Cool drink!
Outrageous names, exotic ingredients and appealing presentation—making a cocktail is not just about mixing juices but combining the science and art of mixology to come up with a winsome package
Jasmine Singh

This is when you want to enjoy a tall glass of a drink that falls between the category of liquor and something of a fruit punch. This is when you want to wash your throat with a fancy looking cool drink. This is when you look at the two words on mentioned on a jazzy looking menu card--mocktails and cocktails. What started as names that would make people blush, Virgin Mary, Sex On The Beach, these summer coolers are now a separate and quite sought after identity at hotels and restaurants with special leaflets dedicated to them.

Interesting names Blue Bonfire, Solar Eclipse, Grasshopper Cocktail, Snake Bite, Incredible Hulk, and even better concoctions, cocktails and mocktails are surely the drinks to hit on.

Crash course

They definitely bring relief from the raging heat, but at the same time cocktails illustrate the trends prevalent in a particular era. Says Ashish Manchanda, from Advisure’s Hospitality, “Making cocktails these days are not just about mixing juices and ingredients, going into the science of it. Here foam, cooking cocktails through liquid nitrogen helps to introduce flavours in seconds.” Ashish is talking about something like whiskey with ice tea compressed with liquid nitrogen! “It is the chemical mixology that is the new thing with cocktails,” adds Ashish, who organised a workshop on Global Cocktail Trends where they had Brandy Crusta, made with Martell Cognac topped with nitrogen-infused Cointreau foam. The Criss Cross Daiquiri was served with Havana club rum and pearls made from Martell cognac sweetened with the Scottish whisky liqueur, Drambuie!

Fruit punch

All hotels and restaurants have a dedicated section for cocktails and mocktails, and also followers for it. “They are mostly youngsters,” laughs DebDip Chatterjee on the mention of customers who like to order mocktails and cocktails as the first thing. Dev also agrees that the growing popularity of these drinks has led them to create interesting concoctions like Flipper, Orange Caprioska (Cocktail), Green Apple Melonard and Orange Mélange (mocktails). The new trend has moved to the usage of fresh fruit bases for both the coolers,” he says.

What’s in a name?

Cocktails and mocktails have always had interesting names designated to them. On popular demand however, hotels like the Taj have come up with interesting options. Praney Kapil, restaurant and bar manager with Taj-Chandigarh sees people ordering the usual classics like Mojitos and Margaritas. “Other than we have some interesting inventions like Only Jattis, Burfilly Chaa for Rs 450 and shooters like Acid and B 52. “Kaali at Lava bar is the most sought after cooler with a cumin base. People who travel a lot are always ready to try new things. No longer it is the drink of shy girls or pretending-to-be-grown up guys. Coolers are like and preferred by all.”

As you like it

Okay, so we know it these coolers are a youngster’s drink. They are reasonably priced, starting from Rs 400 and have low alcohol content. You can feel a bit young and a bit macho with them on the table. Shares Manny Sekhon, 16, “I prefer cocktails to any hard drink. These are refreshing and have some bit of alcohol which is okay. Tom Collins Cocktail and Cassis Screwdriver are some interesting concoctions.”

Playing a meaningful game
Actor Sudeepa Singh doesn’t mind getting less screen space as long as it helps her
grow as an actor

connecting thread: Mridula Jain. Photo: Himanshu Mahajan

It was a moment of irony when the women kabaddi team was left stranded outside their hotel after the players were handed over the World Championship Trophy last November. The players had to hire auto-rickshaws to reach their homes. This is the incident that made Sudeepa Singh grab the offer of a film based on kabbadi.

The actor who was earlier seen in Action Replayy and Punjabi flick, Ek Noor, feels it is this project, Kabaddi Once Again that will provide the much-needed impetus to her career.

“The subject of the film is so substantial that it pepped me up to perform my best,” comes from the actor, who was in Chandigarh recently to promote her film. The obvious social message of the film is sports should be encouraged.

