Genial, genteel… Genelia!
Ashima Batish

Post her marriage, actor Genelia D’souza will be seen for the first time on television with a reality show titled The Chosen One

It had to be something out-of-the-box to inspire the blissfully married Genelia D'souza to face the camera again, just a few months after her marriage. "I got a call from UTV Stars to host their show The Chosen One, which is about girls aspiring to be in Bollywood. I could relate to the subject; to how desperately girls want to be a part of the glamour world, to the efforts they put in to prove their talent," says Genelia, and there she is, all agog about her second outing on the tube.

The Chosen One is a reality show that will have young girls as contestants. Genelia will not only host the show, she will play mentor to the contestants and guide them throughout. "It was four years back when I first hosted a show on TV. Competition has become more intense since then. A chance lost is lost for good." She realises how important her role will be as a mentor. "I have to guide them about styling, make-up, and more importantly about attitude, which I feel differentiates an actor from a star."

The qualities she is looking for in the winner are good looks, great dancing skills and of course, acting skills. But will the winner get a break in Bollywood? "Reality shows provide a sound platform to youngsters to showcase their talent, but once the show ends contestants have to wage their own battles. The best will not be denied a place in Bollywood for long."

For that matter, the contestants in the reality show have also come from the smaller towns of India. Genelia quotes the example of a girl from Moga, "If not a for reality show, how else a girl from Moga would have got so much of exposure."

Besides TV, she is also taking out time to shoot for Rock the Shaadi. "Marriage is still a priority. Much against what girls say; life hasn't changed much after marriage. I am taking out time to relax but at the same time, I am also spirited about my comeback. Rock the Shaadi is the perfect comeback material." We hope it is!

Roadies fame VJ Bani shares notes about her upcoming show MTV Drivve with Nano & much more

Bold talk: VJ Bani
Bold talk: VJ Bani. Photo: Manoj Mahajan

Rough, edgy and aggressive — that is the perfect definition of VJ Bani. From Chandigarh, this Roadies 4 contestant comes back to launch MTV Roadies Footgear collection at Mochi-17. Dressed pretty with a pink carnation in her hair and dew-kissed pink lips, she sits together in a candid conversation.

"When you enter hotels they have these huge flower arrangements, I just pulled one out and pinned it in my hair," she explains the rather contradictory flower in her hair. Her tattoos tend to speak louder than her words. Twenty in number, her favourite is rise and shine tattooed on her wrists. We manage to figure out that one of them is incomplete. "It's a Japanese Koi fish. Symbolic of aggression and survival instinct, it pretty much projects everything about me," she says.

Heavy liner in her eyes and a stud shining close to her lower lip, Bani does not mind cracking jokes and laughs to her heart's content through the conversation. Currently busy with photo-shoots, the wild child moves back to the focus of her visit. Though not one of the regular run-of-the-mill shoe-crazy girls, Bani took her creativity to another level when MTV gave her the option of designing shoes, "Do you know how much goes into making them? You have fabrics, shapes, sizes and colours." "Like this," she quickly adds pointing to her skull-shaped ballet flats, "we had sixty varieties of these shining golas and had to pick one."

Show time

Upbeat about her upcoming MTV Drivve with Nano, Bani is gripped because it's a fun show. "VJ Jose, Ria, Nikhil and I have been given regions where we will guide a group each to survive in a small budget. Should be fun," she says.

Talking about fellow Roadie Ayushmann Khurrana, whose debut Vicky Donor is spinning success stories each day, she reveals how she missed the opportunity to see the film. "He did invite me for the premier, but the guest list was long and I got too late to be in the first-come-first-served group," she grins. "Oh when friends become stars, they and their starry tantrums," she jokes. Not weaving any Bollywood dreams, she is positive about the new, young film-makers making their mark and is waiting for the right opportunity to come her way.

For Bani, it is the paneer bhurji made by her nani, which she misses the most. "Whenever I come here, I keep running around gathering Chocolate Gateaux from Monica's, Cold Coffee from Nik Bakers and my chicken products from MG Stores," she says.

