To beat the best in his field is what Lakhwinder Wadali aims at — he is passionate about his art and having received the best training at home has been a plus point. He zealously continues uphold the family tradition and charter new territories. In Chandigarh on Saturday to announce KJH Punjab Fashion Week, this 31-year-old shares notes from his remarkable journey.

Legacy bearer

I got music in legacy. The training started right in my childhood and continues till date. Singing is my life. This is what got me and my family recognition. In music I have immersed myself and here I belong.

Loss & gain

Being a fourth-generation artiste comes with its own set of challenges, which have to be overcome in time. I think I have come far. I share the stage with my father and uncle, the famous Wadali brothers. But I am not stopping here. My rival is my father and I am striving for the day when he says, ‘Yes, you are the best’!

Right & wrong

Life is and will always be a fine mix of sach-jhooth, acha-bura, dhoop-chaon. It’s for each one of us to find our calling and follow it. Any singer from Punjab is aware of his or her limit. I try to observe it; if others do that they will be happy.

Commercialising art

Commerce is part of any venture. I did try to promote issues by working in movies like Akhiyan Udeek Diyan and Chhevan Dariya. While the first one was based on female foeticide, the other was on drug abuse. They sank without a trace. I do want to continue working on concept-based projects, but producers to back them are few and far between.

Coming soon

My new album Ishqe Da Jaam would soon be out, which is my fourth venture. And, yes, like always, this too has one song with my father and uncle. Since they don’t do an album of their own, this is our way of reaching out to their audience. I have also done a Bollywood song for Riteish Deshmukh. Shows make me travel and music continues to anchor all aspects of my life.

Talking fashion

The Punjab Fashion Week brings fashion designers from Delhi and Mumbai to Chandigarh. Rocky S, Munish Gupta, Sanjeeta Khaira, Prerna Bhardwaj and Amit Kashyap are a few names who have their stalls at the two-day exhibition at Hotel Shivalikview, Chandigarh. Dresses, jewellery, shoes, bags and more are what you will find here. Khurana Jewellery House, Maahi Design by Mukesh Mehra, Pammi Sidhu and Rattan Sarees will showcase their ware. The evening is reserved for a fashion show.

Back to the roots
Harbhajan Maan and his brother Gursewak Maan echo that their upcoming album Satrangi Peengh 2 is totally Punjabi in flavour with a special emphasis on Dhadi music
Jasmine Singh

Electronic, hip-hop, dub-step… the concoction of different kinds of music sure sounds interesting. But how about having something ‘neat’ for a change; something like neat Punjabi music, something like Satrangi Peengh 2, an album that brings Harbhajan Mann and Gursewak Mann together after two years? This is no concotion, it is no blend; it is pure folk Punjabi especially Dhadi music.

Better late than never

It took Harbhajan and Gursewak two years to release Satrangi Peengh 2 after the success of Satrangi Peengh. The elder brother Harbhajan Mann takes the lead. You can’t miss his dimpled and warm smile, which makes everything sound matter of fact. “Gursewak is a pilot and he was busy. We couldn’t get much time to work together. Also, we did not want to compromise on the lyrical quality because Satrangi Peengh is a brand name. So we thought of going slow and working hard on it.”

In this album, the duo has come out with nine melodious numbers. Well-known lyricist Babu Singh Maan, Shiromani Kavishwar Karnail Singh and Paras have written these songs. The album is being released be T-series and the music is by Jaidev Kumar. “I have tried to give the real Punjabi flavour in this album while laying emphasis on Dhadi music. Satrangi Peengh will provide entertainment and at the same time make people think about various social issues.”

As for Gursewak, standing quietly next to his brother, this was a long-awaited project. “I have learnt a little from Harbhajan, I look up to him. This album is a collective effort to give music-lovers something fresh and neat,” shares Gursewak, who feels he had more time for riyaaz when he was young. “Now, I get time while I am travelling or driving, but I am never too far from music.” For Satrangi Peengh, it is Gursewak who is behind the instruments (he can play any Punjabi instrument) and Harbhajan has focused on singing.