“Not many youngsters know that kabbadi is the main game of Punjab but negligible efforts have been made to endorse the game.” Kabaddi Once Again is the story of a kabaddi player who plays for the honour of his village. The male lead of the film is Verinder Singh Ghuman, who is the number one body builder of India.

Since the story revolves around the male lead of the film, Sudeepa hasn’t got a lot of screen space. “But that doesn’t matter. What counts is the relevance of the subject and how much justice I can do to the role. It might be a small role but it’s significant to the story of the film.” She is happy to get meaningful roles and shifting from mainstream cinema to regional doesn’t bother her. “I might get cameos in Bollywood but that doesn’t allow me to showcase my talent or work to the best of my abilities. Punjabi cinema provides me the apt platform to grow as an actor.”

Her inclination towards regional cinema, she says, is also for the fact that the films are now enjoying multiplex releases. “The dynamics of cinema in Punjab has undergone a sea-change. Films easily get producers these days, who are ready to spend on the post production of the films. A film with a great storyline will be done justice to, only if it reaches out to the people” Her last film Ek Noor made her bag the Best Critics Award only because it was well-received by masses.

success mantra
Dare to dream
Mona

Success doesn’t come to you, you go for it! And, Mridula Jain, managing director, Shingora is one such example. Established in 1986, Shingora today is one of the biggest manufacturers and exporters of scarves, shawls and throws. Gap, Banana Republic, Donna Karen, Hugo Boss, Armani are few of her buyers. The woman behind this very successful company shares her vision and work that helped her set up a successful venture.

Dare to dream

Because of my kids, I had decided to work from home. Running a thriving coaching centre for 10 years, I didn’t want to stop at that. But, once they were independent, I decided to step out. Married in Ludhiana, seeing the big industrialists, I would often wonder if someday I could make it big like them. And, I worked for it!

Turn dreams into reality

Dreaming is as important as is putting the idea to work. I gave a good thought to what I wanted to do. Ludhiana being a wool hub, I thought of taking up shawls because as a young, fashionable woman I couldn’t find anything to match my style. Today, I proudly say my shawls are what I am.

Confidence in self

When I started, shawls were protected under the handloom category by the Constitution. I knew nothing about looms. Since my husband had wool business, I learnt slowly, steadily. Also, there came a time, when doing shawl business wasn’t possible on looms totally, I played an important role with my competitors (whom I call my colleagues) to free it from handlooms. Importing machinery, building a strong team, by and by things fell into place.

Grab the opportunity

Once decided, we worked to make our shawls distinctive. Hand painted, phulkari, unconventional colours ensured amazing response within the first two years. When I accompanied my husband to a meet, I approached the authorities to help me take my products abroad. And, I got to do it. Exposure to European market taught me that it makes sense to take products to international fairs and I got assistance to take my stuff to Pret-a-Porter Paris. And, the results have been phenomenal.

Cultivate a team

To begin with, I knew little of business and production. Not only I learnt it by doing but also enlisted help. My husband, Ashok Jain showed the way. My sons Amit and Anuj did textile and finance education from the US. Not only one needs to work hard but also have patience to reach one’s goals. We firmly believe and practice in nurturing a positive work culture and sustainable growth.

Irfan’s new fan

The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb has been an “enormous” fan of Irrfan Khan and says he roped in the Indian actor as he had the sophistication and commanding presence needed for the role of Dr Ratha.

“I have been an enormous fan of Irrfan for a very long time. I first saw him in The Namesake, The Warrior and in TV series In Treatment. For Dr Ratha, I needed someone who projected sophistication, had lot of strength and a very commanding presence and Irrfan fits that bill. He is in the first half of the film and in several scenes,” Webb said.

The 37-year-old director is reluctant to categorise Irrfan’s character into good or bad but says he wanted to work with the actor for a long time and ‘Spider-Man’ provided that opportunity.

“I would not call his character a good guy or the bad guy, I would say he has a job to do and he has started about doing it.” Irrfan, now a regular face in Hollywood films, has so far been reluctant to talk about his role in the superhero movie.

