Farmers block highway

Dera Bassi, October 24
Farmers of Lalru area today blocked the traffic on national highway to protest against non-purchasing of paddy crop on time by government purchasing agencies.

They alleged that officials of FCI purchasing agency were harassing the farmers and not purchasing their crop. The farmers raised slogans against Punjab government. Some farmers even alleged that they have been waiting for their turn for last one week.

Jasmer Singh, Jaswinder Singh Tiwana, Gurnam Singh, Raunki Ram and Gurmail Singh said they have been waiting for their turn but the officials of FCI agency were not purchasing crop. They said the agencies were asking for more quantity of moisture than the fixed 17 point.

Farmers have demanded for proper arrangements of purchasing of paddy crop. Meanwhile, officials of market committee, Lalru, said nearly one lakh quintal of paddy was brought for purchasing by farmers till now.

Man commits suicide

Kalka, October 24
A man committed suicide after an argument with his wife. The police said Sunil (38) of Shahpur village here, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan.

He told his mother that he was going to sleep but he hanged himself. –– OC

Media should evolve with time: Expert

“Media should evolve itself with the changing social and political situations and strive towards achieving the goal of national integration,” said Prof Gulzar Singh Sandhu, an eminent writer, on the occasion of valedictory function of the two-day national seminar on ‘Media and National Integration’.

The seminar was organised by Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur National Integration Chair in collaboration with Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Punjabi University, Patiala.

Prior to this, technical session was organised in the Department of Journalism in which many scholars presented their research papers. Dr Baltej Maan, professor and head, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur National Integration Chair, in his keynote presentation, said "Indian leadership is weakening national integration rather than acting as catalytic agents to reap the benefits of 'unity in diversity'. They are just acting as the caretakers of the status quo by neglecting inclusive growth."

Fake IPS officer gets three-day police remand

The fake IPS officer, Aman Kumar, who was nabbed for duping a number of people, has been sent on a three-day police remand again.

Aman was in judicial custody and was produced in the court yesterdays once again. A three-day police remand was sought to investigate more in the case.

Recently, the police also arrested Aman’s father, brother and maternal uncle. It was on August 30 when the fake police officer and three others were nabbed by the Panchkula Police for extorting money from people under the pretext of being an IPS officer. Aman, 35, was a resident of Mansa Devi Complex, Panchkula. He had been arrested twice before, once in Chandigarh and in Kurukshetra.

The other three accused have been identified as driver Swaran, a resident of Mani Majra, Ravinder Kumar and Naresh Kumar.

Man arrested for rape bid

Chandigarh, October 24
The UT Police today arrested a 30-year-old man for attempting to rape a five-year-old girl. The police arrested Babloo, who is an ice-cream vendor. The accused is the neighbour of the victim who resides in Sector 30.

The police said the accused had been trying to lure the girl for the past many days and it was yesterday when the girl told her father about the accused.

The girl's father told the police that he asked her daughter to bring something from the market when she refused to go and told him that she was scared. She then told her father that the accused took her to her residence on the pretext of giving her an ice-cream and forced himself upon her.

The girl's father informed the police which then arrested the accused. He was produced in court, which sent him to judicial custody till November 7.

The girl got her medical examination conducted at the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16.

A case under Sections 376, 511 of the IPC has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

Man caught taking bribe

Mohali, October 24
The Kharar police has arrested a private builder Anil Kumar under the Prevention of Corruption Act here.

According to sources, Anil, a resident of Sector 68, had taken Rs 50,000 from some flat owners for getting their properties registered. He told the complainants that he has to give the money to some government officials to get the work done. The complaint in this connection was made by Shital Singh and Gurmit Singh, from Faridkot, following which the police has registered a case under Section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. — TNS

Gold bangles snatched

Unidentified miscreants snatched two gold bangles from a 75-year-old resident of Sector 8, Panchkula, yesterday. The victim, Phoola Devi, was taking a walk outside her house when the incident took place.

The police said, the snatchers pushed the victim and when the latter fell down, they snatched her bangles and fled. A case has been registered at the Sector 5 police station.

PCR vehicle damaged

A police party was beaten up and pelted with stones at Ramdarbar, Phase II, at 10 pm. The party had gone to the spot after receiving a complaint of eve-teasing. PCR constable Rajbir sustained injuries in the attack and was taken to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital in Sector 16. The police has rounded up one person.

The PCR vehicle was damaged after the incident.

The police control room had received a call from a girl. As the police party reached the spot, a youth, who was under the influence of liquor, pelted stones at the rear of the Gypsy.

