Kurali, July 2 The incident occurred at 12.30 am when over 100 residents gathered on the main road following a power cut and blocked the traffic. The police reached the spot immediately and tried to pacify the agitators. "We are spending sleepless nights. The electricity department imposes cuts at will," said Kashmir Singh, a resident of the area. The road was blocked for about one-and-a-half-hour. However, the senior police officials managed to pacify the agitators who then lifted the blockade at about 2 am. |
Evening courts start functioning
Chandigarh, July 2 A senior official of the UT Administration said that on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, two evening courts have been set up at the sessions division, Chandigarh, for disposal of cases under Negotiable Instruments Act, traffic challans and petty offences. At present, about 50,000 of the 80,000 cases pending in district courts are related to cheques being dishonoured. Besides, a large number of cases related to traffic challans are also pending. |

ASI's son duped of Rs 2.5 lakh
Mohali, July 2 The victim, Jatinderpal Singh, had gone to the ICICI Bank at Phase VII to deposit Rs 2.5 lakh when the incident occurred. The police said Jatinderpal Singh (21) was approached by the fraudster, who posed himself as an employee of the bank and offered him help in filling in a form. “Jatinder was asked to fill in an IT form, which he (the fraudster) had termed necessary to deposit the huge amount. Then he asked Jatinder to give him the amount and get photostat copies of his identity card from outside. On return, Jatinder found the fraudster missing along with his bag that contained the cash," said the police. Mataur police station’s SHO Inspector Dharam Pal said they had procured the CCTV footage from the bank. |

One rape accused held
Mohali, July 2 DSP DS Mann said Kamaldeep Singh was arrested from Landran Chowk when he was alighting from a bus today. "The other accused, Bhupinder Singh, is still at large, but he would be nabbed soon," said DSP Mann. Bhupinder and Kamaldeep had managed to flee when there was no power in the police station. Two policemen, Munshi Hem Raj and constable Ram Murti, who were on duty, were also booked under Sections 223 and 224, IPC at the Sohana police station here on Sunday. Two arrested for possessing drugs
Chandigarh: The police arrested two persons for possessing drugs - ganja and charas. The Crime Branch of Chandigarh Police arrested Ranjit Singh Shahha, resident of District-Bhagalpur (Bihar), near kerosene pump in Sector-22, Chandigarh, on July 1 and recovered 4 kg ganja from his possession. The local police also arrested Mogal Dass hailing from Bihar near lake parking, Sector 42 and recovered 1 Kg Charas from his possession.
Two couples booked
The police booked two couples for fighting in public causing disturbance. A case was registered against Ravi Kumar and his wife, residents of Mauli Jagran, Chandigarh, and Bahadur and his wife, residents of Dadumajra, who were arrested near SCO number 88-89, Sector-17D, on July 1. — TNS |

Chandigarh, July 2 The bowling duo of leg-spinner Gurinder Singh and off spinner Abhilash Sharma claimed 11 and 7 wickets respectively in both the innings. Earlier, the Mohali team resuming from their overnight score of 247 for 8 was bowled out for 272 in 85.2 overs. Birkanwar Singh Virk was the first to go after he was caught by Veer Karan Goel off Gurinder Singh for 84 of 164 balls, hitting ten boundaries and three sixes.
