This Father’s Day, here’s catching up with some who share a special bond with their daddy darling

Father’s Day may be a recent import to India, but the bond has always been special. Dads are a darling when it comes to daughters, but we were surprised to find how special a bond sons share with their dads as well!

This Father’s Day, we talk to a few sons as well as daughters from the region, on their relationship, some cherished memories and challenges...

Today is a special day for model Anchal Kumar, who is celebrating in a big manner. The party is at her new sea-facing apartment wherein eight of her closest friends join her and her dad S Kumar.

The bond

My dad has been a strict disciplinarian. He ensured that I got the best of education, read the best of the books and was always at the best of the behaviour. The equation changed once I moved to Mumbai; we are more of friends now. We keep in constant touch. He often flies down from Chandigarh to spend time with me. And even when away, he always senses if I am stressed out and helps bring back the positive self in me. He says, ‘Today is the tomorrow you were worried about yesterday’.

The best

I feel fortunate that he had faith in my dreams. Though he was as anxious as any other dad, he never clipped my wings and has always been supportive.

The challenges

I had a great opportunity at 18 to move to Milan and settle but my father categorically said ‘no’. I got hugely upset then, but when I look back today I realise that it was the best decision of my life!

Strong basics

Vashovardhan Saboo, entrepreneur

Yashovardhan Saboo’s relationship with dad RK Saboo has been on many levels. Personal or business, they have shared a close relationship, which is more of a friendship now. While preparing him for life, his dad also gave lots of space and independence to him.

The best

It’s the high ethical values that my father lived by and inculcated in me. Well-travelled, he gave us lots of exposure in varied fields. Living by the values became part of my thinking as well.

The challenges

Every relationship has its highs and lows. We also had ours. Some regrets are a given, but if the basics are strong one finds the way. We did!

Building dreams
Sangeet Sharma
Sangeet Sharma, architect

Architect Sangeet Sharma and SD Sharma have not only lived together, but also worked together. As father, SD has been a mentor, guide and teacher who has passed on honesty, truthfulness and persistence to his son.

The best

When I look back the finest memory is the time when he perceived my interest in music and gifted me a guitar in class seventh. I am a semi-professional singer now, have already cut an album and a second one is in the offing.

The challenges

Even today he gives me a run for my money in designing buildings, winning accolades and awards. Howsoever fast I might run, I will never be able to match his pace. So progressive is he that sometimes I feel small, but then I regain my composure and am back in action.

Dad’s always right

Jaspinder Cheema, actor

Actor Jaspinder Cheema shares an honest bond with her dad Narinder Singh Cheema. They share every information under the sun. After making some wrong decisions, Jaspinder has figured it out by now that dad’s always right!

The best

When I stepped into the glamour industry, all in the family, except my dad, was against me. Though people came and told him ‘achi ladakiyan kabhi bhi showbiz main successful nahi hoti’, he supported me through thick and thin. For PTC Miss Punjabi contest (2008), he left his work and came with me to Delhi. The day I won, I saw tears in his eyes.

The challenges

After my 12th, I had to move out of Batala for further studies. I gave an entrance exam, secured a seat and then shared my will. He wasn’t too keen, he thought for five days before deciding.

Dreams are common to all of us, but some people live to fulfill each dream... such is the story of Avneet Setya, who recently won the UTV Bindass Dell Inspiron Road Diaries show

I always had a fear of heights. My legs were shaking; the host of the show looked like a dot from the top... Now, I can jump off from any location. It’s a great feeling to have overcome my fear

The strangest fact about a father-son relationship is not being able to talk your heart out. Now, imagine confessing your feelings for your father on a paper, wrapping it in a bottle and throwing it away in the Ganges! That is exactly what Avneet Setya has done through the rare opportunity he bagged. Avneet recently won the UTV Bindass Dell Inspiron Road Diaries and has some experiences to share with us.

“You know how people keep going on and on about their vacations abroad; I am telling you India has far more to offer for explorers,” the 24-year old says. It was after quitting his very ‘taxing’ job at HDFC corporate head office in Delhi that Avneet joined a marketing start-up and just needed a break from the responsibilities of life. “I have always known of people who want to do so much but just delay it or compromise with their dreams,” he says. It was at that point that Avneet found out about the show and went on to fulfill his dreams.

