In the public eye
That’s human nature! Pleasures of life that come for free are often not valued. Attach a heavy price tag and suddenly the value shoots up, people who can afford queue up to possess those, and who can’t, simply aspire! It’s true for food that you get in small restaurants vis-à-vis five-star hotels, it’s true for clothes that you get in kiosks vis-à-vis mutliplexes, it’s true for a piece of art by Anjolie Ela Menon put up at a public place vis-à-vis in some esteemed gallery or museum abroad.
No wonder, the artist is asking that her painting be returned, for it was more or less used as a notice board and space to put up posters at the Esplanade Metro Station. It was taken off five years back and the restoration work unfortunately never commenced. Art for public, distorted by public! This is, however, not the only example of the such a case and artists are miffed about the incident. Charanjit Matharu, Chandigarh-based artist, who made a sculpture at the Leisure Valley decades back, can easily empathise with Anjolie. “If a piece of art made for public is not given due respect, it is an insult to the artist. It’s part of the artist’s identity and the years of life he has dedicated to art. The government and people should value it.” Though Anjolie gifted the Rs 4 crore painting to the Metro authorities, Matharu feels that even charging money for art that is meant to be put up at a public place doesn’t mean that it should be treated abrasively. His sculpture at the valley also doesn’t bear his name, a gesture he thought would be made by the authorities as a mark of respect to his work. But it’s not just at public places that art pieces are put up to be forgotten, even museums don’t do enough to maintain the beauty of works. As Diwan Manna, a renowned photographer, rues that art pieces are randomly displayed at most of the museums in India. “Do museum authorities ensure that proper lighting is provided, so that people can actually enjoy those art pieces? Or for that matter, does the staff working in museums have enough knowledge that light falling on a particular painting can make colours fade.” Sensitisation of people towards art is a solution but it’s not an easy task. Diwan suggests that a concerted effort is needed by educational institutes and government bodies to achieve the same. “People who understand art and its value should only be appointed to manage art affairs. As for others, a beautiful painting might just be a showpiece hung on a wall.” Another artist, Neenu Vij sites an example of European countries, where paintings by popular artists are put up almost at every railway station and other public places. “Even if the works are half-a-century old, they will look beautiful because they are taken care of. People take pride in their art and culture” Veteran artist, Shiv Singh, whose sculptures are placed at different public places, agrees. He adds that people should pay more to visit museums, only then they will start valuing art works, “Probably that’s the reason why people abroad understand and give importance to art.” Only then people will respect art, respect artists. Art work is often displayed at public places and many artists have contributed to Chandigarh’s sculpture park at Kalagram (top).
Preserving the past The likes of MF Hussain, Arpana Caur, KK Hebber, Ram Chandran, Bhupen Khakhar, Ganesh Pyne have gifted their works to the Panjab University, which were put up in October last year as part of the exhibition to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Fine Arts department. The acquisition of these paintings began in 1962, and the exhibition was special since it showcased paintings which were as old as the city. Their restoration work was, however, taken up by Tirthankar Bhattacharya, Chairman of the Department of Art History and Visual Arts Head of the Department, just a few days before the exhibition.

Fair & square
Mona Priya Jagat’s entry into the entrepreneurial world was by chance. With the backing of a commerce degree, Priya started with restaurateur husband Abhay Jagat, initially just as a helping hand. Today Priya’s brainchild Vanity Fair has turned into a successful biannual event that the city elite never fail to attend. Being brought up in Chandigarh, it has given her en edge to decipher the market better. She has been part of the changes that the city has gone through, and worked around them to reach her goals. Priya shares her take on success: Belief in self If you have faith in your idea, it works. I personally loved exhibitions. Our first fair was really small, with just eight stalls and some hundred invitees. I wanted to bring quality goods under one roof in pleasant surroundings, not just some hall. Whispering Willow was new property with us, so it also became a chance to introduce the people to it. Twelve years hence, it has become an event that takes newer look every season. Persistence pays No idea is a success overnight. One needs to give one time and energy to it. It’s not necessary that things turn out the way you want at the word go. Here, have patience and carry on. If you apply resources strategically, things will come around the way you want to see it. Seeing the response from people and exhibitors, we have made two shows a year- spring/summer and fall/winter. And expanded! Be consistent Entrepreneurship is one area where you need to maintain standards. You can’t be good one day and then fall to rise again. One needs to maintain set standards or even better with time. We have been very steady with the goods, the service and every little detail. There is no scope for being erratic here. Get innovative In any area that’s artistically inclined, innovation is the key. So far, we have had 18 shows. From invites to look and feel, introducing entertainment we work on each different aspect. People lose interest in anything that becomes stagnant. So, continually introduce something new. Vanity Box came into being to fill the vacuum when people do want stuff and its not fair time. We further expanded with studio which caters to interiors. Challenge self It’s important to set higher goals for yourself. With each new venture, we try to do better than before. We don’t just source stuff, but we have manufactures, who get things made on special orders. Keeping a tab on market forces, being accessible to clients and providing stuff and services, each aspect is monitored closely and bettered. mona@tribunemail.com |

