In quest of swar
“Recognition delayed is recognition denied.” So believes Pandit Kaivalya Kumar Gurav, noted vocalist of Kirana gharana, Of course, he is not speaking for himself but on behalf of the artistic community at large. He says, “What is the point of conferring Bharat Ratna on artists when they are on the last legs of their life?” Besides, he feels this discrimination applies only to classical artists. He fumes, “While film stars and sportspersons’ talent is acknowledged early on, classical artists have to wait for a lifetime.”
Unlike other artists he wouldn’t indulge in hyperbole and say that awards are not important. A recipient of prestigious honours like Surmani, Pt Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar and Sarav Shreshta performer by Paris-based Raza foundation, he is candid enough to admit that honours raise the artists’ stature and the concert fees as well. He is equally upfront about many other aspects of classical artists. Presently teaching at Dr Gangubai Hangal Gurukul, he trains his students to rise up to the demands of the market. He quips, “For a long time I kept wondering why classical artists are not able to draw enough audiences.” As he realised the need to master the art of presentation, to his students his advice is simple, “No painful distortions on the face please. Either keep smiling or have a meditative expression.” He proclaims, “I smile even while rendering taans.” While the beauty of his gharana, he shares, lies in its aesthetics and mellifluousness, he is not rigid and admits to influences of all gharanas, Gwalior and its taala structure in particular. Hailing from Karnataka, he couldn’t have been immune to Carnatic music. With a hint of pride he states, “I have studied all kinds of music. So what I present is a bouquet.” Yet, interestingly enough, though he comes from a family of classical artists (his grandfather Pandit Ganapatrao Gurav was a first batch disciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, the founder of Kirana gharana) classical music beckoned him rather late. He reminisces, “To begin with I was enthralled by film music and would win virtually every music contest during my school and college years.” Later Marathi Natya Sangeet caught his attention and it was only at age 18 that he ventured into what he calls the vast sea of classical music. Since then he is in the quest of swar saadhana. Though swar siddhi is what he aims at, he disagrees with those who feel classical music is all about sound. He avers, “Lyrics and more importantly the pronunciation of words are equally important.” And in the cut-throat competitive world, he feels it’s equally vital for artists to be in step with times. So this tech-savvy artist not only updates his Facebook status on a regular basis, but also has uploaded many of his bandishes on YouTube. He might be plumbing the endless fathomless ocean of classic notes, every now and then he understands one has to come out to breathe in the actual, even if polluted, air of ground zero.
Making learning easy
An indomitable guru of Kirana gharana at Dr Gangubai Hangal Gurukul, Pandit Kaivalya Kumar Gurav challenges that he can create a classical artist in four years flat. He attributes the waning number of classical artists to the fact that we have created such a scare around it that few dare venture into this stream. Among his many disciples he is especially proud of Anirudh Deshpande, who won the Zee Marathi music competition. Music for him is music whatever the genre may be. Indeed, he is not averse to singing for films.
A song in a Marathi film is anyway on the cards.

Behind the scenes
Two different worlds co-exist — one in front of the camera and the other behind it. While people might think that facing the camera is tougher, it’s actually a cake-walk when compared to what all happens behind the scenes. One man who is happy being a part of both worlds, Darshan Aulakh, tells us more.
In the last 28 years, he has worked as a line-producer for many Bollywood and Punjabi films and in-between managed to play cameo roles as well. “One just has to bother about one’s dialogues when playing a character.” The responsibility increases manifold in his job profile of a line-producer. “From locations, sets, actors and rest of the paraphernalia required, I have to ensure that everything is in tandem with the script of the film,” says Darshan. His recent project as a line-producer and actor is ‘Ajj De Ranjhe’, where he plays the role of a policeman junior to Gurpreet Ghuggi. “The film is about public-police relationship. To begin with, my character has grey shades but as the film progresses it also undergoes a change and becomes positive.” Appreciation for his work has already started flowing in and Darshan is looking forward to more substantial roles in Punjabi films. But that’s not all; he played a meaty role of the ISI chief in Hollywood film ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, which was shot in Chandigarh a few months ago. “It is the biggest project that I have handled in my career. Its production was extremely difficult because the media became really curious.” On the other hand, director of the film, Kathryn Bigelow didn’t want any sort of publicity. The biggest challenge, he says, was to choose shooting locations that made for the perfect backdrop and where chances of public intrusion were less. Darshan is also witness to the exponential growth of the Punjabi film industry in the last couple of years. “Both Jatt & Juliet and Carry On Jatta have done unprecedented business. It will encourage a lot of producers to invest in Punjabi films and take it to the next level. I just hope to contribute towards its success in some way.” ashima@tribunemail.com

