More the merrier!
Gone are the days when a single macho hero dominated the screen in Punjabi movies. We are in for days of many stars simultaneously creating magic on reel…
Jasmine Singh

It is a festival and everyone’s invited to be a part of it; just in case you can’t, you can view on a big screen. The news is that this festival called cinema has just grown better and bigger, which means there is scope for more; which means at the same cost (Rs 70 for silver and 150 for a gold ticket) you will now get to see more drama and handsome faces. If all this reads gibberish to you, the pressing fact of the moment is that Punjabi flicks are rolling in the glory of multi-star cast movies.

So, no longer would you find a Yograj Singh or Varinder singing, dancing, fighting and not to forget romancing all alone! Now, it is more than one actor doing the same thing. The recent hits Burrah, Sirphire, Yaar Anmulle, Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 and Saadi Love Story only second this fact. The question that reeks from the walls of success is whether actors feel safe in the company of others or is it a safe bet for the director as well as producer or is it a simple one letter word — trend!

Actor calling

Almost every Punjabi actor has been a part of a multi-star cast film. Movies like Yaar Anmulle and Burrah have hosted more than twelve actors (three male and three female actors and even more). Actor-singer Navraj Hans who has recently sung a hit song in Burrah, Raba keydi gal di saza, talks like a true sportsman (which he is), “I look at a multi-star cast film as yet another opportunity where I have to work with my co-actors,” says Navraj, to whom the word insecurity means people behaving in different ways. “Movies like these are about healthy competition. Only actors who are not confident about their work crib about it. In fact, the actors who star in multi-star cast films have proved themselves in solo projects as well.”

One actor who has been a part of these films, Yuvraj Hans has proved himself amidst other actors who share the screen with him. He laughs on the mention of other actors eating into his space, “I never wanted to be an actor, so in my first movie Yaar Anmulle I had no idea about what happens in a multi-star cast film. Thankfully, it worked out well for me. And the same happened with the second multi-star cast Burrah, where again I worked with a dear friend Harish. We both took care of each other and there was no question of jealously, insecurity or falling short of time to show my acting skills,” adds the actor, who is doing his solo project in the coming month.

It is not new; we have heard it too many times —actors cutting into the role of their fellow actors, directors also doing the same with a film…but has this thing touched Punjabi cinema yet? Actor Kartar Cheema, who plays the character of Sikander in his upcoming movie Sarsa, opines, “Good work never goes unnoticed. If I act well, I will be noticed in the crowd as well. The same happened to Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 star Nawazuddin Siddiqui. I have seen him do smaller roles and still shine in whatever he does. Besides, I think Punjabi industry works as a close-knit family, so there is no question of adding or subtracting a role.”

Cut short

If this is a trend, it is definitely a treat for the Punjabi film audiences and also for those who see themselves as a talent. Director Jatinder Muhar, however, feels that the struggle increases in a multi-star cast film. To him, the trend is not about multi-star cast but about multi-character films, as directors are experimenting more. “Saadi Love Story can be looked at as a multi-star cast film, the other films are about ‘many’ important characters,” he opines.

English masala, Punjabi tadka
Gippy Grewal is not only about singing and acting; the man has dubbed for the latest movie in the Die Hard series and is happy to have done a good job…
Jasmine Singh

English movies dubbed in Punjabi…as hilarious as it can get! Here comes something that is going to add dollops of creativity, substance, seriousness and professionalism in this arena. With the official news of the fifth installment of popular Die Hard franchise, Bruce Willis A Good Day To Die Hard, releasing in Punjabi along with English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, Punjabi entertainment gets another booster.

Gippy Grewal, who is all geared up for his next Punjabi film Singh vs Kaur is dubbing for Jai Courtney, who plays Willis’ estranged son and partner in fighting the bad guys in the latest Die Hard installment. It definitely comes as a moment of joy for the singer-actor, who is a fan of Die Hard films. “Fox Star Studios rolled for this part. I had said yes to it a long time back, but I wasn’t talking about it because I wanted to be sure I was doing a good job; it shaped up well,” shares the actor who is dubbing for the final phase.

