Energy unplugged
Arjun Vagale from the Jalebee Cartel, known for their Electronic Dance Music, is upbeat about the future of their kind of music…

Ideas run like Ferraris in his mind; there are no traffic lights, no signals to be followed, just one check point where all thoughts come to a standstill and it is called music zone! Arjun Vagale, of the four-member popular band Jalebee Cartel, channelises and directs all possible as well as impossible ideas through this zone. It is an end and means to everything.

In Chandigarh to perform for the first time at the Smirnoff Next, he talks with lightening speed. Music is something that runs in his blood; no matter how philosophical, the band member lives every word of it. Here, he is unplugged and uncut!

EDM, that’s my type

Jalebee Cartel, known for their Electronic Dance Music (EDM), has put the genre on the world map. Arjun, one of the four members, does laptop, mixing and electronics. Not to forget over 100 deejaying gigs he does in a year! “EDM is music produced for the night club or for an ambience that is based on dance and entertainment,” shares Arjun, excited about playing to the Chandigarh crowd for the first time in a club. Arjun would ideally want to take the genre to all possible small and big cities of the country. “EDM originated in clubs and it is nice to see it gaining popularity. Music festivals like Sunburn have given it a platform and it is no longer a niche genre to be enjoyed by a selected few.”

Young notes

Evolution is the key to survival; Arjun applies this to music and music production as well. “Music has to keep evolving for it to be entertaining. I get bored with the same notes, which is why I prefer music by young producers because they use new techniques and also have a fresh approach.” Old-timers are not ruled out! “They are good but they use certain set formulas, which gives a stagnated look to the notes,” shares Arjun, who is working on a couple of projects and ready to rock in upcoming music festivals.

The world has shrunk

Almost two years back when the band came up with their album One Point Nothing, Arjun probably thought Internet was not a big thing. “Internet has grown drastically and brought the world together. Same goes for music. Online music is a big hit, making it approachable to all music-lovers,” says Arjun, who loves travelling. Now if you are a David Guetta fan you can just check his music online and buy it! “It makes my job interesting, people want newer stuff and I can provide them the same.”

High school lessons

It is a creative art and you cannot shove it down somebody else’s throat. Arjun gets the point. He is running the only I Love Music academy in Delhi, dedicated to electronic dance music. “I tell students that we can’t teach them to be creative, we can only teach techniques like music production, deejaying and all that,” says this Bengaluru born and bred music freak married to a jazz music lover! “My wife doesn’t like my kind of music, she is more of a jazz girl and we have a wide variety of music because of this,” crackles Arjun.

Uncommon talent
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who has come up with a fantastic performance in Gangs Of Wasseypur 2, says he is the face of the common man
Jasmine Singh

You can easily mistake him for just about any other man, working nine-to-five, waiting patiently at the bus stop, buying vegetables, sitting in the balcony and smoking away to glory! But actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is not somebody who can be easily ignored. Certainly not after his bombastic role in Gangs Of Wasseypur 2.

While he was doing blink-and-miss and a little more evident roles in movies like Black Friday, New York, Paan Singh Tomar and Kahaani, Nawaz struck a sixer with Gangs Of Wasseypur 2. And now, you bet he cannot be passed off as yet another man standing on the bus stop!

One among us

Nawaz (as his friends call him), on the contrary, says, “Of course, I am still like any other common man, which is probably why people have accepted me as an actor.”

The word ‘actor’ doesn’t come easy to him. “I have struggled hard to reach where I am today. I passed-out from NSD, did many odd jobs, street theatre and small roles in films before I finally made to a big role in Kahaani and GOW,” shares Nawaz , who is enjoying every bit of success he is getting. All the same, he is wary of it too. “Nothing lasts forever, neither a good nor a bad time,” he tries to sound philosophical.

