Doctored tale
Pooja Gandhi and Pooja Mehta not only share their first name but also a lot of other stuff— both work at an infertility clinic at one of the private hospitals in Chandigarh. Both are daughters of a doctor father and homemaker mother, are married to doctors, have two children each and also share similar basic nature. Having met three years back at the clinic, they have forged a strong tie. “We share a very close bond. Not only do we spend time together in the hospital, we often manage to talk after work hours too,” says the duo. No professional rivalry, no ego clashes, not only they gel well professionally but personally as well. “All I have to do is ask Pooja for anything and I know it will be done,” beams Pooja Gandhi. Mehta reflects the same sentiment.
On Air
Ritu Sandhu and Anil Punj have been co-hosting the show Baton Baton Mein together for last 14 years together on FM 107.2. Ritu, who is also the producer of the show, shares an easy camaraderie with Anil. “Over the years, there is little that we need to explain to each other. Many things are understood without any words,” says Ritu. Both tune in well, end up playing the same song and are popular with their audience for their chemistry on air. “It’s been really a beautiful association, professionally as well as personally,” says this team who host their show on Sunday evenings at 6:30. And, this Friendship Day got them a beautiful present; their show that was only available to Chandigarh got a wider reach of four states.
Teaching care
For Harmohini Bajwa, an assistant professor in a college at Jalandhar, the move to new city earned her best friend Jaskiran Kaur, her colleague. “Jaskiran came across as a smiling girl, ready to give a helping hand to whosoever needed,” says Harmohini. Settling down in a new place with her little daughter was made easy by her new friend. These friends now spend more time together outside work. “I know even if I call Jaskiran at the middle of the night, she would be there for me,” says Harmohini who of course reciprocates the gesture!
Self service
Interestingly our second pair of best buddies again share their first name! Manish Jaiswal found his true friend Manish Tolani while opening of a Marriott property in Chennai. “He was my only Hindi speaking mate out there,” shares Manish Jaiswal, manager, Quan Spa, JW Marriott. Five years on, Jaiswal is in Chandigarh, Tolani is in Pune.
“Our friendship hasn’t been diluted with distance. We talk often, still consult each other when it comes to taking important decisions in life,” says Jaiswal. A social person, this leading spa expert believes in nurturing healthy bonds at work and what made Tolani his best buddy was similar background, mindset and hobbies that both share. Working for the same company keeps them in touch. And, the two bond over two entirely different things — passion for fitness and love for the finest maltas.

Acting smart!
It doesn’t stop with one or two hits like Carry On Jatta and Jatt & Juliet. Punjabi film industry is stepping up with every single production. This is working well for the entertainment industry and actors. In fact, with some of the actors like Manreet Kaur from Hosiarpur, Punjab has already reached Hollywood, on a smaller level though. After playing a Muslim girl in the movie West Is West, Manreet has her eyes set on Punjabi movies.
“If you would have asked me to do a Punjabi film two or three years back, I would have really thought about it. Now that the industry is doing so well, one should be proud to be part of it,” says Manreet, who has recently done an advertisement for a car brand where she shares space with actor R Madhavan and MTV Roadies fame Raghu and Rajiv. For Manreet acting was never the part of her plan. After acting in a play Leather Coat, Manreet discovered her love for acting. “I don’t know how many people would agree to this, but I don’t think we can ever learn acting. Either you know how to act or you don’t,” she puts it across. What good are acting schools for we wonder! Manreet has an answer to it. “They teach you the technique, acting only comes from within.” Punjabi movie Yamley Jatt Yamley, a Marathi movie, Jai Maharashtra Dhaba, Bathinda and a Bollywood film Teri Bin Dil Nahi Lagta, Manreet feels there is something for everyone in the entertainment industry. However, what matters at the end of the day, other than hard work and dedication, are the contacts that an actor builds up over the years.