Of course, if it's Bani, not referring to Roadies is just not an option! Irked by the change, she herself, despite being a part of it and making it big due to it, Bani feels there is too much going on that makes it tough to keep track. Refusing to be part of another reality show, Bani talks about how editing changes the concept of the show. "See, you have to understand that there are cameras all around us and so many times, one forgets that they are there," she says. In a show of one hour, when the cameras are around for twenty-four hours, editing makes all the difference. "So many times, they will show what they want to as a lot more than what is shown happens at Roadies," she adds.

Giving meaning to her four-month research, she leaves us intimidated with her attitude in life — positive.

Ring-side view
The latest buzz in the fashion circles is that of chunky rings
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

From a delicate piece of jewellery to the classic jumbo-sized accessory, rings have become the key focus as far as fashion is concerned. And if you are tuned in to the latest in fashion jewellery, chunky rings are hard to ignore. From Oslen Twins to Kristen Stewart, closer home we have Farah Khan flashing them. And for the Punjabi women, bigger is definitely better!

"Small and simple is out while its big and flashy that is in," says Pam Nanda, jewellery designer, from Panchkula. She adds, "From chunky bracelets to layered chains it's the enlarged cocktail rings that are in vogue. And the best way to achieve the edgy, fashion forward look is to integrate the simple shapes and bold colours."

Well, we need not say that for a woman it's the visibility of the jewellery that matters. Then be it a ring or a bracelet, that piece of jewellery becomes a fashion statement! Says Bhavneet Kaur, businesswoman from Mohali who deals in diamond jewellery, "Chunky rings are feminine, yet trendy and they are calling the shots this season. They were everywhere during the wedding season and are still ruling the party circuits." She too has a modest collection of such rings. "I have a penchant towards Mughal-inspired rings and those with kundan. A favourite in my collection is a lotus-patterned ring, which I picked up from Jaipur."

While you let your fingers do the talking, chunky rings can be girly, flirty, edgy or chic as they come in different designs. "Bigger the rings the better, seems to be the mantra of fashionistas," says an employee at Khadi in Sector 17. She adds, "Victorian-styled rings, Kundan-worked rings and those with a single stone are popular among women now. Rings with stones the size of mini-pappadams are also doing well."

Talking of designs and colours, Pam says, "These rings come in a variety of elegant stones, colours and shapes to complement the wardrobe. Kundan rings with a dull gold finish are what most women choose, as it goes well with ethnic wear."

If you like the glitter of gold, then look out for rings with animal motifs - panther-shaped, rabbit-shaped, peacock-shaped… all of them are quite popular amongst women. While some are studded with diamonds and semi-precious stones, others have a copper finish to give it an antique look.

Tip Talk

  • Chunky rings don't quite look good on all fingers. They look best on long, slim ones.
  • Your fingers must be well-manicured to flash the big size rings.
  • If you are choosing to go hip with a supersized ring, keep in mind that the rest of your look needs to be subtle as well. Avoid matching your chunky ring with other chunky pieces.

The hospitality industry in Chandigarh grows with each passing day. Joining in is The Altius, a boutique hotel, which boasts of designer elements in each area

We sit and wonder from where, at what price and how the material for the opulent interiors of the Velvet room must have been procured! It takes a few minutes to get over the beauty of one corner of the room and shift the gaze to another. Then some time is devoted to admire the ceiling. It’s all so perfect, from the cushions in golden and blue to a full length intricately carved mirror covering an entire wall, disco balls like chandeliers; the Velvet room explains the best—why people behind The Altius claim it to be a boutique hotel!

The same fact becomes all the more apparent at the eighth level of the hotel, which recently opened on the Chandigarh-Zirakpur highway; to be precise, at the roof-top restaurant. From this point, one sees the vast green expanse of Chandigarh and the foothills of Shivalik range. “The name Altius is derived from the Olympics motto - Citius, Altius, Fortius. Altius means the highest and by far, the hotel boasts of the highest point in Chandigarh,” says the managing director Ginny Chawla.

A restaurant from the popular food and lounge chain, Ten Downing Street (TDS) covers two floors of the hotel. The décor of the restaurant is in tandem with the colonial theme. There are paintings that capture a few scenes of the British Raj; a couple of fake pistols are framed, a fireplace occupies some space and a corner is decorated well by a golf metal hat. “There are designer elements in each area of the hotel, which makes it different from what is already there in the city.”

