Four arrested for thefts

Dera Bassi, January 5
The Lalru police has arrested four persons in separate theft cases. As per information from the police, Bilbar Khan and Manjeet Khan, both residents of nearby Dharmgarh village were arrested yesterday.

They were allegedly involved in stealing the spare parts of scooters and motorcycles from Lalru Mandi.

The police has also recovered the stolen material from the of arrested accused. Both of them have been booked under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC and police started investigation.

Meanwhile, in another case, the other two thieves were arrested for allegedly stealing cash from the Durga Mandir at Bhagwasi village. They had been identified as Surjeet, son of Rajpal and Jatinder Singh, son of Tarnjeet singh both residents of Toganpur village. They were booked under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC.

The police has also recovered cash from their possession, which was stolen by them from the Durga Mandir of Bhagwasi village two days ago. — OC

Dera Bassi, Zirakpur to be divided into zones

Dera Bassi, January 5
A meeting of the Property Tax Zoning Committee was held under the presidentship of Patiala local bodies Deputy Director Ashok Sikka at the Dera Bassi Municipal Council office on Friday in which officials and members from Zirakpur, Dera Bassi and Lalru municipal bodies took part.

Addressing the meeting, Sikka said that all the municipal bodies would be divided in to at least eight zones before levying property tax. Objections and suggestions about proposed zones would be sought after notification in this regard within a couple of days. After finalising zones, the rates for the property tax would be decided by the committee under the Deputy Commissioner.

He said these rates would be fixed, keeping in view, the collector rates and market rates. The zoning had taken place on basis of distance from highway, market, and populated area, developed and undeveloped colonies. The self-assessment for the year 2013-2014 would be done by the property owner itself.

He said that Punjab has become 19th state of the country to levy property tax. The tax would be evaluated at basic rate of collector rate, keeping in view, the usage of property, its type, structural factor, occupancy factor and age factor of the building to be taken from the date of completion certificate.

Among others who were present on the occasion included Municipal council president of Dera Bassi, Baljinder Kaur and vice-president Sheema Sharma, president of municipal council Zirakpur Kulwinder Sohi, Krishan Pal Sharma, EO Varinder Jain, EO SJ Sharma, EO Gurbakhshish Singh and EO Rajesh Sharma.

President's Medal for Khanyan Coop Society

Khanyan multi-purpose Agricultural Co-Operative Society Khanyan village in Fatehgarh Sahib district has been chosen by National Co-operative Development Corporation for President's Medal 2012 for its outstanding contribution to the field of co-operative movement in the area.

The society has over 897 members from four villages. They help the members in providing loans at cheaper rates for various agriculture and allied activities like diary, poultry, fishery, bee keeping etc. The society will get President's Medal, Rs 50,000 cash and a commendation certificate, said Yashvir Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner.

He said that there are 112 multi-purpose co-operative societies in the district, which are helping the farmers by providing loans at cheaper rates for purchasing tractors and other agriculture machinery. He said that the government is contributing 33 per cent as subsidy for the purchase of these implements.

He added that during the past five years, 25 branches of Co-Operative Banks have provided loans to the tune of Rs 46,650 crore to the farmers through 553 co-operative Societies. He said that six co-operative societies are operating diesel pumps and 23 more diesel pumps are being set up. He further said that the societies, who choose their members unanimously, are being given R 25000 as reward money. He said that during 2011-2012, 12,318 members have been insured for Rs 1.5 lakh each under the Bhai Kanhayia Scheme similarly under Mai Bhago Scheme 2059 lady members have been provided loans of Rs 4,73 crore.

Fresh warrants against HP MLA

Fresh arrest warrants have been issued against newly elected Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary and his accomplices in the Jyoti murder case. The four accused, Ram Kumar Chaudhary, Gurmeet, Dharampal and Paramjeet, are still absconding. The police are getting warrants secured but even after 49 days of the case, the accused have not been nabbed yet.

Harbhajan Chaudhary, brother of Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary, against whom a case under Section 216 (harbouring a criminal) of the IPC was registered by the Baddi police, has now been detained by the Panchkula police for interrogations. This was confirmed by S Arul Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP), Baddi. x

“The previous warrants had to be renewed today. We are still looking for them,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Virender Sangwan, the investigating officer of the case.

Meanwhile, the two brothers, Harbhajan and Madan Lal Chaudhary, against whom a case under Section 216 (harbouring a criminal) of the IPC has been registered are also absconding.

The Baddi police yesterday registered a case against the brothers after they came to know that the two were concealing facts about the whereabouts of Chaudhary.

“A case has been registered against the two because after interrogating them we are sure that they concealed facts and are well aware of Chaudhary’s whereabouts. Now both of them are absconding,” said S Arul Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP), Baddi.

It was on December 21 when the Panchkula police had reached the residence of MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary with the arrest warrants against the four accused. Though regularly raids are being conducted; the police is still not able to nab any one of the accused. While Gurmeet and Dharampal are the nephews of Chaudhary and Paramjeet is his friend.

Jyoti, 24, was found murdered near Sector 21, Panchkula, and it was after her call details and other proofs that the names of the accused were nominated in the FIR.