What do we expect with Die Hard in Punjabi—dialogues of jatt apna badla pura kareyga? “I know of English movies dubbed in Punjabi and they have been hilarious. This one, however, is very different. My dialogues have been written here and convey the message of the scene pretty well. They are not funny at all,” says Gippy, who is apparently the first Punjabi actor to be dubbing for an English movie.

Gippy is satisfied with his job, “I have done a good job. I have dubbed for Jai Courtney’s role, which is a big part and the Fox Star Studios are also marketing it pretty well,” he adds.

Growing fan-following for Punjabi cinema is a known fact; North India is also a growing market for English movies. “Movie-goers enjoy all kinds of cinema, English movies are a big hit, so Die hard in Punjabi will definitely be lapped up quickly,” says Gippy.

A dream start
Gurvinder Singh

As far as Punjabi movies are concerned, Jaswinder Bhalla has been-there-done-that. Howver, his journey has become all the more satisfactory as his son, Pukhraj Bhalla, has acted alongside him in the forthcoming Punjabi movie Stupid 7.

For 19-year-old Pukhraj, who is making a debut with this movie, it is like a dream come true. Acting is a different ball-game, he says. “Everything matters, including body language, expressions and screen presence; it was a great learning experience for me,” he adds.

His father seconds Pukhraj, “I have seen him grow up doing acts in Chhankata. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see him acting like a professional right from the start. We enacted one of the opening scenes in the movie together and he was quite impressive.”

Pukhraj is proud of the fact that he has made his debut alongside his father. “He used to make valuable suggestions as and when required and his guidance has
been very rewarding. The movie has everything, right from comedy, drama
to emotion. Making a start with other young actors was also very helpful. Although I was a bit nervous in the beginning, it has been a great learning experience,” adds Pukhraj.

As of now, Pukhraj wants to focus on good roles and stick to Punjabi movies. All the best!

When art celebrates history
As a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, Abninder Singh Grewal has created Gyarah Murti
Amarjot Kaur

In his attempt to pull out a few pages from the history of India’s struggle for independence, Abninder Singh Grewal pays a tribute to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi, by creating Gyarah Murti. “To mark the 66th martyrdom day of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, my team and I have created Gandhiji’s historic Dandi Yatra in fibre-glass,” details Grewal, a 66-year-old artist.

Every statue stands seven feet high and is a replica of the famous bronze Gyarah Murti at the Mother Teresa Crescent in New Delhi. The expression, movement and static momentum that stirs life in the statue of Mahatma Gandhi throws much light on the Dandi Yatra, which was held in protest against the imposition of salt tax by the British. “To replicate the Gyarah Murti, I took almost sixty photographs of the eleven statues from all angles. I wanted to make sure that the fibre-glass replicas were exact in expression, clothing and proportion,” says the artist.

Grewal was chosen among the top artists of the country to create Shera, the mascot of the Commonwealth Games held at New Delhi. Grewal and his team gifted as many as 1,000 models of the mascot, which were gifted by the Indian Government as mementoes to hundreds of delegates.

“I made a two-feet-high statue of the Indo-American astronaut, Kalpana Chawla, who died in the space shuttle disaster in 2003. While PEC refused to fund the statute, I chose to donate it to them. However, I was ticked-off when they later asked me to write a letter to them detailing the cause for donating the statue,” shares Grewal. “I gave the statue to the Karnal DC, which was later given to her parents.”

In recognition of his amazing artwork, Grewal was chosen by the Pushpa Gujral Science City, Jalandhar, to make a replica of the famous Iron Pillar adjoining the Qutub Minar in Delhi. He photographed the

Iron Pillar from diverse angles and created an exact replica of it — twenty-three feet high, with the exact dimensions in diameter. Grewal is perhaps the only artist to be awarded the Army Commendation Card by the Western Command for his amazing contribution to the Chandi Mandir Cantonment. The Buddha gifted by Grewal to UT Administration has been displayed at the Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh. He has also gifted a 16-feet-high dinosaur made in fibre-glass to the UT Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10. “The museum has a good collection of dinosaur fossils. I thought putting up a giant dinosaur statue outside would attract children and arouse their interest in the collection,” says Grewal.

