Act one–perfect
Ashima Batish

Unlike others in the industry, Richa Chadda, who successfully essayed the role of Manoj Bajpai’s first wife in Gangs of Wasseypur, has begun her career on a different note…

Being experimental is one thing, but kick-starting your career as a mother of four grown up men in a movie is plain adventure! How many female actors have done that before? Richa Chadda, however, is happy to have embarked on the journey to stardom at a stage where other actors reach after playing glam dolls to the hilt. That’s not all — the feat has been achieved without a godfather in the industry and minus any star boyfriend to boast of! The latter, Richa feels, has become more of an obligation now. “I am proud to have been able to make it big without any compulsory qualifications,” quips Richa, who plays the role of Manoj Bajpai’s first wife in Gangs of Wasseypur.

Not just the film, her role in particular has also been appreciated. And what more can she ask for—Anurag Kashyap’s project, premier at Cannes, followed by a standing ovation and then astounding box-office collection. For everything good that has happened to her, she says the changing face of cinema needs to be credited. “The difference between popular and parallel cinema has been diluted. There are more directors who are ready to take a risk with new subjects and fresh faces,” says Richa, who is in Chandigarh to inaugurate Grand Asian Wedding Week, which begins from August 25 at JW Marriott. At the same time, competition has increased manifold, which is bound to happen because talented actors are getting an opportunity to perform. “Beautiful faces need to have brains now.” She adds that it’s the character roles that are a true test for an actor and she has been able to score well in it.

Style check

Since Richa is here to inaugurate a wedding exhibition, it’s obvious for her to share her style tips. “I keep it simple and elegant. An overdose of bling is not for me, neither is a lot of volume.” True to what she says, she was supporting a bright orange jacket with an LBD and gladiator heels.

The difference between popular and parallel cinema has been diluted. There are more directors who are ready to take a risk with new subjects and fresh faces — Richa Chadda

Next on the cards is a short film by Meera Nair in which Richa plays a happy-go-lucky girl. There are more projects lined up, including something ‘big’, which she says is too early to talk about. While she is happy doing performance-oriented roles, she won’t mind sharing screen space with a star Khan. “I have grown up admiring them. I wanted to become an actor because I liked what they did on screen.” Before getting a break strictly through auditions in Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, she took to theatre, “It is the real training ground. Once can make out the difference between actors who have done theatre and those who have entered the industry only through references.”

Even though she had theatre experience to boast of, Richa studied the lifestyle of Muslim housewives in rural India. “Their body language, the way they spoke, even their gestures — everything was jotted down on paper.” But she was also conscious of not copying them as such, “For that would have taken away the spontaneity in my character. I wanted my performance to be more natural, than one that would have looked more practiced.” Richa will soon be seen in a few commercials as well, which is another yardstick to judge how well an actor is doing. With loads of works, she is doing fine for an actor who started her journey the other way round!

Mythology Magic
Ashima Batish

Despite the growing popularity of reality shows and family soaps, the popularity of television serials based on mythology have hardly seen a downward swing…

Television shows based on mythology have always been sacrosanct for the Indian audiences. Weren’t the roads literally deserted on Sundays when Ramayan was on air? Was it very different in the case of Mahabharat later? With time, the parameters on which shows are judged have changed and now it is all about TRPs, but the abiding charm of mythological stories is here to stay. Life OK’s Devon Ke Dev Mahadev is surely a testimony to this fact and now another version of Ramayan has catapulted Zee channel to the number one slot, reaffirming the fact that stories based on mythology have managed to carve a niche of their own amid a slew of reality shows and family soaps.

If the recent shows are to be compared, it’s Devon Ke Dev Mahadev that has been able to hold the interest of the audiences. Being considered as the next popular show after the original Ramayan and Mahabharat in this genre, the show’s narrative is making all the difference. Nikhil Sinha, the producer, is happy with the recent TRPs of 3.3 and also the fact that the show has been able to create an audience base despite tough competition from other shows in the 8 o’clock time-slot. “We are still behind Balika Vadhu in terms of TRPs, but that doesn’t reflect negatively on the show. We caught the fancy of the audience by our approach; we didn’t present Lord Shiva as god per se but as a human, who experiences very human-like emotions,” says Nikhil.