Simple strokes
Caught in the deluge of works that boast of having complex themes; simpler works of art come as a welcome change. No hidden meanings, no abstract figures; whatever is on the canvas is self-explanatory. Innocence oozes out of each canvas. And sincere efforts made by 11 students of Punjabi University who together have put up the exhibition of their works at Punjab Kala Bhawan become apparent too in no time.
Nature, spirituality, countryside, women… are the themes picked up by students and executed in simple strokes, simpler figures. Aliens by Swati Sharma is her perception of the extra-terrestrial world, and she has let her imagination run wild. The final product thus has faces in bright colours and ribbons in her paintings depict the flow of life. “I chose this theme because I knew I could experiment with colours and shapes. A realistic theme wouldn’t have given me so much of liberty,” says Swati. Using the freedom optimally, her works make for a visual treat. Next is Malika Bhatti, who picked up Nature as her theme. As expected, in her ten works, she has played with colours to make figures that support the theme. There are trees, rose petals…but the real winner in her collection is a five-painting series, depicting the landscape of Ludhiana, her hometown. There are concrete blocks done in black and surrounded by a few green trees, making the message of the paintings quite obvious. Spirituality is a common thread among works of at least six students and each has painted a different version of it. If Maninder Kaur has used figures of monks to convey the message, then Anvinder Kaur has picked up stanzas from Gurbani with a figure of a woman in the backdrop. Anvinder, besides spirituality, has also used the scene of a village for the rest of her works. In contrast with the works of Malika, green is used in abundance, aptly mirroring the landscape of the countryside. In continuation with the theme of spirituality, Harpinder Hans has played with the shape of trees, “All in a bid to explain that trees can become the mediator between mankind and God. There is no better medium to reach God than through nature.” Woman is the subject of art for Rupinder Kaur, who has painted her melancholic moods in backdrops of villages, towns and metropolitan cities. “Women have to struggle a lot in their life, only the problems vary.” In one of her works, she has painted a figure of a man who has lost his physical strength but still enjoys enough power to dominate women. “Isn’t that a bitter truth about our society--men might lose their physical strength with time, but will still be considered superior to women,” questions Rupinder, adding to the simple yet meaningful works at the exhibition. On till September 6.

Par Excellence
The most important part of putting is to get the ball rolling as soon as possible on the intended line with the right amount of speed. The ball should not fly or be airborne soon after impact.
If this happens then the ball has been either hit with a downward blow or the putter has too much loft at impact. This would impart backspin to the ball and the ball would slow down quickly on the green and remain short of the hole. A correct stroke would be when the putter is on an upward path or hits the ball with an ascending arc. This coupled with a de-lofted putter face would impart top spin to the ball making it hug the ground and roll further. In technical terms the loft of the putter at impact has to be less than the rise angle of the stroke to create top spin. If the putter is rising on an arc of 4 degrees when it contacts the ball and the loft of the putter is less than 4 degrees at impact we will get top spin. To get the putter to be on an ascending path we must keep the putter head low on the backswing so that it moves upwards through the ball. If the backswing would be high the putter would be hitting the ball with a descending blow. The backswing can only be low if it is moving slightly inwards. Therefore a good path would be a slight arc which would be inwards on the backswing and coming to impact from an inwards to square path with the follow through going slightly inwards again. The worst situation is when the backswing goes outwards. An outward path would have to lift the putter high of the ground and hit the ball on the downswing. Once the shape of the stroke is set we must ensure the ball is positioned just after the bottom of the arc which normally coincides with the centre of the body. Therefore the correct ball position is just ahead of our centre so that we can catch the ball on the upswing. The ball should be struck in the middle of the putter face both horizontally and vertically too. If we move the ball too far ahead in the stance we will catch the ball low on the putter face which has a negative effect too. So the ideal ball position would have the ball struck on an upward path with an on centre impact.

Rising star
Taranpreet Kaur, an eleven-year-old chubby girl who belongs to Chandigarh, has been part of the movie Joker where she danced to two tracks, namely Sing Raja and Jugnu Banke. Her twinkling eyes dream of making it big in Bollywood someday. We catch up with her.
Early start I have been dancing since I was four and I love Bollywood style. Also, at six I joined Swami Ram Thirtha Cultural Centre, Sector-24, Chandigarh to learn kathak and there I also acted in a couple of plays. Dancing doll I am fond of dancing and that’s why I joined the Saroj Khan Dance Academy, Sector-32, Chandigarh for one year. The most memorable moment was when I got the lucky Rs 101 from the dance expert herself. It’s through this academy that I got an offer for Joker. The next move During the shooting of Joker near Sirhind, Punjab I got an offer for a Marathi movie titled Jai Maharashtra. I play the role of a Sikh boy whereas the lead actor is a Marathi guy who lands up in Punjab to open a dhaba. The movie is due for release in December. Not a joke Dancing in Joker is my first ever experience and I’m not at all disheartened with the response. I enjoyed being on the sets with the cast of the film including Akshay Kumar and Farah Khan. sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

