An ode to sandwich

Recently the sandwich celebrated its 250th birth anniversary. Dishes like parantha, dhokla, vada and dosa went into depression, "Yaar, hamara birthday koi yaad hi nahi rakhta." The sandwich was named after John Montagu, the forth Earl of Sandwich. Sandwich is a small town in Kent county in south-east England.

In Indian or Punjab’s history, one doesn’t remember any king or city in Punjab in whose remembrance the parantha was named. As far as the sandwich’s story goes, people say 250 years ago the Earl ordered beef slices to be served between the slices of bread. He never thought that in times to come the serving will become the most popular convenience food.

I don’t know much about the eating habits of Earls and Dukes but I have tried samosa and tikkis between the bread many times. Practically, any vegetable or meat can be stuffed between bread slices to make a sandwich.

A restaurant boasted of serving anything in the world. Two friends went to this restaurant and called the waiter. One friend asked to the waiter, "You say you can serve anything in the world." "Yes sir," replied the waiter proudly. "Bring us a sandwich of roasted elephant ears". The waiter rushed inside the kitchen and came back after couple of minutes. "Sir, could you order something else?" "We knew you couldn’t have served elephant ears." The waiter replied smugly, "Sirs, we have got elephant ears but we have run out of bread."