The huge fan-following of Mohit Raina, who plays Lord Shiva in the show, further underlines the popularity of the show. He has 2,238 followers on Twitter, which is pretty decent for a TV actor whose show has been on air for just eight months. Raina likes to talk about the popularity of the show than his own, “The show has struck a chord with audiences for two reasons; first the people in our country are very religious and welcome anything that adds to their knowledge of Indian mythology and second, we weaved all the stories associated with Lord Shiva in a manner that has not been seen on the Indian television before.”

Even for the epics aired on television, there has never been any dearth of audiences or TRPs and, notably, at any given point of time there are four to six different shows running on different channels. Shikha Swaroop, who is being seen once again on television after Kahani Chandrakanta Ki, as Kaikai in the latest version of Ramayan, explains why mythological shows are here to stay, “There is always a fresh generation of audiences that we cater too. Also in every show, new aspects of gods and goddesses are shown. Technological advancements give an edge to the same story.” Shikha readily accepted the role, for the show was being made on a grand scale.

Trying to recreate the magic of the original version of Ramayan, the show will be simulcast on Doordarshan and Zee TV at 11 am. If not like times of yore, the show is at least expected to bring down the traffic congestion; with mythological shows, you never know!

Small screen appeal
Jasmine Singh

Being a television actor is nothing short of a regular nine-to-five job, but the ones who are a part of the drill have invented ways to break the monotony — they enjoy every day on the sets. Meet Shaleen Malhotra, who plays the lead role of Arjun in the serial Arjun on Star Plus.

After being part of the reality show Roadies 4 and then taking up the role of a VJ, Shaleen is now all for television and his new show till the time something new like films happen.

“I had to struggle for three years and regular auditions before I landed up with this show,” says Shaleen adding that the channel was looking for a much older guy first. “They were looking for someone who was older and then as luck would have it, they reduced the age bracket of the lead character. And there I am, doing the role.”

Now that television has taken a fancy to investigative and crime-based shows, Shaleen seems to have stepped in at the right time. “It isn’t a cakewalk playing the role of a cop. I have lived on the romance of Shah Rukh Khan and action of Tom Cruise; this soap has the mix of both,” he adds. Shaleen had to prepare for the role, which meant extensive training. “I learnt martial arts for the role and mannerism of cops,” says the actor who is pretty occupied with the show that is gaining TRPs. Not only this, Shaleen had to bring in changes in his routine as well. “Everyday on the sets is new; there is a lot a travelling. After work, the little time I am left with I try to catch up on some sleep,” he says.

So, does he think of taking this action to the silver screen? “It is a dream come true for any actor; working in films is something I would want to do eventually.”

Knowing your stars

After being in the industry for more than a decade, Bipasha Basu says an actor's life is a sad one. She says even superstars fade away after a point and are remembered only when they die.

"An actor's life is very sad. The biggest of superstars in our country fade away after some time and are remembered only when they die. But what to do? It is very vulnerable, very sad, but that is the way it is. Nothing is permanent in their life," said Bipasha. A classic example is that of Rajesh Khanna, Bollywood's first superstar. All but forgotten for almost a decade, he emerged briefly in a rather sad TV spot and the next thing we knew was that he was in hospital, came out, went in again and came out for the last time - only to die a few days later. Of course, there was a nationwide outpouring of grief - and this is just the point Bipasha is making. "Once you achieve success, you just want to work, you don't want to be forgotten. It is an emotion that every actor worldwide, male or female, goes through," said the 33-year-old, who plays an actress whose career is on the downfall in her forthcoming film Raaz 3. Directed by film-maker Vikram Bhatt, the movie, a sequel to 2009 film Raaz, also stars Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta.

Bipasha says people want to know everything about an actor's life and that is the reason films like The Dirty Picture, Raaz 3 and Heroine are made. "Acting is a very enigmatic line. Being a celebrity people always want to know about your personal life - what you are? What you eat? How you live? Where you go? Who are you dating? How you breathe?"

Raaz 3 is about struggle of an actor's life to attain fame and success. And the actress says that an actor's life makes an interesting proposition for a movie theme.

"It is an interesting profession to make a film on - either the actor's life or an actress'. In today's time everybody wants to be an actor. It is a fascinating profession and people want to know about behind the scenes. And that is the reason there have been so many movies made on the same topic," said Bipasha, who made her acting debut with the 2001 film Ajnabee.