Sadly, Grewal was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia a few days ago. He is now unable to continue with his creations for health reasons.

Says an emotional Grewal, “I never wanted to hang up my boots. I wanted to carry on creating, giving, contributing whatever I could to art. I seek your good wishes and blessings, so that I can regain my health and contribute to art more and more.”

A woman’s canvas
An exhibition, celebrating the achievements and contribution of Amrita Shergil, showcases the works of contemporary women artists
Amarjot Kaur

She was born on January 30, 1913, and was the first Indian woman to pursue contemporary art — Amrita Shergil has indeed defined the revolutionary strokes that painted the image of today’s modern woman. To commemorate her birth anniversary, a group of contemporary women artists have organised a series of solo exhibitions at the Sobha Singh Art Gallery at the Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16, Chandigarh. The month-long exhibition will be inaugurated by Prem Singh, former principal of the Government College of Art on Wednesday.

The exhibition will feature the works of women artists from across the country, including Sadhna Sangar, Sabia Khan, Anjali Aggarwal, Niku Guleria, Kumadi Prajapati, Sandeep Walia, Daljit Kaur, Rajeshwary Priyaranjani, Kamalpreet Kaur, Shweta Verma, Amita, Harsimran Kaur, Taranjeet Kaur, Shiwani Singla, Ashvini Bhole and Ashu Verma.

While detailing the course of events that the exhibition intends to tread upon, Sadhna Sangar says, “We formed this association in 2003 to encourage women to display their artistic genius.” Adds Prem Singh, “It’s disappointing to see that other apex art forums have not taken the initiative to celebrate the achievement and contribution of Amrita Shergil. Here, we are promoting the eternal spirit of art.”

Artists Niku Guleria and Anjali Aggarwal are much excited about their paintings, which are a blend of their integrity towards womanhood, nature and technology.

Heart’s desire

Here’s a candid chronicle of defiance that palpitates within the deepest thoughts of Rajeshwary Priyaranjani, a Bangladesh-based artist, art critic and a senior writer with the Canvas magazine. She crafts an expression of anxiety, dilemma and dejection faced by women in her paintings, which will be exhibited at the Punjab Kala Bhawan on February 11, 2013.

An epic of emancipation, the title under which she will exhibit her works, seeks inspiration from the torture that women have faced. “I have dedicated my exhibition to ‘Nirbhaya’, the girl who was recently gang-raped in Delhi. It’s not just Delhi, women across the globe are tormented just because they are women,” she explains. “My mother, Ferdousi Priyabhashini, who is a renowned artist in Bangladesh, was subjected to brutal torture by the Pakistan army,” she reveals.

Rajeshwary’s revelations find an echo in her work that depicts gloomy faces of women that express their deep desire for liberation while demanding recognition for their existence. “I have painted a woman in the colours of our flag. I believe that art can be the language of humanity and for me it is life,” she says. “I have been fighting throat cancer for a couple of years now and art, for me, is a medium to vent out my pain and suffering.”

GET PHYSICAL
Flex your body
Anil Juneja

One of the most important things you can do for your good health is to spend a few minutes a day on flexibility training. No Doubt it is one of the most important but neglected areas of fitness. Flexibility training is so important that if you have only 30 minutes to exercise, you should spend at least 10 minutes on flexibility training.

Flexibility is the ability to move joints or muscles through their full-range of motion. Flexibility is not only required in exercises and sports but it is very much needed in all our day-to-day activities such as bending, walking, lifting etc. I have seen many people spend hours in the gyms but if asked to touch their toes they can’t. It’s because they spend enough time in the gyms but still ignore flexibility training because they don’t know the importance of flexibility in overall fitness.

Stretching our body is immensely helpful in maintaining fitness. A flexible joint can decrease your risk of injury because it has the ability to move through a greater range of motion. Being flexible helps reduce soreness of muscles and improve posture.

