The stories around Rajesh Khanna’s fan following may be far too many. We find out how obsessed the current generation is and the extremes they would go to for their loved celeb

FAN BASE: Amitabh Bachchan & Abhishek surrounded by fans

As the news of Rajesh Khanna’s demise made headlines, more and more stories on the crazy fan following he had are being talked out. From stalling a shoot on a bridge to his lipstick smeared car, fans really have never known boundaries when it comes to their love for celebs. Have the definitions changed or is the current generation still as crazy about their idols? We dig in and find out more.

For Deepika Padukone fan, Jaivardhan Gupta, it’s about picking up fights to grab the right opportunity to see his lady love. “If ever I am even in the same city, I will do all that it takes to see her,” he says. Extreme behaviour for celebs is really no fresh news. From blood-smeared love letters to stalkers, celebs pretty much have to battle lots out. “I have always had posters of Shah Rukh Khan in my room and recently when I found out he was going to be in town for a film promotion, I temporarily lost it,” says Vineet Kaur, a 19-year-old student all set to enter college. What followed was making friends with the staff of the five-star hotel, the actor was scheduled to stay in.

Extremes are not extraordinary in even today, but does it really match up to the fan following of the yester-year star Rajesh Khanna? “I don’t think so. Today, there are ways in which celebs and fans connect. Social networking sites tend to provide the platform. The enigma for stars has reduced considerably,” says Alka Sharma. The era of 1970s never let the celebrities and fans get too close and personal. “That is precisely why female fans of Rajesh Khanna married his picture and call themselves widow today,” she adds.

One search on the Internet, several pages on restraining orders by celebs pop up. One such case of Anupreet Sidhu is nothing different. A self-confessed obsessive fan of Lady Gaga, she says, “I won’t mind undergoing surgery to look like her.” Currently looking at taking admission in Masters in Fashion Designing in Panjab University, the 21-year-old will go to the extent of colouring her hair turquoise for her.

With a one hour long walk through Vile Parle, Mumbai, after the demise of Rajesh Khanna, can we really stand up and say that we are lesser fans? “No, the life of a celebrity is only made because of their larger-than-life images,” says Naina Chaddha, a mother of two and a fan of Amitabh Bachchan. “I see my little ones crazy over Justin Bieber and know that if it weren’t for my strong hold, they would get his face tattooed on their arm,” she laughs.

So, where do you draw the fan line?

know the facts

Celebrity worship syndrome (CWS) is an obsessive-addictive disorder in which a person becomes overly involved with the details of a celebrity's personal life. Psychologists have indicated that though many people obsess over glamorous film, television, sport and pop-stars, the only common factor between them is that they are all figures in the public eye (i.e., celebrities). The term Celebrity Worship Syndrome is in fact a misnomer.

Fashion in the making
The annual collection of INIFD students is reflective of the promising young talent
Ashima Batish

From the corridors of fashion institutes to the ramps of major fashion shows, fashion is improvised upon a hundred times. Different experiences lead to mature perspectives; better designs, brilliant themes at the fashion shows. But does that mean the end should be given more importance than the means? Certainly not, for it’s the student designers who graduate to become the flag bearers of the fashion industry.

From JJ Valaya to Rakesh Agarwval, there are ample examples to quote. So when, INIFD, announces the preview of its annual collection, we don’t take it lightly. A look at the collections and the theme behind affirms where fashion actually originates—in the fashion institutes.

Take Caroline Lalshram and Ashalata Devi for that matter. There are two big positives about their collection. One, they have brought to fore the under-represented craft of North East. Two, the unusual, unheard theme. “Titled Panthoibi, the collection is inspired from the Goddess Pathoibi, who got inspired to weave a fabric from a spider weaving his cobweb,” says Caroline. The tale goes, she created the fabric organdy. Thus they have extensively used the fabric for their collection. The craft they have tried to revive is Kouna, in which accessories like neck pieces or earrings are made from a water weed.

Titled aptly, Infinity, a collection by Manoj Kumar and Vinod Bhardwaj is inspired from the Banyan tree. “It procreates with its own roots. The process never ends,” says Manoj. In the collection, the thought process becomes evident through the earth hues and jute weaves. The designs are asymmetric. The highpoint of the collection is of course the jute jackets. “We wanted to use a natural fabric for our creations. If not completely, we have added a bit of jute to every creation.” One can see it used as a collar on a one piece dress or just a patch in the center of a flowing top.

