Band width
Iranian film Offside is the story of some girls who try to watch a football world cup qualifying match but are forbidden by law because of their sex. Understandably, female fans are not allowed to enter football stadiums in Iran. If you are zapped, what about the recent news of Pragaash, the Kashmiri all-girl rock band, slammed with fatwa? What's wrong if a set of girls, passionate about music, get together after school and dream about a small band that will rock the world?
They imitate like the head-bangers, they ape the Elvis Presley gig with the mike in front of the mirror. And next morning, the girls suddenly realise that they can't perform. And to safeguard their chastity they are issued a fatwa! We quiz girls from Chandigrah and around on what they feel about the issue. Hear me out Walk like an Egyptian… Bangles, this all-girls band rocked and we loved it. So, what goes wrong with Pragaash? Ipshita Bali, who is part of a two-member band, Sahil-Ipshita, takes a moment to reply. If you are expecting it was a 'tough game for me story', this biotechnology graduate has had it smooth. "I wanted to do music; we formed a band and my parents were pretty okay with it." Ipshita has performed at almost all A-list places in Chandigarh and she hasn't faced a single uncomfortable moment. "We perform at places that are good and we are sure of. The owners of the place where we perform make sure I am taken care of." However, she feels bad about what has happened with the all-girls band in Kashmir, although at the same time she feels it is easy to threat or intimidate anyone on the Internet. "The matter is being blown out of proportion a little." Matter of security
Maya, lead vocalist, of theband Maya And Th Sublime Sage, talks about an essential thing — security. "Parents are often worried about their kids, boy or a girl, yes of course when we come from an Indian society then parents are bound to get worried," says Maya, who performs at Satva, Chandigarh. So no irritating glances… she answers graciously, "In live performances, if I know how to conduct myself decently. Besides, the owners of the place where I perform take proper care of me and my security." Why such a furore! We have loved Abeeda Parveen all the time. Now, someone manage to pile up guts to make a girls band and this is where it goes? Jasleen, from her band Just Ittefaaq, cannot understand why someone should be stopped from singing. She has reasons, as the girl has had all the support from her parents. "My mother writes lyrics, she has also sung though not professionally. I have performed at many places and now we are moving to festivals," says Jasleen, who did face opposition from her relatives. "They did not approve of a girl performing in pubs; then there are people who appreciate what I am doing, so who really cares for those who don't," she shrugs her shoulders. jasmine@tribunemail.com

Out in the open
Appetising sunshine, delectable breeze, aromatic drizzle, scrumptious moonlight and relishing 'surrounding' sounds make the food more palatable in some of the newly opened restaurants in Ludhiana. The immaculately dressed waiters, finely furnished interiors, interesting ambience are all there, only the ceiling on top is missing!
Far from the traditional fine-dine Indian restaurants, more restaurants have started to have open spaces to dine out. "As the city is increasingly becoming concrete and homes don't have enough open spaces, restaurants and cafeterias have started offering spaces to enjoy the food," says Sukhkaran Gill, from Bistro 226. Even terraces are increasingly being utilized for the additional seating space in restaurants these days. "Our rooftop dining space is the first choice of our customers," Gill says. "People like to eat in the open," he adds. "I enjoy the food more outdoors," says Pavneet, a businessman. "It's always fun to eat out in the open, preferably in the lap of nature. Enjoying a cup of coffee is always more fun in the cold weather," he says. While some restaurants offer completely open areas, some have the ceiling or partly covered rooftops. "It is good that such a culture of open spaces in restaurants is catching up," says Preet Chandhoke, a businessman. "It's good that people get to enjoy the weather and food together," he says. "Now we have many restaurants in the city where we can enjoy the terrific combination," says Rahat Bedi, a homemaker.

