Beneath the crust
If you thought pizza is all about selection of crust and toppings, think again. With more varieties, ordering a pizza at your favourite joint has become a complex affair
Jasmine Singh

There are inventions that we are eternally grateful for; a long list comes to mind — beer, warm water shower, jacuzzi, microwave…and finally pizzas. Ah there! Focus on pizzas. Now, this is something every 'tarian' — veg, non-veg, eggi and non-eggi — will vote for!

From basic thin crust to 'as-you-like-it' toppings, pizzas in the Chandigarh have baked themselves in a new avatar. More varieties, more forms and more trendy names, the instant fast food pizza has definitely come of the crust! To support this, a message flashing on mobile reads - the perfect lover is the one who turns into a pizza at 4.00 am. Howzzat!

Base line

With its origins in Italy, pizza is a dish that is popular across the continents. Interestingly, it was only in 1889 that cheese was added to it. Jyoti Singh, founder director of newly-opened Pizzamore in Sector-22, Chandigarh, has stayed in Italy for many years. He returns to the city with the authentic pizza tastes. "I have never seen a chicken tikka pizza in Italy and here people ask only for that," he laughs.

According to this hotelier, pizzas have always been fine-tuned to suit the tastes of people of a particular place. "It is not the toppings that make the difference, it is the crust and the base that does the trick," he adds. Pizzamore uses natural yeast for the preparation of the base. "Our chef comes from a family of finest bakers in Italy. We don't use chemical yeast because we believe if the base is simple and easy to digest, a pizza has finally served its purpose." Tentino mozzarella cheese and potato, Farms village (Contadina), Norma (Ricotta cheese, egg plant tomato), Genovese tomato fresh green sauce with basilcom are some of options to look out for.

Local twist

From a normal margarita to cheese capsicum to something more fancy like chicken (Wustel) that uses buffalo mozzarella, cheese and tomato peeled, Maialona served with tomato fresh mozzarella cheese, mushroom jalpon, egg and chicken sauces to an Allacipolla (onion treat) using mozzarella cheese, tomato peeled and onion, a variety of pizzas exist now. At New York Pizza and Fried Chicken (NYPFC), Sector-36, Chandigarh, all the favourites have been blended together creating some interesting toppings. "We have the regular pizzas as well, but at NYPFC the idea is to give something different. We have blended Thai and Punjabi tastes in pizzas," he says.

Chicken Keema, Murg Tikka,Murg Makhani, Veg Manchuriam and Tandoori Paneer are some of the hot selling pizzas at this place. "Pizzas have definitely changed as per the tastes. The basics remains the same, it is the toppings and ingredients that add to the difference."

Top shot

Mushrooms, olives, pepperoni, onions…design your pizzas the way you like them. However, at Flamme Bois Bistro, owner Karan Deep Singh Suri likes to offer not more than three basic ingredients. "To taste good, pizzas should be simple and cooked at the right temperature. As they are hand-rolled, each pizza made here has a distinct exotic taste." There are myriad toppings and styles of making them, but it is the home-made simple style that makes Flamme Bois Bistro pioneers in this original mouth-watering treat.

Many an act
Dolly Ahluwalia is a known name in the film world. Not only did the role in Vicky Donor stand out, the costumes designed by her are quite a rage…
Manpriya Singh

Dolly Ahluwalia
perfect cut: Dolly Ahluwalia

There is an altogether different approach to the script and a singular thought process towards the characters. It's not easy catching hold of Dolly Ahluwalia's imagination, for the iconic costume designer gets into the skin of her characters, smells, senses and relates to them before starting from the usual point of sketching!

Flashback to Langda Tyagi in Omkara and she pictured a chameleon, one that changes colours, someone who smells of liquor and dust. That's how the browns in the costumes and consequently the awards stepped in. "I read, re-read and re-read. Don't make points immediately but imagine the basic colours that first come to my mind. I then relate my characters to animals, objects and smells," The character artiste from Vicky Donor, Yahaan and Ek Noor, while inaugurating a DVD festival at the British Library in Chandigarh, speaks of what goes behind the mind of a costume designer.

Then there's the 'most looked forward to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. "While designing for the character of Milkha Singh, I thought of a horse; a majestic loyal fighter. His legs were the most important part." There is an endeavour to keep things 80 per cent authentic while taking imaginative liberties. "We had to go back to the 1960s, the era of circuit races, while at the same time we had to ensure that every sportsperson of today related to Milkha's journey." She adds, "I cherished meeting and working with Farhan. Even in stadiums with 48 degree centigrade temperature, he stood like a lion and literally did 400 metres as well as 200 metres himself."