Webb, however, is more than happy to provide details about the character.

Celeb Point
The razzle-dazzle of IIFA
Divya Dutta

This is fun too, to write this write-up sitting wherever I am. Right now I am in super company. Sitting next to her and posting this write-up to you. And she says ‘hi’ to all of you. Atta gal! Full of life and spunk and so very spontaneous!

Well, I have been living out of a suitcase, literally. Shimla, Dalhousie and then Singapore for IIFA. I and Vidya Balan were the last to reach as I went straight from shoot! This time, I took my family along. Being nominated for Stanley ka Dabba was a high and going with family is a total plus. I met Vidya on the flight. It was after quite some time. We had last shot for the Kurkure commercial together!

The IIFA was a star-studded affair in Singapore. It was very well planned and the sheer magnanimity of it was truly amazing. A limousine assigned for every celeb. Well looked after and taken care of!

I chose to wear an ethnic dress for the event and guess it was a good decision. Everyone seemed to come up to me and compliment! And who doesn't like compliments?

The powerful well-suited men, glamourous actors and celebs in their best gowns and drapes on the red carpet, it was all so grand! I knew why it is called the glamour world. Literally I saw it there and was mesmerised even though I was part of it. To see so much talent together under the same roof celebrating and acknowledging their fraternity was overwhelming!

After the eve, everyone asked if I was going shopping on my free day, but somehow I, in a very unladylike way, am not a shopping person. I buy what I need. Sightseeing and feeling the pulse of a place is more my thing, be it a village or a hi-fi city!

So, I chalked out the plan to go to the universal studio, see all the amazing Hollywood sets with fun rides! And yes, the fun was to go with ma and Rahul. And then the night safari—watching all the wild animals at an arm’s distance was so much fun. Skydiving and under water came next. All fitted it all in a single day!

We came back home in the night and barely slept. And now on the sets of Heroine, shooting and sharing my thoughts with you. They ask me how do you manage such a hectic life and I answer, “This is my lifeline. I work hard and enjoy too. I would not know how to live another way…”

Road Rage
Gear up for a divine ride
Simranjeet Gill

A motorcycle experience can be rhythmic to divine to cosmic depending on the rider, riding attributes, co-riders, road conditions, weather conditions, traffic conditions and luck. A motorcycle principally is a two wheeler used for transforming the rider from mundane to individual. How exactly does that happen can remain a mystery, but what can assist, we definitely can talk about.

Be rested: Motorcycle riding is more physically demanding than driving a car or a truck. It becomes impertinent that the rider is in good shape before taking on the saddle. Getting enough rest is a requirement for any type of trip, but especially if the motorcyclists are riding for extended number of hours per day, they should expect to feel fatigued during every 12-hour cycle. During that time, it is best for riders to consider stopping to eat, take a break or catch up on their sleep.

Feed adequately: As is the case with any good traveller, a rider should know his body cycle and feed himself/herself accordingly. You can really turn some members of the group sore by un-necessarily stopping for relief.

Know your machine: Being the rider, you should know your machine. So all the hunches and gut feelings that this wire might snap, these tyre treads won’t hold, the spark plugs might need replacement etc etc, should be addressed the days before. Not that you have a control over what might happen, but at least you would be satisfied having done your bit to make the whole event mechanically eventless.

Right gear: Your gear should be right on. Right on as in it should be befitting the weather conditions, keeping safety as paramount. The gear should be complete and comfortable with all its aspects - as boots, pants, jacket, gloves and helmet - accounted for.

Comfort riding: The rider and the motorcycle should fit right in. Should that demand that certain customisations be done within the defined purview of safety, they should be carried out without delay.

Fuel & air: Fuel up and check air pressure the day before especially for the early morning rides. You don’t want to risk a closed fuel pump and reach RV point with an empty tank and under-inflated tyres.

Lastly when on the ride, always remember that you are riding to enjoy and there is no enjoyment in fixing your broken bike by the roadside while other motorists zoom past. Not all days are the same, there are good riding days and there are bad riding days – so don’t expect the sun to shine every time you take on the saddle. Ride cool with emotions in check and you’re good.

