Teacher booked on molestation charge

Ambala, January 6
The city police has registered a case against a teacher of SA Jain Senior Secondary School, Ambala, on the charges of molesting a girl student of class IX. The father of the victim has also filed a complaint with the school management in this regard.

According to information, the girl student has alleged that the teacher had been molesting her for past few months. On the complaint of victim’s father the police has registered a case against the teacher.

The school management has also issued a notice to the teacher and a committee of the management members has been constituted to check the allegation of the girl. The president of the school management, Dinesh Jain, said: “It is a serious matter and the entry of the teacher has been banned in the school till the probe is completed.”

Mock tests for JEE, JET aspirants held

The Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi, conducted a series of mock tests for the aspirants of JEE and JET - 2013. The tests were conducted to provide the aspirants with a platform to check their preparations for the entrance tests. More than 3,000 candidates appeared for the tests.

Students from various government and private schools of Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Ambala, Patiala, Dera Bassi, Lalru, Banur, Mubarkpur, etc., visited the institute and got enrolled for the mock entrance tests.

Prof Avtar Singh, chairman of the Sri Sukhmani Group of Institutions, urged the aspirants to work hard to achieve their goal of clearing JEE and JET entrance examinations. He also announced cash prizes of Rs 10,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 for top three rank holders in the mock tests.

Three children receive burn injuries

Ambala, January 6
Three children received serious burn injuries on their faces at Ambala City this evening following a leak in an LPG cylinder. The children were rushed to the Civil Hospital at Ambala City. They were identified as Mohammed Arif (11), Armaan Khan (7), Tanveer Khan (5).

According to hospital sources, two of the injured, Mohammed Arif and Tanveer, have been referred to the PGIMER, Chandigarh.

According to information, Mohammed Tariq, residing in a rented accommodation near Badshai Bag Gurdwara, was preparing some eatable items. The children were playing there when the leakage started and their clothes caught fire. All three children sustained serious burn injuries on their faces. — OC

Man donates Rs 51,000 for accident victim

Zirakpur, January 6
Sonu Sethi, a fan of renowned Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan, celebrated the birth anniversary of his hero by donating Rs 51,000 for the treatment of an accident victim.

A girl, who lost her one leg in a road mishap in Zirakpur on the Ambala-Chandigarh Highway around a week ago, is undergoing treatment at the PGI, Chandigarh.

Sonu, along with his daughter, shared the birthday cake of Maan while wishing early recovery of the victim. He also organised a langar of 'bread pakoras', tea and other eatables at his Sethi Dhaba situated on the Ambala-Chandigarh Highway on Friday.

Sonu said he always used to celebrate Maan's birthday by helping the needy and the poor of the area. He had also launched a free ambulance service to help road accident victims.

DJ booked for defacing public property

Zirakpur, January 6
The Zirakpur police has registered a case against a local King DJ for defacing the property of the National Highway Authority.
The case was registered following the complaint of officials of the National Highway Authority under the Punjab Prevention of Defacement Act-1997.

The police said officials of the National Highway Authority alleged that the accused King DJ had pasted their advertisements on the polls and boards of the NHA along the Ambala-Chandigarh National Highway. — OC

Ambala Cantt railway station to be upgraded

Ambala, January 6
Railway Minister Pawan Bansal said formalities were being carried out for converting Ambala Cantonment railway station to a world-class model station. The then Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee in the 2010-11 Rail Budget had announced this project for Ambala.

Bansal made a surprise visit to Ambala Cantt Railway Station today noon. He was travelling in Paschim Express and broke his journey at Ambala Cantt without any prior information to the Railway authorities. He stayed there for around 40 minutes. In the meantime, DRM Ambala Railway Division PK Sanghi and senior DCM GM Singh also reached there. Later, he said the construction of bottling plant would also start soon. He said land acquiring process was in the pipeline for this project.

He said the single railway track between Ambala Cantt and Dappar would be converted to double soon.

Referring the pending project of laying new rail line between Naraingarh and Panchkula, he said the Railway Ministry had written a letter to the Haryana government for the consent of its financial support in the project. After getting the reply from the state government, construction work would be started immediately.

The Railway Minister also met some of the passengers on the platform and inquired about the problems being faced by them at the railway station. Later, he left for Chandigarh. — OC

MLA’s brother granted bail

Harbhajan Chaudhary, Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary’s brother, who was arrested by the Panchkula police for shielding the MLA, under section 216 (harbouring a criminal) of the IPC, was produced before a court, which released him on bail.

The Baddi police, too, had registered the same case against Harbhajan. It had registered a case under section 216 a few days ago against the two brothers of the MLA, Harbhajan and Madan Lal Chaudhary. Madan has absconded.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Baddi, S Arul Kumar said: “As Harbhajan has been arrested by the Panchkula police, we will be interrogating him.”

According to the police, Harbhajan had given Rs 50,000 to the MLA while he was in hiding.

Yesterday, the police procured fresh arrest warrants against the accused again.

Even after 50 days of Jyoti’s murder, the police is clueless about the whereabouts of Ram Kumar Chaudhary and his accomplices, Gurmeet, Dharampal and Paramjeet.

