Electronic Dance Music (EDM) is categoried by fans as an ever-evolving plethora of named genres, styles and sub-styles. Though the term Electronic Dance Music is relatively new, electronic music has been around for decades, first gaining popularity through influential early acts like Kraftwerk in the 1970s. So what accounts for the recent rise of EDM? Many renowned DJs credit the new avenues of spreading the genre that has cropped up in the past few years. Perhaps more significantly, EDM has found a home in the festival circuit. Concert promoters discovered that they could tap into the escalating electronic scene by adding top DJs to their line-ups and what started out as a supporting act for concerts soon became the main attraction. Sunburn festival is Asia’s Premiere Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Festival. The ultimate lifestyle experience is an annual event, which was inaugurated in 2007 in Goa. This festival is a synergy of music, entertainment, food, shopping and lifestyle that attracts music tourism in India. In the past five years, Sunburn has brought together renowned Indian and international DJs to entertain crowds, including the stalwarts Armin Van Buuren, Axwell, Above & Beyond, Paul Van Dyk, Avicii, Skazi, Infected Mushroom, Pete Tong, Dash Berlin to name a few. Best live entertainment event It caters to a wide Indian and international audience and showcases India as a dance festival destination to the world. Sunburn has been voted as the best live Entertainment Event of the Year 2008 and 2010 and the best festival of the year 2011 at the WOW Awards. After reining the electronic dance music scene for the last 5 years, Sunburn was later held in Mumbai in April 2012, followed by Colombo in Sri Lanka this year. After foot-stomping the sands of Goa for five years, Sunburn brought another electrifying experience to North India with Sunburn Noida. On October 7, Sunburn Noida witnessed the finest and world’s most sensational house music, trance and techno tunes by 20 of the World’s greatest artistes, in one power-packed day. Having successfully earned itself the title of Asia’s biggest electronic dance music festival, Sunburn ignited the city of Noida with the ultimate music experience that had a unique carnival theme choreographed for its patrons. The festival had two enormous stages that saw some of the best DJs perform and made the crowd groove and sway to their beats. Besides the world’s No. 7 Superstars DJ, DJ Afrojack being the headliner, there were eclectic performances by Moguai and the dynamic duo of Prok & Fitch. Canadian prodigy and 26th IDMA’s Best Break Through artist Arnej set an exhilarating tone for the festival. To add a pinch of psychedelic, joined the carnival were the very famous psy trance band, coming all the way from Israel, Astral Projection. India’s No.2 DJ Pearl set the main stage on fire with her breath taking sets. DJ Mag India’s No.1 Arjun Vagale, along with Ash Roy & Mash twirled some of the best tech house tunes. India’s youngest DJ, DJ Shaan created the finest electronic dance music setting the stage ready for Afrojack’s protégé Bobby Burns on the main stage.
The theme for the festival was Carnival — Wear your Sunburn Look, which encouraged the crowd to come in their vibrant, colourful and weirdest best. The idea was to make the people wear their wackiest imagination and exuberate their craziest style quotient. There was an interesting Sunburn Noida fashion line which was launched in association with prominent and renowned fashion designers such as Falguni & Shane Peacock, Akaaro, Gaurav & Ritika, Anupamaa by Anupama Dayal, Anand Bhushan, Samant Chauhan, Joy Mitra and Saajby Ankita. Psychedelic effects Sunburn provided its patrons not only the best of the music and artistes from all over the world but also state of the art technology & effects that makes it a visual delight par excellence. Strategic introduction of added attractions like Liquid Nitrogen Bursts, CO2 Cannon, Cryo-Borg, Pyrotechnics, LED Mesh, Spray Guns, 3D projection Mapping and much more, become the intrinsic part of the various acts. Electronic music is catching up in India in a big way and the jam-packed arena was a witness to it. As Shailendra Singh, joint managing director, Percept Limited, puts it, "Nothing except cricket and Bollywood has ever brought together people from varied backgrounds. We truly believe that Sunburn will provide a platform to the people of the country to unite in north India, through the medium of electronic dance music."