Karan Gupta’s exhibition My 36000 Words displays some fine, unedited shots of nature and human emotions
Manpriya Singh

It’s hard to get interested, at first glimpse. There’s a picture or two from a travelogue, human face depicting emotion, a flash of lightening, pebbles…the similar depth and difference, till Karan Gupta cuts in, “I’m totally against any kind of photo editing as I disagree with that and I have a regular digital camera.”

That pretty much sums up as to what stands apart in My 36000 Words; thirty six photographs, and like any other, each worth a thousand words.

The second year, electronics engineering student from VIT, Vellore, says while almost handing out his mini digi-cam. “I was gifted this and since then I have been clicking whatever interests me and inspires on the spur of the moment.” He adds, “None of the photographs have even been cropped. Though the final product is no doubt beautiful but I believe it is the duty of the photographer to get the perfect shot and not the software editor.”

For instance this bolt of lightening that he wanted to capture in Fury of The Heavens. “I must have taken at least five hundred shots to be able to click the lightening.” Or the Eternal Fame, at this temple in Vellore. “I wanted to click this prayer lamp but there were so many people in the temple.” Half an hour and fifty shots later, he was satisfied.

Moving on, there are the timeless ghats of Varanasi, pebbles shot together, long exposure shots to generate hallucinations, photograph of shading on paper, a burnt cigarette packet. “I’m strictly against smoking. My friend gave up smoking so we burnt his cigarette packet and I clicked it.”

Some of the captions, however, are missing. “For some of the photographs, I just couldn’t think of anything. So I wanted to leave them open to the audience’s interpretation.” For instance, this shadow of an old man in the corridor. He adds, “I keep traveling, so, in this exhibition, I must have depicted at least four or five places.” Apart from Chandigarh, there is Varanasi, Leh, Pondicherry, Vellore and Bangalore.

Beauty at its best
Skin deep: Yaana Gupta
Skin deep: Yaana Gupta

Yaana, who has made India her home, is a model-poet-composer-singer and actor. The Czechoslovakian is famed for her flawless skin and curvy figure. She gives us tips on beauty, inside and out.

  1. For your hair, always condition your hair after you shampoo it to keep it smooth.
  2. You must oil your hair, but keep it for not more than 30 minutes because it clogs the pores otherwise. Use hair tonic if you do not like oil. Use essential oils in base oils.
  3. Protect your skin against the sun and harsh environment. Prevention is better than cure.
  4. Kaajal is my favourite make up. I use it as eyeliner and eye shadow as well. And I love gloss to go with it. Sometimes, I like bright coloured liners.
  5. I think writing, exercising, making music and listening to music are great stress busters and you feel happy inside, so it shows on your face. Right now, am enjoying the rains and that makes me so happy.

Sujoy Ghosh: Badla isn't a sequel to Kahaani

After tasting success with Kahaani, director Sujoy Ghosh is currently writing his next film titled Badla, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah in lead roles. "I'm getting a lot of calls from people who seem to be a little confused & rightfully so. Since my incoming is not free & steep, let me clarify. The script that I'm writing for is called Badla, which, if I write well, will have Amitabh Bachchan and Naseer ji & the Balan," the 46-year-old director announced on Twitter.

He also clarified that the film isn't a sequel to his National Award winning film Kahaani. 'All depends on the script. The tagline of BADLA was... Only god forgives. But now I can't use it anymore. There's a movie announced with the same name. And finally, BADLA is not the sequel to Kahaani. That's another story altogether." he added.

Accident prone: Lindsay Lohan
Accident prone: Lindsay Lohan

Actress Lindsay Lohan, who earlier said that the truck cut her off, is now claiming that her car's breaks had failed when the accident happened. The 25-year-old was rushed to the hospital for minor injuries after her Porsche smashed into the trailer truck on the Pacific Coast Highway in Los Angeles, reported a website.

