Elderly man dies in accident
Dera Bassi, April 29 He was trying to cross the road near the Jashan palace when a truck coming from the Lalru side hit him. He died on the spot. The deceased could not be identified. The body was kept at the Civil Hospital in Dera Bassi for identification for 72 hours. The driver of the truck fled the spot. The police registered a case in this regard. |

Lifer dead
Ambala, April 29 The deceased was identified as Krishan Kumar of Kesri village, near here. The jail administration came to know about the incident this morning when other inmates informed it. The jail authorities informed the Deputy Commissioner. ACJM Poonam Suneja visited the jail and recorded the statements of some inmates. The cause of the death could not be ascertained so far. According to jail sources, Krishan Kumar was suffering from asthma. The police informed relatives of the deceased. A murder case was registered against him at the Pinjore police station on March 26, 1998. Jail deputy superintendent Sanjay Bangar said the body was sent to the Civil Hospital here for post-mortem examination, which would be conducted by a board of doctors. |

Two families step forward to adopt abandoned child
Ambala, April 29 An unknown woman had left the child along with a letter close to mosque. The woman did not disclose her name and address in the letter. She said in her letter that she was not able to bring up her child due to poverty and that she was leaving him abandoned with the hope that some family would come forward to adopt her kin. She had also mentioned in the letter that the circumstances had totally disappointed her and no alternative was left but to end her life leaving her son all alone. The maulvi of the mosque who noticed the child had informed the sarpanch of the village. Later, the matter was reported to the police. On the direction of Deputy Commissioner, the child was handed over to the Child Line Welfare Society (CLWS). The police has also registered a case against unknown mother in this regard. Mushtaq, a resident of Zaffarpur village, who has two daughters, had approached the administration for the adoption of the abandoned child. Another muslim couple, resident of Dhanora village, who already has five girls, also expressed its willingness to adopt the child. |
3 held, theft foiled
Panchkula, April 29
The accused were identified as Krishan Kuma and Shankar, residents of Gopalganj in Bihar, and Santosh Kumar of Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh. They were in the age group of between 20 years and 23 years. At present, they were residing in the Ashiyana flats, allotted by the Haryana Urban Development Authority a few months back. According to information available, a police team led by CIA inspector Karamvir received a tipoff that the accused planned a robbery and were carrying weapons. The police swung into action. As the accused arrived at the Sector-11 market, the police nabbed them. One of them managed to escape, but was nabbed later. Inspector Karamveer said investigations were on and they were hoping to crack more cases of theft at locked houses and showrooms in various sectors. A case was registered under Sections 398 and 401 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act at the Sector-5 police station. The police recovered a countrymade pistol, an iron rod, a razor and 25 grams of red chilly powder. They were produced in court, which remanded them to police custody for five days. This was the second time that the police nabbed the accused before they could commit the crime. It had arrested two accused planning to murder a businessman after he refused to pay ransom. |

A student of St John’s High School, Sector 26, Karandeep Singh Kochhar wants to become a professional golfer, of an international level. The 13-year old golfer, hit the headlines after playing the first IGU (Indian Golf Union) competition at the after of five and later putting himself at number one in the merit list standings in category ‘D’ in the IGU (Indian golf union) categorized tournaments, number one in the merit list standings in category ‘D’ in the albatross junior tour tournaments, number one in the merit list standings in category ‘D’ in the US Kids golf in India “My family is my source of interest in my game. Football is my second love but golf is what I love and live for. I want to be a professional golfer and that too of an international level. Since my childhood, I have been learning the game and hopefully, one day I will master it,” said Karandeep Singh Kochhar. The ace golfer, last year, represented the nation at the 32nd Asia Pacific Junior Golf Tournament, held in Thailand. He was the only player from the city to get selected in this category. He finished 10th in the tournament. Last year, he also remained, number one in the merit list standings of category ‘C’ of The IGU and number 3 in the merit list standings of category ‘C’ of the IGU. “I am looking forward to some more international tournaments. Hopefully, I will bag it soon. My main focus is to work on all aspect of the game both mentally and physically. My mentor is helping me a lot and after my academic session, I will again hold the club to learn more about the game,” Achievements (of his major tournaments): n

Himal bags chess title
Chandigarh, April 29 A student of the GGDSD College, Sector 32, bagged the title after scoring 5½ points during the championship. Arvinderpreet Singh wins Punjab ‘A’ chess championship
Fatehgarh Sahib, April 29 Vikas Sharma secured second position and Vivek Astir scored third position in the championship. Prof Bikramjit Singh Sandhu, honorary secretary, Punjab State Chess Association, said that Arvinderpreet Singh, Vikas Sharma, Vivek Astir and Pardeep Arora would represent Punjab at National Chess Tournament to be held at Tirupathi, Andra Pradesh, from May 18 to 28, 2012. He added that the association will make all out efforts to organise state-level chess tournaments in the remote villages and announced that the process will be started from Roran Wala Khurd which falls near Indo-Pak border. As per the results of the final round Gursher Singh lost to Vikas Sharma, Arvinderpreet Singh beat Harbans Singh, Jagpreet Singh drew with Chetan Bansal, Vivek Astir beat Anirudh Trehan, Pardeep Arora beat Varun Kumar, Raminderbir Singh beat Naveen Kumar, Vibhor Sharma beat Jeet Singh. Airtel Tigers win by 151 runs
Panchkula, April 29 In the first match, Airtel Tigers defeated ACC Lions by 151 runs. After elected to bat first, the team set away a target of 208 runs after loosing six wickets. Sarang Vinayak Kanade (52 runs) and Vinay (63 runs) were the main run getters for the teams. Bowlers, Praveen and Rajeev Rampal took three and two wickets, respectively. In reply, the ACC Lions team failed to achieve the target and bundled out on a total of 57 runs. Sarang Vinayak Kanade, for his all round performance bagged the man of the match award. In the second match, the Infosys team defeated Aircel by 83 runs. Batting first, the winning side scored a total of 150 for 8. Sahil Aneja scored 44 runs while Nikhil Walecha contributed 24 runs, in team’s total. Aircel’s bowler, Mast Ram, was the puck of the bowler after taking here wickets. Chasing the target, the Aircel team was bowled out for 67 runs. In the third match, the IBM Warriors defeated MY FM by 90 runs. Batting first the winning side scored 196 runs in 20 overs while the loosing side managed to score 106 runs in the allotted slot. In the boy’s (56kg) bouts, boxer Sandeep thrashed his opponent Jahul Alam by a point while in another fight of boys’ 60 kg group, Neeraj of the SD Club outclassed boxer Rana Kamaljeet.