Always in touch with entertainment, Avneet has spent a whole lot of time in theatre, playing national-level cricket and dancing, Avneet always had a strong gut feeling that life will be an entertaining and enlightening experience for him. Out of the 25 wishes he managed to complete, the lad shares a few with us. “Apart from the message in the bottle, I had wished to sing a devotional song,” he recollects.

Lucky enough to be at Rudraprayag after successful completion of a task on the show, Avneet sang Sai We Saddi Faryaad and prayed for all the contestants. “I did edit the song a bit and named all my fellow contestants, hoping that all their dreams came true,” he adds. From river-rafting to having tea with a maharaja, a few of his dreams came true by default. “We were allotted a task in Sirohi Palace and got the opportunity to have high tea with the Maharaja. That was fun,” he winks.

Focusing on a little more serious life-changing experience, Avneet’s tone tightens up a bit. “I always had a fear of heights. And it was bad,” he says. Also his best experience, Avneet overcame his fear in Rishikesh during a big jump. “My legs were shaking and Arjun Bijlani, the host of the show, looked like a dot from the top,” he adds. Taking God’s name, he jumped and combated his fear. “Now, I can jump off from any location. It’s a great feeling to have overcome my fear,” he says.

The one thing he took in his hands and cherishes it forever is the ability to break free from responsibilities. “I was in the situation where I wanted to escape and found the best way; learnt from that as well,” he smiles. Not like a conventional reality show, there were no vote-outs, no grudges and no abuses on the show. “That was the single-point agenda of the makers — to make a clean reality show,” he says.

During one wish, all hell broke loose when Avneet put up a rock show behind an open truck. Aa la Dhunki, the participants and the crew had nothing but fun during Anveet’s wish! Sharing the story, Avneet laughs, “One of the participants, Nimrika, based out of Delhi, always wanted to become a singer and had relocated to Mumbai. She had written a song Delhi dur ho tum, we changed it to Chandigarh dur ho tum and it was some genuine fun.”

vasudha@tribunemail.com

Telly calling

Pretty much on the lines of Ayushmann Khurrana, with whom Avneet worked in the theatre group, he is all set to go to Mumbai and start his career in the television industry. Although tight-lipped about the same, he does not mind dropping a hint as to how he has already been approached for shows and also a reality show. “I can’t disclose much about it, but soon will foray into the television industry,” he says. Elaborating upon his respect for Ayushman, Avneet says, “He is an idol for us and I have had the good fortune of working alongside him. I hope to make Chandigarh as proud someday,” he smiles. Here is wishing Avneet all the luck for his next dream!

The Government College of Art-10, Chandigarh, is holding a special exhibition as part of its diamond jubilee celebrations

Works of distinguished alumni on display at GCA-10
Works of distinguished alumni on display at GCA-10

There’s an unusual commotion at the Government College of Art-10, Chandigarh. While the frames have been put up, there’re still some volunteers running about, tending to the last-minute details. Posters, paintings, works of some of the eminent artists, renowned names in the world of art, are rubbing shoulders with the works of former principals and faculty.

Diamond Jubilee celebrations are a perfect platform for any college to put its head up, throw its weight around, flaunt its alumni and paint the progress graph.

Starting from the works of founder principal and extending to some of the rare works that needed to be reprinted; says DS Kapoor, the current principal, “We thought this was the only apt way to mark the diamond jubilee celebrations. It was quite tough to collect all the art work though. Many of the people whose works are displayed are no more. We had to meet some of the families.” He adds, “Some of the works were displayed in museums and since they are so highly priced, their keepers asked for huge insurance sums.” For the very few originals that could not be collected, there digital print-outs have been put up. A few of the paintings appear to bring out the old-world charm, there’s a landscape or two and applied art works; starting with the splash of pea-cock, both the bird and the colour by SL Parashar, the founder principal.

There are as many as one hundred and twenty canvases bringing along the gradual leap in generations, from unaided hand works to digitised art. A canvas depicting something as commonplace as monkeys on a branched out tree, to a little tree and a tomb against the vast backdrop of clouds and sands, it is all there. Says a student, “There are one hundred and twenty works by one hundred and twenty artists! Not just collecting but deciding on what works to put up and what to leave; and then deciding on their arrangement was a difficult job.” He adds, “It was almost like choosing the best from the good.”

