THE Indian hockey touched a new low by finishing at the bottom in the Olympics. After such a shameful performance, I feared that the whole team may apply for political asylum in London rather than to come back and explain. If we think from the point of the spirit of the game, then some team has to come last. To be at the bottom is also not a simple thing. India had to fight hard with South Africa to get the wooden spoon. I wonder when the members of the team return what they will do with their hockey sticks. They cannot auction their sticks as there won’t be any bidders. The players may use the sticks to clear off cobwebs from the roofs of their houses. Sometimes your shoes or chappals slip under your bed in such a way that you cannot reach out to them. A hockey stick would be the best tool to use in such conditions. Players could also use these as a walking stick when they grow old.
A hockey player kept his stick under his bed before sleeping. His wife asked, “Why have you kept the stick under the bed?’ He said, “In case, some thief breaks in.” The wife told him, “You could not hit a ball in the whole tournament, how would you hit a thief with it?”
