The Indian ‘idiot box’ is bustling with a plethora of makeover serials. Cashing in on the wedding mania in India is the much-hyped Band Baaja Bride on NDTV Good Times. In its second season with anchor Ambika Anand and the ‘now less wooden’, former model, Bharat Arora, this programme charts the journey of a bride in distress and transforms her into err…the best she can look. From hair, skin to make-up to the dress, and even teeth, the would-be bride goes through a series of therapies, spa treatments and salon fixes! The final product is no less than a makeover victory! How affordable are the various makeover treatments and ‘fixes’ for an average woman on the street is of course a no-brainer! Be Blunt on TLC is a makeover saga hosted by the ace hairstylist duo of Adhuna Akhtar and her brother in crime Osh Bhabhani. They handpick young girls and colour, cut, style, and voila, a new you is born! The slickly packaged show features makeover hopefuls from metros, and therein lays the problem as this element keeps it aloof from the rest of India which is common to all such shows. Commenting on the charm of makeover shows, Adhuna and Osh say, "People like to take away ideas that can be used at home, and interpreted by them." TLC’s What not to Wear, India, the Indian version of the British serial of the same name. The show is hosted by Soha Ali Khan and designer Akki Narula. The participant’s entire wardrobe is at the mercy of the two anchors. No nips and tucks in this no-frills programme. Only some down-to-earth and personalised styling tips and cash card to shop with too! Elements of dressing up such as body shape, age, profession and personal apprehensions are looked into carefully. The suggestions are practical and the participant is encouraged to choose her own wardrobe according to the fashion do’s and don’ts. The end result is a more fashion aware and confident woman!