Food or mood?
Overeating is one common activity with people who live to eat! A recent study has shown that the blame of this does not rest entirely with the food, but also on the kind of ambience one eats in. Of late, the restaurants opening in Chandigarh are following the concept of fine-dining where the lighting combines with the background music to create a soothing atmosphere.
The study also reveals that one tends to eat more where the ambience is loud and less where it is peaceful. Is this relation between food consumption and the ambience really true? Says Ganeev Bains, owner of The Pewter Room, Sector-26, Chandigarh, “I can’t say much about the relation, but definitely a fine-dining restaurant should have a relaxed ambience where people can just sit back, relax and enjoy their food.” What’s better than knowing from the one who has done the interiors of The Pewter Room! Says Anu Bains, “The designing really depends on what kind of place you are opening up. So, in case of a fast-food joint the sitting arrangement is not at all comfortable, interiors are stark, the flooring and décor is quite simple because they want people to eat quickly and leave.” While one looks out for a fine-dining concept first and foremost, the décor should be soothing and relaxing. No loud jarring colours like red, yellow and or orange. Also, the sitting has to be comfortable, the tables huge and the lighting enough to read the menu. Another thing to be kept in mind is that the kind of music to be played should gel with the cuisine being served. “While designing The Pewter Room I kept the décor in golden and a lot of emphasis on the lighting, which is a combination of LED’s, lamps and light music,” adds Anu. The whole idea of a fine-dining restaurant is to lighten up one’s mind. Says Surbhi Garg, proprietor Kava, a fine-dining lounge in Sector-26, Chandigarh, “The name fast food suggests that it is the kind of food one can have on-the-go, but a fine-dining restaurant is equally for relaxation. The interiors should not be overdone to distract one’s mind from the food.” What about the food connoisseurs, what do they prefer? Says Sahil Nanda, a young entrepreneur from Chandigarh, “I’m a big foodie and have literally tried every eating joint in and around Chandigarh. And I eat more at fast-food joints where the concept of self-service applies. While in a fine-dining restaurant, I’m almost full with the starters and drinks. The relaxation part is what you enjoy more at fine-dining restaurants.” Amolak Singh Grewal, a student from GGDSD College, Chandigarh, disagrees with the study. “I don’t like visiting fast-food joints; whenever I do it is because of time and money constraints. But when I visit fine-dining restaurants I tend to overeat. So it depends on good food and not the ambience.” Food for thought! sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

Ranbir Kapoor unplugged
Niche and the cliché
I know that everyone is playing larger-than-life characters so the character of Barfi is very different. It is difficult to play a simple character, one who takes joy in little things and pays attention to detail. Barfi is a film for the masses as much as the 100-crore films. The film has a fantasy element to it. It is a different world set in Kolkata and Darjeeling in the 70s. Barfi is heroic in his own way! I do not have the confidence to do a Rowdy Rathore or a
Dabangg. Bigger and better
I am popular where people see my commercials, magazines, movies, etc. There are a lot of places where people do not recognise me. I know that it will take time but I want to be the finest actor and biggest movie star in the world. I have time on my side and I will make it. My fans have been very kind to me and I love what I do. Formula one!
I do not want to follow any formula or do what has been done before. Abhinav Kashyap's film is more pan-India and different from what I have done before. It has item songs, tapori-giri and action. I would love to do a movie where I punch the villain and he goes flying and people who are watching my dance throw coins in the aisles and are completely enjoying themselves. On Salman
Khan
Salman Khan is one of the most misunderstood people in the industry. He is the finest human being ever! He taught me a lot about grooming, body building and make-up. He has such a big heart. A lot gets written about the two of us but it is all untrue and unfair. Our families have been friends for years. Gossip-mongers
I am happy that now I get as much attention for my acting and work as I get from my relationships. Deepika and I are good friends now. I am single and I have the right to live my life the way I want. I am happy living with my parents now and we are rebuilding our house. I have my privacy. By the end of the year, I will move out because I would like to have a live-in relationship. Let us see how that goes.

