Love and all that it entails forms a major chunk of fiction written around the world. But very few remain relevant ages after being written. Tyagpatra or The Resignation is a beautifully told tale that has been retold with conviction. Chaudhury brings out the pathos of the main character, Mrinal in its true force.

The protagonist is her nephew who tries to make sense of the life and times of her aunt. Having been brought up together, with only a few years between them, they had been very close and due to strange and then, unexplainable circumstances, been torn apart.

The subtlety with which the strongest of emotions are portrayed, without losing any of their efficacy, is commendable. Characters are the medium which highlight the emotive depth and strength of the novel. Mrinal comes across as a strong woman whose principles are not in tune with the times and she faces the wrath for her unconventional behaviour. But is it ever the right time for women to express themselves freely and just be themselves? The book brings to fore the strange tidings of love and other relationships and how badly they can fare in the test of time. A very thought-provoking read with a wonderful narration. — AG