Some of the works are abstract, while some spiritual. Sitting pretty in the list are the works by Satish Gujral as well. JS Garcha’s tree and its complications, is pleasing to the eye. There’s a depiction of a face, all wrinkled and thoughtful by Rekha Behl. While a mixed media on paper - In Harmony by Jaskanwaljit Kaur, shows a human face in sync with trees, stones and nature. Says Asha Sharma, the artist, “I’ve painted a tiny moon emitting light and placed it next to the half torso of a lady. It stands for how a female remains cool at all times, even in circumstances that have very little to be patient about.” The almost exhaustive list also features Madan Lal, Diwan Manna, Jodh Singh, Prem Singh, Gurcharan Singh Channi, among others.

Tribute to daddy dearest

While Mother’s Day is celebrated with aplomb, Father’s Day too has its moments. We get some stars to talk about their dads and the importance of Father’s Day

Gaurav Bajaj as Aman on Uttaran

“My father has always been my hero. I remember once when I was around 4 years old, we had visited an adventure park in Singapore and as soon as we entered, I saw a huge fountain with an enchanting ball right in the middle of the fountain. Being a stubborn kid then, I wept over having the ball. My father tried all means of convincing and pacifying me, but nothing worked. After seeing how much I wanted it, he immediately went up to the park officials and convinced them to let me play with it for a while and the officials agreed. Seeing a smile on my face, my father was happy too. He has always fulfilled all my dreams and wishes and I’m really blessed that I am born in a family where they have never denied me anything but at the same time have kept me grounded.”

Hema Singh as Imarti Devi in Kairi – Rishta Khatta Meetha

“My father, Raghuveer Sahay was a noted Hindi poet and a journalist.  He was my inspiration to get into theatre and it was through him that I was introduced to the world of literature and acting. He was my best teacher, guide and critic. I remember going for my recitations and theatre practices with him, and on our way back, he would ensure that he listed out where all I went wrong just so that I could turn into a perfectionist. He would get me the best of literature to read and acknowledged all my hobbies and in fact pushed me to do what I wanted and loved. He never interfered in our lives and taught us to live with utmost dignity. I take this opportunity to pay tribute to the strongest man I’ve ever known.”

Preeti Chaudhary as Ambi on Kairi – Rishta Khatta Meetha

“I owe my confidence and my career in acting to my father. I faced the camera thanks to him. I remember I was 10-year-old and we went to Madurai for a short trip. During one of the trips, we happened to encounter a film shoot and being a kid, I was curious to see the camera and the crew closely. My dad somehow managed to make me meet the crew and face the camera. Then, just facing the camera and meeting the crew enthralled me, but now when I think of it, I feel that if it wouldn’t have been for him making me meet the crew of that movie, I would have never been lured to acting and this industry. He is now my backbone and even though initially he was a little concerned about my interests in the acting field, but he was overjoyed after seeing me on the screen for the first time and ever since has been extremely happy that I am growing one step at a time and making a space for myself in the industry.”

Bhavya Gandhi aka Tapu in Taarak Mehta Ka Oltah Chashma

Scent for a father: Bhavya Gandhi“On Father’s Day, I gift my father a perfume bottle, but not one or two bottles; I gift my father 10 bottles of perfumes. My father uses those perfumes throughout the year; he always waits for Father’s Day as that day he gets perfumes from me. My dad is the world’s best father, every year without fail on 17th June I celebrate the day with him. Not only do I remember the day, but my family members also wait for this day. My dad calls the Father Day a perfume day,” says Bhavya Gandhi.

Siddharth Shukla as Shiv on Balika Vadhu

“Seeing me here at this stage of my career, I am sure my father would have been proud of me. He always supported me to do what I wanted, give my best but also play fair. He was a strict father but just looking at his discipline and determination always motivated me to be like him. When I decided to enter the modeling world and move away from a career in designing, he was behind me and encouraged me to take the risk and give it my best shot. It’s been a few years since he has passed away, but every time there is a momentous or important moment in my life, I feel his presence and know that I have his blessings.”