Language of peace
Malay Datta, a Kolkata-based artist, takes inspiration from nature and religion and radiates peace and tranquillity on his canvas Amarjot Kaur Art has a language of its kind, perhaps as abstract as art itself, but vivid in every stroke of the brush that paints the expression of the artist's disposition. When art lurks for desire, it draws momentum from the most quivered thoughts within and when it aches for peace, it transcends through the paradigms of belief, faith and tranquillity. In his search for peace, Malay Datta, a Kolkata-based artist, dances attendance to the tunes of both nature and religion, beautifully infused with vibrant acrylic colours while splashing tranquillity on canvas. Arranged symmetrically at Art Portfolio, Neepa Sharma escorts you through the swanky art gallery while elucidating on each painting and you discover the thought expressed. While Ganesha and Parvati's portraits radiate divine maternal love exuding intense peace through the trenchant bond, Buddha's portraits speak volumes about peace through meditation. However, one cannot quite skip but notice the birds and animals, which are in sync with the solitude depicted in the paintings. Question about the same and Datta says, "I wanted to highlight nature, thus the use of animals and birds. Also, I have made use of two of my favourite colours, green and blue. While the blue symbolises the sky, which is limitless, the green justifies my love for nature, or perhaps the nature itself." The artistic outburst prevails in Dutta's voice when he details the techniques used for creating the portraits, "I've essentially used acrylic paints and the painting technique is of a 'realistic' form. In few paintings, I have used sponge and then rolled it over to get the desired impact. Also, I've attempted to alter the texture of the canvas by carving concentric circles from the shoe soles on the sponge and later painting and rolling them on the sheet." Moreover, Datta, who also plays flute, has depicted the instrument to serve as a metaphor for peace and serenity. "I like the momentum that is exhibited in each of the painting. Every portrait has some movement to it and since Buddha is synonymous with peace, I think the exhibition serves its purpose," says Ashish Gupta, a visitor. Bhavna, an MBA student and an artist, says, "I love the way Datta's depicted Buddha. It reflects upon his insight and it certainly brings peace to anyone who looks at it." |

Tame the green-eyed monster
Simmi Waraich At times I feel jealous of my friend when he does better than me in school. I don't like the feeling but I cannot help it. I have only one friend and he has lots of friends. Aman, Chandigarh Jealousy is a normal human emotion. While growing up, it helps if one can play a game called, 'catching your thoughts'. It means when you feel jealousy or sadness or anger, immediately write down the thoughts associated with it. This helps to change the way we are seeing the situation. Often we give a situation undue importance. Write down your strong points. Every time you catch yourself criticising yourself, change the thought to 'it's okay. I have a lot of strong points too'. Work on expressing, developing and maximising your strengths daily. Ask yourself--what are the things my friends and family like in me? Finding your strengths makes you a happier person, builds your self-confidence and that is something one needs to work on more than getting more marks in school. Confidence helps a lot in life. n Try to identify more people you could be friendly with. Just like we go to school to learn about things and increase our knowledge, similarly we also need to work on improving communication with friends and family. We can do this by setting small targets like 'this week I will talk to two boys in my class about the game they like'. n Work on creating more positive experiences and keep those in mind. Simple things like spending time with family, a laugh with a friend, taking the dog for a walk or feeding a stray cat or dog. My girlfriend says I am very jealous and possessive but I just care for her a lot and I do not wish people to take advantage of her. Am I wrong? I don't think so. I don't want to lose her. Sumit, Chandigarh. Jealousy of a partner is a way of controlling and trying to be in power. So what is your fear? That you are scared of her cheating on you? Often people who are possessive keep hounding a partner till they actually cheat-- is that what you want? Think about it. If she meets a person who is accepting, non- controlling, calm, maybe she will go ahead and take that choice. Would you want her to do that as well? Let go of the jealousy, focus on what you have going for you. It's your choice. Choose to respect her and you will get respect. (Waraich is a consultant psychiatrist) |

