Fire, feast…fun
The traditional fervour associated with Lohri is incomparable. And when it comes with a modern flavour, the fun is doubled…
Jasmine Singh

This is a law and universally applicable too, unless you are hell-bent on challenging it. If you want to reap the harvest, you must first sow the seed. Apply it to the most mundane things like wanting to eat something great; either move to your kitchen or make an effort to drive to a nearby restaurant and order it. Likewise, if the farmer doesn't work relentlessly in the fields, how can he enjoy the harvest, sing and dance around the bonfire and celebrate Lohri. So, we apply the universal law here! Well, one can celebrate in different ways, especially when tradition can be tweaked a wee bit. Celebrate Lohri in the customary fanfare with some new toppings!

PS: This time families are dedicating Lohri to their lovely daughters who made their lives special.

Traditionally yours

There are legends that explain Lohri; while some associate it with Dulha Bhatti some celebrate it to mark the harvest of the rabi crop. For the younger generation it just translates into one word — party. Sukhdeep Brar and his friend Nitin Bhasin wouldn't care much about the tradition as long as they get to make merry with friends. "We will head for Kasauli, and celebrate Lohri singing and dancing," shares Nitin, still not sure why we celebrate Lohri! "I guess winter says bye to us on Lohri,' he turns to Sukhdeep for approval. On the other hand, another youngster, Dalip Singh Grewal, a young pilot, plans to be with his family. "I am not too sure about the legend behind this festival, but I like to be with my family on this day."

There are no classes on tradition, culture and folklore, we believe in 'suit yourself funda' in life and so youngsters are not expected to know the stories. Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi seconds the take. "Festivals have become up-market now. From fields to homes to discotheques they have indeed travelled a lot. Lohri is no exception. Holi also is celebrated at discotheques instead of the streets now. However, if a festival becomes popular it sure generates interest. Lohri probably is becoming one."

Eat, drink & be merry

Culture is now served with seasoning at hotels and restaurants! But of course, they keep it close to the tradition. Parents celebrating the first Lohri for their baby girls will have a surprise offer at the Pewter Room on January 13. "This year our celebrations are special, as they are dedicated to all the baby girls for whom it is their first Lohri," says Annu Bains, director, The Pewter Room, Chandigarh, and mother of a daughter.

Rajeev Kakar, vice-president corporate, hotel The Gaur, has grand plans for Lohri. "We have a bonfire for the guests. We have added Shahi tukra and Tiramisu to the menu on the festival day."

Eating out isn't the only new addition to the festival, Design Emporia, a global platform for all the Indian designers, have come up with an exclusive collection for its discerning global citizens, especially from Punjab, on this Lohri. This special Lohri collection is all about giving you a festive feel. Design Emporia offers free shipping on all orders worldwide. Different reasons to shop online this Lohri!

Cause & effect

After the gory incident in Delhi, most families this year are dedicating Lohri to their girl child. RJ Pankaj from 92.7 Big FM informs that they have taken a special initiative for the girl child. "All our shows will be hosted by the girls and we are also celebrating Kudiyan Di Lohri, which marks the spirit of the festival and celebrates the birth of girls."

Star Speak

The festival of Lohri is celebrated just an evening before Makar Sankranti. The festival has a direct relation with the Sun, a factor of fire and power, entering in Capricorn sign. The Sun will enter Capricorn (northern hemisphere) at 6.58 am on Monday, therefore Sankranti starts then. According to astrology, the auspicious day for celebrating Lohri will be Sunday and not Saturday. Recently, certain organisations have been changing the dates of festivals according to their own convenience, which is against the norms of religious traditions as well as inauspicious from the astrological point of view. The period beginning from January 14 till July 14 is known as Uttarayan.

This year Makar Sankranti is more auspicious astrologically. The Saturn is already exalted in Libra sign after a period of 30 years. The vehicle of Sankranti is the elephant and the year is 2013, which symbolizes prosperity. Secondly, it is a Siddhi Yog coinciding with January 14, which is also auspicious. It is believed that items bought or investment made or any relationship initiated on this day will be good. One can purchase gold, diamonds, land, buildings, machinery, electronic items etc on this day.

Theatre person Dr Atamjit has given years to his art. What he wants is more people to come forward and appreciate…
Mona

Having given thirty-eight years of his life to active theatre, the journey of Dr Atamjit has been a happy one. Having written, acted and directed numerous plays, he has his kitty full with awards and he is proud that theatre today has a say in the cultural scenario of the region. Starting with Rishtian da ki Rakhiye Na to Kamloops Deean Machhiaan, Main tan Ik Sarangi Han and Tatti Tawi Da Sach, his plays have received accolades in India as well as abroad.

