Date with the self
Spiritual retreats are increasingly getting popular for those looking for some meaning in today's materialistic world and people from all age groups are gaining from them...
Mona

Deepak Vig's life is as busy as any of us. A distributor for a telecom company, his work keeps him occupied all day long and competition is fierce. Coupled with other responsibilities of family life, challenges are the order of the day.

And this May, he reserved five days to brace himself for the life that lies ahead. He took up a spiritual retreat at Kasauli and came back a winner! "It's like rain and snow falls equally on every roof. Water starts dripping from weaker ones; so is life. The course I attended has made me stronger to face the tests and tribulations of life. I am so content that negativity cannot touch me." Wasn't it difficult to take out time? "One has to take out time for the basics of life. We take out six hours to attend a wedding function, three hours to watch a movie and so much time for idle chat. If you want you can also take out time for the retreat."

Deepak is one the many who takes frequent retreats to connect with the spiritual self. Professionals, students or homemakers, retreats have become a regular get-away from the maddening pace of life. While having a small talk with a bunch of friends, Anuja Lath, CEO, Red Alchemy, found the idea of Vipassana very appealing. "Being by yourself for ten complete days…no talking, no eye contact, no physical contact, no phone, no computer, no TV, no books, no writing, no exercise…. essentially nothing but being with yourself… thinking, reviewing, evaluating, in essence taking stock of your life so far… and understanding how you fit into the overall scheme of things. It sounded challenging and exciting," shares Anuja.

She calls the experience 'exceptional'. While initial days were tough, once she got the hang of the technique, things became better. So much so that by the end of the ten-day retreat, she did not want to go back home! The silence; being one with the self, Anuja, amongst other things, gained insight into concepts like equanimity and impermanence. "Its tough, it can drive you nuts, it can disorient you completely and it's physically very difficult to go through, however, it's akin to having a baby, all that pain is worth it," she sums up the experience for us.

For Jasleen, a Masters student at the Panjab University, the Art of Living experience was truly wonderful. "I was in this state of despair that I could make no sense of myself. It was then, as if by divine coincidence, that I got to do Art of Living basic course." Meditation did not come easy to her. But once she settled into the course, it changed her outlook towards life. "To be able to do something that I hadn't even thought in two decades of my life was difficult, but worth all the effort," she says.

Serving the community

Vipassana happened to KL Sharma when he most needed it. While passing through a particularly troublesome phase of life in 1983, someone suggested that he undergoes the course to gain peace of mind. "I cannot put down the experience in words. The course instilled in me a sense of no fear," he says. Even during his service as a senior banker, he pursued one course after another. Ten days, twenty days followed by thirty days. Post retirement, he has taken to serve the Vipassana centres as a teacher. Just back after taking a course at Lucknow, he shares his take, "It is the utmost service that I can do. When after each course I see peaceful people, my heart swells with intense happiness."

Simple, steady steps
Luck combines with hardwork as Bollywood actor Prachi Desai moves ahead in her career. We dig in more…
Sabia Talwar

A dimpled smile coupled with gorgeous looks is what makes Prachi Desai stand apart in Bollywood. Her latest movies, Bol Bachchan and Teri Meri Kahaani, have stamped her presence further. "Bol Bachchan has been my biggest commercial movie till date and my experience has been wonderful," she says.

Prachi started her career with a television serial when she was just seventeen. "I was in my twelfth standard back in Pune when I gave the auditions for Zee TV's Kasam Se. Later, I shifted to Mumbai."

Her next appearance was in the dance reality show Jhalak Dhikhlaja Season 2, which made headlines due to a controversial win of the dancing diva. "I think people started recognising that I'm quite young when I did this dance show."

While she was doing Jhalak Dikhlaja, the movie Rock On came along. "Initially when I received a call from the production house of Rock On I thought it was a prank, but later it was confirmed. Imagine I was just nineteen then." She made the right choices and finally bid adieu to the telly world. "I had time to sit back and think
what I really wanted out of my life; I chose Bollywood over television."

