Air Force to organise training camp

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 26
The Indian Air Force is to organise a training camp in Government Girls High School, Bassi Pathana, from November 1, to encourage youth to join defence forces. Deputy Commissioner Yashvir Mahajan said the training camps would help the youth, especially the girls, to seek employment in the defence forces.

Mahajan said mass counselling programmes would be held in various schools and colleges from October 31 to help the students select job-oriented training programmes. He said the programme would be organised by District Bureau of Employment Generation and Training in association with District Education Office. He said during the mass counselling, the students, who have cleared Class XII exams, would be able to get the information in detail from various experts.

The deputy commissioner said those students who have left studies after clearing the Class XII exams would also be included in the mass counselling programmes. He said this would help them to start their own venture after getting training from the experts.

Experts dwell on importance of music in life

Khalsa College, Patiala, organised an UGC-sponsored national conference on “Role and Relevance of Music for Healthy Life” on the college campus today. Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar, former president of SGPC, Amritsar, in his inaugural address said due to materialistic pursuits, man has lost the capacity to inculcate melodious music in his life.

He cited examples from Shakespeare's plays to elucidate the role of music in our lives.

Renowned singer Sardool Sikander said, “Music is the food for soul.”

Dr Gurnam Singh, head of Department of Music, Punjabi University, Patiala, who has taken ragas to the pinnacle of glory, congratulated the principal and organisers of the college for arranging such a unique and distinct conference.

Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, vice-chancellor, Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib; Dr Rajpal Singh, head Punjab Sahit Academcy, Chandigarh; Dr Jaswant Singh, former reader, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. took part in the conference.

3 drug peddlers held

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 26
The district police has arrested three drug peddlers, including a woman and her son, during a checking at different places and seized 25 kg of poppy husk from them.

SSP HS Mann said CIA Staff Sirhind during patrolling near Bhamarsi village suspected a woman and a youth. The police seized 10 kg of poppy husk from their possession.

The accused were identified as Nachatro, alias Chatro, a resident of Rohti Chana in Patiala, and her son Kala. The SSP said they used to supply narcotics and drugs to addicts in the area.

Similarly, Anti-Narcotic cell, Fatehgarh Sahib, during a naka arrested Sandeep Mohar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, and seized 15 kg of poppy husk from him.

All the accused were booked under the NDPS Act and produced in the court. They were sent to 14-day judicial custody.

SSP said the campaign launched by the district police against drug peddler and anti-social elements is in full swing and many drug peddlers have been arrested.

42-yr-old dies in road mishap

Kalka, October 26
In a hit-and-run case, a 42-year-old Chandigarh resident was crushed to death here today.

The police said the incident took place around 9:45 am near Mallah Road roundabout, NH-22, Pinjore. Vijay Kumar, a resident of Sector-24, Chandigarh, was riding on his motorbike when some unidentified vehicle hit his motorbike. Kumar died on the spot.

The body was handed over to the relatives after conducting autopsy at Community Health Centre, Kalka. – OC

ETO's suicide: Court summons accused

Mohali, October 26
The court today issued summons to five accused in the suicide case of Excise and Taxation Officer Ranjit Singh.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge RS Rai directed the accused, SP (Vigilance) Amandeep Kaur, head constable Harminder Singh, Rajinder Singh, Rajiv Sood and Paramjit Singh, to appear in court on the next date of hearing on November 26.

The Mohali police has already presented the challan in the court. The police, which had formed a special investigation team in the case, has failed to nab the accused.

ETO Ranjit Singh was arrested by a vigilance team headed by Amandeep Kaur on March 29 last year after he was allegedly caught taking a bribe to release the goods of a trader. He was released on bail by a court on April 20. Three days later, he allegedly committed suicide at his Phase II residence. Manjeet Kaur, wife of the deceased, had filed a petition in the court stating that her husband was implicated in a false case which compelled him to commit suicide.

Jail warder gets 2-year term

The CBI Special Court of Vimal Kumar today sentenced a jail warder to two years imprisonment in a corruption case.

The court sentenced, Satish Kumar, warden of Burail Model Jail, to two years imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him. He was convicted yesterday under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI had arrested the warder in May 2009 on charges of accepting bribe from a kin of an inmate on the promise of providing the inmate with “better facilities” in the prison. Satish was caught red-handed from his residence in Kajheri village when he was taking Rs 5,000 from a cousin of Jaswinder Singh, alias Rocky, who was at that time in the jail in connection with the murder of Uttar Pradesh-based gangster Prabhjinder Singh Dimpy.

He was arrested on a complaint made by Jasbir Singh, Rocky’s cousin, alleging that the warder had demanded money from him.

Thieves strike at Monica Goyal’s residence
During search, blood stained clothes recovered from washing machine

Thieves ransacked the Sector 21 residence belonging to Monica
Goyal, the teacher who allegedly committed suicide last week, the police said. The thieves apparently knew that the house owners were in jail. As the police conducted a search of the house after the theft was reported, blood stained undergarments of Monica were recovered from the washing machine, further deepening the mystery behind her death.

Monica Goyal was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her residence on October 15. The police had arrested her husband Vikas, brother-in-law Vishal, father-in-law GP Goyal and mother-in-law Prem Lata Goyal in the case of abetment to suicide and destruction of evidence as her in-laws had washed a blood stained bedsheet after her death. All four of them are currently lodged in Burial Jail. Monica’s family members have alleged that she was murdered by her in-laws.

