Glam, glitz & muscle
Eight fights per night and a new city each month. Apart from the basics, Raj Kundra, alongside Shamita Shetty, introduces the fighters. They are the perfect definition of everything SFL is all about

Picture this. Fourteen broody men, walking one by one in front of a large excited audience, taking off their shirts and posing for the shutterbugs… no this is not the scene right out of a Hollywood flick, but how the mighty Raj Kundra presented his fighters, experts in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Mind you, two women, set to take on an army of men are also a part of the ferocious few.

All set to launch the Super Fight League(SFL) 2 in Chandigarh, Raj, the man behind the concept, is upbeat, not only because SFL is soon becoming his second name, but also because he is ready to welcome the little bundle of joy.

The fighter steps up

Dazzling alongside the dear jijaji is Shamita Shetty as she walks in wearing a fitted red blouse, hugging blue denims and heart-pumping peep toes. Of course, her perfectly well manicured nails gather the attention as she looks after her blow-dried hair. Of course, the media frenzy takes over as she soon disappears behind the larger-than-life screens. The wait begins. The hall soon fills with muscles and mass as men, apparently from different nationalities, gather in. Soon, the hosts, also two extremely good looking men, start talking and not so later, Raj Kundra walks back in with Shamita Shetty on his side. A proud Punjabi, Raj leaves no opportunity to stand alongside his bare-chested fighters for the photo op! Finally, after the cameras have had their bit, we manage to catch hold of the tall damsel for a quick interaction.

Lady in red

With flawless white skin and the frame to go with it, Shamita is a delight from the word go. Currently helping sister Shilpa doing up the new arrivals space, Shamita talks passionately about the latest love of her life - interior designing. “It was at a point where I helped re-decorate a club in Mumbai when I figured out what I wanted to do,” she says, with a dazzling smile, which shines through her pink lips. Leaving her film dreams, the lady took off to London for a course and studied it till she got the hang of it all. “I am currently interning under an architect in Mumbai,” she adds. But yes, she does not mind explaining how it’s the story of ‘once an actor always an actor’. “When you talk of interior designing, it is about creating something beautiful,” she says. And ‘beautiful’ registers several times during the course of the interaction. “It’s like making something when nothing exists, like a movie,” she says, with stars in her eyes. Having put in a lot of effort and labour in learning the techniques and developing an aesthetic sense of interiors, Shamita is taking her time in deciding how she wants her life to shape up. “I don’t plan on what I will do tomorrow, everything will take its own time,” she says, as she goes back in the chair, making herself comfortable.

Baby bandwagon

Excited about the impending fatherhood, Raj is all excitement and happiness. “Oh I am very old school. We had the opportunity to figure out if its blue or pink, I chose not to know,” he smiles. Planning to spend the next couple of months just staying by Shilpa’s side, he sure is learning the daddy lessons. “Shilpa is the one who is taking the call on the name and of course Shamita is busy with the interiors,” he adds. Also ready with a Bigg-Boss styled reality show, Raj is bent on building a name for the SFL, the current passion guiding his life. Our ovation for women, man, babies and fights!

Word power
Mona

“It’s easy to be a lyricist today, what’s challenging is to give quality work,” says lyricist and singer Ajay Jhingran. In Chandigarh on Friday to release Theatre Age anthem at the Government High School-24, Ajay is quite upbeat about it. “One needs a song to soothe oneself in trying circumstances. Our anthem is such,” says Ajay.

The song goes, Aao kasam ye kahyen hum, insaniyat nibhayen, insaniyat jagayen, insaniyat bachayen. As much are kids happy to have their ‘own’ song, as is the man behind the group. “The song carries our spirit,” says Zulfiqar. But it has not been easy for Ajay to put two decades of journey into a single song. “A lyricist has lots of responsibility if he or she is ready to shoulder it,” says Ajay, who has penned lyrics and also sung in movies like Khoya Khoya Chaand (2007), Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Welcome to Sajjanpur and Billoo.

“The power of the word is immense. The same word can kill or revive someone,” he says quoting old songs that not only entertained but gave a message of social change as well. Why is it missing today? “Materialism has seeped into all walks of life, including filmdom. Sadly, today minting money is the priority over class cinema.”

