Open Air Theatre a picture of neglect
Hemant Kumar

Kalka, March 11
The Open Air Theatre of Northern Railway Institute here represents a picture of neglect. Officials of the the Northern Railway, Ambala division, have done nothing to renovate the 60-year-old building. The theatre has a projector, but it has been lying defunct for the past 30 years. Celebrities such as Sukhwinder Singh and Pankaj Beri have performed here.

The officials concerned said a proposal regarding the renovation of the building had been sent to the higher authorities, but nothing concrete had been done so far.

In 2003, Rakesh Tandon, the then DRM, Ambala division, during his visit to Kalka in connection with the inspection of the Kalka Railway Station, had expressed his concern over the deplorable condition of the Northern Railway Institute, including the badminton hall, library, table tennis hall, Children Park and Open Air Theatre and had directed the officials concerned to get these buildings renovated, but to no avail.

Two years on, Ambala railway station yet to get a facelift
Suman Bhatnagar

Ambala, March 11
The then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced in the 2009 budget that the Ambala Cantt Railway Station would get a facelift.
She had stated that a bottling plant would also be set up in Ambala district to generate employment.

Even after two years, both the projects are hanging fire.

The residents of Ambala were expecting escalators, cloak rooms, AC waiting rooms, cyber café, food court, mechanised parcel handling, entrance and exit gates as per international standard and a few other facilities generally available at a world class railway station, but things did not fall in place.

Passengers still have to go from one platform to another through a decades old overbridge.

Ambala Cantt is an important rail junction of Northern India where thousands of passengers avail the rail services everyday.

Another mega project of setting up a bottling plant, which was also announced in the budget, is yet to take off.

Strangely even after two years the site for the project has not been finalised.

Another important project announced by Mamata Banerjee was laying of railway track from Naraingarh to Chandigarh.

Sources said Union Minister and MP from Ambala Kumari Selja had again taken up the matter with the Railway Minister for allocating funds for the project.