Next is Meeras, dedicated to the craft and carving found in the Taj Mahal. Done by Harmanjot Kaur Saib and team, all creations have a uniform white base. What varies in each one is the work and use of colours used on each. “Since, it’s inspired from the Taj Mahal, we have used motifs that are found on its walls,” comes from Harmanjot. There is a lot of cutwork, resembling the wind inlets in the monument. The appliqué work in royal colours is on the lines of carving on the walls.”

More than anything else, Tina Gupta, another student designer, was sure of one aspect, that she was going to own a collection, “The reason I didn’t team up with anybody to create one.” As the title suggests, Let’s Rewind, is heavily inspired from the retro looks, designs and colours. But that’s not all. It’s also an outcome of a few classic elements—gramophones and cassettes. “Mainly cue of colours is taken from them.” As for print, to claim the rights to the collection further, she digitalised the photographs of her parents and used it on the creations. There are a lot of drapes and layers, again in tandem with the 70s style. Fashion might be amateur at this point of time, but it’s certainly not immature.

Take a note

And there were many more collections praiseworthy. Adaa by Aarti Rathour and team, have shown, through their seven creations, how suddenly a woman transforms once she begins to dress up. Charismatic Mignonette only has a complicated name, but uses the simple, age old art of mehendi. And simple things are always beautiful. Other collections Night Wish and Mosaical are worth a mention too.

All for a social cause
A recently held fashion show organised by the members of the Lakshmi Ladies Club aimed at creating awareness about female foeticide. There are many such events dotting Ludhiana
Poonam Bindra

Photo: Himanshu Mahajan What is it about social events and celebrities that blends so well? One benefits the other, adds some substance and brings in good will. It could be a charity dinner to raise funds, a get together for the differently-abled, an event to spread awareness for the thalassemic, or bring breast cancer out in the open, or spread some light for the orphaned.

Such associations do yield results and what looks like a case of “showoff” actually ends up in helping quite a few underprivileged people. Ludhiana, the upcoming metropolis is no less in this regard. More and more private institutions are taking up social causes. Very recently the star ladies club – the Lakshmi Ladies club also jumped upon the ‘social upliftment’ wagon by tying up with the “Punjab  Fashion  Tour” which had it’s mega event in collaboration with Nanhi Chaan”, which works towards eliminating  female foeticide and tries to raise a voice against other injustices meted out to the women folk and the girl child by society. The president, Neeta Sood says, “It is a power-packed fashion show. The ramp was soon taken over by the socialites who worked for a cause and contributed to the society with their Individual efforts.” These included the likes of Pappo Abhash, working for PNDT, Red Cross and ASHI particularly. Incidentally ASHI (Association of social health in India) works to help solve domestic issues. Walking on the ramp was Rajini Bector, educationist Kamla Jain. Astrologer Rachna Sharma and social activist Indu Bhaskar. Meera Bajwa, who represented Nanhi Chaan says, “Such events are sure  to become path leaders in combining social causes with social events and do their bit for the community, thus giving ‘socialising” a purpose and a different hue!”

A mega shopping  carnival organised by socialite Divya Dhanda once in spring and once in Autumn is always in aid of the Nirdosh school for the mentally challanged and besides keeping aside a share of the earning for the school, the children get to exhibit goods made by them. Similarly, Ek Paryas, a school for the handicapped is the brainchild of Sameera Bector from the house of Cremica foods.

Back in the year 2003 little did the team at Ogilvy and Mather knew that they’d do as much of justice to the breed of a toy dog as to the telecom major they were trying to put the spotlight on. While the network may or may not have followed but the imaginary shadow of a cute dog did. “Those days when those advertisements were high, especially the one where this cute little pug follows the girl everywhere, they always caught my attention,” Mehak Walia, MCM student, recalls the story behind her pug Bacardi. Just like the girl in the advertisement, she found her parallel. “Very soon I had a best friend, a room mate, my new partner in crime, my little dog, my heartbeat at my feet.” Need we say more about the relationship that started two years ago? “He was just thirty days old when we got him and he was the size of a fist. Initially he had to be fed through milk bottles and Merelac.”

Love me, love my dog

As of now, she’s literally high on the big round eyes, curled tail and black velvet ears. As the name goes, on a sipping spree. “I named him Bacardi because he is literally the fizz in my life. Also, when he arrived from Dehradun, he came in a Bacardi carton. We also googled for a lot of names, but this fits the best.” It’s as wholesome as the television screens showed. “He follows me round the clock, be it any time of the day, any hour of the night. In fact, so much so, that even if you wake up in the middle of the night to go and have water, he’ll follow you in his sleep.” She laughs, “After following me in the sleep, he’ll go and fall asleep near the refrigerator and then he needs to be carried back.” Too much of a good thing?