On December 21, the police had raided Ram Kumar ’s residence with the arrest warrants against the MLA and his accomplices, Gurmeet, Dharampal and Paramjeet, in the Jyoti murder case. Jyoti (24) was found murdered in Sector 21, Panchkula. She was putting up as a paying guest in Sector 21, Chandigarh. The post-mortem had revealed that she had an abortion.

Candlelight march held

Meanwhile, around 40 persons took out a candlelight march near Haryana DGP SN Vashisht’s residence at Sector 2 in Panchkula in the evening. A huge police force was present there.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Virender Sangwan, the investigating officer in the Jyoti murder case, reached the spot and pacified the protesters. He promised that he won’t let the Doon MLA, Ram Kumar Chaudhary, take the oath at the oath-taking ceremony to be held on January 8.

The same organisation had staged a protest on Saturday also at Sector 17.

Youth attacked in Mohali

Mohali, January 6
A youngster of Phase VI suffered serious injuries in an attack by four or five persons who were armed with sharp weapons and a revolver here today.
The victim, Iqbal Preet Singh, who was allegedly hit with an axe on his head by one of the attackers, got six stitches on the head. Iqbal Preet’s brother Jasbir Singh, who was with him during the attack, escaped unhurt.

The incident occurred at the Phase VI rehri market at about 11.30 am when Iqbal Preet Singh, along with Jasbir Singh, went there for a hair cut.

Iqbal Preet’s father Gur Iqbal Singh claimed that his sons were attacked by his neighbour Tarlochan Singh and his friends, including Gurpreet Singh Guri, a resident of Sector 23, Sarbi from Mohali village and Manpreet Singh Walia from Balongi village.

Notably, Gur Iqbal Singh and his sons had opened fire at Tarlochan Singh on August 8 last year following a dispute. The police had also arrested the father- son duo, Gur Iqbal and Jaspreet, in this connection after registering a case under Sections 307, 506 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act at the Phase I police station.

Terming today’s attack an act of revenge, Gur Iqbal Singh claimed that one of the attackers was brandishing a revolver.

The area DSP, RS Sohal, said the police has recorded statements. “A case is being registered at the Phase I police station in this regard,” said Sohal.

Purse snatched at Mani Majra

A snatching incident was reported from Mani Majra where two motorcycle-borne youngsters snatched a purse containing Rs 35,000 from a woman.
According to the police, Shashi Dogra, a resident of the MHC, Mani Majra, Chandigarh, complained that two person sped away on their motor cycle after snatching her purse containing cash and an ATM card on Saturday. She said she could not note down the registration number of the motorcycle.

Meanwhile, a case under sections 379 and 356 of the IPC has been registered at the Mani Majra police station. Investigation is on.

CLTA trainee Pranav Suri (Ind) defeated Alex Solanki (Ind) by 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of the boys’ U-18 ITF Junior Circuit Tournament at CLTA stadium, Sector 10, Chandigarh.

He then went on to defeat second seeded Balaji Lakshmanan by 6-2, 6-1. In girls’ category, another CLTA trainee Nandini Sharma defeated second seeded Aboli Goghari (Ind) by 6-4, 6-1.

Qualifying matches for both boys’ and girls’ ended today. Other Indian players who have qualified are Gagan Sharma and Paramveer Singh Bajwa.

The main draw matches will start at CLTA Tennis stadium tomorrow.

PG GCG, Sector 11, Chandigarh, emerged as the overall winner of the Panjab University’s Inter College Fencing (Women) Championship held at PU Gymnasium Hall, Chandigarh.

Dev Samaj College for Women, Chandigarh, clinched the second spot followed by GGD SD College, Chandigarh.

In sabre team event, PG GCG, Sector 11, Chandigarh, defeated Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana.

In sabre individual, Himani of GGD SD College, Chandigarh, clinched gold while Rita, PG GCG, Sector 11, Chandigarh, bagged the second spot.

In foil team event, PG GCG, Sector 11, Chandigarh, was the winner while Dev Samaj College For Women, Chandigarh, and PU Campus, Chandigarh, clinched second and third place, respectively.

In foil Individual, first spot went to Garima of PG GCG, Sector 11, followed by Baljeet Kaur of the same college and Komalpreet Kaur of Dev Samaj College for Women, Chandigarh.

Manjeet School of Cricket beat Ropar by 93 runs

In the inaugural match of 1st Gurdev Singh Hayer Memorial Tournament (U-13) in Chandigarh, Manjeet School of Cricket defeated Ropar by 93 runs.

After winning the toss, Manjeet School of Cricket elected to bat first and scored 196 runs in 20 overs. Anshul scored 62 runs with the help of 13 fours in 47 balls. Shubham scored 60 runs in 21 balls with the help of 8 fours and 4 sixes.

In reply, Ropar could score only 103 runs in 20 overs.

The second match of the tournament was played between Shivam Cricket Club, Ludhiana, and Satluj Academy, Panchkula. Satluj Academy won the match by 101 runs. After winning the toss, Satluj Academy elected to bat first and scored 214 runs in 20 overs.

In reply, Shivam Club scored only113 runs in 20 overs.

The 2nd black belt test was conducted today at Chi Kwang Do Martial Art Academy, Panchkula.

Five students and instructors had appeared for the test. Rudal Kumar was promoted to 3rd degree black belt while Kavita was promoted to 2nd degree black belt. Amita Marwah, Hema Rana and Sayansh Jindal were promoted to 1st degree black belt.—TNS