There is enough work in the industry. Ajay has been singing and writing. And it is Sudhir Mishra’s next venture that keeps him occupied. “It is soulful songs that I aspire for,” says Ajay, who is inspired by poet and lyricist Neeraj. Theatre Age Anthem will be launched at Tagore Theatre on Sunday and Ajay is going to be very much part of the evening at Bharat Muni Ceremony, which will also see the staging of the play Tota Kahani. The recipient of the award this year is Zulfiqar Khan.

Film: Housefull 2
Director: Sajid Khan
Cast: Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Riteish Deshmukh, Shreyas Talpade, Asin, Jaqueline Fernandes, Zarine Khan, Shazhan Padamsee, Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor
Rating: Above average

Just before the release of his movie Housefull 2, director Sajid Khan had lambasted the critics for not understanding blockbusters and rating them low. So let us not subject the movie to the critical eye and judge it purely and solely on the one and only entertainment criterion. Does the madcap multi-starrer that has a battery of heroes and heroines and as many character-actors entertain?

The answer surprisingly is yes. Indeed, the movie that begins with two brothers (Randhir Kapooor and Rishi Kapoor) squabbling over their legitimate and illegitimate status, and threatening to hook the richest groom for their daughters appears nonsensical from the word go. Chunky Pandey as the Aakhiri Pasta, attired in garish suits and mouthing crass one-liners, even makes you squirm. Thus the intention of the director beeps loud and clear. Take the movie and its characters with a pinch nay bagful of salt. Hence, don’t raise your eyebrows in disbelief when you watch the multibillionaire’s son and good-for-nothing scums graduating from the same institution or when you encounter lovely lasses keeping venomous reptile and crocodile as pets.

In a way, the movie takes a dig as well as pays tribute to Bollywood masala magic in the inimitable Sajid Khan style. So not only are there references to erstwhile movies but also characters. For one, there is the good old bad man Ranjeet, the wasana ka pujari, incidentally also the father of Sunny (Akshay Kumar). In a film set in UK can you fit in Jagga daaku the dacoit so central to many Hindi films? Yet Sajid manages to do that as well. For the director of irreverent yet funny, whimsical yet amusing cinema has only one purpose - to amuse you. Of course, the comedy doesn’t sustain all through. But there are many rib-tickling moments packed into the mindless confusion and chaos that knows no logic or rationality. The director not only doesn’t want you to think but also does not allow you room or time to think in this potpourri that has all the usual ingredients. There is love; there are songs including the sizzling item song Anarkali Disco Chali. And guess what...there is a fair dollop of heart-touching emotional drama and a bit of moralising too. But just when you are about to get carried away by the emotional quotient, Sajid takes a break, taps you and once more takes you into the world of slapstick humour. And once again reminds you cinema is a business of entertainment, of fantasy and of making unbelievable watchable!

So forget the inconsistencies, reserve your grey cells for something more profound. Just sit back, relax and watch the comedy of errors unfold. It may not fold you up in laughter all the time, yet scores on entertainment value. Strictly for those who don’t take life (and cinema) too seriously.

First-day-first show
Housefull 2

Housefull 2— The Dirty Dozen is the second super-star packed installment in the Housefull franchise. It is the story of four fathers, four daughters and four prospective son-in-laws. Each father wants his daughter to marry the richest son-in-law. Each daughter thinks she is marrying the richest son-in-law. Each son-in-law is pretending to be the richest son-in-law. Each character is flawed, unscrupulous and extremely entertaining. However, none of these people can stand each other and all of them are under one roof, in one house.

Hopeless show

The movie is a forced comedy and overall the multi-cast does no good for it. Expectations of this sequel to be better than its part one just fell flat.

— Bininder Saluja, law student, PU

Male tale

Comparatively, the male actors have done a better comic job than the female cast. The music is good, especially the track Anarkali Disco Chali, and Malaika looks sizzling.

— Nihal Singh, student, DAV College

Akki rocks

Akshay Kumar steals the show along with John Abraham and Ritiesh Deshmukh; it is a pretty hilarious movie but not that entertaining.

— Jigyasa Kapoor, housewife

Mirza—The Untold Story

Mandy Takhar and Gippy Grewal(R) in Mirza— The Untold Story
Mandy Takhar and Gippy Grewal(R) in Mirza— The Untold Story

Mirza—The Untold Story is based on the legendry love story of Mirza and Sahiba. Mirza is played by Gippy Grewal and Sahiba by Mandy Takhar. Mirza and Sahiba fall in love with each other at a very young age. However, one of Sahiba’s brothers, Jeet (Rahul Dev), disapproves of their relationship and forcefully distances them apart. Will Sahiba betray her lover?