So, are such films actually based on real life incidents? "These are all fictional and little drawn from reality. Such films are basically different types of storytelling of different directors, which make for very interesting stories," added Bipasha. An actor's personal life has always made headlines and even the Bengali beauty has not been spared - be it her relationship with Raaz co-star Dino Morea, or her romance with actor John Abraham and their break-up.

"Poeple are always interested to know what you are doing in your personal space. It makes great news for people to discuss over a meal. But they forget we are also humans, who have a personal life, struggles and we too go through good and bad times.

"It is quite harsh at times to expect an actor to be okay with whatever is written about him. Actors and not super humans, they are normal people," said the actress, who has also worked in Tamil, Telugu and Bengali language films. Known for her performances in films like "Corporate" and "Dhoom 2", Bipasha is game for well-written comedies. Bipasha's future projects include English film Singularity and director Suparn Varma's horror project "Aatma".

All hell breaks loose as Frahad's mother Nargis realises that her son's dream girl is her sworn enemy.

Cute pairing

The best thing about the movie is the cute pairing of Boman Irani and Farah Khan. Farah's debut act is just so playful, full of fun and just apt as per the requirement of the character. Boman is a delight to watch and his role is completely adorable.

Ritu Sahni, housewife

Realistic portrayal

The aged couple of Boman Irani and Farah Khan looks very realistic which makes the movie a must watch. The chemistry between both of them is quite amazing and they make a cute pair. The movie is a light-hearted rom-com and I just loved it.

Sanika Sharma, student, PU

Laughter riot

Boman and Farah have played their roles quite decently and their unusual pairing looks wonderful and full of life. It is a laughter riot and an entertainment package.

Divender Singh, bank employee

The Expendables 2

The Expendables are back and this time it's personal! The team accepts a mission from Mr Church (Bruce Willis) to retrieve an item from a safe from an airplane that was shot down in Albania. Lead by Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), the team includes former SAS soldier and blades specialist Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), martial artist Yin Yang (Jet Li), weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), demolitions expert Toll Road (Randy Couture) and sniper Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), the group's newest member is Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth).

Although the odds are stacked against them, the band of mercenaries rips through opposing forces, wreaking havoc in the already hostile territory. They're also faced with the task of shutting down a deadly threat with enough power to shift the balance of the world's power forever.

Action-packed

The movie has no twists, turns and surprises and is very predictable. It is surely a full-loaded action package with some cheesy one liners.

Bharat Mathur, student, GGDSD College

Adrenaline rush

There is less of character building, so one tends to get confused in so many characters. Also, the dialogues could have been more powerful as per the situations. Overall the cast gives you and adrenaline rush with their performances.

Jatin Kalia, bank employee

Retro feel

It gives you a flashback of 80's and 90's action movies which is close to every guy's heart. Although, the first part was better off but this part makes you curious for the next one in line.

Trying to act cool?

Being professional: Robert Pattinson
Being professional: Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson managed to avoid talking about his personal life since Kristen Stewart’s cheating scandal on a show, by joking about his homeless state, saying he is “living in a trash can.” He was out and about in Hollywood for a chat with Jimmy Kimmel and looked cooler than ever in his casual blazer, jeans and sunglasses combination.

He asked whether he was homeless by the host - after pictures emerged of him moving out of his posh LA mansion.

“I still am. No, I rented this archway and I just live behind it. In one of those trash cans,” a publication quoted him as saying.

“I buy everything off Craigslist, my friends, that’s what I was initially looking on it for,” he said.

Despite Stewart being in hiding since her affair with married film director Rupert Sanders, Pattinson has vowed to walk down the red carpet with her for Twilight premiere.

The actor has put her well-being before his own feelings when he made his decision to accompany her in front of the cameras in November.

“He’s told movie bosses he’ll walk the red carpet to save her from embarrassment and any female fans booing her,” a source said.

“He is being professional and taking the higher moral ground,” the source added.

Pattinson has already made a number of high profile interviews and red carpet appearances to promote his new film Cosmopolis. — ANI

Concrete has today become a material of choice for designers world over. Most of the trendy retail outlets, offices, restaurants and even residences have stained concrete floors.