Fire at shop

A fire broke out at a sweets shop in Sector 37 this evening. No loss of property was reported as firemen doused the flames on time. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

7-yr-old golfer stands out

Proving mettle, seven-year-old Hunar Mittal hogged limelight in the Tata Steel IGU Lucknow Golf Tournament held recently at Mauribagh Golf Club.

A Class II student of Strawberry Fields World School, Sector 26, Hunar, started playing at the age of five. Hunar has also won laurels in various national-level events.

"My parents and coaches have been a pillar of support," said Hunar. She started playing at the Chandigarh Golf Academy and presently she is polishing her skills at the Chandigarh Golf Club and Septa Golf Club, Chandimandir.

"I will cruise ahead after I turn eight. Now, I am playing under the E Category and in the upper D Category, I am expecting a good competition. The achievements in this category will help me perform well in that category," said Hunar. On her future plans, she added, "I will try and give my best to attain the top rank in golf. The game is my passion and I will continue to give my best."

She finished second in the CGA juniors golf tournament held at the Panchkula Golf Club, bagged third place in the 46th albatross junior golf tournament held at the Chandigarh Golf Club, finished second in Tata steel IGU Chandigarh golf tournament, held at Septa, Chandimandir. "I hope she continues to bring laurels to the city. It's her dream to shoot to fame in golf and play for the nation. Although, she is capable, I want her to work hard in order to achieve her dream and do everyone proud," said Sachin Mittal.

Anil does it for GMSSS-26

An all-round performance by Anil Kumar enabled Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26 (TM), to reach the quarterfinals of the ongoing Inter-School Cricket Championship.

Anil claimed four wickets and scored unbeaten 70 runs to help in posting team's victory against Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19. After electing to bat, the losing side scored 129 runs in the allotted 20 overs with Mayank (29) and Andprabhash(29) were the principal run scorers for the team.

In reply, the winning side achieved the target with Omkar(19) and Anil(70) contributing lion's share. The team will now face Shivalik Public School in the quarterfinals.

The basketball team of St Xavier's, Sector 44, defeated Vivek High School-38 30-8 during the ongoing Inter-School Basketball Tournament held at the Sports Complex in Sector 46. In another match, St Anne's School, Sector 32, overcame NPS, Sector 18, 14-8 while St Joseph School, Sector 44, thrashed RIMT School 36-5.

Football tournament

In the ongoing Inter-School Football Tournament for Boys (U-19), DAV School, Sector 8, defeated Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, 3-0. In the tie-breaker, Rahul, Amit and Sagar scored for the team. In the second match, New Public School, Sector 18, overcame Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, by a solitary goal. Deepankar Relah scored the wining goal in the 10th minute of the match.

In the girls (U-19) category, Bhavan Vidalaya, Sector 27, went down against Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, 2-0. Anidya put the team ahead after a perfect goal net finish in the seventh minute while Arshjot doubled the lead in the 27th minute. In the second match, Ryan International School,Sector 49, routed Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, 3-1 in a tie-breaker. Komal, Prabhjot and Purva scored a brace each while Deepshika scored the lone goal for the team.

Inter-school lawn tennis tournament

Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, overcame St Anne's School, Sector 32, 2-0 in the girls (U-14) category. Aastha Malhotra beat Komal 8- 3 while Akshita Singh blanked Shamita 8-0. In another match of the same category, Ryan International School, Sector 49, thrashed Vivek High School, Sector 38, 2-0. Anshika overcame Ameya 8-0 and Harleen thrashed Sirina 8-3.

Neel shows Mankeerat the door

Tennis player Neel Singh Dhaliwal beat top seed Mankeerat in a title clash during the British Total Tennis Championship (boys U-10 category).

In a hard-fought contest that lasted over 80 minutes, Neel overcame Mankeerat in the first set 4-2, but in the second set, Mankeerat came back and played neck to neck till 4-4.In a tie-breaker, Neel kept his opponent guessing and took a crucial lead of 5-3.

Mankeerat fought back again and levelled the score at 5-5, but Neel held his nerve and played big points to bounce back in the match.

He won the tie-breaker set and named the match 4-2,5-4(7-5).

In the final of men's category, Manjot Singh blanked his opponent Nikhil Sandhu in straight sets 4-0,4-1 while Manvir Singh lifted the boys (U-12) event, after drubbing Pranav Chopra 4-0 and 4-0. In the boys (U-14) event, Siddarth battled hard before defeating his opponent Jaideep in three sets. Siddarth easily named the first set 4-0 but Jaideep raised himself and won the set to keep the fate of the match wide-open 2-4. The match went to direct tie-breaker that Siddarth won 10-7.