Action-packed

It is a realistic movie with a good story and lots of action. Honey Singh’s music and his villainous act are an icing on the cake. Gippy Grewal as usual looks dashing.

— Ravinder Deol, law student, PU

Worth it

It is a worth watching movie, especially for the youngsters. Gippy as the lead is just so perfect for the role.

STAR TRACK
Twice lucky

Anushka Sharma
great Going: Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma has been roped in for Yash Chopra’s next untitled film, in which she teams up with Shah Rukh Khan again. The model-turned-actress says that she never imagined that she would get another chance to work with the superstar.

Anushka made her debut opposite Shah Rukh in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. “I didn’t think I will get a chance to work with Shah Rukh again after my first film, but I did. So, I am the lucky one. I look forward to it. Mr. Yash Chopra is an institution in himself literally. I guess I would get to learn a lot from that film,” Anushka said in an interview.

“I have not started the shooting yet. I will be joining the crew from May onwards right after my birthday, which is on May 1. So I will start shooting from May 2. I am very excited. I think it is any actor’s dream to work with Yash Chopra,” she added.

Chopra’s film also features Katrina Kaif.

The 23-year-old also signed Vishal Bhardwaj’s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, which is a completely different film. Directed by Rony Shaha, the comedy is being produced by Bhardwaj and it features Imran Khan in the male lead.

Anushka, who has recently finished the first schedule of the film in Rajkot, says the film is different from what she has done so far. “I am really happy to be working with Vishal Bhardwaj. We just finished a schedule in Rajkot and we are back. He really is a genius director. He knows how much of what you need to use and portray that in his films.”

“For me, it was a little different. The kind of films that I have done was different from this one. I was nervous in the beginning, but I think it’s going really well and I am really looking forward to it.” — IANS

Comedy all the way…

Abhishek Sharma tickled everyone’s funny bone with his humorous take on Osama Bin Laden in his debut laugh riot Tere Bin Laden in 2010 and the director says he will continue making comedies. The film was a comic satire on America’s war on terror and the realities of the post-9/11 world and loved by all.

Sharma says he is not going to make serious films anytime. “I am inherently a comedian. I am happy making comedies as they are the purest form of entertainment. It enables you to see the audience reaction immediately and not wait for a review. There is a connection with the audience and that is not possible to achieve if I make a film of a different genre,” Sharma said.

“Only something major can take me away from comedy films. Humour is part of my writing. Even when I am writing anything serious, there has to be a touch of humour in it,” he added.

The film was a surprise hit and collected Rs 8.25 crore at the end of its theatrical run.

“I personally was surprised with the collection. The market then was not so good for small budget films with no big names. But 2010 was a major turning point with Peepli Live, Love Sex aur Dhokha and Udaan. That year distributors got confidence in our kind of cinema. Most of the big films bombed badly at the Box office. But I never expected such a major success for Tere Bin Laden,” he said.

Sharma, who is just one film old says he wants to stay away from mainstream cinema. “I don’t believe in mainstream cinema. It is either good cinema or bad cinema. I don’t want to make films that are not entertaining and which do not have any view point. I don’t believe in making meaningless cinema,” he said. — PTI

Variety is the spice of life

Jacqueline Fernandez
being different: Jacqueline Fernandez

Jacqueline Fernandez sizzled in Murder 2 and now she plays a girl-next-door in Housefull 2. She talks about wanting to do different roles and turning down films.

Multi-starrers are ok

Housefull 2 is a multi-starrer but the girls have acted well and we have fun roles. I love Asin’s comic timing and she could give any guy a run for his money!

Turning down films

I turned down Raaz 3 because it is a very intense and bold script and I didn’t feel ready for it. Housefull 2 and Krrishh 3 were happening at the same time and I had to honour my prior commitment.  I want to do different roles and I want to be versatile.  I like that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor are stunning and glamourous and yet they are cast in many films because they are talented as well and they have done a variety of cinema.

Relationship rumours

I am a private person so I keep my life to myself. I will not answer any questions about my relationships. People can say what they want. There have many stories about Riteish and I but the truth is that he is my oldest friend here and he makes me comfortable. I am friends with Genelia too and they make such a great couple.

Favourite movies

I am a romantic person and I love movies like Gone With The Wind, Ghost, and Legends of The Fall. I see myself doing a complete romantic film.