Stained concrete floors offer a limitless range of colours and designs. A cement floor is now no longer the boring grey we all remember. Colouring the concrete has given this material a complete makeover. Here is why you must consider it as a flooring option

  • It is a green building choice, slow to heat up and cool down. Stained concrete floors can reduce your electricity bills and are environment friendly.
  • These floors look good in both traditional as well as in contemporary decor styles.
  • Your investment in durable stained concrete flooring will give you the value for your money since it can last a lifetime. Wood, tile or carpets will sooner or later need replacement. These floors will not warp, buckle, or flake like some other flooring options. Additionally, stained concrete floors are ultraviolet light resistant, so resist fading or discoloration.
  • They are easy to maintain. Just sweep and use a damp mop. There is nowhere for the dust and dirt to hide. No need for chemicals or harsh cleaning products.
  • These floors look stunning. Properly designed and installed concrete flooring is capable of capturing the look of far more expensive flooring options, including granite or marble.
  • You can even enjoy the look of a rich leathery appearance.
  • Stained concrete floors maintain optimal indoor air quality. It is a good option for those who suffer from dust allergies.
  • This flooring option is water resistant as well. Stained concrete floors allow low amounts of moisture to pass through without leaving behind any negative results or effects.
  • Stained concrete floors can be handcrafted and customized to your liking and choice.

Upgrade your home with beautiful stained concrete flooring and add to the value of your home!

Strengthen the bond
Simmi Waraich

My husband and I had serious problems as he was highly dependent on alcohol. Towards the end he was confined to home but would still continue to drink. He died last year. My younger son remains aloof, he does not express himself. I feel he is falling behind in school as well. My older child is more communicative and is doing fine. How can I help my younger son?

Meena, Jalandhar

For one, you are probably already helping him, just by being there with him. A few tips that help—keep to family routines. Sticking to a routine helps reduce stress. Family meals, bedtime rituals, night time stories, hot baths, hugs, and backrubs help in bonding and also bust stress. Monitor TV viewing. Help your child learn stress signs by pointing them out like ‘when you get tense you clench your fists’. Stay calm yourself, avoid overreacting to things. So whenever you’re tense or upset, take a few deep breaths to calm down and tell yourself ‘take it easy, it’s nothing I can’t handle."

If he continues to avoid friends or his marks drop do get an evaluation for depression. Treating it is less harmful than allowing it to continue, mild medication and counselling are used in very young children safely too.

My daughter has Bipolar disorder. She had a manic episode after being on antidepressants. She is 20 years old. She is still on medication. However, she recently had a relapse. I didn’t recognise it initially. How long will she need medication?

Sukhwinder, Mohali

Do keep talking to your doctor about medication etc as it helps to understand the illness. Antidepressants can at times precipitate depression and therefore need to be given carefully after discussing with the concerned doctor. Usually a person is maintained on a mood stabiliser like lithium or sodium valproate for two to three years. In case of a relapse, two mood stabilisers may be given together. What needs to understand is one may need to try out 2-3 medicines to find the correct combination.

Master Chef
Salad days
Manju Dewan

The word 'salad' is synonymous with health. Of course, earlier the good old salad was just a mixture of raw veggies like cucumber, tomato, onion etc and as an accompaniment to the main meal and voila! Today it occupies a proud place on the table and many times is a whole meal in itself. Here we have experimented with green leaves of the root plant arbi to make a nutritious green salad with adequate seasonings sesame and patra.

Method

  • Mix all the ingredients of filling and make a thick paste.
  • Take a patra leaf and spread the batter on it.
  • Place the second leaf on top of it and spread the batter.
  • Place the third leaf on it and spread batter.
  • Fold all the leaves into a tight roll and steam for 5-7 minutes.
  • When the leaves cool sufficiently, slice them.
  • Roll the slices in roasted sesame seeds.
  • Mix all ingredients of the salad and chill.

To serve

Heat the patra rolls on a non stick pan for a minute. When warm, garnish with carrot slice and serve with cold salad. Dewan is a Ludhiana-based culinary expert.

Farah said, "Throughout the filming of the movie Sonakshi ne mujhe bahot pareshaan kiya." She later teased about the same with the audience and said, "Sonakshi would always come on time. In fact, before time and none of us would be ready.” Everyone burst into laughter when they heard Farah’s story.

