108 Service organises traffic awareness campaign

Ziqitza Healthcare Limited (ZHL), which operates “Dial 108 in emergency ambulance service” in Punjab has organised a public awareness campaign in association with the Punjab traffic police yesterday at the Zirakpur-Delhi highway. SMO, Dr Daler Singh Multani, flagged off the rally, in which 108 ambulance service with its four ambulances and crew travelled from Zirakpur towards the national highway and later stationed at the Dappar toll plaza near Lalru for the entire day.

Traffic flowing through the toll plaza was made aware about the traffic safety rules and first-aid inputs by the 108 crew, along with volunteers. The ZHL also distributed 108 awareness car stickers.

ZHL senior manager Tarun Verma said the motive to organise such an initiative was to spread awareness about “Dial 108 emergency ambulance service” with an idea to equip people travelling on busy roads with first-aid techniques and important emergency contact number.

College felicitated with World Education Summit Award 2012

Swami Parmanand Group of Colleges, Lalru, has been felicitated with World Education Summit 2012 award. This is the second time the institute has won the award.

The main organisers of the award were AICTE, New Delhi, along with Elets Technomedia Pvt Ltd, Director General of Employment & Training, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, New Delhi, the National Institute of Advance Studies and UNESCO. The trophy was awarded to YK Mittal, treasurer of Swami Parmanand Group of Colleges, in a ceremony held at the Le Meridien Hotel, New Delhi.

Subodh Kant Sahay, Cabinet Minister for Tourism (Government of India) was the chief guest. Vice-Chancellor, Gurukul Vidyapeeth, Haridwar, and Director, IIM-Ahmedabad, were also present on the occasion.

The title of the project on which the award was given was “Best Innovative Initiative in Technologies for Higher Technical Education”. It aims at imparting easy, effective and economic education to youth from all over India, especially the rural youth, women and economically weaker sections of the society by making them technically compatible with the help of technologies like VOIP, Wi-Fi, high speed internet facilities and smart class rooms.

School organises 'Green Day' to encourage healthy diet among children

In order to inculcate good eating habits among the tiny tots of pre-primary section and to raise their interest towards green leafy vegetables, DAV Public School, Patiala, today organised 'Green Day' on its premises. '

Go Green for Life' was the theme of today’s activity. About 450 kids dressed up in different shades of green were quite excited about this fun filled activity. Different events, such as colouring, and printing using vegetables were organised in the classes.

Kids, with the help of class-teachers, prepared charts conveying the message “Eat Healthy to Stay Healthy”. Later, the kids relished the green food and fruits brought by them in their lunch boxes as well.

Teachers also motivated the students to eat green vegetables and fruits. They were told about the importance of eating healthy food and were advised to stay away from junk food.

The importance of trees and plants for good environment and healthy life was also highlighted. Students of classes nursery to UKG visited the fruit and vegetable market put up by the teachers in the school corridor

Principal SR Prabhakar also joined the tiny tots in their venture.

He said that as root is the most important part of a plant, similarly childhood is the most important stage of human life. Habits inculcated at this stage are going to last long and therefore developing their interest in healthy food and healthy life at this tender stage is the best gift for them.

He also appreciated the efforts of pre-primary teachers. Inderbir Marya, co-ordinator, pre-primary wing presented the vote of thanks.

3-yr jail for liquidator

The CBI Court today awarded three years' imprisonment to a former liquidator of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Ashish Vajpayee, in a disproportionate assets case. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.

After pronouncing the verdict, the court also granted bail to Vajpayee and gave two months' time to him for filing an appeal against the order.

The accused, who was attached to the Punjab and Haryana High Court at the time of his arrest, was held guilty of amassing assets worth Rs 1.47 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income during his tenure in 2006. The CBI had registered the disproportionate assets case against him on August 7, 2006.

The CBI had told the court that Vajpayee joined the Registrar of Companies on January 16, 1989, as Junior Technical Assistant and he was found in possession of assets worth Rs 1,47,15,188 disproportionate to his known sources of income in May, 2006. The worth of his assets was 354 per cent more than his income.

The prosecution had stated that a total of Rs 1.47 crore was seized from his residence at Sector 27 and his bank lockers in Chandigarh, Nagpur and Chhattisgarh (his hometown).

The CBI disclosed before the court that Rs 30.50 lakh was seized from his locker in Central Bank, Sector 17, and about Rs 7 lakh was seized from his residence in Sector 27.

Vajpayee was also found in possession of FDRs, Kisan Vikas Patras, jewellery and a Honda City car worth Rs 35 lakh besides a piece of land in Kharar and two flats and one piece of land in Raipur. The official liquidator was also accused of favouring private firms while auctioning property under liquidation.

Bribery case
2-yr jail to I-T officer

In a major development in the income tax (I-T) officer bribery case, the CBI court announced two years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15,000 to the officer today.

The case had come up for hearing today as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had to announce the quantum of punishment for income tax officer SK Verma.

Verma was convicted by the CBI special court on Thursday for accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh. The CBI special court had convicted SK Verma for accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from a businessman, Surinder Panwar, at Yamunanagar for settling his income tax issue.

The case dates back to June 23, 2006, when the investigating agency had caught SK Verma accepting the bribe from Panwar. It was when Panwar contacted Verma regarding the issue, the former reportedly demanded Rs 25 lakh. Thereafter, Panwar contacted the Chandigarh branch of the CBI and a team under Jai Singh was constituted.