Yours faithfully

Now wherever, he goes, the keen eyes follow. “Taking him for a walk is like turning heads around, with awe struck wonder.” She adds, “Only taking him to a doctor is a bit of a problem. Because for that he needs to be bribed with a candy.” With each attribute, awe follows. “We share the same bed and I wake up with the wags of his tails.” She adds, “He gets me my slippers early morning and runs away with pillows. He recognises the car horns, in fact, he is most attached to me in the family. After me, it’s my dad.” A toy dog in the family is less of a pet and more of a baby. “We’ve even celebrated his birthday with a proper party, like balloons and caps and all.” Shopping lists moved beyond bags to fit in coloured collars, chew sticks to toys. “This little friend of mine has added a lot of colour to my life.” Period.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Accept the attack
Simmi Waraich

I have long working hours and am unable to say no to work. As a result I often come home late and also worry about next day’s work. I enjoy my job but I have been having bouts of anxiety that build up and my heart rate rises and I feel something is going to happen to me. I have been to the emergency 3-4 times where all tests are normal and the doctors give me an injection or a pill and send me home. What could I be suffering from? I am 32, have a son who is six years old and my wife is a teacher.

Vijay, Chandigarh

You may be having panic attacks in which there is sudden onset of anxiety accompanied by a feeling of impending doom. It usually rises and peaks like a wave and then goes down in some minutes. During this adrenaline etc are secreted which cause the trembling, shaking, difficulty breathing, palpitations etc. However, this is a reaction that occurs even when we are face to face with a danger. The body is in fight or flight mode and the thing to understand is that this is not dangerous. Even though we may not be conscious of it, background anxiety about work, finances, disagreements with family or at work all do keep adding up and can be the triggers for panic attacks. Some people are more biologically prone to these as well.

Changing the way you deal with them helps. When you feel the anxiety levels rise, try not to fight it but accept it—let it enter you. Remind yourself that it has happened to you before and it lasts for a while and passes off. Try not to focus on what could happen but change the thoughts to focus on what you are doing.

Practice abdominal breathing. Lie on your back and keep one hand on your stomach. Feel your stomach rise as you breathe in and go in as you breathe out. Allow the breathing to be calm and rhythmic and let relaxation flow into your muscles. Do this twice a day when you are in a calm frame of mind regularly. Later practice this sitting up in a chair and in your office as well. Later try this when you are feeling anxious. Such breathing counteracts the anxiety and also gives you something to focus on. Taking an SSRI—a drug that increases the levels of serotonin in the brain also helps.

Is having marijuana as dangerous as opioids? My brother takes it sometimes and says it is not harmful and musicians and actors take it too?

Abhay, Chandigarh

Well, Opioids cause physical dependence and thus are more difficult to give up as the withdrawal symptoms are painful. However, marijuana can be dangerous too. Many first time users may have a reaction to it and get marked anxiety instead of feeling relaxed. Cannabis can cause impaired motor skills and even hallucinations, delusions.

Marijuana affects your cerebellum. Basically one has to ask oneself— as a teen and till 23 years of age, your brain is still developing so Is it all worth it? Marijuana also increases heart rate by 20- 30 beats per minute. Up to 9 per cent of people who start using marijuana also get dependent on it and the younger they start it the more they get addicted. My advice would be not to even try any substance first. If you do want to try alcohol then wait till your brain is developed—21-22 years and then too only with a friend or family member you trust. Illegal drugs like opioids are absolute no.

GET PHYSICAL
Rain, Rain come again…
Sachin Kalra

The rains are a welcome change and bring much needed relief from the scorching heat. It’s just the perfect weather to have your evening tea or coffee with hot snacks while sitting by the window watching rain drops. Romantic, nostalgic, fresh, emotional, poetic are some of the adjectives associated with this beautiful season.

But the flip side is the myriad diseases that show up during monsoon.

Many people get sick as the damp conditions give insects and pathogenic micro-organisms a better chance to multiply and spread diseases like dengue, malaria, typhoid, conjunctivitis, viral fever, common cold and flu, pneumonia and gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea and dysentery.

