Residents of Dera Bassi demand railway station

Dera Bassi, February 5
Residents of Dera Bassi have demanded that a railway station should be built in the town so that people could get benefit of rail services.

Residents said Dera Bassi is a major place between Ambala and Chandigarh, but there is no railway station till now.

The Ghaggar railway station in Mubarkpur is not beneficial for the residents as it has no direct access and approachable road. Leaders of different political parties and residents said people of this city have to go to Dappar, Lalru or Ghaggar railway stations to board the trains.

Congress block president Harbhajan Singh, CPM block secretary Shyam Lal, CPI leader Karmchand Gholumajra and residents of the town had raised the demand of setting up of railway station here.

2 drug peddlers held

The district police has arrested two drug peddlers involved in the sale of drugs and seized smack and poppy husk from their possession.

SSP HS Mann said the CIA Staff, Sirhind, arrested Balkar Singh, a resident of Kapurthala, and seized 5 kg poppy husk from his possession. The Sirhind police arrested Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Bassi Pathanba, and seized 5 gm smack from his possession. — OC

Week-long workshop on leadership begins

A week-long workshop on topics like team development, leadership and management began at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University today.

The workshop was inaugurated by university Vice-Chancellor Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia. Dr Indi Seehra, director, human resources development, from University of Cambridge conducted the workshop.

Over 100 hundred delegates from management institutes and other universities are attending the workshop.

Addressing the workshop, Dr Seehra said effective leadership is important for a successful organisation and it should be democratic in nature and research-oriented.

He stressed on cross-culture diversity prevalent in the world in relation to employment opportunities. He emphasised on an individual's contribution to organisation to make it profitable.

The university has made an itinerary of his discourse with the students of business management and faculty.

Students and faculty from other institutes also got opportunity to interact with Seehra.

Seehra focused on entrepreneurial skills and clarified issues raised by students regarding admission in University of Cambridge through various scholarship schemes. He also talked about challenges faced by human resource department in the modern world.

Siblings’ murder
Mother records statement

Malti Devi, the mother of the two children who were found murdered in December, 2011, recorded her statement in court here today. She narrated the sequence of events on the fateful day when she found bodies of her two children in a pool of blood at their residence.

Inspector Charanjeet Singh, station house office of the Sector-39 police station, also recorded his statement in court.

Gaurang and Kavita Sahu were found murdered at their Sector-41 residence on December 16, 2011. The police had arrested their maternal uncle Rahul for the murders.

Rahul allegedly killed Kavita as she objected to advances being made by him. He allegedly also killed his nephew Gaurang, as he too objected to his intentions.

Graft charges framed against ex-ASI Des Raj

Chandigarh, February 5
The CBI court today framed charges of corruption against former Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Des Raj, who was arrested last year in a bribe case. The court also framed charges against head constable Vijender Singh, co-accused in the case.

The two officers had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a proclaimed offender, Tangri, for not arresting him. Tangri had been declared a PO in a cheque dishonour case and had been traced by the two police officers.

The CBI had laid a trap to catch the police officers. At the time, he had managed to flee, but was later arrested two days before his retirement.

Man acquitted of murder charge
Convicted of attempting to murder wife

The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge today acquitted a man of charges of murdering his sister-in-law, but convicted him of the attempt to murder his wife.

On July 1, last year, Ramesh, a Daddu Majra resident, had allegedly stabbed his sister-in-law Sonu to death. Sonu had intervened to save her sister Seema who was being beaten up by her husband Ramesh. While Seema sustained a grievous stab injury on the neck, Sonu had died on way to hospital. Sonu was married to Ramesh’s brother Rakesh.

The police had arrested Ramesh for her murder. Later, however, Seema turned hostile in court.

While acquitting Ramesh of murder charges, court convicted him for attempting to murder Seema. Quantum of the sentence will be pronounced on February 11.

Two killed in road mishaps at Mohali

Mohali, February 5
Two persons died in separate road accidents in Kharar and Zirakpur last night.

Suresh Gupta was killed in Zirakpur when a speedy car hit his motorcycle which he was riding along his friend Pardip Ram. The driver of the car fled from the scene.

In his complaint, Ram alleged that the driver of the car bearing registration number HR03N 9933 hit their motorbike when they were on their way to Panchkula from Zirakpur at around 1.30 am last night.

Gupta was shifted to GMCH, Sector 32, where he succumbed to his injuries.