In India, people have regressive thinking about actors on television unlike Hollywood where stars like Jennifer Aniston do both television shows and movies. "As television is very time-consuming and exhausting, I shifted to movies. But I would always thank television and Ekta Kapoor for what I am today."

From the role of a modern girl in Rock On to Once Upon a Time in Mumbai to Teri Meri Kahaani and Bol Bachchan, Prachi has done a variety of roles. She will next be seen in I, Me Aur Main, where she plays the role of a Bohemian girl. "I'm very fortunate to have done such a wide variety of roles. I'm happy and excited that people have started noticing my work."

Fame did not come easy though, "I struggled a lot and will continue to do so forever, as I'm not a star kid."

Any advice for aspiring actors? "There are a lot of people out there working hard, but luck surely has a role to play. So be ambitious, but keep your options open."

Hit formula
Bollywood movies are no longer ‘one music composer’ wonder. Now hit numbers from private albums are finding a place in
many a film...

Jasmine Singh

Every second music lover had it on the ipod, every Internet buff was listening to the live jamming; we savoured every bit of Arif Lohar's Jugni and before we thought it was fading in memory, we saw it being played in the interesting mix of Cocktail (movie). The director probably decided to include Arif's Jugni in Cocktail as a trend or for that 'extra' effect and the track looks like it was made for this moment!

Welcome to the innovative world of cinema, where like the wellness and hospitality industry, movie-makers rake up something new every now and then. We saw Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif dancing to Labh Janjua's old-time hit Ji karda; then came Lember Hussainpuri's number Kadi sadi gali in Tanu weds Manu and the recent Honey and Gippy's number Angrezi beat tey in Cocktail. It is definitely not the days of Sonu Nigam or Udit Narayan taking over the entire album of the movie; film and music directors like to present a dish that is an assortment of various ingredients. The idea of course is to perk up the whole music of the film. Or is there more to it?

Buy and sell

It is a simple equation of demand and supply. Bollywood wants something different in music and hit songs from private or non-private albums fulfill the need. Punjabi singer Lember Hussainpuri had sold the rights of his hit song Kadi sadi gali in 2004 in England. It was later used in Tanu weds Manu. "Had I known that the song would become a big hit, I wouldn't have sold the rights," Lember says jokingly. The music director of Tanu weds Manu purchased the song directly from the company. As Lember says, "Hindi films are recognising the reach of Punjabi numbers because the songs are a hit with people. I have been approached by Akshay Kumar to share my song Mildey yaar gavachey in one of his films. The talks are on for it."

Director's edge

Music director Pritam is famous for his 'lifting' habits. "It is not about using only hit Punjabi numbers in movies, as a music director I look at the entire movie and how songs can shape it up. If a particular number can fit in the slot without being out of place, I wouldn't mind using it. This also gives a singer recognition, just like we did for Cocktail," says Pritam, who will use many more hit solo numbers in his upcoming movies if need be.

Cut to cut

It is definitely a trend, but who decides to bring in this change — the captain of the ship, the director or the pied piper of the movie, the music director? Playback singer Abhijeet who gave the rocking number Zara sa jhoom loon main in Bollywood blockbuster Dilwale dulhaniya le jayenge finds everything being done in utter confusion. "Neither the producers are not sure of the kind of music they want nor are the music directors giving original music. So, the next best thing is to put an already established number in the movie. It wasn't the case earlier when music directors like Nadeem Shravan and Jatin Lalit were given charge of the music. Now, it is an assortment and this is what sells." On the other hand, veteran music director Uttam Singh views the new scenario as a confused state of affairs. "I wouldn't call such people as music directors, they are music drivers. How can they call someone else's work their own and take credit for it? Nevertheless, such a thing is becoming hit as well. I would rather like genuine work to be appreciated rather than such confused assortment of ingredients."

All is not well

As we talk about the recent trend of music in Bollywood, famous Punjabi singer Labh Janjua cries foul. "My hit number Mundeyan toh bach key rahin was used in the movie Boom without my permission. And the movie made crores of rupees with that song. This is not fair."