But we need not despair. To fully enjoy this season we need to take some precautions to keep diseases at bay and also take some steps to boost our immunity.

n Don’t skip the workouts. Exercise is an important part of your monsoon health care regime and it’s very essential to look at different indoor exercise options to stay active, fit and healthy. If you tend to get gloomy during monsoons, exercise can be your ticket to balanced emotional health. Also it will increase your immunity. Use your home exercise equipment, learn yoga, join a dance class or hit a local gym. Keep yourself active.

n Drink only boiled/ bottled water. Carry a bottle of water to avoid drinking water from unsafe sources. Drink plenty of water and keep your body well hydrated.

n Eat a healthy diet containing lots of fresh fruits and seasonal vegetables so that your body has a good store of all protective nutrients like vitamin A, C, E, and B-complex and other antioxidants and minerals.

n All vegetables and fruits should be washed well in clean water especially those that are consumed raw as a lot of worms and insects are hidden in the leafy vegetables.

n Eat home cooked meals as far as possible. If it isn’t feasible at all times, then opt for cooked meals. Avoid sandwiches, salads and other things which can contain raw vegetables.

n Protect yourself against mosquitoes. Always use and carry a mosquito repellent.

n Walking in dirty water during rainy season leads to numerous fungal infections which affect toes and nails. Always keep your feet dry and clean. Dry your feet and webs with soft dry cloth whenever they are wet.

TREND SETTER
Watch out

The matter to be debated is – who is a trendsetter? – One follows fashion or one who initiates the fashion? Like the proverbial chicken and egg story it becomes difficult to differentiate. Probably it is a mix of both – being in sync with the latest and sticking to a personal style is the true making of a true trendsetter. Tall and winsome Gunreet Thind certainly is one.

Your sense of style

For me style is synonymous with confidence and the ability to carry off what ever one is wearing with grace. I am especially fond of smart footwear, watches and those wearing them do catch my eye and become style icons for me!

Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories…

Zara black dress from Singapore!

Brand crazy or street pick ups?

A judicious mix of both!

My style icon would be…….

Sonam Kapoor for her diversity in dressing range.

Who do you think is the worst dressed celebrity?

Rakhi Sawant and Govinda for sure.

What gives you a high on the confidence level…

My body language will show confidence when I know I can carry off what ever I am wearing with aplomb

Which look would your prefer – sporty, chic or glamorous

Chic and glamorous both if I can say.

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension…..

I saw some girls wearing shorts and slacks together and I found that really odd.

Your take on accessories?

Accessories are a vital part of dressing up and definitely help to accentuate the look.

If given the choice which designer would you liked to be dressed by?

Manish Malhotra for his dreamy designs!

(As told to Poonam Bindra)

Sylvester Stallone's beefy look pushed John to gym

As a school student, John Abraham always involved himself in varied sports and remained fit. But it was Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone's beefy look in action flick Rocky IV which pushed the Indian actor to take on regular workouts in a gym for the muscular body that he now flaunts unabashedly.

"I was always a lot into sports. In school, I used to run races, relays, indulge in shotput, javelin... I was also the football captain. So I have always been fit, the sporting fit. But when I was in college, I saw (Sylvester) Stallone in Rocky IV and I was like 'My god, this guy looks amazing.' That's when I decided I need to go to the gym. That's when I started to work out to look visually right," said John.

The 39-year-old is among the few Bollywood actors who sport the perfectly chiselled body, but John aspires for a more perfect one.

"I don't mean to sound modest but I am not 100 per cent there. I am just 60 to 70 per cent there. I have to still do at least 40 per cent more to be in that amazing fit and shape that I want. There's still a year for that," he added.

In India, he feels it is actors like Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan, who have popularised the concept of gyms and proper workout.

"I think it’s important to be fit, and all credit to Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan for creating that movement amongst the youth in India to go to the gym. They deserve more credit than anyone else, including myself, but I think it is important to look at one's body in a holistic way, and to understand that one needs to have a disciplined lifestyle to have a good body," said John, who has successfully stepped into movie production with Vicky Donor.

John spoke on the sidelines of a launch event for Philips Bodygroom, a new product aimed at men who like to keep a neatly trimmed chest, back, shoulders and more. The actor sported a smooth look in the 2008 film Dostana, and he makes no bones about the fact that it's good to be clean!