I have arrived

Nawaz had never thought even in his wildest dreams that the audiences would relate to him. “I am not a handsome, typical face of Bollywood. Besides, I never had this thought that I would do any lead role. In fact, I never had a second option. I was doing roles that came along without asking for more,” he says. He adds, “People have seen my work, now I can see a respect in their eyes. Bollywood has also accepted me in a good way.” We tell him that he has arrived, and he accepts the compliment with a warm thank you! “I think I am loving it,” the enthusiasm in Nawaz’s voice is evident.

Typically yours

From being a part of Cannes to now working on various other projects, Nawaz is careful about not getting typecast. “I have a very common face; I will look the same in every movie, which is why I have to be careful about the roles I do,” shares Nawaz, who plays Bipasha Basu’s husband in the upcoming movie Aatma.

“I have won an award for Dekh Indian Circus, which was showcased in New York, where I play a mute father who tries to fulfill the dreams of his child,” he adds.

Fan mail

Mention the growing female fans, and Nawaz takes a modest approach, “I think women like regular, simple guys also. And I just fit the bill here.”

simply nawaz

After passing out from the National School of Drama (NSD), Nawazuddin Siddiqui worked with street theatre in Delhi for the next four years, eventually shifting base to Mumbai in 2000, along with NSD batchmates Vijay Raaz and Rajpal Yadav. Nawazuddin made his Bollywood debut with a small role in Aamir Khan-starrer Sarfarosh. After moving to Mumbai he tried to get work in television serials, but nothing worked. Between 2002-05, he was largely out of work and lived in a flat he shared with four other people. In 2009, he appeared in a cameo role in the hit song emotional attyachar in the movie Dev D.

Verses of wisdom
When stress takes a toll on life, Ajanta Sinha seeks solace in Rabindra Sangeet
Mona

Ajanta Sinha Photo: Parvesh Chauhan This Rabindra Sangeet exponent takes no credit for self. It’s Tagore who gave such timeless classics that 150 years after his death, people are still singing and listening to his compositions is what Ajanta Sinha feels.

In Chandigarh, on Saturday for a performance at Monthly Baithak Programme organised by Pracheen Kala Kendra, Ajanta talks about her magical, musical world….

Brought up in a family environment that revered Tagore, she followed music right from her childhood. The formal initiation, however, happened after she got married, “Life and its pull and pressures take toll on all of us. In music I find a sanctuary.”

A journalist by profession and singer by passion, Ajanta swears by the beauty of Rabindra Sangeet, “It’s like Shiv-Gauri. The lyrics and the music beautifully complement each other.”

Another facet of Rabindra Sangeet that makes it well liked is probably the philosophy expressed in it. “There are innumerable lessons one can find in each composition,” says Ajanta citing Akash bhora surjo tara. This song based on nature not only talks of the vastness of nature but also its selfless character as well as the grace of God.

Ajanta has given performances not only in the different districts of West Bengal but also all over India and is touched by the response she has got. “When I sing, there is generally a mixed crowd. Tagore’s songs touch the educated and not-so-educated alike. Even the non-Bengali speaking crowd is mesmerised by the sheer beauty of it,” says Ajanta who already has four albums to her credit. What’s next? “I am happy in the present state, that I am able to sing and share this magnificent music with others is a matter of pride for me,” says Ajanta who enjoys her work and finds ultimate happiness in her singing. “Sometimes I feel bad that I am not able to give as much time to riyaaz as I want to, but over the decades I have never stopped it and never will,” says Ajanta with a resolve.

Act of faith
The son of famous Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans, Navraj Hans is all set to make a Bollywood debut with the movie Band Of Maharajas
Jasmine Singh

ACT ONE: Navraj Hans One out of every ten people who strike it big in Bollywood, credit everything to destiny. Navraj Hans, who makes his debut in Bollywood with his upcoming movie Band Of Maharajas, directed by Girish Malik, is yet another destiny’s child. Performing in Canada, a director notices him, offers him a movie, and there he is — on the sets to shoot for the film.

He laughs, “It sounds every bit a cliché, but this is how it is. I never wanted to be an actor and wasn’t even thinking on those lines,” says Navraj, the elder son of celebrated Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans. And well, when opportunity comes knocking at the door, as a practice, it should always be welcomed! “This is what I did. I gave some thought to it and decided to take the plunge,” he adds. Band Of Maharajas is a Bollywood flick based on three singers from Punjab, who become popular one day without being aware of it.

