Self defence for survival

Ladies, this one is for you! President Pratibha Patel wants that school girls should be trained in martial arts so that they can defend themselves in violent situations. It is not possible for every lady to be a Black Belt so here are few tips on self preservation.

The elbow bone is the strongest point in your body. If the threatening baddie is close enough, jab your elbow into his face or stomach. It will gain a few second in your favour. Run away or yell for help!

As soon as you get into your car, lock the doors and move off. The baddie has been watching you, don’t make yourself a soft target.

In case a baddie is already in the car, don’t resist. Follow orders, start the car and accelerate and ram into something, anything! Smash the car, the air bag will save you. Blow your horn. The resulting commotion is in your favour.

Parking lots are always dangerous places for women. With under-ground parking lots coming up, the danger will increase. Walk towards your car. Check the cars parked next to yours. Is it a van with sliding doors? Was it there when you parked? Is someone in the van? It's a simple operation to pull a woman into a van and move off.

Using your elbow to counter an assailant will throw him off guard

Never take the stairs in an underground parking. They may be badly lit, dark and lonely. It's an ideal place to be accosted. Take the elevator. If the elevator is not functioning, go back to the garage manager, or mall security and ask for an escort.

In wide open parking space outside the new malls, if a baddie stops and asks for your wallet. Do not hand it to him. Reach into your handbag, withdraw the wallet and throw it away from you and the baddie.

Now, here is another advantage of the seat belt. The horrific episode of a young women being pulled out of a car in Gurgaon and taken away is fresh in our minds. Most cars today come with 3-point seat belts in the rear seats. Strap yourself in and it won't be a simple matter to be pulled out. Tell the driver to lock all doors. Drivers of all late-night taxis should have central locking installed. Press one button and all the doors are locked. Being in a car, with all doors locked and additionally being strapped in, will be a tremendous safety factor.

Violence at the night food centre. Close it down. Violence in Gurgaon against a woman, stop women from working late. You got a headache, cut off the head! That is the knee-jerk reaction of the authorities. They have come up with a solution without comprehending the problem, thereby creating another problem.

You will be best off taking care of yourself rather than depending on anyone to be of help. Happy Motoring!
