. They come for a different reason and stay together for a different reason.

Run along: Rahul Verghese Photo: Rajesh Sacchar

You can run

Yashovardhan Saboo, Chandigarh based industrialist has a different reason to run. It is definately not for medals or to break records. “I run because I enjoy doing it. I was in Switzerland when I first ran almost 17 kms in chilling conditions. I realised it is not the body but the mind that tells us to either go ahead or stop,” he says. The preparation for every marathon is not very different. Adds Yashovardhan Saboo, “of course one needs to be reasonably fit, and stay away from binging.”

For a reason

You are bound to get inspired by this. Dr Jaspreet Batth, a dental doctor from Panchkula, gets the best out of him through running. He also owes a great deal to his son Karanvir. "I wasn't comfortable with the extra weight that I carried. I started to run and within weeks I could see the difference. I did the marathon despite the weight and managed to cope up well,"

Dr Jaspreet has eight marathons to his credit and he looks forward to many more. "One gets bogged down, first few kilometres are taxing and then you gain momentum. Closer to the finish line you see your family cheer for you and you want to put in that one more effort to cross the finish line," he says enthusiastically.

pet passion
Regimental Roger
Poonam Bindra

"Roger is my Independence Day gift (being born on August 15)," exclaims the young lover of canines, Abhinav Jain, as his friend and mate the Labrador in his shining black coat comes running to meet his master but stops in his tracks after hearing the command "Stop!" He turns his head to an angle in a quizzing manner.

"He is very observant besides being highly obedient and affectionate," says Abhinav. They have two other pets in the house-a German Shepherd and a Pug but for him Roger is his special chum.

LOVE ME LOVE MY ROGER

Abhinav cannot stop telling us about his companion's attributes-"Roger is friendly yet very autocratic and likes to take his time to be familiar with any stranger. I feel that being disciplined is also a very strong quality which I really feel proud of."

Very neat and tidy in his ways, Roger has been no problem after he was suitably trained as a puppy. Enjoying his daily one- and-a-half-kilometer run, Roger loves outdoor.
He also knows who his master is for he will obey his command first and then look at others.

Not a fussy eater and a vegetarian, Roger will eat anything offered to him and of course, he is very fond of sweets. Though quite compatible with the other two in the house, Roger does like to maintain his distance and has his own private corner.

YOUR'S FATHFULLY

"How he welcomes me when I come home is a priceless experience and such a booster for my ego," Roger's master quips. He responds to orders like "Get the Newspaper, roll, salute, hand shake' etc. He can even judge Abhinav's mood and reacts accordingly, either snuggles next to him or drags him out to play. "But once a no, means a no! He has got the discipline of an Army dog," exults the proud owner.

it’s rocking
Such a pleasure!

Tube and Berger, aka Arndt Roerig and Marko Vidovic, began their career in music with a punk band at the age of sixteen. However, they progressed to producing organic electronic music after an introduction to house and techno during the late 90s.

Since a mammoth breakthrough in 2004, the duo's independent label Kittball Records with DJ Juliet Sikora has found a consistent global appeal. They have already dominated DJ booths across the world in the renowned clubs, including Frankfurt's Cocoon and Manchester's Sankeys. They launched their first studio album Introlution in 2012, which features collaborations with Chicago House legend Robert Owens and trumpeter extraordinaire Thalstroem. Their new track, Imprint of Pleasure, was released on January 14 and it is topping the charts already. We advise you to lend your ears to it just like the music buffs in Chandigarh have. Here's what they have to say about the track.

Beats and loops

The first time I heard Imprint of Pleasure was on beatport.com and no wonder it is topping the charts. It has a fresh appeal to it. Needless to say, it is my recent favourite. I love it for the beats and the loops.

Kanika Sehgal, student, New Public School

Appeals to young

When it comes to the new generation, electric music is the way to go! Though most of those who cross their 20s don't really fancy this kind of music but it has a lot of energy to it. Personally, I think that this song has a lot of drama to it, especially how the music rolls through the track. It's very energetic.

Kavisha Mahajan, student, Vivek High School

Original effect

I have listened to a lot of electro house music, but this one seems to have a different appeal. Fortunately, it's nothing like the regular dose of Akcent and Armin van Buuren, though I like listening to them, but this one has a very authentic touch to it. Also, I love the beats and it's a very good way to start the day.

Nipun Nagpal, student, Scholar Fields School

star track
Neha has no regrets

Bollywood actress Neha Dhupia, whose career has been a mixed bag so far, admits she has made mistakes in her career but says she doesn't regret any of them. The former Miss India has been part of popular films like Kyaa Kool Hai Hum, Shootout at Lokhandwala and Singh Is Kinng as well as duds like Sheesha and Paying Guest.

"I have made mistakes, but they are not regrets, and I don't want to talk about my mistakes," Neha said in an interview.

"There is no such thing as wrong films. A mistake could be not waking up in the morning and going to the gym, or if you are rude to someone or someone misunderstands you. I am not god, so I am not perfect. But there are no regrets," she added.

The 32-year-old admits she has turned down many offers that she thought were not suited for her.

"I got many opportunities, but I didn't want to be a part of them. Sometimes you can't relate to something or you feel you are too young or old to do something. "I have refused a lot of work. It is not like I reject work, but I don't agree with some things at times. I just feel that roles should add value to me also. If it's a great role and even if there is one scene, I will do it," she said.

Neha entered the film world after a brush with modelling. She says models are not very good actors, and there are better actors than her in the industry. However, she doesn't believe in competing with anyone.

"There are better actors than us (models) in the industry. Everyone has a (different) magic and I feel that you can only last those many years and get those many more films. Maybe my magic doesn't come across that much, but everyone has something. There is something special about me, maybe not as much as someone else," she said.

The actress said she loves being part of the film industry, and that having a star parent would have made it easier for her.

"It is easier when you have a parent in the industry... you have someone who is selflessly guiding you. If I had a godfather, things would have been different, but even if it is not there, it is okay. I love being in the industry," she said.

Neha also added that she doesn't agree with stereotypical assumptions about the industry being tough on girls.

"People say the industry is a certain way and it is tough for girls, but I have never encountered anything like that...My morals are very high," she said.

Straight talk

Candid confession: Parineeti Chopra

Parineeti Chopra is a straight-shooter and loves to talk. The pretty and young actress is excited about her movies, link-ups and much more…

Romantic link-up

Mahesh Sharma is my mentor. I am here because of him. I am not dating him. We are just friends. I understand that the media needs to gossip but at least they can clarify with me. I am friends with so many guys and co-stars like Sushant Singh Rajput, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor and others.

Weight issues

I am a naturally healthy girl and I cannot be skinny, no matter how hard I try. I love being curvy. It also sets me apart and is a healthy image to promote to my fans. I try to wear clothes that suit my body type but I also have to mould myself according to my film roles. And I am a Punjabi so I love to eat too.

Films & more films

I got many offers after Ishaqzaade and they wanted me to play pretty much the same characters. I don't want to repeat myself. I have Maneesh Sharma's film, Shaad Ali's film and a film with Siddharth Malhotra. My diary is full. I love being busy with work.

Rumours are rumours

People have said all sorts of things about me that I did not have movies, I was charging too much for endorsements, I was broke, I was acting pricey, and other such things. My truth is that is love acting in movies and I want my work to speak for itself. Nothing else bothers me.

Fashion mantra

I like wearing clothes I feel comfortable in. I am lazy when it comes to dressing up but I have to do it for movies and events and the red carpet. I am learning and I have a long way to go. I dress in casuals when I am not shooting.