The interiors are the best bet to draw people here for the first time, but to ensure that it becomes a regular hang-out place for them, food is very important. Chefs, they claim, have been brought in from various five-star hotels in the country. “Besides a great view, you will get grilled food at the roof-top restaurant,” says Sundeep Madhok, the general manager.

There are 21 rooms, each different from the other; another characteristic of the boutique property. The tariff begins from Rs 3,500 and goes up to 6,000. Is it too much for a great view of the city?

More the merrier

Almost one restaurant opening in Chandigarh every month might testify people’s love for food, but it’s also indicative of the city’s ‘honeymoon market’. The term is used by people in the hospitality industry to explain the nature of food-lovers in the city. They will flock to a restaurant but once there is another addition, the crowd deserts the former. But Vinod Reddy, director, Ten Downing Street, is unfazed, “I haven’t heard of any restaurants throwing its shutters down in the city. More the merrier! It will encourage us to improve the quality as well as taste of our food and ensure that people go back home with wonderful memories.”

It’s happening
Feelings on canvas
Manrpriya Singh

There’s a reason why most of the themes are recurring in each of the works of Monika Tanwar, Nomida Kalda and Shivani Parmar. An exhibition of paintings by the final year post-graduation students of arts broadly revolves around love, expressions, relationship, emotions.

Understandably, there are women painted in varied whims and fancies and fantasies. There’s one called Flowing Life and yet another Love, try to capture the bliss of a lover and his beloved. Feelings depicts a woman deep into conversation with an animal, sharing her innermost feelings.

The works depict women in various moods; while waiting, happy, sad, in a relationship, pouring her heart out, her equation with nature, animals and so man.

Shares Namika Kalda, “All three of us are classmates awaiting our final year master’s results.” The subjects and their treatment, share a similarity if not sameness.

She adds, “I basically used very bright colours. The idea was to show the flow of women and their feelings. We suppress so many emotions and there is so much hidden inside, even in relationships women are never able to show themselves completely and communicate freely.”

The flow of colours finds a parallel in the flow of emotions. Chips in Shivani Parmar, “Whatever I have painted I kept my own mother in mind, she was my inspiration.”

They might be awaiting their master’s results but they could wait to put up the joint exhibition. Says Namika, “I have been working on these fifteen works for almost two and a half years now.”

Moving on, there’s oil on canvas A Silent Love, trying to put into colours the equation a woman with a domesticated pet. Among the liberal dose of feminism, few others speak of issues traversing genders.

What Can I Do shows the dilemma of a human being confounded with alternatives. Another shows a man clinching onto a musical instrument. Each of the works or change in works seamlessly blend and give way to the next canvas.

Flirt with fashion
Jasmine Singh

Flirt, the word can whip up uncountable reactions from the pretty women around. But now Chandigarh- based designer Ritu Khosla asks the ladies to slip into the word with style as she launches her flirty collection Aaital. Young, vibrant and trendy, Ritu’s collection offers styling and dressing options for university, college and office going crowd. Flirty collection, this sounds interesting. What do we have under this tag? “Short dresses, Victorian gowns in floral prints and soothing colours,” shares Ritu who is inspired by her daughter.

It is the young brigade that is setting fashion trends, defining style and Ritu gets all the lowdown from her daughter. “I have designed keeping in mind the college, university and office-going girls as well. For studies I think, denims with flirty tops are a good combination. Spahegettis and boat necks look nice. I don’t prefer skin show for students, so this can be left for evening parties,” says the designer who has been designing exclusive wedding wear for almost 11 years now.

Summer is not the time to experiment a lot. “Short and simple is what my collection is all about. It is comfortable, stylish and feminine.”

Ritu is one designer who likes to keep in touch with her customers through her Facebook and web page. “This is like the new trend. I display my work on, so my customers go through it and then place their orders accordingly. I get a lot of orders online from different places where customers send me their measurements and any particular designs if they want.”

One for the bride...

