Miscellany Everywhere, everywhere (Lyrics by Chris Brown)
AH! the beautiful people. Wherever we go, whatever we do, they dominate our lives like no one else does. They make news in life and in death, in sickness and in health, in the best of their designer attires. No prizes for guessing that the woman who hogged the media limelight was no less than royalty. Caught off guard while vacationing at a private château in France, Kate Middleton’s nude sunbathing cost her dear and earned her some embarrassing moments. Before the royal couple could recover and initiate legal action, the pictures were all over the French magazine Closer. Kate was suitably enraged even though composed. Perhaps she needs to learn a lesson from our very own Safeena. Chotte Nawab Saif Ali Khan’s much-awaited wedding with the gorgeous Kareena Kapoor was kept out of bounds for the paparazzi. Not that it stopped them from reporting the details of what Kareena wore right from her mother-in-law’s sharara to a Manish Malhotra garara. Then, the guest list, who came to the wedding, and more significantly, who didn’t, created as much buzz. While privacy became the byword for the Saifeena wedding, Vidya Balan’s wedding, too, was a low-key affair. Our desi girl Sherlyn Chopra gave another meaning to private lives. So there she was as God made her. As she tweeted to the whole world how she had made it to the cover of Playboy, she earned the (in) famous distinction of being the first Indian to do so. Interestingly, while the Playboy cover of hers is yet to hit the magazine stands, her dare bare act rolled on. Her half nude pictures graced the trailer of Kamasutra, a movie being made by Rupesh Paul. Amid the strip queens (in case, you have forgotten Poonam Pandey and her no bra act for breast cancer awareness), however, the hackles of the moral brigade of India were raised by something quite innocuous. Among others who ruled the popularity charts were Priyanka Chopra. No, not just because she cut her single In My City. But PC became the world’s sexiest Asian woman, according to an online survey. Birth of celebrity babies in India was duly noticed and registered but none of it could match the hysteria that surrounded the birth of little baby Bachchan last year. Aradhya Bachchan turned one this year, her grandfather Big B 70 and Indian cinema is all set to celebrate its 100th birthday next year. Hearts melted too, tears welled up as some beautiful people bid adieu forever. Once a superstar, always one so proved Rajesh Khanna, who left for the heavenly abode ensconced in a glass casket bedecked with flowers. Lest the world forgot he was a ladies’man, first and foremost his ‘live-in partner’ Anita Advani got up and reminded the world. That she contested his will is an ugly technical matter for the courts to settle. Meanwhile, Katie Holmes split with Tom Cruise over issues of parenting their daughter Suri and religion called scientology. But closer home, the parting gift from our King of romance, Yash Chopra was — love like there is no tomorrow and love till Jab Tak Hai Jaan. He taught many generations of moviegoers the real meaning of love with his timeless movies. Time doesn’t stand still for beautiful people but that doesn’t stop us from being their time keepers. So in the New Year, too, we will be keeping a close watch on the star world.