Hero returns

The man who gave Punjabi cinema a new dimension returns to the silver screen with director Manmohan Singh after five years. Indeed a long time! If you thought, Harbhajan Mann was analysing Punjabi cinema all this while, this is what he says, “I haven’t watched Punjabi films for a long time, I really don’t know where it is going. I hear people talk about technical excellence in Punjabi cinema, but where is it? Till date nothing matches the technical excellence of Jee Aaya Nu. We took the films to the international market and it is still there,” he adds. So, what does Harbhajan comes up with after five years — an NRI issue! “People often relate me with NRI issues, but had it not been for this, we couldn’t have opened the market of Punjabi cinema,” adds Harbhajan.

The good old days

A walk down the memory lane and Harbhajan shares an emotional moment, “I remember when I sang Chithiye I received calls from guys who hadn’t called or been in touch with their mothers for long. The songs had depth; it remains etched in the memory forever.”

Life is fine: Kalki Koechlin
Kalki Koechlin says her marriage with Anurag Kashyap is just fine. She talks about how she deals with his temperament.

Understanding Anurag

I used to be temperamental but I got over it. Anurag is very emotional and gets hyper easily. If something upsets him, he starts venting on social networking sites. Now, I have decided that when he gets upset, there will be no venting or talking and we will just go for a drive or walk or cook together. I would like to change this quality about him. What I love about him is that he is unpretentious and has a great ability to laugh at himself.

All is well

I am not surprised at the rumours of a rift between us because of Huma Qureshi. This is how the industry functions. I genuinely like her because she is enthusiastic, lively and talented. Anurag appreciates that. We both go and hang out at her place and eat yummy food. We joke about these rumours. Both Anurag and I want to make our marriage work and it is important to us.

I am me

I do not need people to appreciate or criticize me too much because I enjoy the filming process. I like that people either hate me or love me for my unique personality and choices rather than everyone loving me for not having a personality at all! I am not a threat to anyone and I am not competitive.

Kajal to play a teacher

Kajal Aggarwal who is the only female with 26 men in her upcoming movie Special Chabbis is playing the role of a simple, sweet and docile school teacher. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles with Jimmy Shergill, Manoj Bajpai and Anupam Kher in supporting roles. The actress, who was earlier seen in Singham opposite Ajay Devgn, could not be more excited about it.

Speaking of her role, Kajal says, "It was a wonderful experience playing a teacher. I was always very notorious in my school and college days and I always gave my teachers a hard time. It was fun walking in their shoes for a bit, kudos to them! My role in Special Chabbis is quite contrary to how I am as a person so it was something different. Also, since the movie is set in the early 80's, I have worn a lot of simple Indian clothes. It was a great experience working with Akshay Kumar. I have been a huge fan of his and I learnt a lot too." Kajal was last seen as Boxer Nisha in Murugadoss's Thuppakki.

Sonakshi to go glam?

Item code: Sonakshi Sinha Sajid Khan, who has only three successful films to his credit, has roped in Ajay Devgn for his next flick, Himmatwala. The buzz is that Sonakshi Sinha has been signed in to do a special appearance for this film. She will be doing an item number for the song that will have her portray a look inspired from the 80s.

This must have been a great career move for Sonakshi as she has been dreadfully trying to get rid of the desi tag that has remained attached to her since her first appearance in films.

However, the blame cannot be wholly shifted from the actress as her choice of films has time and again only confirmed the tag.

Recently in the film Oh My God, Sonakshi and Prabhu Deva danced for an item song in which she was seen in not-so-classy western clothing. But her first venture to make a breakthrough into fashionable western clothing was noticed. For the introductory song in Himmatwala, the ambience will be that of disco era of the 80s with shiny dance floors, disco balls, lights and mirrors. It will have 100 dancers besides 400 extras. It is being touted that the look will draw inspirations from Parveen Babi’s jig in the song Jawaani Jaaneman from the film Namak Halal. An insider from the set of the film said, “Sajid has conceived of this lavish introductory song for which he wanted Sonakshi. She has a certain rustic image that she has been trying to break out of. Though she is proud of the roles she has done so far, this song seems like the perfect platform for her to attempt a makeover. Her costumes will be designed by Manish Malhotra."

