Mock drill

A mock drill has tremendous importance. It is an orchestrated practice of our response to a natural calamity or a manmade disaster. Every other day you hear of mock drills for fire breakouts. The Delhi Metro has had a mock drill for an earthquake alarm.

A common man should also be taking part in these mock drills. An office, where corruption is openly and blatantly practised, should organise a mock drill on how to make the entire thing disappear if the CBI or vigilance suddenly swoop. Schools, colleges should also have these exercises in how to make disappear those examination halls parchis when the authorities make a surprise check to check copying. Students could be given mock drills on how to swallow those parchis in times of emergency.

Sweet makers or halwais should also have such a practice two or three times in a year so that during Diwali time when the Food Inspectors come, the halwai is ready for them with a ‘sweet’ smile.

Recently, there was a commotion in the neighbourhood. Voices were raised and abuses were in plenty. The neighbours gathered and knocked at the house. “What’s the matter Mohanlalji?” “Our son if quarrelling with his wife” “But your son is getting married next month.” Mohanlal said, “Yes, the wedding is next month. We are just having a mock drill of what will follow after the marriage!”