Warm up routine

While doing flexibility training always do a short warm-up first to prepare the body for stretching because cold muscles do not have enough elasticity to be stretched. And don’t expect results very quickly because it is a slow process, especially if your body is stiff. The best part is flexibility training can be done at any age. The more often you do it, the more flexible you will become.

When you do flexibility training after workout, it loosens up your joints and muscles and increases blood flow to your muscles which speeds muscle recovery. So you are much less likely to experience soreness if you stretch your muscles after a workout. Many of my bodybuilder friends walk like a robot after weight training; so if they incorporate post workout flexibility session, they will also be able to walk like a normal person. Many of you must have experienced that a few years ago you were able to scratch your middle back but now it has become difficult to reach your middle back with your hands, it’s because you lost flexibility. Your flexibility may decline as you age, so taking time to stretch on a daily basis can help you maintain your flexibility level.

Yoga shows the way

Yoga is the easiest and safest way to gain flexibility. Yoga pose or any other stretching exercise should be held as long as it is comfortable and does not cause any pain or discomfort. Each time you stretch your body, try to slightly increase the duration. While practicing, it is very important to avoid forcing your body. Duration of the hold can also vary from exercise to exercise as well as depending on the fitness level of the practitioner.

CELEB POINT
Jago India Jago
Divya Dutta

I was waiting for my friend for lunch at home. Where are you? I called her. Hey, she said, a traffic cop has caught me for breaking signal on the yellow light. So, I either pay him up or give him my licence! I am not going to do either as I am not wrong, she shouted.

What will the common man do if they can’t trust our police!

Why should we trust our own police anymore? The main problem for people not coming forward to help those who need it, in a rape, murder or theft either is that they think that kaun panga lega! Common man thinks the police will harass me only and nothing will come out of it! Some political or power pressure will come and the police will release them somehow!

Then who will protect us? When was the last time you felt protected in the company of a cop and you. genuinely didn’t feel that he’s going to let you down anyway!

I have fond childhood memory of an anonymous threatening letter that came to us when we were in Punjab. The matter was reported to the police and I saw this very suave man in uniform come to our house to ask my mother a few questions. The moment he came, I felt safe. He is going to make things fine, he is going to catch the bad guy, I had thought. While leaving he put a reassuring hand on my petite shoulder and said bete darna nai, main hun na, kuch ni hoga! He caught the culprit and put him behind the bars.

How often can you say that today? What went so wrong? Why can’t I find that reassuring smile on anyone’s face?

I wonder what has gone wrong with the entire system because it’s all vicious and one affects the other.

As I saw the Republic Day parade as always on the television instead of my usual patriotic high and pride, I felt disillusioned. I was looking at those innumerable faces for a face that I could trust, a face in that crisp uniform, which would bring back my childhood faith…kuch nahi hoga, main hun na!

Do it for us dear police, we need you as never before! Rebuild our faith and trust in you. Let’s not fall prey to a decaying system, give me the assurance to save a fellowman so I know when I will be standing alone, you will be with me. I wonder where that inspector uncle must be right now who made me get rid of my fear. I look for him in all of you, don’t let me down.

STAR TRACK
Good going

Ameesha Patel is happy with the good opening that Race 2 has got and the fact that her character was noticed as well as liked by the audiences. She talks about Bimbo Cherry, her new films and more.

Name game

I love that people have loved me as Cherry in Race 2. I could not have asked for more. When Rameshji narrated the script to me, I knew I had to do the film no matter what the length of my role was. I had fun playing the character. I am happy my fans loved it and made me feel special too.

After effect

Shortcut Romeo is my next film with Neil Nitin Mukesh which will release in April. I have a strong and bold character in it which is different from Race 2. I am very happy with the way the film has shaped up. Neil and I have become buddies.

Work matters

My goal is not to be at the top but to do good work, feel good about myself and do memorable movies. People still remember the blockbusters I did at the beginning of my career like Humraaz, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, and Gadar. I want to do more memorable and successful movies and be the best I can be and look the best I can.