The music has been composed by Sajid-Wajid who are riding high on the success of Dabangg 2. However, this particular song has been created by Sachin-Jigar. Sundhi Chauhan has rendered her powerful voice for the song. Chinni Prakash will be choreographing this it. Sajid Khan started his career as a DJ at a club in Mumbai in those times and thus is well-versed with the ambiances of that particular era. A source said, “The set is being construed in a city studio and will be called Funky Town." Sajid was contacted to confirm this news, to which he said “It's too early to talk about the song, but yes Sonakshi has been roped in."

Exciting movies of 2013
We bring you a list of movies we are excited about that will release in the next couple of months. There is such a variety in every way from stars to scripts to formula to directors.

Race 2

Abbas and Mustan are super-duper at making thrillers with unpredictable twists and turns in which no character can be trusted. Race 2 has it all--gorgeous babes like Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandez and hunks like Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham. We like the music and are thrilled about watching the rivalry unfold with fancier stunts on January 25.

Inkaar

Chitrangda Singh and Arjun Rampal look sizzling hot in the promos and the music is catchy too. The film deals with sexual politics in the corporate environment and looks promising. The Sudhir Mishra directorial venture releases on January 18.

Special Chhabbis

Neeraj Pandey made the splendid A Wednesday and now he is back with another thriller called Special 26 which is based on a jewellery store robbery in Mumbai that happened two decades ago. It stars Manoj Bajpai, Anupam Kher and Akshay Kumar.

David

Bejoy Nambiard made Shaitan and now he is back with a period-cum-contemporary movie called David. It stars Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vikram, Tabu and Lara Dutta and has an interesting premise about three different guys named David in three different eras.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola

No one makes a witty riotous film quite like Vishal Bhardwaj and this time he has assembled an interesting cast. Be prepared to be shocked and laugh your heart out. We know Anushka Sharma and Pankaj Kapur will be excellent and we hope Imran Khan matches up to them.

Imam: I am not a psycho

Troubled water: Imam Siddique
Troubled water: Imam Siddique

Bigg Boss Season 6 has been given the tagline Alag che and the serial is clearly living up to it. There are seven contestants in the house with the finale just round the corner. The melodrama of the contestants is therefore very intense.

On the New Year, Imam was kidnapped by the crew of Bigg Boss from the main house and put into a secret chamber, where he stayed for 24 hours. He got to see the live footage of the happenings inside the house. On his arrival into the house, he characteristically kept rambling against his housemates.

What makes this show even more different is that this time around reporters were allowed into the activity area of the house to ask questions directly to the contestants. Press conference has been an original addition to the show that had previously never ever appeared to have happened on Bigg Boss. This was sure to have shaken the contestants as the questions they were asked shed some light on how they had been portrayed outside.

Imam Siddique had to face the brunt of his eccentric behaviour inside the house. He was asked if he was a psycho, which he answered saying, “I am honest and humble human being. I am not a psycho... you can get my medical check-up done. Like everyone I also react spontaneously when I am angry...I lose temper."

Imam has been the most ill-tempered and non-compliant of all the contestants. He even triggered a war of words with the show’s host Salman Khan. When queried about that incident he said, "I did not have a tiff with him (Salman). I misbehaved with him. I have respect for Salman... I have known him for 25 years." He also added, "I don't think this is the right time to talk about that episode. I will talk about it when I will be out of the show."

Imam also made it evident that he was in the show to play a game, "I am here to play the game. If I win the show I will go to Haj. Then I will open a school in Rajasthan.”

It was not only Imam who was questioned but all the other contestants as well. Urvashi Dholakia was probed about the Bakhtiyar incident. Sana Khan and Rajeev Paul were also quizzed about their equation.

As the show is heading for its finale on January 12, it is only getting more interesting. — HRM