Tread carefully
Sachin Kalra
If you are just beginning a new workout programme, watch out that you don't fall prey to these common workout mistakes. These mistakes can mean the difference between an effective and an ineffective workout. They can also, lead to strain and injury if you are not careful.
Setting unrealistic goals One of the biggest mistakes is setting unrealistic goals. It's the too much, too fast syndrome. People expect dramatic results, and then they get disappointed. They expect the 15 kg they put on over a period of years to come off overnight, and that doesn't happen. Because of unrealistic goals people set, they set themselves up for failure and risk of injury or burnout. Not stretching enough The best time to stretch is immediately before and after workouts. Before stretching, take a few minutes to warm up as stretching cold muscles can cause injury. Flexible muscles are likely to be strained or pulled than tight ones. Lifting too much weight: The best way to guarantee yourself an injury is to try to lift more weight than your muscles can handle. Gradual progressive resistance is a far more effective and safe way to increase muscle strength. Not warming up prior to aerobic activity Muscles need time to adjust to the new demands aerobic activity places on them. Rather than hitting the treadmill on running for example, take a few minutes to walk, build up to light jog, and then hit your stride. Not cooling down after any type of workout Too many people wrap up their workouts without stretching. This leads to muscle strain and soreness. And this in turn can affect the coming workouts. Exercising in comfort zone: You want results, but how hard are you willing to work to get them? While it's true you don't want to overdo it, you still need to constantly challenge yourself to see those results. If we keep on following one routine our body adapts and doesn't show results. CELEB POINT
When I saw Neeraj Pandey's first film starring Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher, I was all respect for the man. Crisp, intelligent, emotional, the film had it all and I said to myself—I must work with him someday.
I met him once just to tell him that. Two years have passed and I heard from him saying that he is making Special 26 and he has a beautiful role for me. What stuck me was his genuineness. He hadn't forgotten! The role was of a woman constable, Shantiji, dedicated and loyal and endearing. It was opposite Jimmy Shergill. I was very happy to be one among the guys—Akshay Kumar, Manoj Bajpai, Jimmy Shergill and Anupam Kher. A confession—I have never met a director who is that clear of what he wants from his actors. He just said, "Do it. You will see it on the big screen. In Delhi cold, the shoot used to start at 5 sharp. And Neeraj would not waste any time in-between shots. I kept wondering—'So fast! What are we doing?' It being my first thriller, it had a pace which kept me in awe. "Film dekhegi to batana," said Neeraj. I've been intrigued by female constables. I loved the body language in a uniform and could see people in the unit smile when they saw me. "Hey we didn't recognize you and Jimmy was mighty impressed with my driving skills as he sat next to me. Be it playing word games with Akshay and Anupam between shots, be it enjoying this film thoroughly as an actor with Neeraj, providing everything as a director—all I had to do was enjoy and react to the brilliant actors. But I was till wondering! I saw Special 26 unfolding in front of my eyes—scene by scene, frame by frame. I wasn't seeing it as an actor. I saw it as an audience glued on the edge of my seat watching the sheer brilliance unfold! The thrill, the excitement of what next, the crispness and I understood what all we had shot and how beautifully it had been woven. All I could tell Neeraj was, "I am so proud to belong to this film, this experience, this brilliance. It will remain one of my most precious films with the nicest people to work with! Everything special! Reasons to call it my Special 26. Thanks Neeraj! (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

TRENDSETTER
Every person has a sense of style in his or her own right. Yet, there are only a few who’d attract the second glances, who have the power to make the camera go zoom on them. It could be the tousled hair or it could be torn jeans. Our this week’s face in the crowd Sonal Manik, 23, a business person, can be both easy going as well as choosy when it comes to dressing up.
Your sense of style is… I would describe my sense of style as lady-like. I like it when a woman’s dressing sense is feminine and elegant. Latest addition in your wardrobe… A Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 bag. Brand freak or street smart? A bit of both. It depends on how I style myself. Choose one—sporty, glamorous or chic I like to keep it easy going and chic for day time and routine occasions. When it’s something special, I definitely like to look glamorous. Your style icon … My style icon would be socialite Natasha Poonawala. For me, she is a fashion goddess. Who’s the worst-dressed celebrity around? Tanushree Dutta. After all, there has to be some sense of style to look good. One fashion trend you don’t understand… When people overdo stuff. It does nothing to enhance your personality. Your take on accessories… A woman is incomplete without accessories. It enhances your look and must be definitely used wisely. One thing that boosts your confidence… Appreciation and recommendation of my hard work. You would love to be dressed up by…. My imagination. That is what sets you apart from others. Vidya’s kahaani
The newly-married Vidya Balan is having a gala time sweeping awards for Kahaani and has also begun shooting her first film after marriage. The film is called Shaadi Ke Side Effects and Farhan Akhtar is her co-star. The versatile actress talks about movies, awards, co-stars, directors and Sridevi. Movies and roles I treat each film and role differently because they are different from one another. I want to be my best self in all the movies I do but I cannot choose one film or one role. It is like asking a mother to choose between her children. I am fortunate to work in good movies with good directors and it is a great feeling to win awards for the work you have done. Good choice I loved Sridevi's work in English Vinglish. She has been my favourite actress since Mr India. She is so versatile and has a lively aura and presence everywhere she goes. I also loved Priyanka's work in Barfi! She is so wise with her movie choices and I hope she is blessed even more. Emraan the co-star We did not interact much during The Dirty Picture because we only had a few scenes together. This time, while shooting for Ghanchakkar we interacted quite a bit. He is a professional while on set but we got along just fine. He is funny too. He is a big hit with people and I loved his performance in the films he has done and is doing. He is versatile. Kahaani's sequel It was amazing how Kahaani shaped up as in the beginning it was just me and Sujoy on board. Then he brought on the team and distributors. I am proud of Kahaani and I feel honoured that it was written for me. Sujoy has a very different approach to everything and he has finally got his due. I am excited to read the sequel's script when it is completed by him. Rajkumar Gupta I felt he proved himself with Aamir which was his first film. There was a comfort level during the making of Ghanchakkar as we have worked before in No One Killed Jessica. He is young and energetic and was convinced that I could do comedy.

