The maximum service is being provided by the middlemen who get any kind of work done right from arranging kidneys to Jaguars to telecom bandwidths. They give the actual service and get handsome money but are saved from paying the service tax. Slowly, the revenue department is bringing every service under its ambit. Some people have even dropped basic courtesies from the fear of service tax. Earlier a shopkeeper used to ask whenever a customer went to his shop, ‘Kaya seva karen ji’? Now, it is not the case anymore. When I asked the reason, he replied, “If I ask how I can serve you, the tax men may impose service tax on me.”