Labh and other singers have learnt a lesson from this. They would not sell the rights of their songs to anyone.

Who knows when one of their numbers hits the chart and Karan Johar or Imtiaaz Ali decides to use it in their films!

Creativity galore
Designer Varun Bahl showcases his collection for the festive season in Ludhiana
Gurvinder Singh

There is something unusual about the way Varun Bahl explains his collection and the creative intentions behind it. Never once in between the conversation, he changes the decibel level of his voice. It's pretty monotonous. But is there a need to modify the tone he speaks in? Certainly not! Take a look at his collection; his designs speak more than he does. In Ludhiana, to display his collection for the festive season at AZA, a multi-designer outlet, MBD Neopolis, he talks about a bit about his creations. Rest of the talking part is of course taken up by the creations themselves.

The collection includes lehengas, sarees, Anarkalis, sherwanis, kurtas and shirts. The colour patterns shift from bright colours to the brighter ones, yet they soothe the eyes. There are shades of fuschia, red, yellow and coral, complemented too well by soft fabrics like chiffons and georgettes. The youngest member of the board of directors of FDCI, Varun takes up the onus that every Indian designer consciously or unconsciously takes up-to promote various forms of embroideries. Each piece pledges the same. Digital prints and Ombre dyeing are the other trends that Varun brings to Ludhiana. "Brides these days prefer less of heavy work on their dresses," says Varun.

As much he is known for his designs, he makes news for big connections in Bollywood. On the top lists his bonding with Karan Johar, teaming up with whom each year he comes up with a special men's wear collection. He has brought the same to the city as well. This collection was launched three years back at AZA and the brand has its exclusive store now in Mumbai. "It has been a year of having been associated with Madhuri Dixit. She is very open to new ideas; working with her has been fabulous," he says.

Varun says that he has been to Punjab before as well and clientele here is more discerning than what he initially thought. "Awareness about brands and fashion couture is improving with the arrival of brands, multiplexes etc," he says. The new festive collection is not very bridal and has a wide variety of items, including the tunics, Anarkalis as well as sarees and these can be customised according to the orders. Suits with jackets obviate the need for sporting the dupattas. Hint of colour has also been introduced to the ivory to inject festive energy. There are various flowery silhouettes.

The men's Karan Johar-Varun Bahl collection has been sported by celebrities and stars. The collection comprises sherwanis and suits. A special collection of shirts add style quotient to office-wear as well. "The moon-cut design and textures add the element of elegance, without the need for using embroidery, which many men do not prefer. Nehru jackets are also included," says Varun.

Cocktail is not the only recent movie shot in picturesque South Africa. In last four years, there are as many as 28 movies have been shot there. This was just one information shared by Hanneli Slabber, country manager, South African Tourism.

In Chandigarh on Thursday to promote her country and to announce the commencement of Module III for ‘Learn South Africa’ programme, she said why one should choose South Africa for a travel destination.

“For one thing, you will get to do something different for each day you spend here,”

says Hanneli. Sky diving, quad bike riding, observing wild life (ever thought of shark cage diving) —the experience that this country offers is myriad. “The number of Indian tourists is rising. But we can still do with more,” says Hanneli.

Soon they are going to launch the GPS service in Hindi. And, almost all the restaurants serve vegetarian and vegan fare. Value for money is another gain she quickly adds up. “Now there are companies offering 12-night trip, including almost all the activities and also ex-Mumbai fare for Rs 1 lakh per person.”

Giving the best treatment to tourists remains the tourism boards’ priority. So there are special trips organised for children if you want some time off. Whatever be the age group, there are loads of activities to do. “Indian tourists are not only the most well dressed and well behaved but also adventurous. We had this granny, a 67-year-old, who sky-dived from 700 feet not once but three times the same day. With three grandchildren, she took three dives for each one of them.”

What can you do?