From my stable

Desi Magic film is my dream project made under my home production in which I am playing a hot and sexy character. I have a completely different and new attitude in it. It is an entertainer at the end of the day. We plan to release it this year itself.

Four in a row

I have four releases in 2013. I am excited like I was when I made my debut. You will see me in Shortcut Romero, Bhaiyyaji Superhit with Sunny Deol which is an out-and-out comedy and my dream film, Desi Magic.

Aaradhya has her favourites!

Like grandfather, Aaradhya Bachchan also likes to keep herself updated with the latest gadgets and gizmos. Aaradhya Bachchan, daughter of Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan turned one recently and she tunes to her favorite rhymes and TV shows of her choice on the iPad all by her herself, informs her grandfather Amitabh Bachchan.

"Aaradhya turns on the iPad to her favorite nursery rhymes all by herself... picks up remotes wherever she can see one and points it to the TV in a pretense to put it on," Amitabh wrote on his blog.

"What a fantastic generation of our world and what a pity we shall never be there to see it evolve into a world that shall be governed and controlled by little kids and their deep acumen of the cyber," added the 70-year-old veteran. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has two grandchildren from his daughter Shweta Nanda, Navya Naveli and Agastya and he very often shares Agastya's smartness in handling and using modern gadgets through his blog.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is surprised to see his fourteen-month-old grand daughter Aaradhya tuning on to iPad for her favorite nursery rhymes by herself. Aaradhya Bachchan is very attached to her dadu Amitabh. He shared on KBC how Aaradhya recognised him on TV when a song of 70's was playing on television.

Aaradhya first made her public appearance at her grandfather Amitabh's 70th birthday bash hosted by Jaya Bachchan. Aishwarya is playing a doting mother to her daughter and has not yet signed any films. But news is doing the rounds that she will sign her comeback project very soon.

Learning ground

Neil Nitin Mukesh is 31-year-old but feels like a 15- year- old. He has done ten films in five years and learnt that nothing comes easy in life or in Bollywood. He wants to let his work speak for itself instead of blowing his own trumpet. He talks about yesteryears, actresses and his hobbies.

Hobbies

It's important to be in touch with your hobbies and have a life beyond films. That helps you grow as an actor. You meet people and grow. You observe life and people and relax and breathe and that helps you. I love photography as a hobby, singing, playing the piano and even bartending and hosting parties. All of them help me unwind. I even compose and sing songs for my films.

Retro beauties

I would love to romance all the old and beautiful heroines like Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Nutan, Waheeda Rehman, Parveen Babi, and Zeenat Aman. In Hollywood, my favourites are Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. All of them had a distinct style.

Looking ahead

I am excited about David, a horror film with Sonal Chauhan that we shot in Fiji and one more movie releasing this year.

Train trek

Ranveer Singh had to reach the set of Gunday in South Mumbai from suburban Mumbai. His crew was already waiting for him when he was stuck in traffic. So he got out of his car and took the local train to reach really fast. His car reached forty minutes after him and he even managed to get some fans on the local train who were pleased to have him on board.

Spice up

Maaza's new campaign featuring Imran Khan and Parineeti Chopra has got a great response. Parineeti is fast becoming a favourite on the ad circuit after giving a new twist to Kurkure. This is a great year for her because she has three films in her kitty along with important endorsements that suit her bubbly image.

After the break

David is Lara Dutta's first film after she became a mother last year. She is happy being a mother, a wife and getting back into shape. She is taking her time choosing scripts. She is excited about the release of Bejoy Nambiar's David.

The hunt is over

Subhash Ghai has been tom-tomming about his new discovery Mishti for Kaanchi. She is a Bengali starlet whose name is Indrani Chakraborty who has done a few Bengali films. She will have to complete a few Bengali projects before Kaanchi begins in February.

Well done

Richa Chadda feels that Lincoln should and will win at the Academy Awards this year because it is a fantastic and a moving movie and Daniel Day-Lewis is taking home the Best Actor trophy for sure. She is overwhelmed after winning the Filmfare best actress Award in the Critics category.