1 killed, 3 hurt in accidents

Chandigarh, January 5
The city witnessed three accidents in the past 24 hours that left one dead and three seriously injured, including a woman and a child.
A pedestrian was crushed by a speeding car at Sector 43-52 crossing on Saturday. According to the police, victim Fakir Singh (60), a resident of Mohali, was hit by a car driven by Jagir Singh, a resident of Sector 33. The police said Fakir Singh was crossing the road when the accident took place.

The victim was immediately rushed to the GMCH-32, where he succumbed to his injuries. A case was registered at the Sector 36 police station against the driver of the car. The accused was arrested and later released on bail. An inquiry has been initiated into the case.

In another accident reported from the Udyog Path in Sector 27, a woman and her son (10), were hit by a speeding vehicle while crossing the road dividing Sectors 30 and 27. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was bearing the registration number of Haryana. They said the woman and her son, residents of Sector 27, jumped in the air after being hit by the vehicle.

Anokh Singh, SHO of the Sector 26 police station, said the woman received injuries but was out of danger, while her son was rushed to the GMCH-32 where he was undergoing treatment.

In yet another accident reported on Friday evening, Ram Bahadur, a cyclist and a resident of Baltana in Zirakpur, was injured after he was allegedly hit by a Haryana Roadways bus driven by Rajesh near the Sector 17 ISBT roundabout. The cyclist got injured and was admitted to the PGI. The accused was arrested and later released on bail. A case was registered against him at the Sector 17 police station.

Man arrested with pistol, live cartridges

Chandigarh, January 5
The Crime Branch of the Chandigarh police arrested a person with a country-made pistol and two live cartridges.
The accused was produced in the court and sent to judicial custody.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Kulwinder Singh, a resident of Timberpur village, Fatehgarh Sahib district, was arrested near Sector 21 filling station.

Ranjodh Singh, inspector, Crime Branch, said though the pistol recovered from the accused seems like an imported one, it was country made.

A case under Sections 25-54-59 Arms Act has been registered at Sector 19 police station and an inquiry has been initiated into the matter.

Police officials said the source from where the accused procured the pistol and live cartridges was being investigated.

Two held for eve-teasing

Mohali, January 5
The local police claimed to have arrested two youths on a charge of eve-teasing the wife of the owner of a local hotel on December 27 here today.
The accused have been identified as Jagpreet Singh, alias Preet (24), a resident of Sector 48, Chandigarh, and Ravinder Singh, alias Ravi (21), from Bathinda.

The accused were involved in eve-teasing the wife of the owner of Hotel Majestic at Phase 9 on December 17 when the victim, along with her sister, was on her way back to home from Sector 9, Chandigarh.

The accused, who were in black Cruze car bearing registration number HR-26 1106, followed them to their home and made obscene gestures at them. A complaint was made by Harinderjit Singh, owner of Hotel Majestic, at Phase 8 Police Station in this regard, following which a case under Sections 294, 279, 427 of the IPC was registered against the duo. — TNS

Three juveniles caught for theft

The Chandigarh police caught three juveniles for stealing 40 pairs of shoes from a shop at Ramdarbar.
According to the police, Gulzar Singh, a resident of Phase I, Ramdarbar, reported that 40 pairs of shoes were stolen from his shop at Ramdarbar.

A case was registered under Sections 457, 380 of the IPC at Sector 31 police station.

Later on, three juveniles were arrested and Section 411 of the IPC was added to the case.

Jaspal Singh, SHO, Sector 31 police station, said the pairs of shoes were recovered from the house of juveniles.

“The juveniles had hidden the shoes at their home, and these were recovered after conducting a search,” Singh said. In the recent past, the Chandigarh police has come across many cases where juveniles were involved in stealing bags from wedding functions and even lifting laptops and bags after smashing windowpanes of cars.

The SHO said they had investigated the past of these juveniles, which had revealed that they were not involved in thefts incidents reported at wedding functions. All three minors were sent to a juvenile home. — TNS

Car driven by minor hits motorcyclist

A motorcyclist and occupants of a car, which was being driven by a minor, entered into an argument after the motorcyclist was hit by the car in Sector 22.
Eyewitnesses said the car hit the motorcyclist near House Number 2601, Sector 22, following which the motorcyclist, identified as Sahil, fell on the front windshield of the car before felling on the road.

The occupants of the car managed to flee from the spot. However, they couldn’t go further as a tyre of the vehicle got busted.

“The motorcyclist chased the car, which was parked not far away,” said residents of Sector 22.

The eyewitness said the motorcyclist and the occupants of the car entered into an argument, which led to a scuffle during which the rear window of the car was also damaged.

Police officials said the car, which was being driven by the minor, has been impounded.

Sahil was booked under preventive Sections 107/151, CrPc, they added.

In another match, Rahul Seth overcame Denys Baranevich of Ukraine. In the matches of girls’ category, Nandini Sharma of the CLTA upset eight seed Nikita N Bishnoi by 7-5 and 6-2 during the tennis tournament.

City tennis coach to attend conference in Oz

Birbal Wadhera, chief coach of the Chandigarh Club Tennis Club Academy (CCTA), will attend the 6th Annual Australian Grand Slam Coaches' Conference at Hisense Arena Melbourne Park, Australia, from January 10 to 13.

Birbal has also attended the United States Professional Tennis Association World Coaches’ Conference held at La Quinta, California last year.
