GOOD MOTORING
Of accessories good and bad
While some car accessories make life easier for the driver, others merely add to the cacophony and are dispensable

Indians love noise! You cannot go anywhere where rather crude disco music is not thumping. Car Music systems come with a 1000-watt output, hardly necessary. We never stop blowing the horn. As soon as a light turns green, every driver’s finger is on the horn button. It serves no purpose but we love the cacophony.

Probably the most unnecessary accessory in the market for cars is a reversing horn. As soon as you engage reverse gear, a hooter starts toot-toot! It’s an irritating sound and the absurd part of this fitment is that it is fixed under the bonnet, yet it is supposed to warn the people behind!`A0 In any country where public law and order is taken seriously, if you had this toot-tooting fitment, the police will haul you up for being a public nuisance!

Indians are also coming to this conclusion. High-rise apartments are the way to go these days. In a block, there could be 200 apartments or more. The Noida and Gurgaon, high-rise apartments are even larger. The accompanying photo is from one such apartment complex. Why? Anyone from the outskirts of Delhi, who has to catch the early morning Shatabadi, has an hour-long drive to the New Delhi station. So, about six o’clock on a cold winter morning when you are snuggling under your quilt, about a dozen cars will be toot-tooting and waking up the entire block. Get rid of it. It would also be in the spirit of the Supreme Court judgment recently, "sound sleep is a fundamental right!"

The other day I was driving with a friend who has a super music system in his car. "What would you like to hear?" he asked.

"I have over 20 CDs of every type of music with me" And where were these CDs? In the trunk of his car! Summer is around the corner and a car parked in the sun for a couple of hours heats up hot enough to bake your CDs. If they were stored in your glove box, they may survive because the cabin is air-conditioned. Not so the trunk. Even while on the move, the merciless Indian sun will warp the CDs. The answer to this could be a pen drive. It stores a huge amount of music and can be carried easily in your pocket. Another useful accessory for your car is a rain guard. It’s a plastic moulding that fits on the doors above the window. It allows you to lower your windows just a wee bit to allow fresh air into the cabin.

It also allows the hot air to escape. As the air expands it has no way to escape, it will warp some of the plastic bits in the car. It will also keep the interior cooler if all the windows were rolled up. This makes it easier for your A/C to cool the cabin. Happy Motoring!

Clarification

The photograph used with the Good Motoring Column on March 11 ("Will the act impact our unruly traffic?") was purely illustrative. It did not in any way imply that the individual concerned was inebriated at the time the picture was clicked.