"Cinema is a visual medium. A lot of the audience enjoys watching your face. But you can't ignore the body. It's very important to take care of your body and pretty much be in shape and be clean all the time," he said. — IANS

Angela’s strides to stardom

Angela Johnson who is often in news for her alleged link-up with several Bollywood actors is back. Angela, who has been in search of a launch-pad in Bollywood for a very long time, has bagged a role in Salman Khan’s Sher Khan on his recommendation, informs our sources.

“Other options were explored. But nothing came out of it. Actually Salman’s range of heroines is shrinking. He won’t work with Priyanka Chopra. Katrina and Salman have mutually decided not to sign any films together after Ek Tha Tiger. Deepika and Salman are somehow never working out together. As for Sonakshi he’s wrapping up Dabangg 2 with her and shortly goes into Shirish Kunder’s Kick with her. It’s time to find new co-stars. Angela, who has already signed with Salman’s home production, fits the role in Sher Khan perfectly,” says a source. Apparently the female protagonist in Sher Khan has to “be very girly yet very fit”. Angela must not only romance Salman but also perform stunts with him. The film is expected to be shot in the mountains and the jungles.

“Angela has spent her childhood years exploring the mountainous outdoors of Kodaikanal where she grew up. She’s got what it takes,” adds a source. While an official announcement is yet to be made - and Angela is making sure she doesn’t put her foot in her mouth this time. And after much prodding, Sohail Khan confirmed the news and said, “Angela has been signed by Sohail Khan Productions.”

Stay fit with Sonu Sood
Bollywood actor Sonu Sood shares his eating habits and fitness mantra with us…

Healthy quotient: Sonu Sood No shortcuts
There are no shortcuts to have a fit body. One needs to maintain a strict regime to have a good body. I have been in this industry for 19 years now, and my body falls into shape automatically as I have always been working towards it. Protein shakes can be taken in moderation as it causes no harm to our body. I also believe that doing things in a hurry will only harm our body both internally and externally. One should learn to put in hard work, maintain a strict diet and exercise, depending on the individual body structure.

Avoid partying
I don’t attend parties much as I am not a party animal. Even if I attend dos, I don’t drink and I am a pure vegetarian. Before I go for my long day’s shoot, I prefer to work out in the gym in the morning. That’s now become a routine as I feel incomplete if I do not work out.

Eat in limits
My favourite cuisine is Punjabi food; I love those spicy delicacies. I have stopped eating roadside food. But during my college days, I used to eat quite a lot of the road side samosas. I do cook aloo parathas when I get time. I love to eat. But I also take care that I don’t indulge in over-eating. — HRM

Sambhavna Seth turns Basanti for five Gabbars

If Gabbar Singh was alive today, he would have gone into a full-on tizzy. An upcoming slick-flick Qayamat Hi Qayamat has not one, not two, but five villains doing a rehash of Gabbar Singh, Bollywood's greatest villain ever. And just like Sholay, giving them company, is the nimble-footed Basanti... oops, we mean, the spunky Sambhavna Seth.

But the girl rues the absence of an Amitabh Bachchan or Dharmendra! "The film is surefire fun, but I'd have been happier with a dialogue like 'Tera naam kya hai Sambhavna?' from the action men," she laughs.

In a way, Sambhavna is not new to Basanti. She won the dance reality show Dancing Queen some time ago, which was judged by none other than Hema Malini. In fact, Sam (as she is fondly called), also did a Gabbar-Basanti skit for it, after which a visibly 'upset' Hema Malini walked out of the set in a huff!

Sam was shocked and saddened as she otherwise found the yesteryears superstar very loving and affable. It was only when the episode was aired, she realised that Hemaji had actually pulled a fast one on her.

Rani’s Lavani act

Dream girl: Rani Mukherji Following Katrina Kaif who did a lavani number in the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Agneepath and Vidya Balan who danced to a lavani number in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s recently released Ferrari Ki Sawaari, Rani Mukherji has picked up the cudgel and has finished shooting for a lavani number in director Sachin Kundalkar’s Aiyya. The song has been choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant.

Confirming the news, Sachin said, “Rani does three item numbers in her dream in my film Aiyya. In this film, the girl has this habit of dreaming. One of her item numbers is a lavani song that she dances again in her dream.”

“She was quite good with her lavani dance. She shared a great equation with Vaibhavi Merchant. She did rehearsals on the sets. It's a rapid, classical, sensuous lavani song,” Co-produced by Anurag Kashyap and Viacom 18, Aiyaa is a story of a woman who finds a man desirable because he smells good. Rani, who plays a Marathi girl in the film, is paired opposite Southern super hero Prithvi Raj.
