Accused remanded in judicial custody

Mohali, January 18
One of the accused in the suicide case of the Excise and Taxation Officer, Ranjit Singh, was produced in a local court today which remanded him in judicial custody till January 28.

Rajinder Singh, alias Gopi, who was arrested yesterday, was sent to the Patiala jail. Earlier, he was taken for a medical examination to the Civil Hospital.

ETO Ranjit Singh was arrested by a Vigilance team headed by Amandeep Kaur on March 29, 2011, after he was allegedly caught taking a bribe to release the goods of a trader. He was released on bail on April 20. He allegedly committed suicide on April 22 at his Phase II residence.

The wife of Ranjit Singh had alleged that her husband was implicated in a false case and was forced to commit suicide.

The police had booked Amandeep Kaur, SP, Vigilance Bureau, Harminder Singh, Havildar, Rajinder Singh, Rajiv Sood and Paramjit Singh.

A case was registered against them under Sections 7 and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Sections 120-B, 166, 167,186 , 195, 218, 332, 353, and 306 of the IPC .

Three booked for fraud

The police has booked three persons on the charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust.

In his complaint, Piara Singh, a resident of Sukhgarh village, had stated that Vishvas Gupta, a resident of Panchkula, had borrowed Rs 25 lakh from him in May, 2011, for a period of two months. In July, he was given a cheque that bounced. In another case, Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Morinda, complained to the police that Rahul Singla and Anku, who were running an office in Phase VII, had taken Rs 5.40 lakh from him for sending him to Singapore. But he was sent to Malaysia. A case was registered.

Pinjore shootout: Eight accused arrested

Panchkula, January 18
The Panchkula police has arrested eight persons involved in the shootout that took place in Pinjore on Wednesday.

A youth had suffered serious bullet injuries and three others were injured when eight youths had launched an attack on them while they were on their way to a Panchkula court.

The arrested youths were also produced in a local court today, which sent the main accused, Pinky and Amit, to a three-day police remand.

The police has also impounded two cars and recovered weapons that were used in the attack.

The other six accused, Aman, Pola, Satish, Rajender, Baldev and Gurmeet, were sent to judicial custody. The accused said old rivalry was the reason behind the attack.

The incident took place on the Bitna link road, NH-22 near Pinjore.

One of the assailants also shot at the victim, Johny, in his leg.

The victims were to attend a hearing in a brawl case.

The injured were rushed to General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, where Johny, who suffered bullet injuries, was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, while the other three, Himanshu, Ladi and Parikshit Chaudhary, are undergoing treatment.

A similar clash had taken place between the two groups on August 9, 2012, at Kalka.

Man robbed at knifepoint

Chandigarh, January 18
Four miscreants allegedly robbed a man of Rs 500 near a wine shop in Colony Number 4 last night.

Jasvir Gupta, a resident of Colony No 4, alleged that Subhash Kumar, Ajay Yadav, residents of Colony Number 4 and Nadhim, a resident of Sector 52, Ravi Kumar, resident of Balpur village of Gonda district in UP and their accomplice Jag Narain robbed Rs 500 from him on knifepoint near a wine shop in Colony Number 4 last night.

The police has registered a case of robbery under Section 395 of the IPC and arrested all the accused except Jag Narain in the case.

The case is under investigation.

One booked for cheating

Chandigarh, January 18
The UT Police today registered a case of cheating against a Mohali resident.

Sangeeta Sharma, Sukhna Enclave, Kansal, Mohali district, alleged that Anil Puri, a resident of Sector 2, Dashmesh Enclave, Mundi Kharar, Mohali district cheated her of Rs 5 lakh for sale/purchase of plot. A case under Section 420 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 39 police station, Chandigarh. —TNS

Skeleton found in Morni forest

Panchkula, January 18
The skeleton of a 45-year-old man was found from a forest near Billopur village, Morni, this evening. The victim, Bachna Ram, had been missing for the past eight months.

Ram was a resident of Raipurrani. "The skeleton was noticed by children," said Assistant Sub Inspector Paramjeet Singh, in-charge of the Morni police post. The police said a probe was on into the matter.

Badminton championship begins

Chandigarh, January 18
The Chandigarh State Veteran Badminton Championship kicked off at Indoor Badminton Hall of Sector 42 here today. The championship is being organised by the Youngsters Badminton Club under the aegis of the Chandigarh Badminton Association. The tournament is being conducted in the plus 35, plus 40, plus 45, plus 50, plus 55, plus 60 and plus 65 (singles and doubles) categories.