As his play Panch Nad Da Paani got underway on Saturday at the Theatre for Theatre Festival, Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh, the noted director shares excerpts from his journey.

Then & now

There have been numerous highs for Punjabi theatre since I began. Today women are open to acting as well as direction. One can think of doing something serious on stage, though it is difficult still. There are enough playwrights as directors, what we are still wanting is more women playwrights.

Sustained effort

Although Punjabi theatre is rich today, people still do not spend money on it as they do on dressing, eating, drinking or driving. The state has not been able to provide the infrastructure that we expected. I could sustain this long as theatre has not been a profession or commercially driven venture for me. My job as a Punjabi professor earlier and now MD of an IT company helps me hold ground.

Punjabi roots

I would rather be called an Indian playwright, than a Punjabi playwright. We have hardly explored the wider horizon. With Panch Naad Da Pani, I intentionally aim to do that. Yet, I would not choose Hindi over Punjabi because my language has built me and I am not ready to sacrifice its strength.

It’s ironical

Seeing the rousing response my plays got in Canada and America, I
did envision a bright future for Punjabi theatre out there. Unlike here, people are ready to spend money on watching theatre but they do not have time to create one. Here, we have people who want to work, but there is lack of resources.

Panch Naad Da Pani

I wrote it two decades back but it’s even more relevant today. When Turks ruled and Mongols attacked, a Rajput princess Naila could stand up and make a decision that had far reaching consequences. Two bhaand characters Tulla and Thulla have been received very well, as much the music by Atul Sharma and designs by Ashok Sagar Bhagat.

Up next

I plan to enact a play Gadar Express here on the centenary of Gadar Party. I did one in Sacramento, but I am not sure if I will be able to that. Also, I want to write on murders and suicides of women.

Classic case
Fifteen-year-old Eash and Eashan Goyal are the youngest Western classical musicians to have made it to the Limca Book of Records
Manpriya Singh

Western classical music is a serious business in this house. So much so that the 15-year-old refers to Beethoven as Ludwig van Beethoven. “He’s my ultimate inspiration in music. Then there’s Mozart.” Eash Goyal loves playing the piano and takes you back to where it began and throws in a couple of more names from the western classical genre—JS Bach, Scarlatti, Franz Schubert. “We would just listen to their music initially. Didn’t know the names but when we started listening more, I liked the pieces and then we started playing and got more and more interested.” Joining him is his twin brother Eashan Goyal, who plays the guitar. The Class X students have just entered the Limca Book of Records and await a DipABRSM (Diploma of The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music).

Shares Eash, “We sent our names for the Limca Book of Records and they asked for our ABRSM certificates. We were the youngest to have received them. That’s why they entered us.” He refers to the Grade 8, an advanced level in piano and classical guitar. While growing up, a chance encounter with a keyboard led to a more serious affair with the piano and the rest is history. “I was also already into western music and but only limited to artistes like Madonna and Michael Jackson,” chips in the mother, while showing their last performance at Zorba Amphitheatre in Delhi.

She adds, “While everybody listens to music, as children they would be interested in playing it, not just listening to it.”

As for Bollywood, the duo remains unconnected and happily so. “Among today’s artistes we like Usher and listen to a couple of other rock pieces. We don’t really like Bollywood music. Moreover, there are no good Indian composers making music in the instruments that we play.” Neither are there any plans nor any dreams of joining Bollywood, unless the reality shows in India steer towards Western music. “We are interested in giving live performances and composing music.”

The school alongside continues and so does the balancing act. “As we come back from we start practicing on the instruments. Almost everyday, we play for two to three hours. In the evening we begin with our studies.” No wonder, the sound of symphonies and sonatas playing loud is a routine. Western classical music is a serious business in this house.

pet passion
A dash of affection
Poonam Bindra

Navneet “Our Niku is a real brat of the first order and we have spoiled him silly but no regrets” chorus Navneet and renowned pediatrician Dr Sarabjot as they look fondly at the black and brown dachshund. Four-and-a-half year-old Niku is an inseparable part of the family and gained more importance after their children left abroad for further studies. The down side is that now when the children come for vacations, they are not allowed to hug in front of the little brat for he has become so possessive of them.

Niku sleeps in their bedroom and recently when they started using an electric blanket to ward of the chill, they felt guilty that their beloved pet had only a mattress in his bed. So the doctor got a heating pad from his clinic which was used to keep small babies warm and put it under his bed! Vouching for the intelligence of this particular breed, Navneet shares “Every day he does not expect a car ride but on Sundays we have to give him a spin in the car and he loves going to the PAU grounds.”