Cruise tastes Indian flavours

Hollywood star Tom Cruise surprised an Indian restaurant manager in Hertfordshire when he dropped in for having spicy food, and enjoyed a meal comprising lobster and chicken tikka masala.

Cruise and his eight companions visited the Veer Dhara restaurant in St Albans, where they were shooting for his latest film, All You Need Is a Kill.

Cruise, one of the highest paid actors, tried to settle the bill of 220.85 pounds by American Express card, but the restaurant does not accept cards. Another member of the party paid in cash and left a tip of 79.15 pounds, according a source.

Manager Darshit Hora said it was "a bit of a surprise" when Cruise's party arrived just before 10 pm. He said that the restaurant had received a call at about 21:00 BST from a man wanting to reserve a table for 10.

A source reported that an hour later, two cars drew up outside and a bodyguard came in to reveal the identity of the diner and ask the manager to make sure the meal was a low-key affair.

"He said, 'Tom Cruise is visiting your restaurant and doesn't want to disclose that he will be here; he is with his family and just wants to have a nice relaxing evening'," said Hora.

"He said he was staying about 15 miles away and came here because it was recommended," the manager said.

Audience speak

Since people’s verdict makes or mars a show, it’s important to highlight their take. A couple of ardent Devon Ke Dev Mahadev fans share why the show is doing so well and is more popular than others. Radhika Gupta, a home-maker, feels the show is a hit because it caters to all age groups and is equally popular with kids as well as adults.

“When I see my family sitting together to watch Mahadev, it reminds of the good-old Ramayan days when everybody just left everything they were doing to watch the show.” Rather than the larger-than-life feel that was given to divine characters earlier, it’s now the human touch that’s making them a hit with the audiences. Shikha Vasudev, a private bank employee, makes sure she catches up with every episode of Mahadev. She says unlike Ramayan and Mahabharat, Mahadev is showcasing aspects of mythology that people weren’t aware of earlier. “Women observe the 16 somwar fasts for Lord Shiva but then nobody knew the actual logic behind them; a couple of episodes of the show were dedicated to explaining the same.”

'The truth is that...I've been misquoted....Why would I condemn a beautiful, smart, intelligent woman such as yourself????' she continued.

She even called herself Leone's biggest fan. 'N lastly.....it is u who's responsible for my compelling urge to have shot for Playboy....More power n peace to u....ur No.1 Fan' she added. Leone, on the other hand, chose not to reply to Chopra's tweets.

Jackie Shroff Actor Jackie Shroff, who plays a veteran journalist in Dutch director Laurens Postma's first Hindi film Cover Story, says he was attracted to the unusual story which has only two characters. An official adaptation of legendary Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh's film The Interview, the film also stars newcomer Anjum Nayar.

Produced by Glorious Entertainment, the movie releases on September 28. "It is the finest role I have played in a long time. The story was absolutely new to me. It is full of intrigue and suspense. Newly divorced actress Katie Holmes is set to present her clothing line Holmes & Yang at the upcoming New York Fashion Week.

The 33-year-old will show in front of the biggest names in the fashion industry on September 9 at the Lincoln Center, reported a publication.

"This is a big deal for Katie to show in the tents, under the full attention of the fashion editors and the glare of the media scrutiny," a source said.

The Batman Begins star founded Holmes & Yang with design partner Jeanne Yang in 2009.

"They could have done a small show elsewhere, so this proves she and Jeanne are very serious about their business," the source added.

The ready-to-wear line is stocked in exclusive boutiques including Barneys in New York and Harvey Nichols in London.

Holmes has previously described her collection as basics with a twist to suit everyone. — PTI

Saying goodbye: Katy Perry and John Mayer

Singer Katy Perry has reportedly split from guitarist John Mayer just after two months of dating.

Perry, 27, and Mayer, 34, went public about their romance when they made an "affectionate" appearance together at Soho House in West Hollywood in June.

However, all's not well between the two and they have decided to call it quit, reported a website. "She's really upset about it," said a source.

Another source said, "She is making it seem like it wasn't serious with John, but she is hurt."

Perry divorced comedian Russell Brand this year, and briefly dated rocker Robert Ackroyd in spring. Mayer's exes include Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston.
