Being the change, actually
Social services today are going beyond donating funds. Young blood takes pride in attaching themselves to voluntary services. We find out why?
Vasudha Gupta

Torch bearers: Megha Goel, Jasmeet Kaur, Neha Kaushal

The prime factor of judging a student’s calibre today boils down to the fat pay package and the brand of the MNC they plan to move to. There are very few who are willing to give up the power-packed jobs today and work in the field of social service. Increasingly a lot of youngsters are seen moving towards charity and committing themselves to voluntary service. We chat up with a few and find out how they got motivated into it.

Guiding light
Manveen Kaur

The passion to work for children pulled Neha Kaushal into working for the Guild for Service, an NGO working for women empowerment. A part of the gender resource team, Neha spent considerable time at the Maadham in Vrindavan under the programme. “It was the widow home the NGO looked after,” she shares. Having spent six weeks working for the NGO, Neha has come back a changed person. “The most surprising aspect of the training was that it’s not only women who suffer, also men,” she says. Neha witnessed several men reach a saturation point. “Several women I ran into at Maadham were abandoned by their own children. It’s the worst form of life when your own family abandons you,” says Neha, who worked as a legal advisor in the NGO.

At a young age of 22, this Master’s student has seen the ground realities of life. “It was watching the real India, which hides behind the pretty face projected by the politicians. It’s not as beautiful,” she adds. If it helps a few to stand up on their own two feet, it helps the other bringing a level of satisfaction.

Working with the Global Environment Concern since the last six months, Manveen has been teaching 60 students from underprivileged backgrounds. The NGO is involved in environment protection and education. “I really want to give back to the society, one way or the other,” she says. Working this way rather than going on a wild goose chase in social service brings out a different Manveen. “It is essentially being very interactive with children,” she smiles. Manveen’s evening sessions, in association with the British School, is also making her a better teacher each day.

“You get one life. Each individual should work for a social cause,” Megha Goel says. All of 23, she joined Art of Living and soon she attached herself with Sewa. “We were in Barabanki, in Lucknow, and collected old clothes, necessities for the people there,” she adds. It was her sister, a clinical psychologist who motivated her to join the NGO. Surely, it has made her more humble. “I have started looking forward to life now,” she smiles. As highlighted in Satyamev Jayate’s recent episode on the atrocities on the elderly, a city-based NGO, Dadadadi, is helping protect the interest of the old. Jasmeet Kaur (26) has been an active part of the NGO and is doing all that she can to keep the elderly in high spirits. “It’s sad, but many children are deserting their parents.” For us, it is all about trying to bridge the gap and interacting with them, so that their isolation reduces,” she says.

There are several who need help and these youngsters are rising to the occasion. Hope they will become role models for those who think like them!

The reason behind

One thing is certain that social services shine on the resume. Several universities aboard consider it an integral factor while assessing the application forms. So is it only for credits that the youth attach themselves with NGOs or are they really inclined towards helping the society. Sushma Gupta, school administrator of the British School shares her point of view on the subject. “It’s a fine mix of both,” she says. Having come across several youth who are seriously not concerned and a few who genuinely care. “There are several who change once they get into social service, though for admissions purpose initially,” she adds.

Bharatnatyam dancer, Navtej Singh Johar comes to city again with his dance-drama
Vivek Gupta

play on: Navtej Singh Johar (extreme left)

For the lovers of both dance and theatre, Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi brings a premier show of a dance-drama titled, Charumathi Claire Singh to be presented by Navtej Singh Johar, a renowned Bharatnatyam dancer, on July 31 evening at Tagore Theatre, sector 18, Chandigarh.

Charumathi Claire Singh weaves two narratives, one inspired by The Maids, a play by Jean Genet in which two maids engage in a daily ritual of impersonating their madam, while at the same time are plotting to kill her, and the other based on a generic life-narrativeof the devadasis, or ‘maids of the Gods,’ who were dedicated to serve in the temples and remained the main repositories of dance and music for over centuries in South India.

The play freely inter-mixes contexts and characters. It challenges the possibility of self-forgetfulness, a pre-requisite for transformation. It also examines the choices male dancers make while taking up classical dance today. As we all know, Navtej Johar is a Bharatanatyam exponent and a choreographer, whose work is unique. His work freely traverses between the traditional and the avant-garde.