Vivian D’ Sena as Superstar RK on Madhubala… Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon

“I owe my football passion to my dad. As a kid I would admire his stamina and he was my idol when it came to playing football. My father represented the Railways for Football at National level and watching him play on the field; I turned enthusiastic about the sport too and would go out practicing football with him. I remember once I was around 15-year-old and just like every day, my father took me for football practice. After the practice, I was over exhausted and my father told me that we have to go back to the field to practice after a short break. I somehow managed to get out of my father’s sight and as soon as my father diverted his attention I ran back home. I was a total prankster, but my dad ensured that I was trained well and soon looking at his dedication I became serious about what I wanted to be in life and I owe all that I am today to him.”

Sabu Cyril to design the Bigg house

The Bigg Boss house for Season 6 reported to be beginning from October 2 this year, promises to be more spectacular than ever. One of India’s biggest art directors Sabu Cyril is learnt to have been roped in to design and construct the lavish set at the lush-green hill-station of Lonavala.

Over the years, the National Award winning set designer has emerged the most expensive and celebrated art director in the country, having made the sets for movies including Robot, Om Shanti Om, Guru, Wanted, Main Hoon Na, Hera Pheri, Hey Ram, Agneepath, Ra.One, Tees Maar Khan, Aladin, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Malamaal Weekly, Yuva, Ashoka The Great, Pukar and the forthcoming Krrish 3.

Having shifted from Karjat, back to its original location in Lonavala, the Bigg Boss House is a distinctive place where around a dozen reality show participants stay every winter. As per the rules of the show, the house has no television, phones, internet, clocks, pen or paper and no connection with the outside world.

"It’s a unique environment to live in – dreamy, yet frustrating for some! And as time and tempers fly, it grows on the viewers and turns into what I term a house of scandal,” says Bigg Boss specialist Dale Bhagwagar.

The publicist has handled the media for maximum reality show contestants including Shilpa Shetty (during Celebrity Big Brother), Ashmit Patel, Amar Upadhyay, Rakhi Sawant, Kashmera Shah, Vindu Dara Singh, Sherlyn Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Zulfi Syed, Diana Hayden and Pooja Misrra (Bigg Boss), Kashmera Shah (Steal Ur Girlfriend), IshQ Bector (Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachcho) and Natasha Suri (Big Switch).

Café Oye is one destination at the DLF City centre, IT Park, where you can sit, eat, play games and even read while savouring your favourite dish. Although the café opened up four months ago, the owner has reworked the menu to cater to a larger audience. Says Lalit Goyal, the twenty-eight-year-old owner from Panchkula, “I always thought of doing something different from my father’s business; so I set up a joint with a good ambience and cost-effective food.”

The place has interesting sitting arrangements that differ in their designs; the central serving place has a tunneled background. Apart from all this, the brand logo is well thought out with the food items resting inside the alphabet ‘O’ and a male mannequin resting on ‘Y’, and some books are stacked on the ‘E’. “The designing for the logo took a lot of time and thought; the name of the café is a word that is used often by the youngsters,” quips Lalit. The menu includes vegetarian and non-vegetarian pizzas, pastas, grilled sandwiches, and beverages, including varieties of coffees and mocktails and that too at a reasonable price, which can be read through an Apple I-pad on the entry to the café. “Our USP is that the pizzas have a really thin crust with handsome toppings,” says Lalit. There are value meals, which start from Rs 99 onwards and also unlimited meals that include pizzas or pastas with bottomless coke. With a wall dedicated to retro fashion, a small stage for live performances and a good collection of books, Café Oye sure is a place to be in!

Most of the problems we face today are the result of lofty, materialistic aims. There is more to life than just your profession and Rajee Malik’s latest book Dhyan Ke Rahasya is all about that.

Meditation is something that happened to Rajee. “I didn’t know what dhyan is when I started experiencing it,” she says. Three decades later, life has only grown better and she has been sharing her knowledge by guiding people into meditation, writing for various publications. This is her fourth book.

“It’s not like negative situations don’t arise, but meditation keeps the state of mind peaceful,” says Rajee. It is the kundilini shakti in each one of us that remains dormant. Meditation helps one put it into action. “Once the kundilini is active, one can use it on the body to keep young or mind to have the power to read other’s mind or soul to help one in the spiritual journey,” says Rajee. She notes down her meditation experiences in a diary, which finally takes the form of books.