Cooling curing curds

Traditional medicine and Ayurveda believe some foods are warming, while others cool our body system. Instinctively too, we know which ingredients are cooling in the hot summer months. Yogurt is a highly recommended food during the hot season since it has a soothing effect on our system. Your bowels' best friend, yogurt cures intestinal disorders and flushes out toxins from the body. In summer, even cooked gravies with a yogurt base are recommended as a better alternative to the usual spicy 'masala' curry cooked with onion and garlic. Kashmiri cuisine has this gorgeous velvety yoghurt gravy which enhances almost any food you dunk into it, be it potatoes, paneer or meats. The recipe calls for dried ginger powder which is acceptable in small quantities, even though it would be considered a 'warm' infiltrator!

Potatoes in yoghurt gravyy 2 large potatoes or 4-5 small ones

2 tablespoons oil

½ tsp jeera

Pinch of heeng

1 tbsp ground fennel (saunf) optional

1½ tbsp besan

1 bay leaf

¾ cup yogurt

½ tsp ginger powder

1 tsp finely chopped green chilies

1 tbsp dhania powder

½ tsp haldi

½ tsp Kashmiri mirch

ysalt to taste

¼ cup chopped fresh dhaniya

Method

Boil the potatoes until they are tender but not mushy. Peel and cut them if you are using large ones. Mix the yogurt, ginger powder, green chilies, turmeric powder, coriander powder, 'saunf' and chili powder into a paste. Heat the oil in a saucepan and add the jeera and heeng. After the jeera crackles, add the bay leaf and besan. Stir for about half a minute until the besan turns golden-brown. Add the yogurt paste and stir-fry for about 2 minutes on medium heat until the oil starts separating from the paste. Add the potatoes and salt sand let it cook for 2-3 minutes. Add about a cup and a half of water and let the gravy boil. Cook on low-medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes and adjust the seasoning and thickness to your liking.

Note : You may add kasuri methi toward the end of the cooking time for an interesting flavour variation.

Juhi Chalwa’s verdict on Bol Bachchan

Actress Juhi Chawla says that recent Bollywood films had begun to worry her about the lost charm and innocence, but Abhishek Bachchan-starrer clean film Bol Bachchan has restored her faith. "Just watched Bol Bachchan at a movie theatre in Kampala. Had a good laugh! The movie is completely cracking! Ajay Devgn and Abhishek were hilarious. Everyone in the movie was fun," tweeted Juhi.

"And what I liked about it most... it was a clean film! The girls skirts were long... The necklines high... No nonsense unnecessary kissing or sleeping around... Call me old fashioned but I was beginning to get worried about Hindi films. Wanting to be so much like Hollywood films... losing their charm, originality, innocence," added the 44-year-old, whose popular films include Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Darr and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. —IANS

Sonu’s slip on superstar

Singer Sonu Niigam recalled an incident when the late actor requested him to sing a song from one of his films during Fardeen Khan's wedding and he couldn't sing. "I was performing on Fardeen's wedding, Rajeshji stood right in front of me listening to all my mad medleys, and then requested me to sing Jai Jai Shiv Shankar. And I couldn't because I didn't know the antara’s lyrics. I feel terrible today. I met him last at a friend Satyaprakash's son's wedding couple of months back. I knew he couldn't last long for he was so frail," Sonu said. He added, "The world may mock you for your carelessness while you are alive, but does eventually give you your due theyour achievements on your final journey. Rest in peace, Sir."

Rani for animal’s award

Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee’s noble deed of helping a dog in distress has won her an award. Her kind deed has been recognised by animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India.

Rani was shooting for her upcoming film "Aiyya" when she reportedly saw a stray dog being harassed by a few onlookers on the set. She rushed to help the dog by stopping them.

For this, Rani will receive a Hero to Animals Award from PETA India.

"This dog would have been terrified and suffered more abuse were it not for Rani's compassionate and quick action," said Sachin Bangera, PETA India manager of media and celebrity projects.