Johar has performed at prestigious venues all over the world and has done extensive work with several prominent international companies, including The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Co. and The Chandralekha Group.

Entry is by passes. One can collect passes from Tagore theatre and from Sangeet Natak Academy office in sector 34 state library.

All time wonder
Team up with leggings, palazzos or denims, tunics never seem to go out of fashion
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

India has contributed much to the global fashion scene. From paisleys, ikat and batik, to the sari drape, churidaar and off late the dhoti elements, there have been influences in embellishments, prints and dyeing techniques, but out of all tunics have been a sheer versatility. Seen in almost all fashion collections, they are for now a never-dying fashion trend and have the quality to fit any body type.

With few counterparts, which can match the test of time, tunics have been in fashion for more than two years now. “Tunic is still a work in progress. It is one fashion trend that fails to go out of fashion,” says designer Simple Kaur. She adds, “From designer shows in Milan to Lakme Fashion Week tunics have been showcased everywhere. The latest ones come in relaxed shapes and earthy palette in kaftan cuts. A versatile piece of clothing tunics look cool with pullovers, casual-fitted trousers and sneakers too gel well with it. Above all this is one piece of clothing that can pass of as casual as-well-as semi-formal wear.”

Well, making waves nationally and internationally this wispy, light and flowing piece of clothing was initially found in fabrics like cotton but today we see it being created in crisp crepes, georgettes, silks, tissues and even chiffons. Plus a lot of contemporary styling has gone in making it an Indo-western wear.

“Tunics come in all designs and patterns and they have become a fashion essential in any wardrobe,” says Seema Sharma from Impressions sector 19. She adds, “Considering that it fits all body types and hides the flab tunics are more about cuts and styles these days. From asymmetrical to sharp edges we see very less of work on tunics. Rather it is a play of colours and motifs that make tunic a dress for all occasions.”
Talking trends we have seen seventies-inspired flares, palazzos, ultra-wide-leg trousers, baggy boyfriend jeans and umpteen styles of pants cycle in and out of fashion but tunic has remained to be a favourite with all. And for the Fall, designers are advocating another new silhouette. Pants clipped just above the ankle with hip-grazing tunics. “There is no denying the fact that tunics have become a fashion essential. It’s a never-say-no fashion statement that spreads across the globe. A big hit, off late girls are wearing tunics as dresses and for others who are not comfortable showing legs they are teaming it up with stockings, leggings, palazzos, jeans. And the best thing about tunics is it flatters any body type and gives some geometry to the body,” says Geet Sethi, a consultant head training, Espirit, India. So, ladies bag some tunics for a chic look!

Tunic guide

  • Clean and classy silhouettes with a futuristic edge are the latest trend in tunics.
  • From eye catching hues to earthy tones, tunics even look good in paler tones like powder pink, sunflower yellow, crisp coral, frosty blue and peppermint green.
  • Tunic is one garment that hides body flab, so it suit’s almost all body types.
  • A versatile piece of clothing tunics look cool with pullovers, casual-fitted trousers and sneakers too gel well with it.
  • For the ‘Fall’, designers are advocating another new silhouette. Pants clipped just above the ankle with hip-grazing tunics.

Dream designs
Ashima Batish

She is one designer who loves to experiment. Anupamaa Dayal’s Sarini, a concept of sari draped around shorts affirms her different designing sensibilities. She wasn’t really applauded for her out-of-the-box idea. But then she has been showcasing her collection at the Paris Fashion Week, which is quite an achievement. She shares her idea of fashion for the season.

What’s in: Lot of separates, with which I mean teaming up various outfits, like a skirt with a shirt and a scarf or a shirt with shorts and a half sleeve jacket. It’s time to experiment with the waistline. Go in for peplums, accentuate your slim waist. Wear dresses that are waist specific—low or high waist. As for fabrics, lots of chiffon will be used. Designs that need imagination, experimentation and are original will be popular with the fashion followers.

What’s out: One piece dresses should be given some rest for sometime, which also includes jumpsuits. Anything that reduces the chances of adding layers to clothes is out for sure.

Colour couture: There is for sure a resurgence of blues. As of now, lighter hues of blues are in, later in winters the shift will be made to darker, deeper ones. For example, as of now, jewel tones of blue are the best bet. In winters, shift to Indigo. Indians love colours, so even yellow will be a hit in winters.