Staying fit the Bebo style

Kareena Kapoor made headlines when she sized down from chubby to impossibly slim last year. The gorgeous unofficial ambassador of the size zero trend in India who has two books, Don’t Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight and Women and the Weight Loss Tamasha, dedicated to her by author and dietician, Rujuta Diwekar, gives us some fitness tips.

Eat whatever you like

You can eat everything you like, be it Chinese food, Thai curry, dessert, chocolate, Dal Makhani or parathas but you have to eat it in moderation.

Have breakfast like a king

Have a filling breakfast that sets your day and eat every two hours after that. I have a glass of milk twice a day.

A big no-no to crash diets

Don’t follow crash diets. Contrary to reports, I didn’t survive on orange juice and apples for Tashan.

Workout is a must

Your diet should be well balanced in nutrients and healthy. You must also exercise for at least 45 minutes everyday.

Follow some good books

Read and follow the book, Don’t Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight and Women and the Weight loss Tamasha. — HRM

Shekhar Suman’s kitchen fad

Despite not being a foodie, actor Shekhar Suman loves to cook. He says, “I'm not a foodie at all. However, I'm a non-vegetarian. I like plain food like dal-chawal. But having said that, I love to cook as it serves as my stress-buster.”

“I'm always cooking and pleasing my wife. My cookery interest began when I was a kid, I would watch my grandmother and mother cook. When you cook for someone and you see them enjoying the food, it makes you feel so joyful and I always saw that pleasure on my mother's and grandmother's faces,” he adds.

Suman is also obsessed with music. He explains, “I'm obsessed with music, whether it's by Mohammed Rafi or Justin Beiber. As I have been into classical music for eight years now. I have a guruji who comes to teach me to sing thrice a week and on other days, I sing on my own. I enjoy dancing and travelling as well.

Queen of pop Madonna reportedly takes an entourage of 200 people on tour, including 30 bodyguards, personal chefs, an acupuncturist, a yoga instructor and an on-site dry cleaner.

The 53-year-old, who is currently on her MDNA world tour, also requests 20 international phone lines backstage and insists on only vegan snacks, reported a website.

Madonna is also said to be particular about the look of her dressing room, which must be draped in a particular fabric and filled with white and pale pink roses and lillies, with the stems on each flower trimmed to exactly six inches. The singer also has her own furniture shipped into the hotel suites. “Madonna requires all furniture be removed from the rooms and replaced with her own pieces that she has shipped in,” a source said. — PTI

Problem child

Troubled star Lindsay Lohan, who is shooting the Elizabeth Taylor biopic Liz & Dick these days, was found unconscious in her hotel room. Paramedics were called for her rescue after producers failed to get hold of the 25-year-old actress but they left after finding nothing medically wrong with her, reported a publication online.

Lohan’s representative has blamed lack of sleep and dehydration for the actress’ health scare and said she will resume shooting soon. “Lindsay has been working a gruelling schedule for the last couple of days. She worked from 7 pm to 8 am. She was exhausted and went back to her room to sleep. Producers were apparently concerned and called the fire department and paramedics but found her sleeping and determined that she was fine, just extremely exhausted and slightly dehydrated. She will be back on the sets later,” Steve Honig, Lohan’s representative, said.

Lohan’s mother, Dina, has also assured fans the actress is doing well. “She’s fine! Long days but she is doing an amazing job,” she said.

The incident occurred exactly one week after Lohan was involved in a car crash with a large truck in Los Angeles. — PTI

Pooja Bhatt to dub for Sunny Leone?

Mahesh Bhatt may have found her the perfect fit for his erotic-thriller. But adult star Sunny Leone's dialogue delivery does not accurately fit the bill.

With Jism 2’s release less than six weeks away, Leone's difficulty with Hindi has forced the film-makers to a make quick change in their plans.

Producer Pooja Bhatt will now lend her voice to Leone's character. “Leone does not know Hindi sufficiently. Of course, she will have difficulty in dubbing. Also, she has a usual foreign accent that makes it very important for a desi dubbing artiste to speak up for her,” revealed a source close to the film.

While Pooja wasn't available for comment, dad Mahesh confirmed the news and added, “I recommended to Pooja that she should dub.”