Shining in exquisite bridal wear and dazzling jewellery, five models hit the ramp even as the shutterbugs went berserk. Bringing together the latest bridal trends, Cleopatra Beauty Spa and Make-Up Studio in association with Gitanjali Group launches the Royal Jewel: Bridal Trends 2012-13 at Maya Jewels. High cheekbones and gajras, coupled with chandelier earrings, the models displayed the perfect blend of tradition and contemporary look.

Talking about the latest trends, Richa Aggarwal, Director, Cleopatra, says, “Since the brides are already so decked up, make up is going light with air brushing.” With latest colours revolving around red, golden, purple and green, the move towards royalty and dressing up like a true-blue queen are now possible. Flowers too seem to be growing everywhere. “Earlier, only orchids were in, now gajra is also making a comeback,” Richa adds. Thanks to availability of the latest product range in make-up, highlighting is also becoming an important aspect in bridal make-up. “Today, concealing a heavy face is not a problem at all. You can create cuts and accentuate the face from just about anywhere,” she says.

If you thought that the perfect look could be achieved with just the outfit and the make-up, jewellery tends to make an outstanding impact too. Go big, go bold and watch all heads turn as you display the uncut polkis and artistically crafted jewels to decorate your neck, hands, hair and ears. Inspired again from royalty, the Nizam collection from Gitanjali Jewels, showcases the exotic pieces crafted to perfection. Sharing the details of the collection, Vipil Waghela, Regional Manager, Gitanjali Jewels, says, “The whole collection has been created in polka, kundan and gold to make your day special.” — TNS

First-day-first show
Agents of entertainment

Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) are assigned the task of monitoring extra-terrestrial activity on the earth. Things get strange when J can’t find K, then finds out his friend has been dead for over 40 years. In an attempt to save young Agent K’s (Josh Brolin) life, Agent J travels back in time to 1969 to stop his murder.

Good job

Will Smith looks fresh and young as usual and his comic skills are amazing. Josh Brolin has played the role of young agent K very nicely. Rest if you have liked the earlier two, you will love this one as well.

Keerat Sandhu, student, PU

Smart move

This trilogy has dealt with the time travel story very smartly. I don’t want Men in Black series to end because it has a great storyline and even the cast plays their roles so well that everything looks real.

Mohit Verma, bank employee

Worth it!

Although it is great to see Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones back on screen but one wonders why can’t they move beyond all this? But everything is overshadowed when you feel that the movie is totally worth it and a fun ride.

Traditional touch
Jasmine Singh

You thought only youth-oriented channels, MTV or Channel V, can create fashion icons? Back in Punjab we share a chit-chat with our own traditionally contemporary style diva —Satinder Satti. In Chandigarh to be a brand ambassador of a fashion store, Satti has defined fashion on stage.

"Punjabis don't accept anything that is too contemporary, at the same time I feel times have changed and women need to look their best," says Satti, who defines her own styling. "I combined both traditional and contemporary wear in a neat manner that looks trendy and graceful as well."

Satinder has put in her best in her album Rubaru and will be performing in Virginia shortly. "I have combined my passion and style into one. When I go abroad I am aware of the fact that I am representing a culture so I dress up suitably," she adds with a smile.

Anchors in Punjab are going jazzy with their looks, but for Satti nothing can beat an elegant salwar kameez.

What are you expecting from Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa?

I have been keen on doing dance reality show which I have mentioned before too. I was happy when I got the offer for JDJ. It is thrilling for me. For me it would be a learning session as I will be exposed to many dance forms and styles. New clothes, image change would be an added incentive. It is very exciting.

Why did you chose Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa?

JDJ is the best platform I can get. Nothing can be better than JDJ for a celebrity.

Which judge are you more excited about Madhuri Dixit or Karan Johar?

Both, as they are both my favourite.

Dance wise would you say you are a good dancer or not?

I won’t say I am a good dancer as the styles I would have to do on the show would be new for me as I have never done that in my life. But I am learning every day. I will learn a lot on the show.

Which dance forms most eager to learn?

Salsa would be very feminine and I love the American and Latin styles the most.

How will you manage work?

It will be very hectic but it is ok. One should look for new experiences in life.

What do you think are your chances of winning?

I don’t know about my chances of winning as whoever will perform well will win. — HRM

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is May 26...