Bold steps to B-town
After the success of Jism 2, porn star and Bollywood newcomer Sunny Leone now aims to establish herself as one of the successful mainstream actresses of B-town by dabbling in different kinds of roles in the near future. "My full concentration is now on Bollywood. I want to do different and all kinds of roles, especially playing meaningful characters. I want to establish myself as a successful mainstream actress," said Sunny. "In order to become successful in Bollywood, for next two-three years I will stay on in India as I want to give my hundred percent," said the 31-year-old Indo-Canadian. When asked whether it hurts when people and a section of the tinsel town tries to look at her more as a porn star by overlooking her acting skills, Sunny said, "Everybody can have their own perception and their own way to look at everything. I can't change that.” In the erotic thriller Jism 2, Sunny played a porn star, who is used as a honey trap for catching a dreaded assassin. She admits her background helped her bag the role. "Actually they were looking for an actress who was comfortable with her body, okay with erotic scene, and didn't have any problem in projecting herself as a porn star and that's where I came in," she said. Sunny already has a second film in her kitty, Ragini MMS 2. —IANS

Being a mother
From feeding her baby to changing her nappies to singing lullabies, Lara Dutta is busy playing a hands-on mother to her seven-month-old daughter Saira. She says that the rest of the things have taken a backseat as she is enjoying the most satisfying, yet challenging role of her life. The former beauty queen is so engrossed in nitty-gritty of her domesticity that not only her entire schedule but her conversation too revolves around Saira.
"In all honesty, Saira has become the biggest selection barometer for me to choose on what I want to get back into because it is difficult to spend much time away from her. I would take up a new film only if something is really fantastic and different," Lara, who is married to tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi, said in an interview. "I am putting everything on the backburner, so my baby is my first priority," added the doting mom. Lara has just wrapped up shooting for Bejoy Nambiar's David and says she chose to be a part of the film as it didn't require her to work more and at the same time it was different from what she has done so far. "My role in David was not massive in terms of screen time, but it was challenging as I hadn't done anything like that and so I agreed to be a part of it," she said. The actress says motherhood is challenging but fun. "Motherhood is great and challenging at the same time. It is thoroughly rewarding too. Saira is a wonderful baby to have. You start getting the hang of it just a week after becoming a mother," said the 34-year-old. The model-turned-actress won the Miss Universe title in 2000 and three years later made her Bollywood debut in 2003 with Andaaz and went on to do films like Masti, No Entry, Housefull and Don 2. She married tennis champion Mahesh Bhupathi in February last year.In the quest to strike a balance between being a wife and a mother, Lara tries to be herself too. "Though I am a mother, wife, at the same time I am also my own person. For me, to be able to work, be a mother, and enjoy motherhood is also important," she said. The actress is on the road to lose the post-baby flab though she admits it would not be an easy job. "To get back into shape is difficult for any new mother as you have to be strict in your diet and workout. But for me the criterion was never that I have to lose weight in four months or five months," she said. "So I haven't lost all the weight that I had put on, but I am happy and know that I am on the right track," she said adding there is no short cut to losing post-pregnancy weight. "Some women are genetically blessed and after delivery they are back to wearing jeans, but for us Indian women we are not blessed like that; so you have to watch what you eat but not at the cost of your health as you are feeding a baby," she added. Meanwhile, after Chalo Dilli, she is now working on two scripts, which will again be produced by her under the banner Bheegi Basanti Productions. —IANS
Comedy on cards
Action, romance and thriller —Emraan Hashmi has done it all on the big screen, but now the actor, who is set to feature in humour-laden film Ghanchakkar, says he is uncomfortable with "over-the-top" comedy.
"Ghanchakkar is a comedy with a difference. I've seen different kinds of comedies in Bollywood, but I cannot do that kind of comedy. That over-the-top comedy, I don't even understand it. I don't even feel like laughing at it. (So) I'm doing a comedy which I enjoy and understand," said Emraan. The 33-year-old will be seen opposite his The Dirty Picture co-star, Vidya Balan, in the film, directed by Rajkumar Gupta. It is slated to release next year. Further about the film, he said, "It has suspense, thriller, dark humour and comedy. The way some things are funny in a family atmosphere that is what has been shown. It's a very funny film, and I'm sure the audience will like it." For now, Emraan is gearing up for the release of Raaz 3, based on black magic. He will be seen alongside Bipasha Basu in the movie, set to hit screens this Friday. —IANS
Face to face with reality
Kim Kardashian has been told to keep dreaming about her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who says that "she needs to get a real acting job" first. The reality star had recently said that she had a goal of seeing her name on the Hollywood boulevard. "I think there was a quote where somebody said that reality stars will never get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. So, of course I'm so competitive that I think that it would be a huge achievement and a goal that anyone would want. I would love to break that mold," a publication quoted her as saying.
But the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who dole out stars to celebrities burst her bubble. "She has not been nominated. She is a reality star. We don't do reality stars. She needs to get a real acting job then come to us," a source said. To be fair, Kardashian has some non-reality chops to her name. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star stopped by for three episodes of Drop Dead Diva and also has a role in Tyler Perry's new flick, The Marriage Counselor. However, it takes more than that to land on the star-studded walk. A source said that honourees must have won awards such as an Emmy, SAG Award or an Oscar as part of the criteria. Also, according to the Chamber's website, "anyone, including a fan, can nominate a celebrity as long as the celebrity or his/her management is in agreement with the nomination." Then if they are selected to receive a star, they are required to fork up the 30,000 dollars required to create and install the star. Kardashian could be eligible if the Chamber changes its rules, but the source said reality stars aren't "on our radar right now." While reality TV, for now, isn't considered a contribution to television, Kardashian theorised that the industry might open up one day, similar to how rap music progressed to widespread acceptance. "I think [reality] is still a new form of entertainment that was kind of an unexpected thing," she said. "It reminds me of rap music. When rap music first came out, people were like, we don't understand this, what is this, and it's just a fad. "But rap music is definitely here to stay, and I think reality shows have proven they are as well. But when something is newer, people don't really understand it," she added. —