Costume drama

Be it acting or dressing up her characters, a couple of things remain a constant. "I make it a conscious endeavour not to repeat myself. When it comes to taking up films, I look for challenges." Like the one she found in Deepa Mehta's Midnight's Children. "I am doing costumes for the entire cast and we did as many as 3,000 that too while trying to create an India in Sri Lanka." The project took two months of research, apart from other things. If there's a lot going on in her mind, there's a whole lot more going on otherwise.

"There are three foreign films under negotiation apart from Shashank Shah's Band Bajaa Denge, where I play Tusshar Kapoor's mother. It's a very important role." Then there's the role of a grandmother in Saadi Love Story starring Surveen Chawla. For the uninitiated, she's also behind Surveen's look in the movie, while not subscribing to Punjabi cinema's clichés. "There is a touch of realism missing from the Punjabi film industry. It borders on the clichés, but it's improving."

In the ever-clashing dates and rush of schedules, she missed designing for? "Bullet Raja."

"I enjoy doing period dramas way more than contemporary stuff." But lately it's been garnering praises through the role of an uninhibited mother in Vicky Donor. She laughs, "They asked us to abuse to our heart's content." Nevertheless, she'd rather have her "audience know her through her costumes." We guess they know her anyway!

CELEB POINT
Fight for justice
Divya Dutta

Read this gruesome news about the rape of a 23-year-old Delhi girl, who was leading the life of a normal girl her age. A physiotherapist student looking forward to watching a nice film in the evening! Little did she know that her normal life was going to change after that! Inspite of being with a male friend, she was raped by six people and was brutally thrown out of the bus! Someone’s little child, someone’s sister, very protected, who learnt the good values in life and believed in the goodness in life, treated like a tissue paper, used crumpled, thrown...They just ended someone’s normal life in a few minutes. In their quest for power abuse and sex. The girl fights for her life in the hospital. They killed her dreams, her aspirations, her future for a few minute’s of sadistic pleasure. And a family is scarred for life. India stands in unison on this case, for the guilty to be punished and punished now and prayers for the lovely innocent girl, who fights for her life...of whatever those monsters have left of it.

I am flooded with calls by channels to speak as I faced a mob hysteria myself a few days back at an event!

The mob broke the security barrier for pictures, and I found myself suffocated by men all around. Someone trying to feel me or pinch me, till my inner strength got me to slap 3-4 guys before the security got back to action and I was safe in my car! But I had security. Most of the gals don't. So can these sex-starved maniacs who show their male power and pervertish behaviour are let off free just by slapping a case on them. I think these Delhi perverts need to meet the capital punishment to set an example for those who don't think that their action just ruined someone’s smiles, a normal happy life! We need to set an example now and I urge everyone to not just sit there and read the headlines. Be an integral part. Bring in this change. We can and we should!

The Fevicol Se song of Dabangg 2 is being received as enthusiastically by Bollywood music loyalists as Munni was received two years back. Lyrics, choreography, actors—Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor—the song has got all the elements to make it one of the most popular item numbers of Bollywood films. Rest, music fans tell us what they like or dislike about the song.

Love at first sight

I loved the song the very first time I heard it when it was released on Bigg Boss. Music, lyrics and choreography of the song have already made it a hit. Mamta Sharma has done great work as a playback singer like she did with Munni Badnaam Hui. The song has got some witty lyrics. I like the title of the song, which is so offbeat and new.

Salil Goel, a PU student

Better than the rest

The song has already become the talk of the town. Salman is good but it is Kareena who steals the show with her dance and expressions. She makes this song even better than Munni Badnaam Hui. Music directors, Sajid-Wajid have proved why the makers of the film picked them once again for the song. Fevicol Se is one of the best item numbers of the year, any day better than Halkat Jawani and the likes.

Rasleen Duggal, a class XII student

Spicy lyrics

What makes Fevicol Se a hit is the amusing lyrics of the song. It has been shot and choreographed well. It proves why Farah Khan is still the most popular choreographer in the industry even after new people have entered the industry. Salman Khan is looking funny and handsome at the same time. Surprisingly he has danced well in the song and Kareena has, as always, done a great job with her dancing abilities. But the trophy for the hit should go to Mamta Sharma, the singer, who has once again done a great job.

Ode to kabaddi

Hong Kong-based upcoming Punjabi singer Param D has struck again with his latest single, Kabaddi.

Paramdeep Singh Sran AKA Param D considers this song as an ode to the iconic sport. Kabaddi is released by Indya Records. The song is being aired on most Punjabi channels. The music is produced by Sahib Sekhon and lyrics are by Roop Jagraon and Param D. Expressing his journey as a singer, Param D said, "I started writing poetry and Punjabi songs at the age of 18, while studying in Hong Kong. My interest in singing started with love for Punjabi culture and language. I used to make compositions of my songs and started singing them to my friends and at family functions. I'm greatly influenced by Gurdas Maan. I have been a great fan of him. My other favourite singers include Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Jazzy B, Babbu Mann and Surjit Bindrakhia.”