This year will have a positive impact on your mind. You will be able to count on rich pickings and excellent occasions for new contacts and collaborations. Those born in the last decade will try to delegate a task, which is too time-consuming. It’s important to get your money’s worth. If you spend your income as quickly as you earn it, put yourself on a budget. Seek a better paying job. Resist making impulse purchases. You can satisfy your need for entertainment by borrowing free materials from the library, or renting inexpensive movies.

Mercury tends to make a person verbose, critical, and high strung; the person born under the sign ruled by this planet may even give Leo a run for his money in the egotistical department. You’ll probably be upset by some news; this could come from a credit institute or an impatient supplier. Don’t give importance to your own problems as you risk not having a real vision of things around you.

Make serious efforts to improve your personality. Money gains will not be up to your expectations. Do not be rigid with your family members, as it may mar the peace. You will learn new things if you attend seminars and lectures. You have a tendency to set your objectives much higher. Do not get disappointed if results don’t come as per your expectations. This will be upsetting if you jump to conclusions and take unnecessary actions.

Stick to your budget to avoid financial constraints. Don’t force your opinion on friends and relatives as it may not go in your interest and you can get them upset. New moneymaking opportunities will be lucrative. New friendships will develop. Love life brings hope. Travel opportunities should be explored.

Mood: Vulnerable. Compatible signs: Cancer, Scorpio. Lucky colours: Red, beige, maroon. Lucky days: Friday and Wednesday. Lucky Numbers: 8, 17, 26. Lucky gem: Iolite—the gemstone of Vikings. Lucky flower: Marigold

Grand promotions for Teri Meri Kahaani

Producer director Kunal Kohli is leaving no stone unturned to promote his upcoming film Teri Meri Kahaani (TMK). The filmmaker has planned various promotional activities for the film around the globle along with his stars, Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor.

The promotions will kick-start on June 7 at the International Film Academy Awards, Singapore wherein both Shahid and Priyanka will give individual dance performances. Thereafter they will travel to Melbourne (Australia) for the opening of the Indian Film Festival to be held from June 11 to 22 where they will promote their film.

Kunal Kohli informs "The film is releasing on June 22 and it's a great honour for us that the Melbourne festival will close with a private screening of our film. We will be guests of the State of Victoria, Australia and also have lunch at Melbourne Cricket Ground. All of us are cricket buffs so it will be thrilling to be there. Shahid and Priyanka are both excited to showcase their film in the emerging film markets around the world."

Kohli, believes that it's important for Indian films to be exposed to international festivals as it contributes to the growth of Bollywood cinema. "We are going to have premieres in London, Toronto and Dubai and numerous other, big and small cities visits in India. Film festivals such as Cannes, Stuttgart (Germany) or Melbourne help create awareness about Indian films all over the world. Of late, even foreigners are showing interest in Bollywood films. When I was at Stuttgart last time, the Germans knew me! I was pleasantly surprised. I credit Yash Raj Films for marketing their film and hence popularizing Indian cinema in Europe," adds Kohli.

Endless!
Kashmera Shah's play goes the Hollywood way

Many movies have shot two to three different endings and climax sequences and decided which one to add in their projects at the last minute.

It's a common practice in Hollywood to shoot two movie endings, take the opinions of focus groups and a cross section of people and retain the one more accepted. Bollywood too has caught up with a similar trend off late.

But what surprises us now is that Kashmera Shah's latest play Tere Ghar Ke Samne has adopted a similar practice, albeit with a difference.

Over a few Sundays spread across weeks, Kash's play has been running to packed houses at various theatre outlets, while experimenting with not two, but three different endings. Almost every week, the viewers get to see a different climax to her play. Whoa!

What's more! What started as a one-off experiment is now becoming the norm. "Earlier we thought we'd do this for a couple of weeks and then stick to the end the audiences find the best.

But this experimenting process gets the actors and audiences alike so kicked, that we are continuing with it," reveals Kashmera.

Thanks to this, a select percentage of audiences have even returned for an extra round of the play, just to see how it will end in their second outing.

We are often amazed how you manage to begin such wacky trends Kash, but it's cool as long as you continue to amuse and entertain. More power to you and your wackiness girl!
