A journey inside your self is a journey of self-discovery. What you feel, how you react and what you do are all dependent on the energy inside all of us and how we choose to channel it. From our health to our personality, we can choose to determine our state. Power, Passion and Purpose shows the way to improve upon the various aspects of life by quoting experts in each field from medicine, spirituality, wellbeing and alternative therapies. In the second part of the book, the writer elaborates on actions that are conducive to happiness, giving space to jot down and chalk out an action plan best suited to you. The author’s pearls of wisdom, aptly called Power Notes, are great motivators, at par with any of the quotes that figure in this book from the wisest souls.

Search Inside Yourself is by Meng, the self-proclaimed jolly good fellow at Google. It started as a mindfulness emotional intelligence curriculum and began being practised at various levels in Google with wide success. A group of colleagues created this programme during their “20 per cent time to work on projects other than their area of their core jobs”. Spurred by its amazing success, Meng put it in book form which has received critical acclaim from the who’s who of the world.

Its triumph lies in its scientific approach towards solving everyday problems. He describes meditation as a state of mindfulness where you are in a relaxed state and concentrating at the same time. Both the books explain in great detail breathing exercises and their advantages; although in a different manner. Roulac also gives yoga exercises with their illustrations and explains how they can help. Both the books carry the exercise of mind scan as a way to creating mindfulness through being aware of the body.

Though the books are similar in what they aspire to do for the reader, their approaches are very different. While Power, Passion and Purpose progresses from the theory to the practical, Search Inside Yourself is all-encompassing — right from the start. It includes cartoon clips throughout. They add an element of humour to a very well-written and well-presented book. Nothing in the book feels like preaching or sermonising. It is a refreshing book in the genre of self-help books and is full of wit, charm and intelligent observations. Free from philosophical jargon, this is the book to choose for a quick pick-me-up.