Dr Sarabjot adds, “Believe it or not as soon he sits in the car he opens the windows for he knows how to operate the power windows!”

Niku seemed to be understanding our tete-e -tete for he immediately ran to the drawing room to pick up a cushion and tote it around the room to show his antics.

Navneet explains, “This is a complete no no for him so all he is doing is attracting attention.” Whenever he is hungry he will go and tap his biscuit box! A totally non-veg  fellow, Niku is very fond of green peas and papaya. We are told that the vegetable vendor cannot enter the precincts of the house till he bribes him with a few pods of peas. “We do all his grooming ourselves and bath is once a week affair which is again a funny ritual for he senses it and he will hide in the funniest of places,” says Navneet, who calls him the biggest stress buster especially for the hard working doctor who feels so refreshed playing with Niku dear. Their advice to wannabe pet owners is, “Bring in a pet if you want to rear him like a child for that is what they respond too.”

Anushka: Ranveer and I never dated

Anushka Sharma is undeniably hot but is treated like a regular guy by her male friends. She talks about her movies, co-stars and more.

Being choosy

I got a lot of offers after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and most of them were of small town girls, which was not different from my character Taani. They didn’t excite me. I was very clear from day one. A lot of people came to me and advised me to sign lots of films. Six months after Rab Ne... I was sitting at home and it was obviously not easy, especially after you are launched in a big film. And then Badmash Company happened and it was completely different and I just went with my instincts.

Top directors

After Band Baaja Baaraat, I had made a list of directors I wanted to work with and I have already worked with four of them — Yash Chopra, Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Kashyap and Raju Hirani. The fact that these four directors envision me and I can fit into their world gives me lot of happiness. I wanted to work with Vishal ever since I saw Omkara. I am glad I did a film with him now and not at the beginning of my career, as I wouldn’t have understood his characters. I have become less judgmental and more accepting with this experience.

Personal attention

Well, I guess there is nothing else to talk about since I am not doing anything wrong or saying anything against anyone. I am not creating controversy so people think let’s link her up! Shahid, Arjun and Ranbir are all my friends and I do not know the difference between my male and female friends. I am pretty broad-minded and I am like any normal 24-year-old. These guys too treat me like a guy. If I had to hide anything I would do it inside my house, why go out with anyone in public?

Clear cut

Ranveer Singh and I are close friends and we are linked because we did back-to-back films and the first film was very successful. We were seen together during every award show sitting next to each other but our entire crew was also there. Ranveer and I were never in a relation and I have always been single. I know his family well and he knows mine too. People can write what they want.

Rumour mills

I want to state that there was this whole episode about Sajid Nadiadwala’s film and all that was rubbish. I have not been approached and I don’t know why my name was dragged in. I would like to work with Salman but this is not the film. I have been simply pulled into this whole tamasha.

On cloud nine

Tena Desae Tena Desae is happy with the success and good reviews she received for Table No 21. Even her friend Dev Patel messaged her to congratulate her. They worked on The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel together. She celebrated by having a lavish dinner with her family and friends in Mumbai.

Matru fails to charge-up

The response to Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola has been lukewarm. Reviews are average. The film has its heart in the right place but is slow and a tad inconsistent.

The performances by Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma are disappointing while Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Azmi steal the show. We guess it is a one-time watch, not for everyone.

Fat not weighing her down

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's weight does not bother her at all but it is bothering the media a lot. There have been too many comments made on her and they have not been in good taste. She looks radiant and gorgeous and to make her face look slimmer, she has chopped off her hair and wears it straight and sleek. She looks amazing.

All well: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Salman, Ajay are worst actors

Nominees for this year’s Ghantas have been announced and guess what? Players and Housefull 2 have been nominated for the Ghanta Awards 2013. Actors Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn are also nominated. Salman has been nominated for his performances in Dabangg 2 and Ek Tha Tiger. The Ghanta Awards reward the worst in Bollywood, similar to the Razzies for Hollywood. Ajay Devgn received a nomination for his roles in Son of Sardaar and Bol Bachchan.

Only movies released in 2012 are eligible to be nominated in 13 categories, including the Worst Actor, Worst Actress, Worst Couple, Worst Song, Worst Film and Worst Director. The nominations for Worst Film are Housefull 2, Department, Student of the Year, Players and Son of Sardaar. This is the third edition of the Ghantas, having started “rewarding” the worst of Bollywood in 2011. According to founder Karan Anshuman, it was the lack of a refund mechanism in place that prompted him to start the Ghantas three years back.