The cult cuisine
Here's a sparkling new food venture for all vegetarians in town to embark on, all you need to do is drive your swanky ride straight through the rain-washed city roads and head to 5 AAB in Sector 22.
In a humble pursuit to tender objectivity to the Punjabi folk, their tradition and lifestyle, AS Nagpal has conceptualised the ambiance while rendering it the aesthetic taste that is synonymous with the state and how it was before partition. You might relate the concept with that of Haveli's, but when it comes to Punjab, we can all reconcile with the stereotypes. This one busts a few myths about the traditional Punjabi restaurants as instead of offering a-la-carte dishes, 5 AAB breaks the monotony with a thaali loaded with approximately 20 items and is priced at a pocket-friendly Rs 225. "The thaali would comprise a series of food items, including starters, seven to eight vegetarian dishes with a couple of breads. The menu would change every day," says Nagpal. "Moreover, unlike other restaurants, we would not be storing food for the next day; our prime motive is to serve the best to the Tricity. We will also be opening our other branches soon," he added.

The Filmfare nominations are out. While most are good and pretty sensible, here are some people who should have been nominated for their performances
Hits and misses In continuation of … Nawazuddin Siddique for Gangs of Wasseypur II: The Filmfare committee has recognised the Gangs of Wasseypur movies as one movie. Nawazuddin owned the second film and floored everyone with his performance. He deserves a nod for this spectacular performance instead of his work in Talaash. His performance as Faizal Khan has to be seen to be believed! Worth the effort Kareena Kapoor for Talaash: Talaash and Heroine were different movies but we can safely say that Talaash was a better movie and she even had a more dignified role in the movie. She is the most beautiful ghost we have ever seen and the performance was straight from the heart and natural. For courtesy sake Yash Chopra for Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Jab Tak Hai Jaan was majorly flawed but we got to give it to the director for making us cry and feel for the characters even today. His masterful direction rose above the flawed script and the Filmfare could have nominated him for his swan song. His youthful and contemporary vision shone throughout the movie. Job well done Reema Kagti for Talaash: Reema surprised one and all by the way she handled and executed Talaash, making it engaging and extracting fine performances from the entire cast. Class of his own Aamir Khan for Talaash: He will not come to collect his award but that does not mean he should not be nominated altogether! His performance has been among the finest we saw last year and he held us all in awe with his restrained and layered act of a complex and emotional character. He did it with finesse and class. By a whisker AR Rahman for Jab Tak Hai Jaan: It's shocking to see that A R Rahman and Yash Chopra, who gave many hit films together, aren't nominated for this year's Filmfare. Gulzar's lyrics and Rahman's music was much appreciated.

Sana Khan’s candid chat
Sana Khan is a household name, thanks to her appearance in Bigg Boss Season 6. But as fame comes with a price, Sana too is paying a price. The actress is upset with the rumours doing rounds. In a chat, the actress comes clear about her relationship with co-contestants Rajev Paul, Vishal Karwal and Aashka Goradia…
Link-up with Rajev Paul I was hurt with the fact that in spite of staying in a 'so-called' modern society, people expect you to tie a rakhi on your friend's wrist. Rajev said that he finds me attractive. It did not mean he loved me or we were going to stay together forever. Link-up with Aashka Goradia I do not know from where that question even came up in the first place. She is like my elder sister; someone I could look up to when I was upset and happy. I was away from home and when you're away, you need that one person to just hug and she was that person. I am shocked as to how people gave it a different name. Not living with Vishal Karwal If I was living in with Vishal, I would have broken his feet had he behaved with me the way he behaved on the show. I am very much from Mumbai and I have my own house with my parents staying along with me. So, I do not need to stay in anybody's house.