It is natural to ask whether the debutant actor realises that he has made it big? There is silence at the other end. “As I said, I never wanted to act. My younger brother Yuvraj is already doing Punjabi films. It was only after I started working for the film, taking acting, dancing and fight lessons that I realised I was there,” says Navraj.

So, no diction classes for this Punjabi? “Of course I was taking lessons in Hindi, all the same Band Of Maharajas requires me to talk in Punjabi-Hindi accent, which is a good thing.” Adjusting to the ways of Mumbai, Navraj feels blessed to be living decently in a city that is the Mecca for strugglers in Bollywood. “I am thankful that I didn’t have to worry about money, food and shelter. I still struggled; it took me a long time to find my feet,” he says. Now that he has taken his first big step, Navraj is open to both Punjabi and Hindi films. “I know that it is not the tag of actor that is important, I want to do meaningful roles. It is not the length that is important. I still can’t deny that every performer wants to act in a lead role,” he stresses on the last line.

Music is his first love and Navraj will pursue it with complete dedication. “I am a singer first; it is the food for my soul. I feel incomplete if I don’t sing even for a single day,” Navraj who takes his father’s advice pretty seriously says. “He is a pillar of strength for me and I am glad to make him proud.”

A ride, a journey
A bike ride is a wonderful experience for most people and if the machine happens to be a Harley Davidson, nothing beats the feeling…
Manpriya Singh

To soak in the sound and sight of fifty thousand bikes at one go is quite an experience! And if the bike happens to be a Harley Davidson, the sight becomes a spectacle. Harpreet Sandhu, lawyer, Panjab and Haryana High Court, tries to put into words the experience called Harley Davidson, Europe 2012 Rally at Rudesheim, Germany. Driving a Harley Davidson D, even on the parallel road, was quite an experience.

“Around June, I just happened to be at the place while vacationing with my wife. To be honest, I neither owned a bike nor was a HD fanatic.” That was till this happened. “It was almost a dream come true, especially for a guy from Punjab.” What strikes him first and foremost is something beyond the bike. “It is so well-organised. After a gap of every four to five thousand bikes, there was a police car for safety. They were there for the safety of people on the road.”

The precaution and passion goes hand in hand! “People all around Europe gather there to cheer up. Anybody on the road could view and motivate the participants.” Add to it the champagne toasts doing the rounds! He adds, “Imagine fifty thousand different models, colour and shapes of a single brand.”

The ones he remembers are loud and screaming “purple, green, magenta”, apart from the obvious reds and yellows. “There was also this multi-coloured bike.” It might still be many years before we replicate the passion and culture, but as of now he’s still high on the Harley!

Collars up
The autumn & winter collection is all about bright hues, ornate fabrics and collars in all forms and sizes
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

'Sales' are perhaps the biggest indicator of a new fashion line. And for fashionistas who have their shopping bags ready for a brand new wardrobe, the autumn/winter collection is all about shapes, ornate fabrics, embellishments, bright hues, swathe of tweed, some Perspex heels and a pair of what we're now calling investment trousers.

And yes, collars are going to peep out in every form, be it in a top, shirt, sweater or even a dress. But one thing that we forgot to mention is - wear your trousers (and even the jeans) a little shorter.

"In short, you can play safe with shapes—utilitarian, military-inspired and plenty covered up. For fabrics we will witness velvet, jacquard, lace, damask and lot of embellishment, so don't hold back," says fashion designer Sabah Khan, who has won accolades for her fashion line at LFW.

Collars have been in trend for the last few seasons and they're set to be huge in autumn/winter 2012. "Collars are definitely setting the stage for the autumn collection whether they're embe lished, detached or in contrasting colours," says Divya Kapoor from Samsaara.

She adds, "Other than this we will see a stilt of colour and detailing this autumn/winter. Emphasis is on embellishment whether it is with scarves, footwear or a bag."

