Dera Bassi, February 2
The protest of Gholu Majra residents against filling up of the village pond entered thirteenth day today. The protest is being staged under the banner of Pond Saving Struggle Committee.

Trade union leader Narinder Kumar Hansala and farmers’ union leader Gurbachan Singh Brana today met the protestors and expressed their support.

Earlier, SDM Inderjeet Kaur Kang and executive officer of municipal council, Lalru, Gurbaksish Singh had visited the dharna site and held meetings with villagers, but the issue could not be resolved.

Protesting villagers have been demanding the village pond should not be filled-up because it was a 400-year-old sacred place, with temples and a gurdwara situated on its bank. Protestors said cattle too depended on the pond for drinking purpose and it helped in storing rainwater.

Villagers said walls of the pond had been constructed with bricks by using funds provided under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. They said the Lalru municipal council, which has been controlling the village affairs after the dissolution of the village panchayat, now wanted to fill up the pond.