Shraddha’s beauty essentials

Shraddha
Glowing secret: Shraddha

Bollywood newbie Shraddha Kapoor is one of the sweetest faces in town. She is Lakme’s face too.

She feels that inner happiness makes people glow but make-up can help us look prettier too. The leggy lass tells us all about her make-up essentials.

Kajal: That’s the most important make-up article which every woman should carry in her bag. You can wear kajal in office, when you are going out or going to exercise and it goes with every kind of attire.

Liner: Women should always carry shimmer liner in their bags as you can easily apply it whenever you make a plan to go partying or for dinner. I love gold and bronze and I have some great eye-shadows in these colours.

Face wash: This is one thing which many don’t carry but they should carry because it’s very important to wash our face every six hours and even before applying make-up.

Lip gloss: I think we should carry two glosses: one should be plain and light for day or office wear and the other should be a richer shade with some glitter for night and party wear.

Cheek artist: It gives your cheeks instant glow. Apply it at parties for a touch-up.

Not picture perfect

Hank Baskett and Kendra Wilkinson
Ups and downs: Hank Baskett and Kendra Wilkinson

Former Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson says her marriage to football player Hank Baskett is not picture perfect. The 26-year-old left modelling in 2009 to get married but says she and her husband are prepared to take the rough with the smooth.

“We seriously believe in love. It has been almost three years, and we are still strong. We want to be lifetime partners. Everything is not picture perfect. We have been through so many ups and downs. We have talked about couple’s therapy, but we can talk through anything. We put everything behind us. We are therapists to ourselves,” she said.

Wilkinson also said that she and Baskett, parents of two-year-old son Hank Junior, refuse to use the word divorce.

“We don’t even allow that word to exist. We are hanging on there. We are looking at the longevity,” she added. — PTI

Over the top

Firebrand actress Rozlyn Khan, who went topless to promote breast cancer awareness last week, has now gone a step further and released a video on the internet, displaying a six-step self-examination to help women diagnose the initial symptoms of breast cancer. The four-minute video which went viral beginning this week has been aesthetically shot and can prove vital for early detection of the malady. “We all know that early detection of breast cancer can save lives. However, many never bother for a check-up till their issues reach a stage where medical intervention becomes an absolute necessity,” Rozlyn points out.

“Through my simple self-examination video, I intend to spread maximum awareness, inform and educate everyone about the malady and do my bit to save lives,” adds the actress. Rozlyn also makes it a point to warn all Bollywood glam girls and fashionistas who go for implants for breast enhancement.

Clever move

The promotional team for Hate Story is very clever. The film is directed by Vikram Bhatt and stars Bengali actress Paoli Dam. The promo says that it is too bold to be shown on television and this will definitely draw audiences to cinemas!

In bad taste

The first look poster of Kya Super Kool Hain Hum is out and it is terrible taste with oodles of dirty double entendres and the bad reviews the film received have been flaunted! When will they grow up?

Mallika Sherawat Unhappy girl

Mallika Sherawat has an item song in Tezz. Director Priyadarshan is not happy with it because he wanted Sameera Reddy to do it! He might drop it altogether from the final cut!

Final cut: Mallika Sherawat

First look

The first look of Dangerous Ishq in 3D was launched at a suburban multiplex with the entire cast in attendance with director Vikram Bhatt. Karisma looks smashing!

Good luck Priyanka

After Priyanka’s nameless friend taking potshots at Karan Johar, the latter has fired back by tweeting! He has retaliated for the first time against an actor! Oh, we wish Priyanka gets out of this mess!

Another item song

Kareena Kapoor has an item song that she is doing in Heroine and it is actually called Halkat jawani! She is very excited about doing it and giving the current item songs a run for their money!

Karanvir Bohra Battling insecurities

With Harshad Chopda’s entry in Saubhagyavati Bhava on Like Ok, lead actor Karanvir Bohra aka Viraaj is least affected.  He says it won’t make much difference to him whoever enters the show because as an actor, what he bring to the show or his character is more important to him.

Raza Murad to play Shah Jahan

Veteran actor Raza Murad will essay the role of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the TV show Veer Shivaji on Colors. He feels the role will give him a chance to portray another side of him as he is always seen in a negative role.

