Back in the early 1960s, when the developed world was first learning to jet across the world in style, there was one airline that dominated the skies. Pan Am every Saturday and Sunday at 10 p.m. on Star World is about the world’s first iconic airline, which made air travel the height of luxury. The planes were sleek and glamorous, the pilots were rock stars, and the stewardesses were the most desirable women in the world. They were trained to handle everything from in-air emergencies to unwanted advances — all without rumpling their pristine uniforms. These pre-feminist women formed a powerful sisterhood, as they enjoyed the rare opportunity to travel outside the country — something most women then could only aspire to. In their individual quests for adventure, the Pan Am crew face both, opportunity and peril, as they juggle their lives, hopes and dreams while flying around the world. The Kumars are back The Kumars are back in India, thanks to Comedy Central. The sitcom every Friday at 9 p.m. revolves around a well-to-do normal Indian family, at least on the surface. Members of The Kumars At No 42 include Sanjeev, his parents, and his granny played by Meera Syal. Sanjeev would be only too happy to break free from the family but for the fact that his parents have built him a TV studio in the backyard from where he hosts a chat show. But since the guests have to pass through the house to reach the studio, they are also subjected to unrelated questions by Sanjeev’s curious parents and his man-lusting granny. The hilarious encounters with celebrities like Jerry Hall, Ismail Merchant, Helena Bonham Carter and others have, for years, made this show a chartbuster. — NF