"We encourage everyone to stop and speak up for animals who are subjected to pain or suffering, because if you don't, maybe no one else will," he added.

Past recipients of PETA's Hero to Animals Award include actors like Zarine Khan, for rescuing a cat from the street, and Cyrus Broacha, for refusing to perform a stunt that involved riding a bull. —IANS

Promoting fresh talent

Film-maker Vishal Bhardwaj has roped in three of late art director Sameer Chanda’s assistants for his forthcoming films to pay homage to his close friend. The trio will be working in Bhardwaj’s upcoming Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola starring Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma and Ek Thi Daayan starring Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin. Bhardwaj and Sameer Chanda had worked earlier together on projects like Omkara, Kaminey and Makdee. But after Chanda’s death, instead of hiring some other experienced art director, Bhardwaj quite generously appointed three of Chanda’s assistants, namely Subrato Chakravarthy, Punita Grover and Amit Ray.  Tells Subrato Chakravarthy, “I have been an assistant with Sameer dada from a film called Indian many years back and so has been Amit. Punita joined us during Rang De Basanti. I learnt more about Vishal now.”

Hollywood star Halle Berry is fine after she was hospitalised following a minor accident on the sets of her new film The Hive.

The 45-year-old actress was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after falling over and hitting her head on the concrete floor during a fight sequence. A spokesperson for the star has now confirmed Berry was taken to the hospital as a precaution, and was released after undergoing tests, reported a publication. "Halle Berry suffered a minor head injury while shooting a fight sequence on the set of her film, The Hive. "She was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but she checked out healthy and was released. She'll continue production as planned," said the representative. The incident is the second injury the Oscar-winner has suffered in recent months - she slipped and broke her foot while filming another movie, Cloud Atlas, in Spain earlier this year.— PTI

The runway woman

Actress Katie Holmes is heading back to Broadway post her much publicised divorce from Tom Cruise.

Holmes has signed on to play Lorna in Theresa Rebeck's new play, Dead Accounts. The five-character comedy is set to open later this year at the Music Box Theatre and will be directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien.

It is Holmes first major career move since she surprised Hollywood by filing for divorce from Cruise a few weeks ago.

The actress has already filmed an episode of Project Runway. She is said to be working on the indie film Molly, which she also co-wrote and produced.

Holmes had garnered a mixed reaction for her Broadway debut in 2008's All My Sons. — PTI

Style wise with Aki

Aki Narula has styled and designed for many films such as Dostana, Kurbaan, Agent Vinod, Housefull 2 and others. He has set trends with neon colours and whacky combinations and layering of clothes. He dishes out advice on what it takes to style a film.

Script counts a lot

You should worship the script, follow it and believe in the characters. Only then your clothes will look like a part of the movie. For example, Bipasha's look in Bachna Ae Haseeno had the Bandra-Shiamak-dancer vibe and later on when she became a Diva and went to Italy, she dressed up in sophisticated gowns and high fashion.

Give it your best shot

You have to be totally passionate about the project and time commitment. A movie takes almost a year with three months of pre-production and 6-8 months in production. The movie is like your lover for a year, like a new relationship and you have to give it your best.

Screen presence

You need to have a sense of colours, as to what will look good on screen and a sense of what cuts and silhouettes will suit a particular actor's body. You have to be very good at convincing people because you have to convince actors and directors all the time about certain costumes.

Location hunt

You need to research about the locations and characters and decide where you want to shop and what you need to design accordingly. For Bachna Ae Haseeno, I shopped from New York and Bangkok, Kurbaan was shopped for from Delhi, Don was Hong Kong and for Dostana I picked up stuff from Miami and LA and designed some stuff myself in Mumbai.

Hollywood actress Uma Thurman has showed off her baby daughter in public for the first time just a day after giving birth.

The Kill Bill star became a mother for the third time on July 15 when she delivered a little girl and her first child with financier boyfriend Arpad Busson, reported a website.

Thurman, 42, was spotted cradling her bundle of joy at an organic cafe store in Woodstock.