Single, yet again
Kangna Ranaut had talked about her British boyfriend for the first time on Simi Garewal's chat show. He never appeared in public until recently when he was in town and there were stories that no one had seen him. He was a doctor-cum-scientist named Nicholas Rafferty and quite a handsome man.
They have broken up now. The reason being he wanted to get married and settle down with children while she is gung-ho about her career in Bollywood. She also directed a short film in Hollywood. Moreover, she is developing her own fashion line. A source says, "Kangna won the National Award and she has proved herself as an actress time and again. Yet, she was always living in the shadow of stories about her not-so-nice ex-boyfriends like Adhyayan Suman and Aditya Panscholi. She wanted to clear the air and Nicholas, a perfectly normal and sorted guy, was the best person for that. This relationship has shown that
she can have a good and normal relationship with a good, clean guy." Kangna Ranaut will be seen in Krrishh 3 and a couple of more films that will release next year. We also hope that she finds a suitable guy once again!

Kareena’s new milestone
Actress Kareena Kapoor believes that her portrayal of a fading Bollywood superstar in Heroine is her bravest role so far.
The film, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, is said to have been inspired by real-life incidents from B-town and Kareena says not many actresses would have taken the risk of accepting this role. "I wanted to be a heroine since my childhood. I am happy that Heroine has turned out to be my bravest role. Not many actresses would want to play the role of a declining superstar," Kareena said. Kareena accepted the part because she connected with the character of Mahi Arora and also felt that this was a challenge worth taking. "I always take challenges when it comes to performance oriented roles and Heroine isn't something that I could have missed. I played a prostitute at the age of 22 when many people around me said that it was a wrong move and said I was way too young to pick up such a part — PTI

B-town supports cartoonist Aseem Trivedi Protesting against the government, Bollywood stars have come out in support of cartoonist Aseem Trivedi who was arrested on Sunday by the Mumbai Police for 'obscene' cartoons. Here's what they said... Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur: "There have been far greater acts of contempt against Indian Constitution than cartoons by Aseem Trivedi, many by those sitting in the Parliament." Music composer Vishal Dadlani: "Aseem was arrested for drawing this. Given what our politicians have done to India, I don't see why." Actress Neha Dhupia: "Ironic that a cartoonist gets arrested, when our current day political scenario is so outrageously comical." |

Miss Goody Two Shoes? Nah!
Singer Miley Cyrus and fiance Liam Hemsworth are a suspect in a criminal battery after an unidentified man filed a police complaint against the duo for getting involved in a fight in a Hollywood nightclub.
The man filed a police report with the LAPD claiming he and his friends were sitting behind Cyrus and Hemsworth at Beacher's Madhouse at the Roosevelt Hotel when things turned rowdy, reported a publication online. He claims that the Hollywood couple exchanged some heated words with him which was followed by a fight. He also claims that the Hannah Montana star allegedly "pushed" him and "hit him in the face." However, the cops said they didn't "see any visible injuries" but have lodged a complaint. Cyrus's representative dismissed the reports as false.

Cruel intentions
Music mogul Simon Cowell says pop star Britney Spears is quite mean as a judge on the singing reality show.
Spears, 30, is on the judging panel along with
Cowell, Demi Lovato and LA Reid, reported a magazine. "I think the girls do a great job and the contestants are great. The show looks different than anything we've ever made before. Britney is a fascinating person because you just don't know anything about her. She's very unpredictable. You never know what is going to happen. She has taken this very seriously and she's surprisingly quite mean," he said.
Cowell, 52, said he likes both Lovato and Spears and considers them two racehorses, who are very talented but very difficult to control. "We have no control over these two whatsoever, and there are many, many times that we disagree. But that's what's made it more interesting this year. They are both unpredictable and have different and strong views," he added. The show will premiere on September 12. — PTI