Dressed to the nines: Sonam Kapoor has a made a name for herself as a fashion icon. But I still believe the winner is Deepika Padukone. She has a lot of potential; she can experiment really well with her looks. She is blessed with a dream body, which sports ethnic and Western equally well.

Leading in fashion: Coco Chanel changed the face of the fashion industry, with her contemporary designs. She liberated women from the shackles of what men thought women should wear. Party couture: Replace the little black dress with a sizzling red one. It will for sure look hotter and Indians should never shy away from colours.

On the Indian fashion industry: Our fashion industry is evolving with each day. We are going more international, getting more clients from all over the world. All we now need is a bit of government support, so that we can come at par with the well-established industries of the West.

GET PHYSICAL
Back up
Renu Sabberwal

There are many asanas giving a twist to the spinal column. Among these, Matsyendrasana is considered the most effective one. Matsyendrasana, the half spinal twist, is ninth in the sequence of 12 basic postures of hatha yoga. It benefits the posture in a big way, but the most important is that the entire length of the spine receives a lateral twist in both directions - first to the left and then to the right through this asana.

Technique of attaining the posture

Sit on the floor with both the legs stretched out in front, with some distance between them.

Fold the left leg at the knee and bring the knee near the chest. Keeping the right leg on the floor, fold it at the knee. With the help of the hands, draw the right heel along the floor towards the perineum and fix it there. In order to prevent the shifting of the heel from that position turn the right toe outward.

Now, without moving the left buttock, take the left ankle near the right knee with the help of right hand. Place the left sole on the floor on the outer side of the right knee. With this, the left knee will come over to the right side near the armpit. As you do this, give support to the right foot with your left hand. After this pressing the left knee with the left hand, bring it towards the right armpit. Simultaneously, take the right armpit towards the left side.

Now pressing the left knee gently into the right armpit straighten the right hand. Hook the left big toe with the right hand index finger.

Turn your face to the left, and keep left hand on the floor near the right buttock. Twist the upper portion of the body to the left side. Breathe normal during the asana.

Releasing of asana.

Take away the left palm. Turn the face to the front. Pressing the left thigh with the left hand; unlock the left knee, below the right armpit. Straighten the right leg and then the left leg to assume the starting position.

Repeat the same sequence of operation on the opposite side to give twist to the upper body to the right side. Thus it makes the complete round of matsyendrasdana. Maintain this posture for five to ten counts. You can do two rounds of this practice.

Benefits

  • It increases flexibility in each vertebrae of the spine, from the base of the spine through the neck.
  • It stretches the back muscles and hips.
  • Massages the abdominal organs, helping to relieve constipation.
  • Breathing becomes more rapid that speeds up circulation and creates an aerobic effect.
  • This brings more blood flow to the spine Improves the lung capacity.

Mentally stronger

  • Brings peace of mind
  • Helps to cure nervous disorders

Culinary king
Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi wishes to get innovative with healthy ingredients
Vasudha Gupta

CHEF’S DELIGHT: Harpal Singh Sokhi

It is the simple basic ingredient used in all forms of cooking. But, not many must be aware that it was this simple ingredient that paved way for India’s revolution. A part of several common movie dialogues, it gives maximum body to the meal. It’s salt! Bringing the magic of salt carefully shaken and stirred with a song, Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi, comes to Chandigarh.

Being a North Indian, Harpal was just waiting for the right opportunity to come here and finally found it. “It has been overwhelming to see the response my show, Turban Tarka on Food Food has got,” he says. It is the simple format of display, with a tinge of humour and energy which has changed the essence of the show. “It’s good to know how people just love to watch the show,” he adds. And of course, his song Namak Shamak Namak Shamak Daal Dete hain, has a story of its own. Being a cheerful person himself, Harpal wanted to introduce the fun element in his show. “If salt is missing, all other ingredients in the dish become invalid. Hence, the song,” he smiles.

The show is also busy bringing families together. The song surely has stormed a revolution on the dining tables across India. “The basic idea of food is also to bring families together,” he says. It is his innovation, not only in cooking but in his show which is adding the right flavour. “My idea is to get innovative with ingredients and provide alternatives to the ingredients,” he says.