In another incident at Kharar, Sarwan Singh from village Lathori died when his motorbike was hit by a Maruti car near Richview Resort at Sill village yesterday. Sarwan was riding pillion with Nirmal Singh, a resident of village Majri. Sarwan died on the spot.

Two cases have been registered by the police at the respective police stations.

Two thieves arrested

Chandigarh, February 5
The police has arrested two persons, Rajesh Kumar and Ravinder, and recovered stolen articles, gold jewellery and cash from their possession.

During interrogation, the accused confessed of their crimes. Recoveries made amounted to Rs 6 lakh, the Sector-17 police station personnel said. — TNS

Inter-College Best Physique Championship

DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, won the overall Panjab University Inter-College Best Physique Championship for Men for the session 2012-13 with 17 points.

GGDSD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh, secured the second position. The third spot was jointly shared by SCD Government College, Ludhiana, and KLSD College, Ludhiana.

In 60 kg weight category, Anil Bahadur of DAV, Chandigarh, secured the first position. Bhanu Bhagania of GP College, Alour, secured the second position and Sahil of DAV College, Hoshiarpur, secured third position.

Pushpinder Bharti of GGDSD College, Chandigarh, was declared Mr Panjab University.

In 65 kg weight category, first position was secured by Tapan singh of GGD SD College, Chandigarh. Sunil Sharma of Arya College, Ludhiana, and Kandey Bawa of GP College, Alour, secured second and third positions, respectively.

In 70 kg weight category, Azeem Khan of DAV College, Chandigarh, secured the first position while Parteek K Kalia of Government College, Hoshiarpur, and James Bawa of KLSD College, Ludhiana, secured second and third position, respectively.

Results:

75 kg weight category: 1. Harinderpal Singh of DAV College, Chandigarh; 2. Abhinav of SCD Government College, Ludhiana; 3. Anmol Saini of GKSM Governemnt, Tanda.

85 kg weight category: 1. Pushpinder Bharti of GGD SD College, Chandigarh; 2. Ajay Alexander of PU Campus, Chandigarh; 3. Rahul Rawat of PG Government College, Sector 11, Chandigarh.

90 kg weight category: 1. Suraj of SD College, Hoshiarpur; 2. Manpreet Singh of SCD Government College, Ludhiana; 3. Ajay of DAV College, Chandigarh.

+90 kg weight category: 1. Abhishek Kumar of KLSD College, Ludhiana; 2. Veerdavinder Singh of GP College, Alour; 3. Vishavjeet Singh of SCD Government College, Ludhiana.

James clinches power-lifting title

The final match of the PU Inter-College Power-Lifting (Men) Tournament was held today at the PU Gymnasium Hall, Chandigarh.

In 66 kg weight category, James Babu of KLSA College, Ludhiana, secured the first position by lifting weight of 470 kg. Gurpreet Singh of GPC, Alour, secured second position and Parwinder Singh secured third position. In 74 kg weight category, Ramandeep S Bajwa of PU campus, Chandigarh, was the winner. Ramdandeep Singh of Governemnt College, Karamsar, and Gurbhej Singh of Government College, Abohar, secured the second and third position, respectively.

In 83 kg weight category, first position was secured by Amit kumar of SGGS College, Chandigarh, followed by Gurpreet Singh of GPC, Alour, and Gourav Kumar of LR DAV, Jagraon.

In 93 kg weight category, Nitin Syal of LR DAV, Jagraon, secured the first position followed by Virdavinder Singh of GPC, Alour, and Jarnail Singh of GN KH, Abohar.

Doon Academy, SDDIET register wins in cricket

In the sixth match of the ongoing AIL Premier League, Doon International Academy, Mohali, defeated A&A Enterprises by 2 wickets.

Batting first, A&A scored 134 runs for 8 wickets in 25 overs. Arvind and Patrick scored 65 and 34 runs, respectively. Ricky and Happy took two wickets each. In return, Doon International Academy, Mohali, chased the target of 135 runs in 22.5 overs. Happy guided his team to victory scoring 51 runs. Bhanu and manish took 3 wickets each for A & A Enterprises. Happy was declared the man of the match.

In the second match, SDDIET, Barwala, defeated United-11 by 15 runs. Batting first, SDDIET, Barwala, scored 140 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the alloted 25 overs. Sahil Vaishnavi and rohit scored 41 and 33 runs, respectively. Vinay took 3 wickets. While chasing the target, United-11 scored only 125 runs. Nitin scored 48 runs while Aayush Gupta scored 41 runs in 16 balls. Ashish took 5 wickets by giving away 14 runs. Ashish was adjudged the man of the match. —TNS