Edited out
Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz's role has been edited out of To The Wonder by visionary director Terrence Malick. The famously reclusive director is famed for leaving some of the biggest names in Hollywood on the cutting room floor, a publication reported. Weisz accepted a role in the film for the chance to work with Malick, who has directed films like Badlands, The Thin Red Line and the Tree of Life.
"I had the experience of working with him (Malick), but I will not have the pleasure of seeing my work," said Weisz. The 42-year-old star said that when she took on a role in the film, she did so not knowing if it would be "...for four or five days or three months. In the end I was there just for a few days." The film stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem. The star's role was cut along with that of Michael Sheen, Amanda Peet and Barry Pepper. The other actors edited out from Malick's movies include Adrian Brody, Michey Rourke, Gary Oldman, Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Sheen. Brody was furious when his scenes from The Thin Red Line'were left on the cutting room floor. "You spend all this time in an unfamiliar place, you experience incredible things, and then you come home, you're wounded psychologically and you have nothing to show for it," he had said. Penn was equally angry when he failed to appear in the finished version of 2005's The New World. "I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing there and what I was supposed to add in that context. What's more, Terry never managed to explain it to me clearly," he had said. —

No hard feelings
Rapper Chris Brown has ended his war of words with Drake which began with their altercation in a New York nightclub in June. Brown, 23, said that he no longer has "beef" with Drake, 25, about the brawl, which resulted in a number of people getting injured including professional basketball player Tony Parker, reported a publication. "That situation has already been handled and Chris has no beef with Drake. We don't think about him. Drake who? That club incident was what it was and Chris left that baggage back where it happened," a source said. Brown and Drake are both up for the Best Male Video prize at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) next month. While Brown has confirmed he will not be attending the event at the Los Angeles Staples Center, he said that his decision has nothing to do with Drake. "None of what's going on with the VMAs is because of Drake. You can believe that," he said. — PTI

Kamalika is excited to play the character and talks about her widely appreciated family show on Sahara One. Are you excited about your new show Jhilmil Sitaron Ka Aangan Hoga ? It is a great experience. I loved the concept and closely watched Kalyani Devi’s character which was being played by Sudha Chandran. It is amazing to be working with stars like Shreya Jha, Pankaj Tiwari and Rakesh Paul. You will be seen on television after a long time? I just wanted to go on a break so I took some time off from television. I am really lucky to be a part of the family show by Kavita Barjatya. The show Jhilmil Sitaron Ka Aangan Hoga has already struck a chord with the viewers. How has been you experience so far? My experience so far has been amazing. I have finished the shoot of some episodes. As an actor, it gave me a chance to explore myself to the hilt. How were you picked up by the Rajshree’s? Nothing in particular, I am an experienced theatre actor. So, Kalyani Devi’s mannerisms come naturally to me. How was it working with the Barjatyas? Both Sooraj Barjatya and Kavita Barjatya are great to work with. They treat every actor like a family member. Both are very supportive and I am grateful to them for giving me this role. —Dharam Pal