"Thurman is a regular visitor at the organic cafe, where she ordered cold-pressed juices," a source said.

Knight in boring armour

Film: The Dark Knight Rises

Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway and Marian Cottilara

The Dark Knight Rises is the epic conclusion to film-maker Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to a fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of DA Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

Slow story

This part of the series has a rather heavy plot, so it is difficult to register. There are too many flashbacks which slows down the momentum of the movie. It also gets boring at many points.

Nikhil Sharma, student, PU

Good job

The entire cast plays their characters very well. Anne Hathaway adds the extra zing. It has intense sequences of violence and action which makes the movie worth watching.

Ankita Das, student, MCM College

Worth it

The wait was very long for this part but it is worth it. The dialogues are, however, not great as the performances. Tom Hardy does what is expected out of a seasoned actor like him and Anne Hathaway is good with her performance.

Grooving away to health

The secret to staying healthy is rather basic – eat healthy and exercise regularly. However, despite the apparent simplicity of this ‘secret’, we see an incredible number of unhealthy people of all sizes and ages.

When trying to answer the ‘why’ the aforementioned situation implies, Vikram Kapoor, general manager of Bodyzone Gym and Spa- 9, Chandigarh, along with Anup Debnath, group fitness manager of the same, had an epiphany that led to the creation of Dancercise.

Dancercise is a concept tailored for people who want to shed the pounds without 50 repetitions of mind-numbing exercises done to gym music. Dancercise seeks to revolutionize exercise in a way that appeals to the masses – through three forms of dance: bhangra, zumba and Bollywood.

Bhangra, a high energy–low impact dance done to pulsating beats is the perfect cardio workout. Bhangra works on your stamina and helps shed excess weight. Second is the Colombian phenomenon of zumba, guaranteed to sculpt your mid-section and give you the abs you’ve always yearned for through a series of easy-to-follow rhythmic moves done to Latin music. Along with chiseling your body, zumba is great for flexibility and endurance. The third and final dance form covered by Dancercise is one we are intimately familiar with – Bollywood. Pieces that incorporate both grace and energy with easy to learn steps, it is the perfect class to learn some new moves and work on rhythm and character while burning copious amounts of fat.

Dancercise is a three month course for a total of Rs. 7,500. Within the 36 classes is not only weight loss and general fitness, but a unique opportunity to learn fun dance forms.

Moving on

Archana Vijaya who became famous due to anchoring IPL and later joining Colors’ Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa talks talks about her exit from the show. She shares her future plans...

How was your journey in Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa?

I learnt a lot about dancing and it was wonderful to be part of the show. It was a learning experience more than anything else. I never thought I would learn all these dance forms  and perform before such great judges. I would have liked to dance a little bit more maybe. It was fun. I didn’t know how physically demanding it was.

You got injured too.

Yes I tore my hip flexer during the second week and after a 12 hour rehearsal I had neck spasm. I underwent physiotherapy and come down to the stage. I couldn’t even move my neck, so when they announced my name I felt it was good as I wouldn’t have been able to do my best in the later episodes. I was relieved that I was out.

From IPL to JDJ, how has it helped your career?

It is very different as both genres are totally opposite. From a channel to cricket the audiences and appeal is different. Colors has left no stone unturned and given us great exposure. Since elimination, my phone has been ringing non stop. It’s a feather in my cap

Is this a step towards films?

I don’t know. I never thought I would dance and here I am. Similarly you never know you might see me in a blockbuster Hindi film.

What’s next?

I have been approached for Ten Cricket upcoming India Sri Lanka series and UTV is in talks with me for a show. I want to take a breather, as my body needs it.

Bringing back the magic

Buzz is that Mitali Nag’s character will be killed in Zee TV’s Afsar Bitiya. Apparently, the low TRPs are the reason and the makers want to spice up the show so they have approached dusky beauty Parul Chauhan. She was paired with Kinshuk Mahajan in the hit show Bidaai and as he is already in the show, the makers want to bring them together again.