Salman makes fun of Shah Rukh’s acting
Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan’s rivalry dates long back. Their animosity is now a story of the past. Time and again the two rival Khans of Bollywood make some embarrassing statement about each other and create controversy.
Last time Salman Khan backed his enemy Shah Rukh Khan when Imam Siddique passed a disliking remark against Shah Rukh but this time the hunk insulted SRK and said that he overacts. It all happened when he was shooting for an ad with actress Aamna Shariff. A prominent ad man-turned-filmmaker shot the ad. The shoot started off well enough. An eyewitness told, “Salman was his usual self. He did not ask any questions while shooting, neither did he expect anyone to interfere with his takes.” There came a point when the actor had to walk towards Aamna, and that too went off without a mistake. But the director was not happy, and requested Salman to walk up to Aamna again. Salman shot back, “Agar walk karana hai toh kisi model to bula lete!” The unit was bit shocked with Salman’s reaction but slowly the scene at the ad shoot became normal and everyone get back to work. Salman too resumed the shoot. Sallu had to shoot another scene where the camera was to zoom on his face and suddenly the product would fall in his hand. Salman gave his perfect shot in the first two takes, but the director wanted more perfection and asked him for another take. Undeterred by the previous snub, he requested Salman to shoot again so that he gets his expressions right. It was then Salman lost his temper, replied, “Agar acting hi karani hai, toh Hrithik ko le lete.” Before anyone could recover, Sallu in his true style delivered another knockout blow, “Aur agar over acting karani hai toh Shah Rukh ko le lete.”
Sense & sensuality
Remember Aditi Rao Hydari? She is the beautiful girl that acted in the movie London, Paris, New York. Though the film didn’t do quite well at the box office, the heroine was noted for her charm. Aditi Rao Hydari has also worked in movies like Rockstar, Delhi6 and Yeh Saali Zindagi.
Her latest venture Murder 3 seems to be the biggest break in her acting career. The film comes with the tagline “This Valentine……..love will be murdered”. No wonder then that the beautiful lady is all geared up to state her feelings for the emotion of love as the Valentine Day draws near. Commenting on her latest Vishesh Film’s movie Murder 3 directed by Vishesh Bhatt, she said “I can be a sweet-looking innocent girl but I may have a sensual side to me which I would love to explore. And I have done that in Murder 3. That is what actors are meant for. They just need to bring out things and do it effortlessly with fun.” She added, “This particular film is about relationships; there is love, lust and sex in every relationship and that is natural. So, there is that element. Murder 3 is far beyond these things…”

The technology savvy Parikshit
If you thought being updated on the latest gadgets and gizmos was a prerogative of the young, edgy and urban, actor Parikshit Sahni proves that age is no bar when it comes to keeping pace with the latest technology!
The senior actor who plays the role of Gyaneshwar, an elderly gentleman, on Zee TV's Aaj Ki Housewife Hai…Sab Janti Hai, makes it a point to keep abreast of the latest developments in the tech world and ensures that he buys the latest gadgets and downloads the latest apps. Sources from the set say that the actor is one of the biggest technology freaks around! While waiting for scenes to be set up or in between takes for his show, Parikshit can be found busy on one of his many hand-held devices - be it his iPad, iPhone or iPad Mini. "Be it games or the latest app to hit the market, Parikshit ji is the one person who would have tried and tested it. In fact I often go to him for advice on the best apps to use for whatever I need," says Anirudh Dave who plays the hero of the show. It looks like Parikshit Sahni can put all the young breed of actors to shame with his impressive knowledge of technology! The actor is equally popular for being a thorough professional.

The year ahead
If your birthday is February 6...
Every field of your life is demanding more attention and efforts. Be attentive and observe every situation seriously before acting on any issue. This year is not going to be too good. Therefore, it is very necessary to think before acting. Your words may be taken in the wrong sense by your family members. Even if you don't mean it, you will end up hurting the people you love the most. You will be very insecure regarding your relationship; this might ruin the peace of your mind. Your colleagues at work place will create many obstacles in your way. If you don't deal with it at the right time then you will have to face the consequences later. Your working partners will disappoint you with their negative attitude. You might break up some of your partnerships. Inconsistency in finances will keep you worried for a longer duration of time. Sources of income will reduce and you will strive for financial improvement. The year 2013 doesn't seem to be fair to the students as well. They will keep on trying their best, but will not get fruitful results. The people who are looking for a job need to be very careful. Make a concerted effort when dealing with a superior who pretends to be unaware of a certain situation, which is causing grief among co-workers. Youngsters can make the most of the day by reflecting on their goals and expectations. Only in this way will they be able to direct their own research. Although you have found that the majority often solicits your interpretations, you might want to mind your own business. You can discern a deeper truth if you read between the lines. When one group disappoints, you can always focus on another. Mood: Realistic and practical. Compatible signs: Capricorn, Virgo, Libra. Lucky colours: White, Red, Yellow. Lucky days: Friday. Lucky numbers: 6, 13, 21, 22. 27.
You share your birthday with Angad Singh Bedi (February 6, 1983, New Delhi), who is an actor, model and plays cricket for Delhi. He bats right-handed and his bowling style is slow left-arm orthodox. Unable to replicate the success of his father, cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi, he began a career in modelling. Angad has also appeared in a cookery show titled Cook Na Kaho on Star One. He was also the host of reality television show Emotional Atyachar on UTV Bindass before being replaced by Pravesh Rana.