Ashima Batish

Their creations sell overseas as much as they do in India. Fashion designer duo, Jai & Parvesh have never shied away from competing with the international names at international fashion weeks. As a result, they always have the latest update on fashion in India and abroad. Here they share their knowledge of what's in and out this season.

What's in: Fusion of ethnic wear, anarkali suits and Western capes are sought-after this winter. Any outfit that has length will work well this season but again it shouldn't be body hugging. The fabric should be flowy to add volume to the outfit. Team up a cape with a flowing skirt made of at least 15 meters of fabric. Embroidery shouldn't define an outfit, keep it limited to specific areas, like neck or the sleeves.

What's out: Intricate work done all over the dress is just not in. That makes one look like a chandelier. Short or knee-length dresses are out. Anything that defines the shape of the body should be done away with at least for a next few months.

Colour count: People automatically switch to darker colours in winter and the preferred ones are carrot, electric blue and emerald green. Blue, black and brown are other obvious choices.

Party couture: It's winter, so no short dresses please. There are ample options for the colder months also. Pick a plazzo pant that has really wide bottoms, volume is must. Take a cue from the plazzos of 60s and 70s. Pair it up with monkey jackets in any metallic colour, which are shorter than the usual jackets. Opt for the punk look rather than the usual fairy tale look.

Dressed to the nines: Priyanka Chopra has got some style, be it sarees or westerns, the actress knows how to make head turns with her impeccable dressing sense. Vidya Balan has remarkably improved and the credit goes to her designer, Sabyasachi. In Hollywood, Angelina Jolie never has gone wrong with her style.

Leading from the front: I admire the eccentric designs of John Galliano and works by Hussein Chalayan.

On the Indian fashion industry: The next five years will be the real test for the industry. With the coming of FDI, international fashion designers and big brands will compete with the Indian fashion designers. We will have to strike a balance between pricing and designing. We can't afford to compromise with the quality of what we produce at the same time.

En-TRENCH-ed fashion
Classic or military style, trench coats sure make a big style statement this winter season…
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Albeit the range of coats for women is wide this winter, we focus on the main trend of the season — the trench coat. Although this garment, part of the military dress, is traditionally double-breasted with ten front buttons, wide lapels, belt at the waist and shoulder straps in classic khaki colour, off-late they have become much more trendy.

Among the most alluring trends, this dandy style requires careful research on elegance and perfection. Be it a fitted silhouette, double-breasted style or the textured wool, this coat can be made in either classical or military style. While you can look for leather details, rich colours, patent finishes and quilted textures for a twist in the classical style of trench coat, this season is all about above-the-knee or mid-thigh styles.

"Although styles vary, the length of trench coat makes it stylish; it is middle of the knee and midi that is working well. And for women who are ready to show their slender figure, the mini-trench coats are the most appropriate," says Geet Sethi, consultant head, Espirit, North India.

Well, when talking of this popular trend it is worthwhile to know that the brand Burberry has made trench coats famous. And it is the coat with no fasteners and some with hidden fasteners that are popular. "The quilted look is very much in vogue in trench coats. Fur and leather are also in, but both as trimming. The most popular are the smooth skin, light-long fur, large block inserts or the collar, cuffs and hem," says an employee of Wills, Sector-17, Chandigarh.

While it's the mix of retro and military trends that have made the trench coats popular, black, white, camel and beige are the most popular colours.

Coat of arms

A trench coat or 'trenchcoat' is a stylised form of a raincoat that generally has a removable insulated lining, raglan sleeves; the classic versions come in various lengths ranging from mid-calf to above the knee.
Trench coat was originally a military item of clothing and shows this influence in its styling.
The trench coat was developed as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats worn by British and French soldiers during the First World War.
Invention of the trench coat is claimed by both Burberry and Aquascutum, with Aquascutum's claim dating back to the 1850s. Thomas Burberry, the inventor of gabardine fabric, submitted a design for an army officer's raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office in 1901.

During the winter season the one thing that our skin requires the most is a perfect moisturiser. Moisturisers prevent and treat dry skin, but that's not all they do. Moisturisers protect sensitive skin, improve skin tone and texture, and mask imperfections.

There are plenty of different moisturisers available in the market. Like searching for a good cleanser, it can be difficult finding the perfect moisturiser for the skin. Even if a particular moisturiser doesn't break you out, some moisturisers feel too greasy and heavy or are simply not moisturising enough.

Which moisturiser is best for you?

On the most basic level, moisturisers hold water in the outermost layer of skin. They also act as a temporary barrier against allergens and harmful environmental agents. Many moisturisers contain some combination of humectants and emollients, as well as other ingredients.