Don’t shrug it off!
A smart jacket or an elegant wrap can jazz up any outfit. And when the season is changing and you are looking for a key element to get the concept of layering right a shrug is the answer, for it is an outfit that can give a chic twist to an otherwise casual attire.
“The fashion conscious realise the worth of this particular piece of clothing, hence shrugs have upheld their rightful place in a well-planned wardrobe,” says Neha Sidhu from Voila. She adds, “Though shrugs have been in fashion for long, this season they make for a perfect pick. From three fourth length sleeve knitted shrug to batwing sleeve shrugs, there are satin and crochet shrugs in asymmetrical lines in vogue this year. Detailing is another trend that you should look for as we are witnessing a lot of embellishments this season.” There are some catchy elements in this piece of clothing which makes it an extremely smart dress. “Well-fitted is the basic need of a shrug but these days we have added details to show the impeccable design elements. Buttons, pearls and gold leaves are some of them,” says Akhil Duggar, creative head, Madame. He adds, “Shrugs are a global trend and they are definitely not simple. Besides the plain, single tone, short style shrugs, we now have the free-flowing, crochet laced, asymmetrical lines and varied silhouettes.” Well, there is nothing simple when it comes to fashion and one has to acquire a taste to carry a trend. As for colours Akhil says, “Brick red should be back and since coloured denim is going to be in this winter too, so brighter the better.” An uber stylish yet simple piece, shrugs are indeed indispensable this year. “Given that a new season always experiments with the silhouettes, it should come as no surprise that shrugs are coming in varied shapes and sizes. Textured shrugs, long coat style shrugs with quarter and bat sleeves are quite a trend this season,” says Ankush Mahajan from Whistels in Sector 17. For a structured yet feminine look, add shrugs to your wardrobe.

Yoga mudras
Yoga hasta mudra is a gesture or position of the hands that locks and guides energy flow and reflexes to the brain. A mudra may involve the whole body in a combination of asana, pranayama, bandha or it may be a simple hand position. Each mudra sets up a different link and has a correspondingly different effect on the energy, mind and body. The human body is made up of the five elements and each finger represents one of these five elements—the thumb is agni (fire), the forefinger is vayu (air), the middle finger is akash (ether), the ring finger is prithvi (earth) and the little finger is jal (water). An imbalance in these elements causes diseases. These imbalances can be set right by hasta mudras. When a finger is brought into contact with the thumb, that particular element is brought into balance. Some commonly used mudras and their benefits: Gyan mudra (mudra of knowledge) How to do
The thumb and the index finger are brought together in a gentle contact, not pressing hard, while all other fingers are kept upright. Form a circle between your thumbs and index fingers and keep your palms face up. There is no particular time duration for this mudra. Practise by sitting, standing or lying on bed whenever you have time. Benefits
Increases memory power and sharpens the brain, prevents insomnia and cures psychological disorders like hysteria, anger and depression. Prithvi mudra (Mudra of earth) How to do
Place the tip of the ring finger on top of the tip of the thumb. Extend all the other fingers and keep them comfortably straight as possible. Benefits
It helps to increase weight, improves the complexion of skin and makes the body active. Varuna mudra (Mudra of water) How to do
Join the tip of little finger with the tip of the thumb while the other fingers extended. There is no particular time duration for this mudra. Benefits
It retains clarity in blood by balancing water content in the body, prevents gastroenteritis and muscle cramps. Vayu mudra (Mudra of air) How to
do
Bring the index finger to the base of the thumb and press gently the thumb over it. Let the other fingers be straight. Practise this Mudra for 45 minutes, in 12 to 24 hours, to reduce the severity of the disease. For best results practice it for two months. Benefits
It can cure rheumatism, arthritis, gout and paralysis, and also useful for cervical spondylosis and pinched nerves in neck. Apan vayu mudra (Mudra of heart) How to do
The tips of the middle finger and the third finger touch the tip of thump, while the index finger touch the base of thump and the little finger is extended. Benefits
It strengthens the heart and regularizes palpitation and also purifies the entire body. (Juneja is a Chandigarh-based yoga expert)

Darker shades of silver screen
Divya Dutta The audience is sensible and sharp. They take one look at the promos of a film and know whether they are going to watch it or not. I know Heroine is the most awaited film. But what I didn’t know was the popularity my dialogues would get in the promos. Wherever I go I am asked to mouth those lines. I was pleasantly surprised by the response. I also realised that those lines said a lot. It was a deep insight into the industry. And people have always been very curious as to how it functions. So, when I say yeh film industry hai, yahan ya to manipulate kar lo ya ho jao, I get hounded with messages. They instantly like those lines because they arouse their curiosity. What manipulations happen here behind the success stories? The fact is manipulations do happen. Groupism, god-fatherhood, one-up-man-ship—all work here! It’s the survival of the fittest. It’s a highly competitive world. So, the stakes are high and people do try their best to be ahead of others. But does not that happen everywhere? The crab mentality, pulling others down to be up yourself? Works in every sphere! When I was mouthing those lines in the film, I realised what a deep meaning they had. What a statement it was! Matter of fact, hard-core that hits you hard! A Madhur Bhandarkar special! In many of my lines spoken in Heroine, I found deep insights into the film world which I didn’t realise despite being an actor. Hard facts which you choose to ignore sometimes or are subconsciously aware of. The interesting thing is that the atmosphere on the sets was so light that Madhur didn’t let us feel the pressure of highly intense scenes. But when I go to events and when I see the people have graduated from saying Veer Zaara dialogue sunao to saying Heroine ki line sunao na, I feel I've progressed. And it’s one of those films besides being a special film in my life that has taught me a few lessons while saying those amazing lines. Ye heroine alag hai ekdum! (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

