On World Photography Day, ace photographers talk about their favourite cameras
It steals moments, casting them into a frame of unforgettable memories, it steals the soul, reflections of which can be seen in the end result…Near, far, farthest, camera can bring the world down to whatever point it wants. Technology has definitely given a boost to photography. No longer you have to wait for the labs to develop the negatives and then cry for hours together on wrong posses you made. On World Photography Day, we ask famous photographers about their personal favourite cameras and how the world changes behind the lenses.
Diwan Manna
Known for conceptual and experimental photography, camera needless to say is Diwan's sole companion when he is travelling. Latest muse: I am using a Mark 2, 21 mega pixels camera these days. Without getting pixilated, without using sharpness depth of colours, it helps me get large prints. Another advantage that I see with Mark 2 is that it doesn't make any noise at 1600 asa. Digitally yours: Digital cameras have definitely changed photography for better and the best. Now, one doesn't have to carry many bodies while shooting. The best part is of course you don't have to wait for the lab to deliver results after a long wait. If you don't like a particular shot it can be re-done.
Raghu Rai
A photograph picks a fact of life, and the fact stays there forever. Raghu Rai has captured India in all its forms, shapes and sizes, creating facts that can be picked up for reference at any point. Pick of the moment: These days I am using a D 800 Nikon, for serious work and D 3200 for general work which are 36 and 24 mega pixels, respectively. Test of time: I have been a Nikon user all my life. Their professional models were sturdy. A good range of lenses is what they have always offered. The last camera I used was a Nikon D 700, with 12 mega pixels. Now, of course they have higher pixels. Beginning of a journey Changes in technology have made photography more interesting and easier. It has given photographers the freedom to shoot under any light conditions, even in middle of the night. It is more like a journey that you start with a picture, and you can see where it is headed.
Mike Pandey
He has not only captured wildlife and environment in his camera; he has preserved them in the shots that narrate a story. Closer to heart: My Cannon 5D Mark 3 with a 400 mm lens gives me good close up shots that can be shot from a distance without intruding in the animal's space. Unforgettable picture: I was shooting in Ranthambore and I didn't realise when a tigress leaped on me. Incidentally, the camera carried all the pictures in the cache memory, which have become my most favourite pictures.

Boy, he has arrived!
From the award winning documentary The Still Standing to Shuttlecock
Boyz, as an independent filmmaker Hemant Gaba's journey has been full of struggle, but he wouldn't have it any other way!
All the bad things that can possibly happen to any movie, had happened to Hemant Gaba's Shuttlecock Boys, one of the few Indie movies to see theatrical release in recent times. "We ran out of money during the shoot and further a studio in Mumbai destroyed its negatives during the editing, followed by eight to nine month-long fight to ask them to fix the damage," says 32-year-old Hemant, in Chandigarh on Saturday for the screening of his movie for the Short Film and Documentary Festival. With a smile on face, he, however, says the movie was finally released earlier this month in a few selected cities and has received good response. The struggle of Hemant and many other film-makers, passionately following their love for the visual art and in this process exploring resilient and cutting-edge themes, indicate a change witnessed in the independent filmmaking scene in India. The festival which began in Sector 15 on Friday evening too has many entries by filmmakers, whose themes include a wide range of subjects. Agreeing to this, this Delhi based filmmaker says that there is an increasing number of documentaries being made on unusual subjects and there is a shift towards independent film-making. He, however, feels that it is still a tough journey and there are not too many funding agencies are ready to finance amateur film-makers. "Many opportunities are available once your work gets recognition in some big film festival but more than anything else, it is the passion and creative instinct that moves most of us," says Hemant, a software engineer turned film-maker who has faced ups and downs in both personal and professional life. He says, "I had a lucrative job in the US, but there was no job satisfaction. Then Swadesh happened and I found my heart in film-making. Despite the constant struggle in the last four years, I think, I have found my true calling." His stint started with a documentary, The Still Standing, which got him applauds and an award at Mumbai Film Festival. Shuttlecock Boys, he feels, is a big step forward. The movie, as he explains, is a realistic portrayal of the Indian middle class youth, finding their existence in the backdrop of new urban India. A story of four buddies, who bond over a game of badminton every evening, realise their days are passing by aimlessly. Then they decide to do something. Hemant says, "There is no sense of cynicism in the movie. I don't mean that there is no frustration in life today but our idea was to go beyond the obvious, to invoke the spirit of the youth and make them aware of their potential." What next? "I am working on a script exploring how the issue of sex is being dealt with in India."