Gaurav Kapoor Going mad over cricket

Best side of two worlds

The evil saas on Colors’ new show Kairi, Imarti Devi is a professor of speech and acting in National School of Drama in Delhi. She has taken a special two-year leave from work to do this project. Hema Singh feels that her character actually brings in the age-old humour through her satirical comments on bahus.

Bollywood dreamsSanjay Gagnani

Sanjay Gagnani made his debut in Bollywood with the film Rakhtbeej.  He was last seen in Colors’ show Hamari Saas Leela. If sources are to be believed, he will be playing an important role in Madhur Bhandarkar’s next upcoming flick Heroine. He will essay the role of a famous Bollywood star in the film.

Karan Singh Grover Making news

Karan Singh Grover sure knows how to hog the limelight. After his being in the news for his marriage to Jennifer Winget, he’s the hot gossip for being the host of the Jhalak Dikh Laja Season 5 on Colors. Rumours or fact, he will definitely be the perfect eye candy for the dance reality show.

Voice matters more

Singing reality show Indian Idol enters its sixth season and the three judges — Salim Merchant, Anu Malek and Sunidhi Chauhan — say the focus this time will be on the power of the voice and not on the looks.

This time they will concentrate on the voice only as looks can happen gradually with grooming. The show will be hosted by Husain Kuwajerwala and Mini Mathur. Considering the show is mostly wrapped in controversies, we can just hope this one goes on without much temper tantrums and the judges playing favourites.

Moving to greener pastures

Ankita Bhargava who was earlier seen in Sony TV’s Dekha Ek Khwaab will now enter Ravi Ojha’s Sajda Tere Naam Ka aired on Star Plus. She will play the role of Unnati who is Aaliya’s (Deblina Chaterjee) trainer and Ranveer’s (Shaleen Bhanot) ex-lover. She is a cop and will join hands with Ranveer to track the underworld don and also train Aaliya.

Sisterhood diaries

Sukirti Kandpal, Priya Wal and Roshani Shetty are BFFs. The trio, who were part of Balaji’s show Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani, gel along very well. And it was Sukirti and Priya’s presence during the launch of Colors’ show, Kairi, wherein Roshani plays an important role of Imarti devi’s second bahu, that the trio was spotted chatting and having fun together.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is April 7...

Expect some changes in 2012-13. Number seven and Neptune, under Aries, makes you intelligent, strong-willed and determined. You will reach the pinnacle of success in this year. Conflicts in partnerships may stare at you on your face. Though you may experience inclination towards comfort, you will need to concentrate on completion of projects. You may meet influential people having the advantage of good expression. There is a possibility of developing business ties abroad. You may look forward to harmonious days at workplace. Your ideas may be shared with colleagues and there could be an orientation towards completion of long pending work. Physical strain and hard work could take its toll on you. You will be a free bird, and although you are religious-minded, you will not let orthodox views and customs, bind you. The only thing you should worry about is getting stuck in a deep rut if you decide to do nothing.  Some traditions need to end before you can start on a better pattern. You will be able to handle difficult situations with ease and authority. You think logically and will not get swayed away by religious beliefs.  Do not be afraid of new ways.  You should stop being nervous about your chances to take a big leap forward. Money needs and ‘moral decisions’ may dominate discussions, choices and priorities with what appears to be rather good outcomes ‘overall’ if patience and sound judgment is applied, with family members. You may succeed in financial matters. However, the financial benefits that you may get could be a result of careful, meticulous hard work. Carelessness may result in losses.

Several chats, mails or important talks are likely to unfold. Avoid expressing strong opinions that can be taken out of context if passed on. Change your plans cautiously if you must when deciding what, how, when to do things with friends. You may have stress due to hardwork or mental conflicts. You may want to spend time on yourself. You may suffer deterioration of health. Overseas travels will form an important part of your life.

Mood: Easily confused, distracted and overloaded. Compatible signs: Scorpio, Taurus, Libra. Lucky colours: Beige, Chocolate. Lucky days: Monday, Wednesday. Lucky numbers: 2, 7, 11, 20, 29. Lucky gem: Pearl, White sapphire. Lucky flower: Dark red Rose. Suggestion on birthday: Donate steel utensils in the marriage of some poor girl.

Jeetendra came into the spotlight in 1967 with Ravikant Nagaich’s Farz, which went on to become a golden jubilee success. The tee shirt and white shoes he picked up from a retail store for the Mast Baharon Ka Main Aashiq number in Farz (sung by legendary Singer Mohd Rafi) became his trademark.