The moisturiser that's best for you depends on many factors, including the skin type, the age and whether you have specific conditions, such as acne.

Normal skin: Normal skin is neither too dry nor too oily. To maintain this natural moisture balance, one should use a water-based moisturiser that has a light, non-greasy feel. These moisturisers often contain lightweight oils, such as cetyl alcohol, or silicone-derived ingredients, such as cyclomethicone.

Dry skin: To restore moisture to dry skin, need is of a heavier, oil-based moisturiser that contains ingredients such as anti-oxidants, grape seed oil or dimethicone, which helps keep skin hydrated 24 hours. For very dry, cracked skin, petrolatum-based products are preferable. They have more staying power than creams and are more effective at preventing water from evaporating from our skin.

Oily skin: Oily skin is prone to acne and breakouts. Though oily, such skin still needs moisture, especially after using skin care products that remove oils and dry out the skin. A light moisturiser also protects the skin after washing. Choose a water-based product that's labelled "non-comedogenic," which means it won't clog pores.

Sensitive skin: Sensitive skin is susceptible to skin irritations, redness, itching or rashes. Look for a moisturiser that contains soothing ingredients such as chamomile or aloe and doesn't contain potential allergens, such as fragrances or dyes. Also, avoid products containing acids such as lactic or glycolic acids, which can irritate sensitive skin.

Mature skin: As you age, the skin tends to become drier because the oil-producing glands become less active. To keep the skin soft and well hydrated, choose an oil-based moisturiser that contains petrolatum as the base, along with antioxidants or alpha hydroxy acids to combat wrinkles. These ingredients help hold in moisture and prevent flaky and scaly skin. Such moisturizers keep the skin hydrated and supple. They lock in the skin's natural moisture, as well as help attract moisture to the surface of the skin to prevent it from drying out. They also improve the skin barrier function. Most moisturisers include fragrance to make the product smell more appealing. Those with sensitive skin should use moisturizers with no fragrance and minimal ingredients. Those with sensitive skin should also avoid the perfume ingredient as well.

The other thing to consider when choosing a good moisturiser is the texture and feel of the moisturiser itself. One should select and pick one that hydrates but won't feel heavy and greasy. The ideal moisturiser is smooth and easy to apply and sinks into the skin instead of sitting on the surface. Fluid moisturisers (like lotions and serums) tend to sink right in. A good moisturiser should also not break you out, burn upon touching the skin, or cause any other kind of irritation. Most important it's better to have a moisturiser which has PH equivalent to that of skin that is 5.8.

Things that Kareena likes

Kareena Kapoor's secrets and confessions and style tips are out in Confessions of A Bollywood Style Diva written by Shobhaa De. She also talks about relationships in her trademark blunt style.

Inner secret

I love lacy lingerie and it is great to spice things up in the bedroom. Women need to learn how to have fun in the bedroom and lingerie plays a big role in that. I love lacy stuff in pastel colours which is sexy and cute. I love lavender and sometimes I go crazy buying lingerie.

Foot-loose

I had once said that a woman who pays more attention to her shoes is classier than a woman who pays more attention to her bags! Finished! World War 3 began! What I meant was that the right shoes or heels do more for your personality and appearance than a bag because they change your posture and can make or break an outfit. Your feelings change depending on the shoes you are wearing. Bags are important but it is something you carry and you have an option to go without a bag but you have to wear shoes!

Memorable TashanKareena Kapoor

I know Tashan was a flop but it gave me some really memorable moments along with Saif Ali Khan. I knew him socially but we never talked. We connected on the sets of Tashan and I knew that he had been checking me out and flirting with me because he remembered the colour of my car! He would make me laugh and we would go shopping together in Ladakh and that is how we got to know each other. Slowly, word of relationship spread and everyone knew about it. And my size zero figure became a national obsession and losing that kind of weight was a big deal for me.

Spacing out

Saif and I go for holidays together every year but there are times when we go for holidays without each other. We both give each other space. Like he went for a trip with his buddies after Agent Vinod and I did not go because I understood he needed that solo time and I also go away for a few days every now and then with my family and friends, without him. We never talk about the movies we are doing unless one of us wants advice.

Body beautiful

Rujuta Diwekar is my nutritionist and Payal Gidwani is my yoga trainer and they both have changed my life. They have changed my outlook towards exercise and eating and with their help I can get in whichever shape I want to. I remember Saif and Rajkumar Hirani asked me to gain weight during 3 Idiots to look normal and healthy and I did that because their opinion matters to me and I no longer had to stay thin for a movie role. I like being healthy and curvy.

The track has been rendered by Clinton Cerejo and written by Gulzar saab." Adds the source, "Emraan and Huma are expected to lip-lock in the track."

"Vishal understands the nuances of his composition better than anyone else so it will be great to have him choreograph this song," confirms Kannan Iyer.