Keeping everything else aside, the fact that women are getting choosy with vegetables bothers Harpal. “The level of nutrition among children is reducing. It’s very important today to camouflage health and give it to the child,” he says. Believing in a wholesome diet, Harpal’s way of cooking a white pumpkin will definitely make a child drool and want for more.

Inspired out of watching his father cook on Sundays, it was this that laid the foundation of Harapal’s cooking genius. Trained under names like Ustad Habib Pasha and Begum Mumtaz Khan, Harpal’s niche is Hydrabadi food. Creator of Ayurveda cuisine, Harpal is busy focusing on creating food according to the weather and health. “Our parents and grandparents used to practise it very well,” he says. Like, no one would really tell you that leafy vegetables should be avoided in rainy season. “No one reacts very well to such statements,” he adds. With Indian food getting reinvented worldwide, Harpal is glad that Indian food continues to hold international fancy as well. With a huge digital presence, Harpal adds chillies and spices to make some gastronomic meals.

Find a happy you

Be Positive! Haven’t we heard that one too many times? I being a great propagator of these words myself would say that it is perhaps one of the greatest ways of letting go of stress. Positive psychology research has found, we do have quite a bit of ‘wiggle room’ and can alter our habitual thought patterns by actively changing the way we choose to see things. If we challenge negative thinking patterns and replace them with more positive patterns, it becomes our habit and we can create a new set point for happiness

The big five

Everyone is born with a ‘set point’ for some traits which are called the big five in psychology: openness, agreeableness, extroversion, conscientiousness and neuroticism. Racing thoughts always constantly lead to physical tension as well when you are under the onslaught of stress, it’s hard not to think about it. You have to target ways and means to find the peace within

Positive attitude

Optimism and laughter while enjoyable in their own right bring benefits like health, longevity and a decrease in stress. A positive attitude can be cultivated meaning if you by habit don’t look at the brighter side of life you can change it. Just make the effort to cultivate the attitude that can bring in greater health, happier relationships and more luck in life compared to what you seem to get with a grouchy disposition.

Learning experiences

Hardships are seen as learning experience by optimists and even the most miserable day has a promise of ‘tomorrow will be better’. If you always see the brighter side you may experience more positive events in your life than others. Find yourself less stressed and even enjoy greater health benefits.

Better health

In a study of 99 students at Harvard University it was found that those who were optimists at 25 years of age were significantly healthier at ages 45 and 60 than those who were pessimists. Other research also shows that pessimists have a greater risk of getting sick when they reach adulthood and middle age.

Greater achievement

Seligman has also analysed the explanatory styles of sports teams and found that most optimistic teams created more synergy, performed better than the pessimistic ones. Pessimists are more vulnerable to defeat.

Persistence pays

Optimists don’t give up easily as pessimists do and are therefore more likely to achieve success. Donald Trump went bankrupt several times but persisted and turned his failure into millions.

Emotional health

In a study of clinically depressed patients it was discovered that 12 weeks of cognitive therapy, meaning reframing a persons thought process worked better than drugs. Patients with this training could handle setbacks better.

Long life

When one lives a life with a positive attitude you naturally increase your life span as this has a direct relationship with you stress levels.

Less stress

Optimists tend to experience less stress than realists. They believe in themselves and their abilities. Expect good things to happen and see negative events as minor setbacks to be easily overcome and view positive events as further evidence of good things to come.

Happening Bollywood debut…

Hands full: Evelyn Sharma

The half-Indian half-German Evelyn Sharma, who made news as Bollywood's latest fashionista sometime ago, seems to be emerging the first foreigner after Katrina Kaif to get a good grip on Bollywood.

The newbie hasn’t even completed a year in the industry yet, but has just tucked her fifth film in her over-flowing kitty this week. Evelyn will now also be seen playing a lead with Vicky Donor star Ayushmann Khurrana, Delhi Belly fame Kunal Roy Kapur and newcomer Pooja Salvi in Rohan Sippy’s next!

When Sippy offered Evelyn “a beautiful role” with her friend and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani co-star Kunal Roy Kapur; she did not hesitate a bit and jumped on board with enthusiasm.

“Having shot for four movies, my acting and especially my Hindi diction, have improved a lot,” quips the girl, who in spite of her half-foreign origins, dubs for herself.