The theft incident occurred at around 3am and when the thieves broke into the house with only the servant residing in the room inside the garage. They fled with cash and jewellery.

According to the police, the thieves took advantage of the fact that the house owners were in jail. The domestic help, Raghu, spotted the thieves as he woke up on hearing noise emanating from inside the house. Raghu raised an alarm and the accused fled the spot. Raghu managed to catch hold of one of the theives, but they managed to escape from his clutches.

After getting the information, the police reached the spot with a dog squad. The Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL) team also visited the spot and took samples for examination.

The thieves broke open all cupboards and ransacked the house before leaving. According to the father of the victim, Monica had 15 grams of gold ornaments that were missing.

A police official said that so far they had no evidence to ascertain that Monica was murdered by her in-laws but investigations were on.

Man hit by vehicle, dies

Panchkula, October 26
In a tragic incident, the head of a 42-year-old man was severed after his motorcycle was hit by an unknown vehicle this morning near Mallah road, Pinjore.

The victim, Vijay Singh, was on his way to Pinjore to deliver some medicines when the incident took place. The driver of the unknown vehicle fled the spot.

Vijay, a resident of Chandigarh, was rushed to General Hospital, Sector 6, in Panchkula, where he was declared brought dead.

Investigating officer (IO) Ram Karan said: “The incident took place this morning when Vijay was going towards Pinjore and when he reached near Mallah road, an unknown vehicle hit his motorcycle from behind. The hit was so powerful that Vijay came under the vehicle and his head was severed,” said.

When the passersby saw Vijay lying on the road they informed the police.

A case has been registered at the Pinjore police station.

Pooja murder case
Charges framed against accused

The two accused in the Pooja murder case were charged with murder at a local court today. The court framed charges under Section 302 of the IPC against Vajinder and Renu for the brutal murder of Pooja, who was Vajinder’s wife.

Vajinder was employed with a fastfood joint in the city and he murdered his wife in connivance with his paramour and then dumped her body in bushes in a deserted area in Hoshiarpur on July 13. The couple set the woman’s body afire before she was dumped. She was given a heavy dose of sedative and was strangulated thrice while on the way from Chandigarh to Hoshiarpur in the car. Renu originally hails from Hoshiarpur. The police said Vajnder got married to Pooja in 2008 and it was a love marriage. Relations between the couple turned sour and they used to fight often. Vajinder had an affair with Renu, whom he met while they were working together at Dominos in Jalandhar, two years ago. Vajinder was forcing Pooja to divorce him so that he could marry Renu, but Pooja refused to divorce.

Himachal beat Punjab by 7 wickets

Himachal registered a seven-wicket win over Punjab in a match held during the Vinoo Mankad Tournament at PCA Stadium, Mohali, today. Punjab, after winning the toss, opted to bat first. The Punjab team was bundled out at 232 in 49.4 overs. Jaskaranveer Sigh of Punjab scored 67 off 75 balls, including 8 boundaries and one six, whereas Bhupinder Singh scored 40 off 46 balls, studded with 2 fours and 2 sixes.

However, other batsmen could not manage to score much. Himachal’s Arjun Sharma, 3 wickets for 61, and Akash Bashisht, 2 for 53, did most of the damage.

Himachal started the run chase with an opening partnership of 69 runs off 12.3 overs. Ankush Dhariwal scored 36 and P Khandoori put up 70 runs. Khandoori was then joined by Nakul Sharma to stitch another partnership of 74 runs for the second wicket before Khandoori was trapped in front by Karan Kaila. He for 70 off 79 balls, studded with 6 boundaries.

Nakul Sharma found an able partner in Ankit Kalsi and the two added 60 more runs for the 3rd wicket taking the team’s total to 203 for 3 in 41.3 overs. Nakul Sharma scored 71 off 90 balls, including 6 boundaries. For Punjab, Karan Kaila claimed 2 for 39. He was the most successful bowler.

Himachal got 4 points for this win while Punjab got zero.

Now, Delhi will take on JKCA at PCA Stadium on October 28, while Himachal will take on Haryana at GMSSS, Sector 26, on the same day.

Avyay Nambiar declared best athlete

St John's High School celebrated its Annual Sports Extravaganza for its junior section on the school campus here today.

The sports day was dedicated to the "Celebration of childhood”. VK Singh, IAS, finance-cum-education secretary, was the chief guest on the occasion. The day started with the unfurling of the school flag, followed by the school anthem and the sports anthem sung by the school boys. Singh encouraged the boys to participate actively in sports for all-round development. The junior school boys displayed their karate skills.

The best athletes were Avyay Nambiar, for under-8category, Savneet Singh, for under-10 category, and Ravneet Singh, for under-12 category. Principal Kavita C Das gave a vote of thanks to the guests, parents and students.

Tennis tournament from October 29

Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) is to organise AITA-Chandigarh Open Tennis Tournament from October 29.

The tournament will continue till November 2.

The qualifying matches will be played on October 27 and 28 at CLTA Complex from 9.00 am onwards. Players from different states have come to participate in the tournament. So far 110 players have signed-in for the qualifying event. Out of which 95 are men and 15 are women.

Wild card entrants are also selected. Men’s wild card entrants include Allan Gomes, Pranav Suri, Ranjeet Singh, Digvijay Singh Naruka and women’s include Saumya Saxena, Bhavya Wadhawan, Harsimran Kaur and Sanjam Preet Kaur.