Classic example
Indian classical vocalist Rishi Rajan and western classical instrumentalist Stuart Masters want to promote world peace through music
In any popular music genre, being average is good enough. But mediocrity has no place in classical music and if you happen to be just average than be ready to face the wrath of those who master it. Responsibility increases manifold when it comes to a classical musician. "It's not only your reputation that's at risk, but that of the entire gharana which you follow," explains Rishi Ranjan, a trained classical musician, who has a training period of 20 years to his credit. He is a sarod player and a guitarist and can also play several other ethnic string instruments. While he has performed all over the world, it's the latest project he is working on that he considers his biggest achievement. Rishi, in collaboration with Stuart Masters, a trained musician of Western classical instrumental, is coming up with an album dedicated to world peace. Titled, Real Truth or Sachcha Hai, the album is influenced by the compositions of Bade Baba Allaudin Khan. The title track Sachcha Hai has been written, composed and sung by Rishi himself. "We wanted it to be a true international project, the reason why instruments of the East and West have been used and vocals are in English and Hindi both," says Stuart, who was recently in Chandigarh to shoot for the project along with Rishi. The devotional album, they hope will be able to make people realise the ultimate truth. "Materialistic goals take one nowhere, the real ambition should be to serve humanity." Even with all the credits and years of hard work, Rishi isn't confident of how well the audiences will receive the album. "For that one needs great marketing skills but the first sign of a great artiste is that he should be a bad businessman. The combination doesn't exist." He says that even if twenty per cent of the music followers appreciate the album, their purpose would be solved. The album will release next month in Canada, US, UK and India. Parts of it have been recorded in London and rest in India at Rishi's studio in Sector 41. "At times, I wonder how will I be able to make a global impact while sitting in my garage studio, especially when people hardly know about classical music," says Rishi who is from Senia Maihar Gharana. But then, he realises that pure music has always been very
powerful. ashima@tribunemail.com

Morning binge!
The concept of breakfast buffet might be new, but is catching up with each passing day
The temptation of Sunday morning puri and channa is hard to resist. But our foodies are getting adventurous and breaking the monotony through breakfast buffets, where there is a lavish spread of Indian, Continental, Chinese and even Japanese dishes. Though the lunch buffet has been accepted very well, we wonder how the concept of breakfast is being received. "Weekends usually are a rush for the breakfast buffet as people have time at hand. On weekdays, its in-house guests and few corporate people who eat," says Chef Pallav Singh from Hotel JW Marriott. He adds, "We have a daily changing menu and we serve fresh juices that are extracted in front of the guests. Apart from this, we have a section of healthy breakfast items for people who are calorie-conscious." While he says that the concept of breakfast buffet has been well-appreciated, we always thought that people love to laze around on Sunday morning and prefer 'brunch'. "Yes, people in large families usually like the concept of a brunch but considering the nuclear families and the working women, breakfast buffet is a good idea," says Vivek Bhasin from Forno in Sector 9, Panchkula. Having started an Italian buffet, he says, "The city is high on food and people quite love different things. We have a variety in Indian and Italian dishes for the buffet and people love to experiment." While the restaurants are putting their best 'food' forward, people love it, especially the women, as they can relax on Sunday mornings! "We are regular joggers and the concept of breakfast buffet is great for us, as we start our day early and have an option of healthy breakfast where we can have choice of fresh juices, salads and much more than what we can cook at home," echo Harmanpreet Dhillon, a telecom professional, and his wife Gurpreet Kaur. Serving breakfast as early as 7.30 in the morning, manager of Buzzczar in Sector 35 says, "We have a number of people who start their day early, so the concept of breakfast is a great option for them. And otherwise also all the hotels who have in-house guests have breakfast buffets, so making it open for walk-in customers is an added advantage."

Down the memory lane
Shahid Kapoor may be 30 years old but he still looks like a boy and his boyish charm is hard to miss. The star talks about his childhood days, stardom, acting and more. As typical as it gets
I was a typical boy and I loved playing outdoors. I would play till ten in the night even in Delhi's heat! I loved playing cricket. I was naughty. I would get punished every week. I was not too focused in school. My mother used to lock me up in the bathroom in the dark. A cockroach would come out and I would get really scared. Now I have grown up and I am okay with cockroaches, not scared of them anymore! Acting and all that
My father told me that to be an actor you have to observe everything and everyone. That is the first step. It is difficult to be an observer at all times but one has to do it no matter how mundane the observation is. You learn so much from just observation. You imbibe what you observe and then draw from it to act. Divine intervention
I am not superstitious. My mother wanted me to wear a ring before my first movie released and I did it for her and for me because I wanted the movie to work. The movie was a hit but the next three were flops. So you have to take responsibility for good and bad films and cannot depend on a ring. Parties and people
I go to parties and I am more talkative now. That is because my shyness was perceived as arrogance. So now I make an effort to talk to people, to make them feel comfortable around me. Inherently, I am shy and like to keep to myself. The art of multi-tasking
I cannot multitask and I envy girls because most of them can do it like breathing. I have the worst memory and forget what I did yesterday. I really want to multi-task. There is so much I want to do so I cannot focus on one thing.

