Man arrested for robbery

Ropar, August 18
The Kiratpur Sahib police has arrested Sherdin, a resident of Mianpur Handur village, for robbing a defence personnel of his gun and Rs 6,500 near Hardonimoh village yesterday.

However, the other five accused in the case remain at large.

The police said Bikar Singh, a resident of Nurpur Bedi, had lodged a complaint that six persons- Bakhsish Khan, Manjitdeen, Sherdin, Mushtakdeen, Iqbaldeen, Noordin- had attacked him on the night of August 16 and snatched money and licenced gun from him.

The police has registered a case in this regard.

2 killed, 1 injured in accident near Dinarpur village

Ambala, August 18
Two persons were killed and one seriously injured on Saha-Shahbad road near village Dinarpur when a canter collided head on with a truck late last night. The deceased were identified as Pardeep Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, and Balkesh from Himachal Pradesh.

According to information, the canter was coming from Delhi and was on way to Shimla.

The driver of the canter, Pardeep, and Balkesh were rushed to Civil Hospital at Ambala Cantonment where they were declared brought dead. Another occupant of the canter, Maheshwar sustained serious injuries and was referred to PGI, Chandigarh.

The police has registered a case against the driver of the truck who managed to flee after the accident. It is to be mentioned that a few months back a school van collided with a truck on the same road, killing 13 students.

Labourer murdered

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 18
The Mandi Gobindgarh police found an unidentified body of a migrant labour, who was killed by unidentified persons, near Verka Milk plant located on the Chaturpura road here today.

After receiving the information, the SHO of Mandi Gobindgarh police station, Gurmeet Singh, rushed to the spot and informed the SSP Hardyal Singh Mann.

The body of the victim, who was believed to be 35 year of age, was lying in a pool of blood.

A dog squad team of the forensic experts were called at the site.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the victims was attacked late last night. The police has found the victim's shirt from a near by bush.

A case has been registered and investigation is going on.

The police has sent the victim's body to the mortuary where it would be kept for 72 hours for identification.

Lightening claims man’s life

One person was killed and three injured in two separate incidents of lightening in the district yesterday night. The diseased has been identified as Sanjiv (30), a resident of Nangal town. The three injured, Raksha Kumari and her two sons, belong to Jindwari village near Anandpur Sahib. According to local police, Sanjiv was standing on the roof of his house when the lightening struck. He was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead. According to information, Sanjiv was a newspaper hawker.

In another incident, a house in Jindwara village near Anandpur Sahib was damaged by lightening. According to Ram Sarup, his wife Raksha Kumari along with two sons Gaurav and Saurav, was sleeping when the lightning struck at their house and the plaster from the ceiling fell injuring the mother her sons. They were taken to the BBMV hospital, Nangal. Ram Sarup, however, escaped unhurt as he was sleeping in the other room, he said.

Man gets three-year jail

Court of Sessions Judge SK Goel today sentenced a person to a three-year rigorous imprisonment in a fake currency case.
The accused has also been imposed a fine of Rs 2,000.

The court convicted Surinder Kumar, a resident of Fatehabad, in the case. A co-accused in the case, Deepak Kumar, has, however, been acquitted. The third accused in the case is a juvenile and his case is pending in the juvenile court.

The case was registered on March 23, 2009, when the UT police had arrested Surinder near Satsang Bhawan in Sector 26. The accused used to sell fake notes of Rs 1,000 in return of real notes of Rs 500 there.

Following a tip-off, the police laid a trap by deploying a constable as a decoy customer. The accused, Surinder, was caught red-handed selling fake currency to the constable.

His accomplice Deepak was arrested later on. The court acquitted Deepak as the prosecution failed
to prove the charges against him.

The police had also recovered fake notes from the possession of Surinder which were sent to the CFSL for examination.

Besides, a photostat machine was also recovered on the basis of inputs provided by Surinder Kumar after his arrest.

The police had also recovered 12 fake notes of Rs 100 denomination from the accused. Surinder Kumar had a video lab in Fatehabad and then started a finance business, but left Delhi after suffering losses.

Pedestrian killed in mishap

Chandigarh, August 18
A pedestrian died after being hit by a truck near Kajehri on Friday. The truck driver managed to flee.
Complainant Ram Khilawan, a resident of Kajehri village, alleged that the driver fled after hitting his brother Chabba Ram near his residence. The driver left the truck behind.