Ready to mingle
Monaz Mevawalla who plays Jharna in Rajshri Productions’ Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga on Sahara One does not approve of the custom where the groom lives in the bride’s house as ghar jamaai. Even though Jharna’s husband Raj (Pravin Hingonia) is shown as a patni vrata pati on the show, in real life Monaz would never want this to happen to her. “I want a real man and my family will throw me out of the house if my husband decides to stay with them. Personally, I do not approve of this practice,” she says. Monaz who has had a string of unsuccessful relations feels she has learnt with time. “I know now what I don’t want in life. I do not want a mama’s boy; all I want is my boy,” she adds. She doesn’t want an arranged marriage. “I have met many guys from Ahmedabad, but I did not like even one of them. My family has now given me a free hand to choose my life partner.” When quizzed about her current relationship status, Monaz is quick to say, “I am single and ready to mingle, but I want somebody who really impresses me and sweeps me off my feet. I want a smart and good looking guy who will love me unconditionally. I want to be with a guy who can take care of me.”

The year ahead
If your birthday is September 4...
Don’t exert yourself beyond a point. You will like to overspend on others. It is time to change your dominating attitude. Work in close cooperation with your family to share the ups and downs of life. Your changed attitude will give them unlimited joy. You should learn some lessons from your defeats. Success and recognition would be yours if you stay focused. Number four is the worker, practical with eye for details, trustworthy, hard-working and helpful. Ruled by the Uranus, you are steady, logical and disciplined. If expressed negatively, stubborn and narrow-minded. You’ve got a window into the struggles of others, particularly those from different backgrounds. This stirs up a passionate desire to help. But look before you commit. Do not, I repeat, do not feel guilty about turning someone down. The extra work you try to do is likely to go off the track anyway; just making sure what’s already in motion stays on track ought to be enough to keep you occupied. And it looks like you’ll be occupied with a messy plan. Be strong when facing difficulties. The year 2013 will highlight your good side and you won’t depend too much on others. Those born in the last decade have a lot of potential. They’ll be extremely inventive and this could lead to the fulfillment of an ideal. You will need to be patient, because the best will be saved for the last. You will discover that good things come in small packages. If you want to let the adventure begin, you must be aware of the risks. Co-ventures dominate and you may be switching off to several different members with Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius. Your spouse may demand your time, especially in some ‘pet project.’ Family gatherings and celebrations dominate the year. Money will come in from recently concluded deals. Recent activities on the financial front is set to continue and you will have an offer that is of benefit to you, or at least one that shows that others are keen to keep you on board and cater to your demands. Meeting a new friend at a ‘gathering’ of some kind is likely. The first four months of 2013 will have you in doldrums. There could be several mental quandaries that will keep you troubled. Those engaged in service should be extra careful as there are chances of the stress taking a toll on their married life too. Health needs extra care this week. Watch out against gastric troubles and putting on excess weight. Strong feelings leave you without a doubt about where you stand with someone. Reason may go out the window, but who needs to be logical when your emotions are pushing you so powerfully? Mood: Cheerful and optimistic. Preferred signs: Virgo and Sagittarius. Positive colour: Bright yellow. Selected days: Monday and Friday. Favourable numbers: 5, 9, 15, 25, 29 Rishi Kapoor (September 4, 1952, Mumbai) is the second son of Raj Kapoor and brother of Randhir Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor. Married to Neetu Singh in 1980, he has two children, Ranbir Kapoor, who is also an actor, and Ridhima Kapoor. Rishi debuted in his father’s 1970 film Mera Naam Joker playing his father’s role as a child. He had his first lead role opposite Dimple Kapadia in the popular 1973 film Bobby which became an instant hit with youngsters. He also directed a film Aa Ab Laut Chalen starring Rajesh Khanna, Aishwarya Rai and Jaspal Bhatti. He appeared in Namaste London. Rishi has acted in the movie Chintu Ji in which he plays himself. The astrological analysis indicates his success in directorial career in the times to come. |