Giving it a shot
On the occasion of the World Photography Day, amateur photo enthusiasts gather under the banner Pixel Palette to celebrate it in their own way. Random Shots, an exhibition on at Punjab Kala Bhawan -16, puts pictures of these nine photographers on display. Engineer, manager, journalist, doctor… their professions are different but what binds them together is their passion for photography.
Landscapes is what Anil Prasad likes to explore and it's nature that catches Dinesh Verma's fancy. His raindrops in green and fuchsia are adorable. Beautiful shots of Chandigarh and Amritsar by Gurpreet Singh, an engineer by profession, are on display. A picture of Kathiya Bazaar, in the holy city, captures the taraju (balance) that we hardly see these days. Nature and wildlife are themes presented by Sanjay Kaushal and Shubh Mohan Singh, respectively. Subhash Sapru catches people in different moods. Works of journalists Vikas Kohal and Sarabjit Pandher are eclectic. Floating clouds over the hills by the former and beautiful bamboos reflecting in the water by the latter make pretty pictures. It's Guramrit Kaur's colourful frames of ducks, leaves, clouds catch the eye. Her love for photography might be relatively new but she is planning to take it up as a career. On till August 20.

Ranbir’s revival plans…
The last film made under the iconic RK Banner was Aa Ab Laut
Chalen. Now Ranbir Kapoor wants to revive the banner with a film he will star in and which Rishi Kapoor will produce.
A source says, “Ranbir Kapoor met up with Sriram Raghavan who showed him a script and Ranbir found it perfect for his grandfather's banner. Rishi Kapoor will supervise the script. Rishi is also his financial manager. Rishi will be producing this movie. It will go on the floors only next year as Ranbir is quite busy with
Barfi! and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani at the moment. The movie will go into pre-production this year.” It is interesting to note that Sriram Raghavan has made good movies and some of them did not work. Raghavan helmed Ek Hasina Thi and Johnny
Gaddaar, both gritty thrillers. Then he made the debacle that was Agent Vinod. Fortunately, he still has takers and this RK film could just be the hit he needs and deserves, critically and commercially. RK Studios has made memorable films like
Sangam, Bobby and Barsaat. The revival is a very big deal and an event in itself. Both the RKs and Sriram Raghavan remained unavailable for comment.

Over and done with: Chris Brown
Rapper Chris Brown is reportedly baffled by Rihanna talking about the brutal assault that left him pleading guilty to a felony battery charge. Brown was charged with and later pleaded guilty to the February, 2009 attack on his then-girlfriend Rihanna and was handed a hard labour sentence and ordered to stay away from her. Rihanna had spoken about the assault at length, in one of the television interviews, saying she was left embarrassed and humiliated after the incident, reported a publication online. "Chris is just confused about Rihanna's decision to bring up the past again and again — this time in an interview with Oprah. Chris just doesn't think it's productive or relevant to rehash the events since essentially nothing new is being revealed in the interview Rihanna has done with Oprah. "Chris doesn't begrudge Rihanna at all for talking about it but he thinks that in order for them to both move forward and not be defined by that one night, it would be better to stop bringing it up," a source said. It is said that Rihanna and Brown have been on talking terms since she did her interview with Winfrey. "They have a very complicated relationship," the source added. — PTI |

Divya’s life on silver screen
A film titled Love Behind The Border, allegedly based on the life of well-known actress Divya Bharti, who ruled Bollywood in the 90s, is being made.
While the casting for the protagonist is still being finalised, Greece actress Tatiana Tsapikidou has been penciled in to play the role of Divya's costume designer Neeta Lulla. “In Divya's last moments, her designer, Neeta, and her husband Sajid Nadiadwala were constantly by her side. The makers felt that Tatiana is perfect for the role of Neeta. Actor Vije Bhatia will play Sajid,” informed a source. “The film is not to sensationalise the loss of a good actress, but it is just to pay a tribute to her,” added the source. After giving a string of hits like Shola Aur Shabnam (1992), Deewana (1992), Dil Aashna Hai (1992), to name a few. She was often referred to as a young Sridevi.