The injured was rushed to the PGI, where he succumbed to his injuries. A case under Sections 279,337 IPC has been registered. — TNS

100 kg poppy husk seized

Chandigarh, August 18
The Chandigarh police recovered 100 kg of poppy husk from a Kurali resident on Friday. Industrial Area SHO Malkit Singh said that the accused, identified as Jagtar Singh, resident of Allapur village in Kurali, was arrested near the CTU workshop in Industrial Area Phase II.

The police stated that the poppy husk was recovered from his truck. The accused revealed that he used to get poppy husk from Uttranchal and sell it in Punjab. He was produced in the court and sent to judicial custody. — TNS

Four vehicle thieves held

The police has claimed to have busted a gang of vehicle thieves and recovered a car and 10 two-wheelers from the possession of the accused.
Four gang members were arrested and a country-made pistol was also recovered from them.

DSP (Central) Ashish Kapoor said after witnessing a sudden spurt in the vehicle lifting incidents, a special team was constituted to nab the thieves.

The DSP said following a tip-off, a police party apprehended Balwinder Singh during a naka near cremation ground, Sector 25.

“His accomplice Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Maloya Colony, was also arrested with a stolen motorcycle," the DSP said.

He added that a country-made pistol and toy pistol were recovered from the accused.

The police Babar Khan a resident of Milk Dairy Complex, Maloya, and Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Milk Kheri village, Mohali district, were arrested from near Dadu Majra lights. A stolen motorcycle was recovered from them.

He said eight two-wheelers were recovered from different places.

The DSP said the accused, Balwinder Singh and Sandeep, used to steal and dismantle vehicles.

With the help of Babar Khan and Gurpreet Singh, they then used to sell those to scrap dealers.

The accused are on a police remand and a probe is on.

Male foetus found in hospital’s toilet

A five-month-old male foetus was found dumped today in a toilet of General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula. The police said the abandoned foetus had been dumped in the toilet.
This is the second incident of foetus being dumped in the toilet in the past six months.

A sweeper who had come in the morning to clean the toilet said that the sewerage system was blocked this morning. “When I checked, a foetus was found,” said Om Pal, a sweeper.

The sweepers then informed the doctors. “It is a male foetus which is about five-six months old. As soon as we came to know about it we called the police,” said Dr Sunil Gambhir.

The police reached the spot and the foetus was sent for a post-mortem examination. “ It is one-day old foetus. We have taken the DNA samples,” added Gambhir.

“We have CCTV cameras installed in the hospital, but as the foetus was found in the toilet, so nothing can be said right now. We will be getting the record of the gynecology department checked,” said Dr Rajiv Raju.

A DDR has been lodged at the Sector 5 police station. “We are investigating. Records from the gynecology department and OPD will be checked. We have taken the CCTV footage also,” said SHO Ajay Singh Rana.

Sons of Chief Secretary’s driver create ruckus

Mohali, August 18
The police has arrested two sons of the driver of Punjab's Chief Secretary for allegedly creating a ruckus in the Sector 70-71 area today.
DSP Rajinder Singh Sohal said the two youths, Devinder Kumar and Manjit, took away the official car of the Chief Secretary that their father had brought home. The Chief Secretary's driver, Suresh Kumar, is a resident of Sector 70.

On seeing the unruly behaviour of the youngsters, some passersby informed the police control room. When a PCR vehicle arrived at the scene, the two youths allegedly hit the police vehicle with their car, damaging the bumper. A scooter was also allegedly damaged by the youths.

The police finally arrested the two and impounded the official car. A case under Sections 353, 186, 279 and 283 of the IPC was registered against the youths. Sohal said that action would also be taken against Suresh Kumar in this regard.

Local lad in Davis Cup team

Tennis lovers, who have been awaiting the Davis Cup tie in the city, have another reason to cheer about. Sanam Singh, a local lawn tennis player, will represent the nation in the tournament from September 14 at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) courts, Sector 10.

Sanam started his career at the age of five, around the same time as the city hosted a world group Davis Cup tie against Australia in 1993. The hosts lost the tie 0-5. Nineteen years on, Sanam is gearing up to play a key role in the Indian outfit.

Sanam, a 24-year-old CLTA product, is in a good form and has done exceptionally well to catch eyes of the selection committee.

While talking to this correspondent, his mother, Roopa Singh, said: "It is indeed great news for Chandigarh as well as Sanam. He is already playing in the US and is in a good touch. We are expecting him to put up a good show here."

Sanam, who turned professional in 2004, has an ATP ranking of 415 as on August 13. Sanam along with Somdev Devvarman had won a gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou under the men's doubles category. India would strive to stay in the Asia/Oceania Group I when they play the Kiwis in Chandigarh on September 14-16.