Well, with Lakme Fashion Week going on a number of new trends have been thrown in. And who knew doodling could become a fashion statement, till Aartivijay Gupta's collection showcased shift dresses and trench coats in plain white cloth with black doodles. "Layered look comes back every season but this time it's here to stay, so toughen your look with structured jackets, epaulettes and gold buttons," says ace designer Anju Modi. In colours she says, "It's going to be reds, charcoal, ivory and teal blue.”

Considering the comeback of the colour red, even the New York designers have deemed the red dress as a must have. Old-fashioned glamour has also hit the runways and so has the 'geek' look with thick-rimmed specs, buttoned up collars and preppy layers.

Fashion forecast

  • Collars are going to peep out in every form, be it in a top, shirt, sweater or even a dress.
  • We will se a stilt of colour and detailing this autumn/winter with emphasis on embellishment.
  • Layered look comes back every season, but this time it's here to stay so toughen your look with structured jackets, epaulettes and gold buttons.
  • 'Geek is chic again' look will rule, with thick-rimmed specs, buttoned up collars and preppy layers.
  • Minimal tailoring and boxy white jackets will rule this season.

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension…

Folks wearing body hugging clothes even though it does not suit them.

Your take on accessories?

Only Alexander Mcqueen!

I was intimidated by SRK: Katrina

King-size fear: Katrina Kaif Actress Katrina Kaif, who will be seen opposite Shahrukh Khan for the first time in Yash Chopra's next film, says she was intimidated by the superstar but later found him to be very dedicated and helpful.

"With regards to Shahrukh, I did not know him that well at all. I would have said five words to him in my entire life. With SRK, who is a superstar, I have worked this year, after being in the industry for nine years," Katrina said.

"You constantly see that person on TV, in media, movies and everywhere. So for me a little sense of intimidation was there when you are actually in front of him… which I later found funny," she said.

Both are paired opposite each other in the untitled film directed by Yash Chopra. The film also features Anushka Sharma in a pivotal role.

The film, believed to be a love triangle, marks the return of Yash Chopra as a director after a gap of eight years, his last film being Veer Zaara in 2004. After having started working with King Khan, the 28-year-old actress is all praise for him. — PTI

THE YEAR AHEAD
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is August 12...

This birthday is also a good day to follow religious and spiritual interests. Being born on the 12th day of August is likely to add a good bit of vitality to your life. You are subject to rapid ups and downs. The energy of three allows you to bounce back rapidly from setbacks, physical or mental. There is a restlessness in your nature, but you seem to be able to portray an easygoing attitude.

Do not overspend. Health condition of a family member will cause some stress. You should learn some lessons from your defeats. If you run from a situation—it will follow you in the worst possible way.

You tend to be really hard on yourself when you fall short of your goals. The secret to your ultimate success is to be more forgiving. By allowing yourself an occasional slip, it will be easier to recommit to a self-improvement programme.

You want to improve yourself by learning a new skill or exploring a new territory. Unfortunately, a friend or relative needs you to stay close to home. You shouldn't have to put your dreams on hold just because disaster has struck. By being flexible and thinking outside of the box, you can get the stimulation you crave without betraying others. And over the next couple of days, you're high powered and having fun if the stars have their say.

You'll find the right solution at the right moment; you'll forget past sorrows. If you are an employee, hitches in relationships with your superiors may be due to your perfectionist attitude.

You yearn for that something new, that something exciting, and this period might just grant you your wish. Don't take too drastic action, but feel free to explore new areas and let your imagination run wild with different possibilities.

You seemed to be everyone's friend and may end up exhausted but happy. Addressing practical needs may drain your wallet. Invitations for the family 'as a whole' are likely and may involve travel.  Financial matters are average now. Love and creativity are under transformation. Work and health could be a little demanding now.

Mood: Geared toward 'co ventures' in both business and personal. Compatible signs: Aries, Leo. Lucky colours: Gold & orange. Lucky days: Wednesday and Friday. Lucky numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