The actress said she was informed that the brakes were replaced two days before the accident. She is also sticking to her earlier story that a truck cut her, although the truck's driver has strongly denied it.

"She did apply the brakes but the Porsche failed to slow down and she could not prevent the accident," a source said. "The accident happened after Lohan swerved into the lane I was occupying and crashed into my vehicle from behind," said the truck driver, James.

He also accused Lohan of trying to bribe him, which she denied as well. "Him and the guy took me across the street and told me this was some kind of famous person and they didn't want to be in the media," James said.

Lohan's spokesman said that Lohan was completely co-operating with the police. "She has answered all their questions and provided them with everything they have asked for," he had said. — PTI

Actress Neha Dhupia is all set to share screen space with Emraan Hashmi in Karan Johar's next home production, directed by Rensil D'Silva . "Yes, I have been signed for this film. We will announce the film with title and cast very soon. It is about individual paths, there is no predominant love story. It is too early to talk about it (story line)." Recently, Neha attended Karan Johar's 40th birthday bash.

Hollywood beauty Catherine Zeta Jones says her co-star Tom Cruise is great in Rock of Ages

The 42-year-old actress, who is married to screen legend Michael Douglas, said she loved getting the chance to work with Cruise, reported a website.

I work out and I have a ballet barre in my gym. But every time I do it I think, 'Why don't I do this all the time?' "I get lazy so working on this film was a bit of a shock to the system. Champagne for the lady...

Rapper Chris Brown reportedly sent champagne over to former lover R&B star Rihanna when they found themselves in the same club at the weekend. The former couple, who split in 2009 after Brown assaulted his then-girlfriend, sat at different tables but onlookers say they were very aware of one another inside the club, reported a publication online.

"After Chris made his way into SL with a group of friends, Rihanna pulled up with her own group. The infamous exes sat far enough from each other to not be able to talk, but close enough to keep an eye on one another. Chris sent Rihanna two bottles of Ace of Spades Champagne. DJ Sinatra had both Rihanna and Chris dancing at their tables," an onlooker said. The meeting comes a few weeks after Rihanna came face-to-face with Brown and his current girlfriend Karreueche Tran. — PTI

The leading lady
Rupal Tyagi
new role: Rupal Tyagi

Actor Rupal Tyagi is glad with her big break as one of the leads in Zee’s new show Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke. Playing her age, Rupal hopes her show makes it big.

Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke is your big break. How do you feel about this role?

Yes and I can’t tell you how happy I am to bag this outspoken girl’s role. Though it’s been a while since the shooting began, it still continues to be a surreal experience. I did play a protagonist in my first show Hamari Betiyon Ka Vivaah, but it didn’t work out in a grand way.

Why did you choose this show?

I fell in love with my character Gunjan as the role has every shade I have ever wanted to play. Gunjan is confident, bold, emotional, vulnerable and a modern girl living in Mumbai. There are quite few similarities between her and me. I feel like myself on the show.

What do you not like about her?

I completely relate to her and the problems she faces. She is a bit spoilt by her mother who pampers her to death.

You are a spoilt brat too?

Yes! There are a lot of similarities between my on-screen mom and my real mom. We sit, drink and party together!

How different is it from the roles you have essayed earlier?

In my last serial Dil Mill Gaye, I played a dumb bimbo. It was quite a task getting into the character. Gunjan in Sapne... is so natural that it is fun, as well as challenging to play her.

What is the one dream that you want to fulfill?

Frankly, I am living my dream right now. I was dreading playing the typical bahu. Fortunately, I got this show and the best part is my character goes through a lot of changes, with a graph of its own.

When Jethalal denied it, Boman hit him with his umbrella.  On the lighter side Boman Irani, who had come on the sets to promote his film, wanted to take Daya Ben (Disha Wakhani) for a ride on his scooter because Boman’s mother loves the serial Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Sharman Joshi says, “This is one show that is constantly funny without getting crass. Kudos to Asit Modi for keeping it clean and maintaining the top position.”