London dreams
For years now Southfields Gallery in London has been providing a platform to budding artists. This time around, the gallery is taking a step forward. Director of the gallery Kuldeep Singh Rehal is all set to give international exposure to the artists of London by displaying their works in India.
The exhibition, Mix-media Exhibition of Europeans and African Art, will be put up at Gurgaon in the last week of September. Kuldeep, who was at Sip ‘N’ Dine in Chandigarh on Tuesday to promote his mission, shares details about the exhibition, “Twelve artists from Europe will be sending their works for the event. Three of these artists will fly down to India to talk about their works.” The works will include paintings in acrylic and mix- media and sculptures as well. “People in India have opened up to the idea of investing in art. A lot of private art galleries have sprouted in the last few years; I am just trying to contribute to the art scene in India.” The paintings will fall in the range of Rs 25,000-1,60000. The sculptures will begin from Rs 2 lakhs. Next he wants to take works of Indian artists to London and hold an exhibition at the Southfields Gallery. But that isn’t easy as he will require sponsorship. “Corporate social reasonability helps in causes like these but then it’s still not a cakewalk to convince the corporate houses,” he says.

Haunting melody
Raaz 3, the latest erotic horror thriller, has one track to behold and that is Deewana kar raha hai. It has an Arabic feel to it as the Bhatts love to borrow melodies from East-European, Arabic and Pakistani works. This track is beautifully sung by Javed Ali and sounds good. It is written and composed by Rashid Khan. Exotic feel
Javed Ali's soulful voice has a resemblance to the Arabic track Ana law azeto sung by Egyptian singer Mohamed Hamaki. It is amazing in terms of the lyrics and melody. Ritika Sharma, student,
Panjab University Pure bliss
This composition by Rashid Khan has a pure love element and I just love the song. It is so soothing. The pitch and tone of the song is so relaxing. Deepak Khanna, bank employee Sweetly intense
The track demonstrates a sweet and quiet intensity in terms of lyrics and music. Rashid has employed a nice amalgamation of instruments and penned the track brilliantly. In short, the track is quite impressive. Neha Dheer, student, GGDSD College (As told to Sabia Talwar)

As real as it gets
Bagging an opportunity to play Lord Ram on television is a once in a life time opportunity for any actor. Take it from Gagan Malik who plays Lord Ram. He is thrilled with the set up and the response to the show. He talks about his journey so far. How excited were you when you bagged this role? I was naturally excited. I am only beginning to fathom the responsibility entrusted on me. I consider myself deeply fortunate to have been selected for this prestigious role and I would like to thank Zee television for this lifetime opportunity. What kind of preparations have you done for the role? Playing Ram, unlike any other character I have played so far, requires a great deal of preparation be it in terms of reading up on the finer nuances of the Ramcharitamanas or studying and imbibing everything that Ram stood for. As an actor, I will try my best to get the body language, the tonal quality of my voice and the diction right. I am really hoping that the viewers will appreciate my work. I have given up on non-vegetarian food. I try to control my temper all the time. I believe in imbibing Ram's virtues in my personal lifestyle and this will help me portray him better on screen Have you read the Ramcharitmanas? No. I don't need to. I have grown up listening to stories from the Ramayan. My mother has written the name 'Ram' over 2 crore times in her diary. Thanks to my mother's devotion to Lord Ram, I have internalised the nuances of the epic without having read it Did you work on your looks as well? I do basic forms of exercise like yoga. I do the surya namaskar, dand-baithak, perform hath yoga and run extensively post pack-up. It gives me a robust appearance required of the heroic prince I play. We've heard that you have grown your hair for the role? Yes. Wig doesn't look authentic and it can get bothersome after sometime. I decided to grow my wavy locks and bid goodbye to the wig.