Token of appreciation

Shahana Goswami plays the character of Aamna in Deepa Mehta's Midnight's Children. Salman Rushdie has been closely associated with the movie. He even autographed a copy of his cult novel and gifted it to Shahana as a token of his appreciation for her work in bringing the character alive.

On a song

Producer Ram Mirchandani of Shaitan fame is under pressure from the Sindhi community to do away with the item song Damadum Mast Kalander featuring Sarika in the film David. But director Bejoy Nambiar will not budge and neither will the producer who is a Sindhi himself. They feel the song has been used in a tasteful and respectful manner.

Fact of the matter

The Presidential office in the White House was staged at Centre Hill Mansion in Petersburg, Virginia. The Ford’s Theater Box reconstruction, one of many locations around Richmond, Virginia was used extensively. In the spring of 1865, President Abraham Lincoln travelled through Washington, D.C., after America’s Civil War got over. In the midst of celebrations, Lincoln is assassinated. Lincoln’s Last Night is a gripping account of one of the most dramatic nights in American history. It is about one gunshot that changed the country forever.

A potpourri of problems

Star Plus’ Khamoshiyaan seems to be riddled with problems. At first the show took a while in going on air, then the story had to be changed due to low TRPs and now Mohit Sehgal has stopped shooting due to money issues. Rumours claim he hasn’t been paid since a while and wants the makers to clear payment before he resumes shooting.

What’s cooking?

Aman Varma who is going great guns enjoys cooking. He talks about his experience in a cookery reality show.

How was the experience on the show?

It was fun and interesting to meet new people and talk to them. This show was a good opportunity to interact with people from the TV world.

Can you cook?

I won’t say I am a great cook but I ensured that I treat my guests pretty well. I think every one should know the basics. I love eating eggs I can make several egg dishes.

What do you like to eat?

I like eating eggs and chicken. I like to eat light food and I avoid eating out in the restaurants.

Do you see yourself competing well in this cookery show?

No (laughs). Cookery shows are highly competitive and I am not a master cook.

Why didn’t you take up Bigg Boss?

I was approached for Bigg Boss but the money factor didn’t work out. I chose to play the role of Ravan instead, which was a better prospect for me. Doing reality shows is great but I don’t like the backbiting part of it.

At her own pace

Manini Mishra who is currently doing Adaalat and was earlier seen in Mahadev ensures that she always has some free time on her hands.

You haven’t been doing much TV these days. Why?

Well there aren’t many good roles. I am enjoying Adaalat on Sony with Ronit Roy. Playing a lawyer is fun and I shoot few days a week so time isn’t an issue. As a child I wanted to be a lawyer. Now with all the role, my dream has come true.

Your were seen in Mahadev too. How was it working in the show?

Yes that was a short and sweet role. But I don’t do much TV also because there are hardly enough good roles on TV.

How do you manage your work?

I hosts events and give lectures too. There is no dearth of work. My only condition is that the role should be good. I enjoy meeting and talking to people like I recently did when I went to Raipur. People there were super fun and very chilled out. They were actually enjoying life.

How’s your husband Mihir doing?

He’s fine. He has a business to manage, which he does alongwith his TV career. We are both very practical people unlike many newcomers these days. Look at the new face in TV shows, they get popularity at such a young age. Most aren’t even seen again after the show is over. The huge success that they get isn’t easy to handle. Actors are creative but they have to be practical too.

And the winner is...

In the scintillating grand finale of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2012, Pune’s Jasraj Joshi was declared the winner of the series. Shenaz Akhtar from Ludhiana was second, Vishwajeet Borwankar from Mumbai sealed the third spot. In this edition of the musical extravaganza, Jasraj was mentored by Shankar Mahadevan. Shenaz and Aman were mentored by Sajid and Wajid and Vishwajeet was coached by Rahul Ram. Yo Yo Honey Singh, Shankar Mahadevan, Sajid-Wajid, Javed Ali, Ankita Lokhande and Gurmeet Chowdhry were all present at the finale. The highlight of the finale was glitzy and action packed performance by the Punjabi rapper, Yo Yo Honey Singh.