Evelyn will be seen making her debut with a funky role in the comedy From Sydney With Love releasing in the first week of August. Directed by veteran filmmaker Pramod Chakravorty’s grandson Prateek Chakravorty, the film’s songs and promos have already gained good popularity with the youth.

The girl is also working hard towards her first full-length lead in T-Series’ next tentatively titled Class of 2013. She plays a glamorous dream girl in the movie, which happens to be the directorial debut of Super Cassettes icon Bhushan Kumar’s enterprising wife Divya Khosla Kumar. That apart, Evelyn plays a very spiritual girl opposite Prateik Babbar in Issaq and a sexy ditz in Ayan Mukerji’s Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani; the Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer under Karan Johar’s banner Dharma Productions.

Theron angry with Stewart
Charlize Theron is miffed with Kristen Stewart over her affair with director Rupert Sanders

Charlize Theron is reportedly angry with her Snow White co-star Kristen Stewart over her affair with director Rupert Sanders. Theron, who played the evil queen opposite Stewart's Snow White, is a good friend of Sanders' wife Liberty Ross.

The actress apparently feels betrayed by Stewart as she had become quite close with her during the shooting of the movie. "Charlize is absolutely fuming with Kristen for having an affair with Rupert. She is very tight with Liberty, has often socialised with the family over dinner, and cannot believe Kristin has done this," a source said. Stewart, 22, issued a public apology this week after her affair became public. Sanders, who has two children with Ross, followed suit.

The Twilight actress is reportedly struggling to save her relationship with Robert Pattinson.

"This momentary indiscretion has jeopardised the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry," Stewart had said in her statement. — PTI

Mélange of movies

The 12th Osian’s Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema, heralded the start of a new era by highlighting freedom of creative thought and expression along with social objectives as its hallmark.

As a mark of this tribute to creative thought, the Lifetime Achievement Award named after the Festival’s founder Aruna Vasudev was presented to renowned Egyptian critic Samir Farid.

The 12th Osian’s Cinefan Film Festival being held from July 27 to August 5 will screen as many as 175 films from around 38 countries from India, Asia and the Arab world. It will have 15 World premieres, 8 International premieres, 104 Indian premieres, and 13 Asian premieres. The screenings include 61 shorts.

The event began with a tribute to India’s first superstar Rajesh Khanna who passed away recently with the showing of clips from some of his best films including popular song sequences.

Samir Farid, accepting the award as ‘a great honour from a great country’, said he loved cinema and film criticism was an expression of this. He noted that Egypt had been facing bad times, and the arts were in danger in the hands of Islamic fanatics. But he said he would continue to fight for creative freedom as religion and art were two different things.

Steamy scenes

This question was raised by a journalist who thought that the RA.One actor’s chemistry with the soon-to-be begum was too steamy for the Nawab’s comfort…

There is no doubt that Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine belongs to his leading lady, Kareena Kapoor. But as Arjun Rampal said at the trailer launch, “A heroine is incomplete without a hero.” Highlights of Kareena’s film include the intimate scenes with her costars, Arjun and Randeep Hooda. Arjun was asked about his experience of doing these sequences with Bebo. He said, “Don’t remind me of such moments. They were very wonderful moments. They will stay with me for the rest of my life,” he said jokingly.

So did he get any threatening calls from a certain somebody, he was asked? Obviously, ‘somebody’ would be Kareena’s fiancé Saif Ali Khan. “Saif and I are like a band of bandits. We have respect for each other and he knows I am a gentleman, so no calls were made,” was his sporting reply.

Bond’s retro feel

A scent inspired by the James Bond series, titled James Bond 007, is being released in September ahead of Skyfall, the 23rd movie in the British spy franchise.

The James Bond aftershave is inspired by the '60s and in addition to notes of apple and sandalwood, it will have a retro feel.

Bill Brace, vice president of fashion brands for P&G Prestige, which is housing the fragrance, said "The aromatic feugere fragrance family came to prominence in the 60s - it was unmistakably masculine - mossy and ferny.

"But that was a while ago, so we wanted to move it on and give it a much more modern and sophisticated shell, which is why there's fresh apple, cardamom, sandalwood and vetiver."

Although currently marketed for men, a women's perfume may also be in the works. —PTI