“There are more than a dozen film awards to reward the good films but how many to reward the worst of Bollywood? So we started our own show.” A jury of eminent film critics and journalists decide the nomination list for the Ghanta Awards. The jury consists of Rajeev Masand, entertainment editor and film critic, Karan Anshuman, film critic, Sudhish Kamath, film critic, The Hindu and Sahil Rizwan, film critic. The winners are decided through public voting at TheGhantas.com. Last year more than 1,00,000 people voted for the Ghanta Awards. The award show is gaining interest in Bollywood too as actress Sonam Kapoor surprised everyone and turned up to collect her award for the “WTF Was That” category.

The Ghanta Awards 2013 will be held on February 8.

Salman's new diet

Salman Khan is health conscious. In order to keep his tummy in shape, because of the constant partying, he has adopted a new diet.

Problem area

Salman Khan works out with dedication and regularity. His biceps and triceps and legs are in shape but his paunch is visible and he did not like that. He has given up his favourite home-made biryani. He is completely off rotis and rice, but drinks plenty of water and has loads of fruits. And to stop himself from reaching out for that cigarette, he just fiddles with an unlit one for as long as he can.

Protein intake

When you cut down on carbs, you need to increase your protein intake. Though he has cut down on his meat intake, he is making it up with protein shakes. He is also not smoking anymore so he does not take smoking breaks and that increases his productivity. Most importantly and surprisingly, Salman has started reporting on shoots on time. He feels fitter and fresher.

Working out

Due to his health issues, he has been advised to stay away from heavy weights. Instead of his earlier routine of lifting heavy weights, he now lifts lighter ones but has increased the sets with the lighter ones. It has been 12 weeks since Salman started on this healthier new lifestyle. And if sources are to be believed, this could also be for his role as a military man for Sohail’s film which goes on the floors very soon.

Ashwini comes from London to take Gauri back. Prateeksha by mistake drops and breaks the gifts that Ashwini has got for Gauri. This upsets Ashwini. Asavari passes the blame on to Prateeksha. Why Drashti missed Vivian's wedding

Drashti Dhami aka Madhu of Colors' Madhubala, skipped her co-star Vivian Dsena and friend Vahbbiz Dorabjee's wedding on January 7 at Pune. A source informs that Drashti couldn't attend the wedding as she was shooting for her show.

It was earlier reported in the media that this on-screen couple hardly talk to each other on the sets.

But then our source went on to tell, "There is nothing like that. Drashti and Vivian are co-stars and they do crack a joke or two at times. However, they are far from being friends. The only reason for Drashti's absence from the wedding was her busy shooting schedule."

Well, it seems Drashti is turning into a workaholic. She chose to work even on her birthday on January 10.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is January 13...

On this Lohri day you are entering a phase in which no one can slow down your enthusiasm. It is the right time to start a project you have had in mind for a while. Be courageous; great opportunities lie ahead. There will be mutual support among family members. More emphasis has to be given to work. Certain limitations might be there in finances. Moderate health is indicated.

Use a brief break in June to assess and make adjustments on your priorities or a relationship. You can also simply capture the moment and consider the progress made. Be patient and persevere without rushing to a conclusion. Remind yourself of the purpose of what you are doing. There is much work ahead, but the time is not yet ripe for you to act. Don't assume anything or meddle, but let nature take its own course. Stick to tending your own backyard; your interest will flourish and give back much more. Do not hurry; shortcuts at this point can spoil your chances.

You'll adopt new methods, but someone won't appreciate them and will criticise you. You'll be very giving towards your loved one, even if someone will try to intervene in your relationship and irritate you around April. In this particular moment, try not to waste energy in fighting. If you learn how to adapt yourself to the situation in hand, you will gain assured success.

You're in a fantastic mood at the moment, but don't expect to make great strides in a project. Sustained effort is dull but rewarding. You might suffer a minor setback in September. It doesn't do any good to share the blame and you actually should come out ahead if you handle the situation with maturity. Your contact list starts to pay-off in a big way.

Although time is running short, you can still end up a winner. You will have slightly more than your needs for the time being, but there will be a lot in the pipeline.

Mood: Confident.
Compatible signs: Taurus, Libra.
Lucky days: Thursday and Saturday.
Lucky numbers: 4, 6, 19, 20, 26.

You share your birthday with Imran Khan (January 13, 1983, Madison, Wisconsin), who first appeared as a child artiste in Aamir's film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988 and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander in 1992. He played the role of young Aamir Khan. Then he made his debut as a lead actor in film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na in 2008. It was the biggest hit of the year. He was nominated for the Best Male Debut Award at the 54th Filmfare Awards, which he won along with Faran Akhtar. His luck will shine in 2013.