Lawyer held taking bribe from NRI

CBI today arrested Harvinder Behal, an advocate from Ludhiana, while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 1.50 lakh from an NRI on the pretext of getting his loan of Rs 68 lakh sanctioned from Andhra Bank, Sector 17.

Behal was arrested near Mehafil hotel at Sector 17 here. The role of a direction general manager (DGM) of Andhra Bank is also being investigation in this bribe case.

The NRI, who recently returned from USA, had applied for a loan for his mushroom project coming up in Ropar

CBI sources said some of the bank officials had been delaying approval to the loan for a long time. Behal was known to certain officials of Andhra Bank.

Five arrested for bank fraud

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Chandigarh police claims to have busted a gang which opened bank accounts on fake documents and deposited cheques stolen from drop boxes in these accounts. Five members of the gang have been arrested.

Chandigarh SSP Naunihal Singh said SIT had the information that a gang was preparing fake identity cards, driver's licenses, Adhar cards, voter ID cards in order to open fake bank accounts. "The suspects, after stealing cheques, would scan them and change the persons' names and amount in order to deposit them in their fake accounts. As soon the amount got transferred to their accounts they would withdraw the money," SSP said.

The suspects have been identified as Pawan Gossain, Deepak, Vikas Sharma, Ajay Krunar and Narender.

Pawan Gossain, a resident of Sector 24, who was working as a loan advisor in a company at Swastik Vihar, Panchkula. He had opened a fake account in the name of Ram Kumar in the Axis Bank and encashed a number of cheques.

Deepak of Sector 24 is an insurance agent who operated an office in the name of DN Kangra Corporation 2, MDC, Sector-5, Panchkula. Deepak and Pawan encashed cheques worth Rs 1.30 lakh through fake accounts.

Vikas Sharma of Sector 47 and Ajay Krunar of Sector 21 worked as operator in Sarv Sikashya Abhiyan. Narender of Sector 25 worked as a business development executive in Axis Bank, NAC, Mani Majra, Chandigarh. He, in connivance with the four suspects, opened fake accounts and also prepared fake verification reports.

They had done at least 17 fake transactions involving Rs 3.70 lakh.

4 POs held

Mohali, July 28
The Mohali police today claimed to have arrested four criminals, namely Harjit Singh, Lucky, Vinod Kumar and Dinesh Kumar, who were declared as proclaimed offenders (POs) in different cases by the courts here.

Lucky and Vinod Kumar, both residents of Sector 52, Chandigarh, were facing different cases under the Gambling Act in the Phase XI police station and Phase I police station, respectively.

Harjit Singh, a resident of Sector 42, had jumped his bail in the case of rash driving and damage in November 2009, while Dinesh Kumar, a resident of Kumbra village, was declared proclaimed offender in February this year in the narcotics case. — TNS

1 held with bottles of country liquor

The Mohali police arrested two miscreants, Chander Shekhar and Saddam, in two different cases today.

DSP DS Mann said Chander Shekhar, a resident of Amb Sahib Colony, Phase XI, has been arrested on the charges of possessing 48 bottles of country liquor, while Saddam has been nabbed for selling pirated CDs of music and movies. — TNS

JP Atray cricket meet from Sept 15

The 19th edition of the All-India JP Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament for Pearls Trophy will be held from September 15 to 25 at the PCA Stadium, Mohali; Sector-16 Cricket Stadium, Chandigarh; Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium, Sector 3, Panchkula; LIC Cricket Academy, GMHS, Sector 26, Chandigarh; St John School, Sector 26, Chandigarh; and Dhruv Pandove Cricket Stadium, Patiala.

The tournament will be played under the aegis of Punjab Cricket Association and is recognised by the BCCI.

According to Sushil Kapoor, organising secretary of the tournament, 16 leading teams from all over the country are likely to take part in the tournament, which will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis. All matches will be of 50 overs each innings.

PCA panel umpires and scorers will be detailed for the matches. SG test (red) cricket balls will be used for day matches and the final will be played at the PCA Stadium on September 25.

Efforts are also being made to rope in Doordarshan for live telecast of the final.

Winners will get a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh along with winners’ trophy and runners-up will get Rs 1 lakh with the trophy.

The tournament will be played under the BCCI rules of one-day cricket.

The teams will be divided in four pools and top two teams from each pool will qualify for the quarterfinals.

The Mumbai Cricket Association, Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, Odisha Cricket Association, India Cements Chennai, Indian Oil Corporation, Mumbai, BPCL Mumbai, Air India Delhi, Reliance Industries Mumbai, All-India FCI Delhi, MRF Chennai, SBOP Patiala, PCC, PCA Colts and ONGC Delhi are some of the teams likely to figure in the tournament.

There will be 31 matches, including the final, in this 11-day cricket tournament.

St Stephen’s lift trophy

Chandigarh, July 28
The football team of St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, qualified for the Subroto Mukherjee Football Championship to be held in Delhi after defeating Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, today.

In the final of the Pre-Subroto Mukherjee Football Cup for Boys (U-14) at the Football Stadium, Sector 17, the wining side posted a 4-0 victory over the rivals.

After three minutes, Udayveer doubled the lead, while in the 12th minute, Akshit scored his second and the team’s third goal. Rinraithan sealed the team’s victory after scoring the last goal of the match in the 23rd minute of the game. — TNS

The Panchkula District Badminton Association will organise the 7th Ashwani Gupta District Badminton Championship at the Sports Complex, Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3, from August 3 to 5.
